I think one of the reasons the movie was a huge success besides the "Made for 3D" thing (and James Cameron's name) is the large amount of worldbuilding and effort put into creating the setting and creatures, which are then portrayed with really good effects and CGI that still hold up, frankly IMO this interesting setting/worldbuilding was really held back by that simplistic cliché plot, which is why I'm interested in seeing what kind of plot they will use in the sequels and how much they will expand the setting.
The CGI not only holds up, it looks better than 90% of modern films. Also, besides the cliche plot, Cameron did an awesome job on the directing. All the action scenes feel amazing and way more realistic and 'heavier' that the ones in modern blockbusters like the MCU films (and i like MCU films but their action sucks)
Tbh I don't have much of an issue with the simple plot since it did well with showing and exploring the world. For as much as people shit on the story they also don't acknowledge how often the imperialism plot line has been done, but since it's the highest grossing movie people just point it out most. Which is a shame considering the amount of actual care that went into it
The reason it took 13+ years now to get Avatars 2-5 out is not because they haven't been in production already, but because each one has so much CGI it takes 10 years to finish rendering
square soft in the 90s was pushing out cutscenes that make me wonder why movies like avatar take so much longer to make when they have way superior tech and aren't limited by vram
I read somewhere that James Cameron was actually waiting for cameras technology to get a bit more advanced for what he is/was trying to do? I could be wayyy off and my sources are lost to the winds but I vaguely remember reading that somewhere on the internet. If it was a google homepage news article, I apologize to waste ya time 😂👌
@@peeko_luxx2873 you're right, that was a thing they mentioned in a Q&A session fairly recently. Something about 3D camera technology needing to improve. They were the first to film an entire movie in stereoscopic 3D (in 2010) with the original film, and they had to basically invent the technology to do so in the process. But 3D cameras have now come a long way in the last decade since Apparently another holdup was a year and a half spent creating a mocap rig that also worked underwater
As someone who played the Multiplayer fairly extensively on 360. I'm gonna give a short perspective on it. It was horribly balanced (Weapon loadouts were determined by your level in the single player if I'm not mistaken, so if you finished the game you had a massive advantage over someone who for whatever reason had not), yet kinda fun due to the jank. You always go RDA. Certain parts of the maps would funnel the Na'vi players, letting the RDA just completely massacre them. I used the Nail Gun myself. I nailed a bunch of Na'vi back in the day. Didn't even need a hair erection. Good times. Fun fact, I assume as a collaboration with the Disney Parks, before Disney Infinity was cancelled there were plans to include Jake Sully and Neytiri as playable characters/figues. This was before Disney owned Fox too.
@@Vulpas The Na'vis version of foreplay is connecting their ponytails together. In the context of the film itself it seems more like that's how they bang. Hence Hair Boners. This was a legit 2009 meme. It's also how they tame animals.
As a younger kid, I played three of these games, thinking they were all the same game. My dumb kid brain still thought they were somehow the same game, even after playing the DS one 😅. Haven't thought about them in years, but thank you for finally telling me I played 3 different games, despite the titles all being exactly the same!
This is the comment I was searching for. I honestly had a ton of fun with the ps3 game. I played both endings and replayed them when they came out. Not some hidden gold mine here but underrated? I think so. Perhaps these stories are generic but I thought it was a nice way to display something in past history that occurred not so long ago. (Talking more from a complete historical standpoint rather than an animated Pocahontas movie)
Literally. I played Xbox 360 Avatar non stop. I got all armors for both sides as well weapons. Plus I’d always invade the bases of each side, as well go head first with a mech or get a beast to ride in.
I remember being 10 y/o, I could barely read the subtitles before they faded away in the movie theater, and still this movie left such a lasting impression on me. Naturally, the moment I found out about the PC game's existence I immediately got it. It sure as hell wasn't perfect, but as a kid it was perfect in my eyes and I played it at least like 6 times. It's funny how much you can enjoy things as a kid.
6:24 If I think of "Avatar" I think of bending the Elements and more recently about the fact that Kyoshi with her 7 feet flat frame and a penchant for excessive violence was probably fricken' terrifying. But I know that's not the Avatar(s) we are talking about here.
I remember ragequitting the banshee levels on the wii game. It was SO incredibly frustrating for a kid, the controls were borderline unusable. Ah, memories.
Avatar is interesting because for like two hours it's just an expensive Pocahontas reimagining, and then for the last forty minutes it's one of the greatest action movies ever.
I actually played the DS version back when I was around 14 and really liked it. Yeah it was super simplistic, but considering it was one of my first DS games (my actual first was another game I rarely hear talked about called Guilty Gear Dust Striker) I had a blast with it.
I thought I was crazy when I heard that the new game was releasing and had been developing for an extremely long time because I was sure I saw that game back in 2009. This definitely clears things up now.
My favorite example of different games with the exact same box art actually doesn't come from a licensed game. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands was released in time for the movie and the PS3/360 game was completely different from the Wii/PSP version. Not only with gameplay, but the stories are completely unrelated and neither of them tie into the film they were trying to promote. It's just weird to see this coming from an already famous game franchise. I guess that all the licensed jank that Ubisoft was doing at the time rubbed off on their mainline titles.
It's wasn't just Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell Double Agent was completely different on Xbox and Xbox 360, though you can play either versions through backward compatibility which is neat.
@@GenerationZ313 It was kind of cool that instead of just getting a downgraded version you get a completely unique one. A tradition that definitely died as demonstrated by the switch.

Ah, what a love/hate I have for those games on PC. Locked to 30FPS which makes them sluggish. Tried to unlock but it causes physics glitches. Can't seem to get the first one working properly now in Widescreen. Still, I really enjoyed them.
For games with the same box art but different gameplay, I remember the licensed harry potter games was like that (Prizoner of azkaban comes to mind especially, pc version was 3d adventure while gba was a 2d RPG), and I think also some of the early lego games were different between consoles, though not genre different.
Also handled Sonic Colors and Generations are the same base games than their console counterpart but with different levels and a 2.5D style, almost like a demake.
honestly always loved the single player aspect of the console/pc version, i think what made me really like it was the fact you can pick your faction and get gear respective to each with missions exclusive of each, really made it feel like effort was put into it.

If there's any one failing of the Avatar franchise (specifically the movie), it's the use of the name unobtanium. They could have called it ANYTHING else and it would have been better. They could have gone basic and called it E-119 (the 119th element) and it would have been fine. It feels like unobtanium was a placeholder name in the original script that just...stuck and was never changed. It's terrible.
Awesome! So happy to see another Video from Austin. I was just checking your channel a day or two ago, to see if I you had put out any new videos but they weren’t recommended to me or something! But thankfully they are still being shown to me when they come out!
It's the highest, but only because they keep including its multiple rereleases. Kinda bullshit when you put it back in theaters years later, and that's counted towards the total, when Avengers got there with its (as of now) single theater release.

There's a PS3/Xbox360 version (PS3 version's got exclusive Zurg content for the toybox mode), the Wii version's got less content for the toybox mode than 360/PS3, the PC version's the Wii port in HD without motion control, PS2/PSP are a different game entirely from the other, and the DS game is a completely different game utilizing the two screens the console has.
the legend of spyro and crash bandicoot mutant games all share the same box art but are night and day on almost every system, crash of titans on ds even has a completely different ending to the other versions
Part the reason that avatar is my fav movie even tho I rarely ever watch it, is because you can tell the people making it care deeply for it. Plus you don't have to watch an entire series to understand even a single shred of it
One of my most clearest movie memories is going to see avatar in 3D and seeing the woodsprite come so close to me it felt like I could touch it just sticks with me to this day
Okay, so this is the first video I watched from you, like the content but LOVE the music in the background, you've hit some childhood memories my guy. Thanks.
18:12 Literally me. I thought this game died in everyone’s memory and i was the only one who played it. Also, me and my brother unironically had the ps3 version, wii version and I had the iOS version. A lot of people discredit Avatar, from its copying of plot elements to an uninspired score compared to a very cool project that paid for musicians to hear from indigenous people across the world to give the Navi a unique sound that was ultimately scrapped. I also think they underestimate how cool it was to kids. Big battles on a planet that looks like our, but with otherworldly elements. And visually, especially for the time, it was the only movie of that high quality graphics to bring those kid’s dreams of a greener planet with a cool tree house to life. It was a monopoly for the time of giving kids another world to escape into, and i think thats what these games were trying to capitalise on.
What I think is a great example of vastly different games using the same exact boxart, is Petz Carz 2 (or Dogz 2 for the dog version). On PC and DS, it's about what you'd expect - a pet raising game, like Nintendogs and other games in the Petz franchise. On Wii and PS2, however, it's a story-driven adventure game, like an Okami for ages 3+. It's in fact a Japanese game by a company called Yuke's, originally titled Nyanko to Mahou no Boushi (Kitty and the Magic Hat), or Wanko (Doggy) for the dog version. Said magic hat is used by the main villain, an evil wolf named Ivlet (who your player character gets tricked into freeing from prison) to drive all the animals of the land berserk. Worst thing is, the cover seems downright scared of informing you of the difference - the JP version is the only one clear about the sort of game it is, showing Ivlet, with the EU one implying it by mentioning the presence of enemies on the back cover, while US tries its best to hide this completely.
I played the game in my xbox when i was a kid (probably 9/10 yo) and i love it to this day, the rda campaign as a kid felt intimidating, specially in the levels where you were alone, wandering through the jungles of an alien world where everthing tries to kill you, even the fucking plants, i felt captivated by the atmosphere of the game, playing it as an adult feels more about hey lets kill some alien bastards with my kick ass power armor, so i undesrtand your point of view, its not a great game by any means but its hella fun and enjoyable if u get into its atmosohere
I liked the one Avatar game on PC for one reason. It kept trying to guilt-trip you if you sided with the humans and there was some satisfaction in refusing to help the stupid blue people and their creepy nature-control tree each time. Unfortunately there was no “drop asteroid on the smarmy navi” option but hey still better than the movie. Then again Plan 9 from Outer Space is better than the movie.
Try Zippo lighter fluid on that sticker. I've removed stickers from cardboard game cases without damaging the artwork underneath. The stuff works great!
Meh I thought the film sucked. I mean I wanted the humans to win. Apparently there's 8 sequels planned and frankly I think George R.R Martin will get out his next book...no....finish the GOT series by the time the second film has a trailer.
To be fair it’s rather hard to write a sequel when one side has space superiority and the other side has sticks. Though if they were real creative.... invasion by Navi Europeans. I may just want to see a blue cat person in a Conquistador hat.
I was looking for Avatar Pandora Rising when I realized it has never been released in the states. Only in Canada, Philippines, etc. I tell you it's the best game Avatar created. Too bad it was shut down :'(
First time I've heard of any game based off this movie. I also had already forgotten they announced a new game not long ago with just a basic teaser that doens't tell anything. I guess I tend to forget about the blue people Avatar quite easily.
Flight of Passage is actually a really cool ride. I didn't think simulation rides could successfully suspend my disbelief, but it came close; the ride vehicle even simulates the Ikran's chest heaving under you and they pump in scents that match the scene (e.g., mud, saltwater, etc). Definitely steer clear if you get motion sickness really easily though.
I have to say, that I LOVED(and still do) the Avatar game for the ps3. I especially loved the online muiltiplayer. It was esenctially like call of duty in the aspect that it was 2 teams fighting each other, and I beleave there was muiltiple game modes. Such as in call of duty. I was good at the muiltplayer. :)
I actually have that game on a shelf somewhere and actually enjoyed it. The fact you got to pick whether to choose to join the navi or humanity... It was a fun game personally.
I have the one for the Wii and I genuinely got motion sickness the first hour into the game because I had no idea where to go. I don’t know why, but everything just… “blended in” with one another, and you couldn’t see anything other than Mr Blue Man.
Star Wars games in general. Battlefront 2 had a PS2 and PSP version and Lethal Alliance had PSP and DS version, also Forced Unleashed (Which is being remastered for Switch) was released on everything at the time.. yes N-Gage too. Thanks Austin!
EAs Harry Potter games are another cool example of sharing the same box art but being different games for different consoles. Definitely worth checking out, especially the Chamber of Secrets games, including the GameBoy color version which was the last North American GameBoy color release.
my little brother got the wii game for his birthday way back in 2010. he'd gotten stuck on the combat-flying level and i had to learn it from the ground up and get past it. no sweat off my back though, it became one of my favorite childhood games and I ended up playing it more than him xD I am hoping the strides in the industry as a whole can carry the new upcoming games somewhere great and unlock that special feeling of exploring pandora.

@@peeko_luxx2873 you're right, that was a thing they mentioned in a Q&A session fairly recently. Something about 3D camera technology needing to improve. But 3D cameras have now come a long way in the last decade since

Haven't thought about them in years, but thank you for finally telling me I played 3 different games, despite the titles all being exactly the same!
I've actually owned and completed 2 of these games. I've always felt the PS3 & 360 version were underrated... The DS game was aight.

I honestly had a ton of fun with the ps3 game. I played both endings and replayed them when they came out. Not some hidden gold mine here but underrated? I think so.
Perhaps these stories are generic but I thought it was a nice way to display something in past history that occurred not so long ago.

The 2009 Avatar Mobile game was my entire childhood. Multiple playthroughs and really fond memories.
I had that on my first generation iphone
The bit at the end just makes me want to hear about someone playing every version of Krusty's Funhouse.
Yeah I remember that being odd.
Of course now the only version you can currently play on current consoles is the 360 version.
It's wasn't just Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell Double Agent was completely different on Xbox and Xbox 360, though you can play either versions through backward compatibility which is neat.
