And now, by 2023, we are calling a 2009 game based on the film Avatar “pretty good”. It’s just funny how that works.
The Na'vi combat looks like it would benefit from an Arkham or Spiderman-style melee system... better at locking on and chaining attacks while slowing time to dodge vastly superior firepower, then zipping out to stealth into the trees to strike again. I'm glad I'm not the only one that had a great time with this game. So much fun playing as the RDA. Reminds me of the Deathworld books. Great looking game too! Too bad the upcoming Avatar game limits you to playing as a Navi.
YES!! I've loved this game for so long and I've always heard more people say it sucked than hearing people give it any praise whatsoever. Never understood the hate. Loved this game more than the movie.
The multiplayer was great, but I don't think the devs intended that. When I played, the servers were empty, you'd get a 2 v 2 at best. But the low player count turned the game into a Predator-like team deathmatch, where the phase run and invisibility skills were the best skills to use. Combined with the airstrike/bird swarm thing, it was a team deathmatch ruled by gorilla tactics. The Navi bow was so hard to use, but super powerful. Sadly the RDA pistol and rifle were the most OP weapons in any multiplayer, and were basically Insta kills at short or long range respectively. While it might have been a tacked on mode, it was pretty fun and a gem of a mode that I won't forget from 2009.
I’ll always remember i asked my grandma to get me GTA 4 for my birthday when i was too young to buy it myself and she got me avatar instead, i was pissed but it was actually pretty fun!

I loved the 3rd person mech driving xbox game. What's really neat is that Cameron only added the mechs in the film after he saw them created in the videogame first.
Yes! Love that this game is getting more recognition. I got it near when it came out because it hit the bargain bin pretty quick and special edition came with a figure. By the standards of most movie games, it's a surprisingly competent lite open world action RPG. My favorite aspect is that the game has a Metroid Prime-style scanner in which you scan objects, enemies and NPCs to unlock lore entries in the encyclopedia, and naturally between the two very different campaigns you get different opportunities to scan certain things. I'm not sure if there was anything exclusive to each campaign, but it was still fun to try to get all the encyclopedia entries and see the neat little worldbuilding lore they wrote into the game.

For me the biggest sell of the game was being able to play as the RDA. And as someone who replayed the campaign tones of times, the RDA from a gameplay sense was easily the best. If I can’t play as the RDA in Ubisoft’s new avatar game I don’t want it
The game plays like a 2000s MMO, but its certainly got the scale and immersion of one too. Probanly one of the better tie in games, if I wouldnt exactly call it good on its own.
Y'know just because I been playing them and deciding on actually playing through them all I hope we can see a look back/retrospective of The Borderlands games
Remember playing this game a long time ago... completed it despite having a budget pc and fps being near if not single digits for the whole playthrough.
glad you enjoyed the game, for me this was one of the first games i remember playing back on my old ps3, used to love it as a kid, glad to see its not one of those cases where being a child made the experience better than it actually was, really wanna play it again someday
Woo! I frickin loved this game when I was a kid and have been talking about how underrated it is for years, so glad to see someone else talk about it lol
The game is actually pretty easy to run on modern PC despite its age, in fact i didn't have a single compatibility issue, it support various resolution, high framerate, smooth mouse & keyboard controls (tho i needed to edit 1 line in a config to disable mouse accel but it took me 5 seconds honestly) and i think the game hold up pretty well on PC, specially for a 2009 title.. let alone compared to those horrible PS3/X360 versions, night and day 👍🏼
I've wanted to retry this game for ages now. Last time I played it it was the demo on PC and it was completely broken. I don't know if it was because of my PC, which it portably was, or the demo, but it was a mess.

I liked this game ever since I first played it back in the day. I know you weren't too hot on messing with the PC version to get it running, but even to this day, it's as easy as installing and starting it. Plus, you'll get insanely high framerates at all times too, and with maxed out graphics. If you can find it (read: download), and it seems to be a game you might enjoy, it plays best on PC nowadays by far, and with full controller or mouse and keyboard support. It's not an amazing game, but dang it it's fun sometimes, and blowing stuff up and running around exploring the world is just enjoyable. Hopefully this next Avatar game they're making is even better.

I remember really enjoying playing this game on the xbox back in the day when I was released. A lot of my friends gave me a hard time because it was a movie tie in game, which there were many that I enjoyed and some that I did not. This was one of the few that actually stood out to me. I still haven't my collection and like to pop it out and play it from time to time period my 8 and 10 year old have recently enjoyed playing it as the new movie has released and they have been getting into that world. I thought it was cool that they used the far cry engine as that allowed them to create the nice jungle look that the movie had and thought it was cool that you could play as the Na'vi or humans. That said I'm glad the game is starting to get noticed again for the good things that it had. Seems like I've been seeing a lot of older games from the 7th generation that are starting to get a second look and more praise than what they recieved upon release.
White man feeling sorry for natives being conquered. Where have I heard that before? Oh right, Last Samurai, Dancing with the Wolves and Pocahontas. Might as well have called the movie 'Dancing with the Last Overgrown Smurfs.' The biggest problem with the premise is that it doesn't translate that well into a science fiction setting. A literal space shuttle flying low enough that it could be targeted by beasts was just dumb, and they could have just ''nuked the entire site from orbit.'' Why didn't the very creator of Alien where the aforementioned quote is from have filled such an obvious plothole? That's what always bugged me about this whole franchise.
When your imaginary "better plot" means the movie would never be made or would be incredibly boring compared to what we got. I didn't like Avatar, but JC's 2 hour film is much better than your 2 minute version.
-Doesn't like Avatar -Admits that the premise doesn't make sense -Proceeds to criticize me even though you agree with my basic points. Perhaps follow a course in logic. 2+2 isn't 5, it's 4. Sure Avatar was a visual spectacle but really nothing more than that. Besides what hollyweird movie isn't these days? Cameron is known for Alien, Titanic, Terminator 1+2 and then he comes up with this contradictory hogwash? He could have made a visual spectacle that made more sense story-wise.
@@sandercohen9712 Yeah Aliens didn't make sense either. They already knew about this organism so they send some truckers to collect it, then some colonists after the truckers get murdered. Finally they call the marines and don't tell them anything, despite the fact there would be no "space marines," those guys would have been corporate mercenaries. And let's send Ripley back there because ... um ... well she got attacked by one and isn't a scientist and the best option is to nuke them from space, right? It's the only way to be sure. But a realistic rendering was shelved because ten seconds of launching nukes at a planet would have made less money. And you'd like it less. You didn't like the show [Avatar] for subjective reasons. Many did like the show, for subjective reasons. You're no movie scientist, and James Cameron didn't create "Alien," or the Alien from the movie "Alien." He was the "Aliens" guy. The quote is from "Aliens." The sequel to "Alien," created by Ridley Scott, Dan O 'Bannon and H. R. Giger, and some others I'm omitting for brevity.
@@sandercohen9712 And it's a stretch for me to say those guys created "Alien." Scott was a late addition, and if it wasn't for the team that assembled to make Jodorowsky's "Dune," there would be no "Alien" or "Aliens," and I'm pretty sure you wouldn't have liked that film either.
@@nimrodery I have never heard about a 'movie scientist.' Neither have I heard about objective opinions about movies either. Opinions are by nature subjective. Admittedly I haven't seen Alien since a long time so my memory is clouded on that. You may very well be correct in your description of its plot holes. But Avatar is literally a retelling of the movies that I mentioned, yet in a setting in which that premise doesn't do very well in. Cameron could have simply stated that unobtanium (most unoriginal name ever) is highly reactive to explosions and as such a (nuclear) bombardment would not have been an option. That's maybe four lines of dialogue or perhaps 1-2 minutes extra screen time to fill in that obvious plot hole but for whatever reason he didn't. Alternatively he could have opted for a 'bad ending' like in the Last Samurai where the Samurais were mowed down using technology of a foreign civilization (gatling cannons constructed by white/western people). So you'd have a movie about humans trying to negotiate with the Na'avi and learning their customs, the humans then try to forcefully remove the Na'avi using troops, but not wanting to resort to genocide at that stage, but failing that, opted to bombard the site from space instead. Aside from the premise not making much sense considering the technological gap, it also doesn't lend itself well to a trilogy. In any event, my opinions stand.
I remember this. Playing as a Na'vi felt like playing a Predator. Hiding in trees and cloaking. Then calling in a thanator to mess up an amp suit then going ham with the dual blades while blicking everywhere. While RDA is while just a SIG SPEC you become a one man army with lmgs and flamethrowers calling in airstrikes and dropping repulsors to send wildlife flying back. Damn it was fun. Then mucking about in the Planes of Goliath. The warzone was amazing to fight in
I used to have this game on PC. I had such a blast playing as both factions and using their different abilities and weapons. And the Environments are actually really beautiful

>"Avatar" and "underrated" in the same sentence
Gman's spiciest take yet 🙃
Game bro
I'm glad I'm not the only one that had a great time with this game. So much fun playing as the RDA. Reminds me of the Deathworld books. Great looking game too! Too bad the upcoming Avatar game limits you to playing as a Navi.
Dang! The shade at Sam!
The Earthling campaign gives me serious Lost Planet/ Earth Defense Force vibes.
6:09 🤣
That Houston reporter's a freakin legend!
Finally someone else who played this hidden gem, it's such a good game and didn't deserve the crap it got
It's so funny that you played the COD sound effects while I was playing MW3 Spec Ops
I’ll always remember i asked my grandma to get me GTA 4 for my birthday when i was too young to buy it myself and she got me avatar instead, i was pissed but it was actually pretty fun!
Humans are the good guys.
0:05 “Sargent Woods, you look like Hammered shit”
I like the part where John Avatar shows up and is like "It's Avatarin' time!"
And then he proceeded to Avatar all over the place.
I never realized how old the "BOSCHITT!" voice was until now.. I mean I heard it back in 08, but I never considered it outside of being "DASBOSCHITT" INTRO.
7:45 LMAO. That was the Aussiest accent that I’ve ever seen in an African looking man.
yeah it's almost like races aren't limited to particular continents
@@Feasco No it’s “almost” like they just mismatched the stereotypical white Australian voice actor with the African character model because they didn’t take close enough note of it.
I remember playing the game when it came out and enjoying it. I didn't become aware of its negative reception until later and I never really fully understood it. I mean, yeah, it's not like the greatest game ever or anything, but I thought it was fun enough.
You really just unlocked a recessed memory i pushed deep down... Like, i completely forgot this game existed but i remember loving it
This game is better then the Ubisoft crap pile of 2023 version
I like how generous they are with the rewards. You level up very frequently, and when you do you’re rewarded with tones of guns, skills and awesome looking outfits all at the same time. It’s very generous and keeps you playing.
Just wanna say: Your reviews are really good and entertaining. Even though I probably won't play 90% of the games you present.
Agreed
I have this game, been playing it for years. i really love having a selection of characters to play. It's still really good even now. I have shown many of my friends this game. (Xbox ) I'd like to see a re mastered version with enchanted graphics.
1:40 Ah, you're calling in an airstrike on the poor bastard already?
Never thought but Cameron or someone said there blue because pandora is mostly lit by its moons so the planet is usually a dark blue/green i can see why they didn't do that in the game probably would have made it more tedious then it needs to be
I loved the 3rd person mech driving xbox game. What's really neat is that Cameron only added the mechs in the film after he saw them created in the videogame first.
I was just thinking about making a video on this game the other day, one of my favourite games from the 2007-2012 era of games.
The nostalgia around this game is crazy to me, really want to replay it.
Hearing the Tourettes Guy laugh clip was such a joy.
Missed opportunity to mention The Abyss, a great James Cameron movie
THIS VIDEO! this is the reason why most post on r/piracy exploded. I asked for a keygen a few months ago because, yeah, i like this game a lot, a true guilty pleasure. I made the post, got a reply, then zero activity, now its got like 600 comment all begging for keys. I figured some youtuber made a video or something.
I'm guilty how fun I found it sending those Na'vi flying with the shotty.

Humanity for the Stars, mulch for the blueskins!
Sam Worthington kills it as Alex Mason in Black Ops. He’s not totally talentless
His accent slips a bit but apart from that I agree.
Paul Eding also voiced Grandpa Max from The Ben 10 Franchise.

I was able to pick this one up on eBay for 8 dollars despite the ridiculous price increase most likely due to release of the second movie.
Love the fact the last human armor literally turns you into a Gears soldier
Oh Gman, you are full of surprises! 😁
For me the biggest sell of the game was being able to play as the RDA. And as someone who replayed the campaign tones of times, the RDA from a gameplay sense was easily the best. If I can’t play as the RDA in Ubisoft’s new avatar game I don’t want it
I was kinda addicted to this game when it came out, loved the multiplayer
9:36 she looks more like she’s disappointment then stunned.
The game plays like a 2000s MMO, but its certainly got the scale and immersion of one too. Probanly one of the better tie in games, if I wouldnt exactly call it good on its own.
I genuinely love this channel, I watch almost every video even if I’ve never played the game because you make it entertaining as fuck.
Y'know just because I been playing them and deciding on actually playing through them all I hope we can see a look back/retrospective of The Borderlands games
Remember playing this game a long time ago... completed it despite having a budget pc and fps being near if not single digits for the whole playthrough.
Nice to see Gman is a man of TIGHT(s) culture!
glad you enjoyed the game, for me this was one of the first games i remember playing back on my old ps3, used to love it as a kid, glad to see its not one of those cases where being a child made the experience better than it actually was, really wanna play it again someday
Woo! I frickin loved this game when I was a kid and have been talking about how underrated it is for years, so glad to see someone else talk about it lol
Lost Planet is a nice game to star drawing comparisons, this one does fill more expensive than the other one despite the lack of graphic fidelity.
1:41 it's not a gmanlives video without that classic fart over an explosion... keep doing the lords work brother 😌
Play for the alien furries: 🤢🤮💨
Play for humanity: 💲💪🗿⚒️🏆
Allen from Generation Films/Tech was right!
HOLY HECK I REMEMBER THIS GAME! I LOVED IT AS A KID
Man this has unlocked some very old memories of playing this game lmao

-Doesn't like Avatar
-Admits that the premise doesn't make sense
-Proceeds to criticize me even though you agree with my basic points.
The warzone was amazing to fight in
I remember a featurette I saw online where the game developers sent a reference request and James Cameron just gave them access to all the assets
The world of avatar is so interesting it's really cool. We have games that you can explore it on the world with
Loved this game as a kid, always went RDA lol
I used to have this game on PC. I had such a blast playing as both factions and using their different abilities and weapons.
And the Environments are actually really beautiful
Wow my gf and I are gamers and she absolutely loves Avatar and just told me last night they made a game and this pops up in my algorithm.

As for the RDA/ na’vi mini game, I found the cheesy way to conquer the planet just wait till you completed the main game and did all side activities in each map before spam buying noting but grunt infantry. Split the infantry into a few armies and just bulldoze your opponent.
A friend of mine was really into the movie, and he picked this up in the discount bin. And you know what? He loved it. He tried to get me to play it. But I had already read the reviews and decided it wasn't worth my time.
I suppose you can't judge a book by the book's judge.
11:45 that looks like the equivalent of breaking the 180 rule for hitboxes.
Finally someone says it hahaha
Ngl i loved being at Pandora back then.
Even got the 1k Gamerscore :O
As a man who enjoyed the avatar games as a kid, I’m glad you made this video
Game performance dropping was probably done to avoid game crashing due to memory limitations.
While in the process of collecting the xbox 360 library,I made my way to movie based games and Avatar came along. It sincerely impressed me,good to see it get some love!
definitely agree man... there's also that stigma of movie Titan games just like games tied in the movies that people are wary of but occasionally we get these few gems that pop up and it's glorious...👍
I only completed the Navi campaign back in the day, but I found the game to be pretty competent even if it didn't make a big impact on me. It was good enough to keep me playing till the end.
@Hope died last LMAO. Don't blame me, I played it shortly after watching the movie :D
@Hope died last reject humanity, embrace blue monke
Yeah this game was pretty intriguing in terms of licensed games. The new game seems pretty interesting as well.
Thought I was one of the few people who think this game is a hidden gem, I remember me and my older sibling being SO much time replaying this game I genuinely think we liked it more then the movie
We need a open world avatar game, the world is literally made for it
There‘s one coming
@@downdiablo the one that's announced for like 10 years?
Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is an upcoming game by Ubisoft, it’s apparently an open world FPS.
