Mike....I love these types of videos....... they're the types of videos that are not just inspiring, but also in a category I consider a 'true tutorial'. I love process videos too but to really learn, I think real time project and tutorials such as this "experiment are the best. You're an awesome gifted teacher Mike....Thank you so much!!!!!1111
Hi there, lovely experiment thank you. I know it's not what your video was about but I got to say what fantastic mirrors you have there, I just love it.
Thank you for posting this video. I was about to make an entire frame with mica and plaster but now I will just make it with the plaster and paint it afterwards with the powder and water!
Being a natural-born klutz, I often knock things over. I have found that a straight sided container is somewhat more stable and that weighting the container with the glass marbles they sell for flower arrangements - or even gravel from the driveway - helps a lot. That was a fun and educational project - thanks for sharing.
When you started using your heat tool to dry the paint, I kept thinking No,no,no!!! You'll blow away the Luscious powder!!!! Aughhhhh! So glad it stayed put, that stuff looks pricey! And also when I used to do castings I was taught to fill the mold halfway, give it a tap, then fill to full... Just sayin. Thanks Mike for letting us play alongside. Best, Donna
I know this is an old video BUT I just figured out I'm highly allergic to resin. I bought some plaster of Paris today to try to play with and I found this video as a how to.... OMG, it made me SO hopeful that I can still create and play! Thank you 💚
Just popping back to re watch this video because I haven't used Plaster of Paris since the late 1970's when we used to fill old mousse pots that had different designs in the bottom. We were only kids so my uncle made them & we painted them. Now I'm playing with air drying clay & have some plaster & wanted to check back in to see what you discovered. Was fun to watch 😊❤👻
What fun, Mike! I loved the gold cherub and the bronze skull, what a shame the pigment isn't permanent but metallic acrylic paint would do the job wouldn't it. I don't have many moulds as yet but I think I need to either stock up or maybe try that reusable mould making silicone (the one you melt in the microwave) and have some fun. Thanks for sharing your experiment with us...what a fun way to while away a few hours on a Sunday :). Bejay xx
Hi. If you sprinkle the plaster powder to the water instead of making a paste you’ll get a lot less bubbles, lumps and cracks. Hope this helps for next time. I’ve only recently come across your stuff and I’m making my way through it all.
Oh I wish these Lucious powders were available in Holland, same with the Indigo Blu paints. Would love to try it but from Indigo Blu we just have some stamps and stencils available here as far as I know. These turned out great!
I've just spoken to IndigoBlu and they do ship to Holland and they use a sliding scale for postage..which I think is quite reasonable...it may be worth your while having a look!
Thanks for the respons Mike. And you are completely right, the shipping costs to Holland are indeed very reasonable. Just the other day I placed an order and found out that shipping costs were about 7 Britisch Pounds. That's not much at all! For some reason I thought shipping costs would be very expensive, but I'm very happy to learn that it's actually not. Thanks!
We have the same cherub moulds, in fact we'll be bringing some of the casts out with us to shows to add to our product range! Have you tried using a method similar to cold casting and dusting the mould with the powders first? And have you tried vibrating the moulds to help the air bubbles free up? A tin tray and eccentric weight on an electric motor should do it.
I didn't try dusting, that's a good idea to try! If you're bringing your casts, I may just buy those rather than make my own..lol Ian says he's not letting me near anything that vibrates so I'll just have to use a hot air gun to draw out the bubbles! XO
So Cool... LOVE The Skull & of Coarse The Angels :) Years ago I was a total Freak in doing Plaster Elements( I used them in my Folk Art, I even made my own Grapevine wreaths)...But I used a Product by Plaid called "Faster Plaster"...it has a plastic element in it and it's much sturdier & durable then Plaster Paris. 20 plus years ago there wasn't silicon molds....mine where hard Plastic ( I Have a TON of Molds ) some from Plaid, Most are Candy Molds. Candy Molds are a Great source when you are counting Pennies. Have to check with Plaid to see if they still sell the "Faster Plaster". TYFS Mike, Now you got me wanting to Crack-open my stash. Hubby will just say" OMG, Not Again..." But this Time I can say Mike made me do it...LOL...Love you a Big Much XOXOXOXO Awesome Demo !!!
What will you use those lovelies for? Am thinking in terms of gluing 2 of them together back to back with cord inside perhaps for holidays from chandeliers i.e. valentines , etc. could they be sealed to save beautiful coloring ? Enjoyed your vid. Thnx👍
I have several silicone molds thst i have been using both sculpey clay and air dried paper clay, i have a box of plaster of Paris around here im going to have to try out... love the cherbs and the skull!!! TFS... i was just wondering 2 things...is there something you can treat the mould with so it slips out and i wonder if the none expanding foam used as caulking would work....hmmmm... im iff to experiment...love your idess!!!♡♡♡♡♡♡
Please share your finding with the expanding caulk!! You could use a release spray on the mould but to be honest the silicone ones don't really need it! XO
Love the results you got with the powders, Mike; but like "cat yeah" I am wondering if you can't use some kind of varnish or spray sealant of some kind? Have you tried that yet? Would it still affect the finish like wet hands would have? I've been wanting to try to make my own molds, and am definitely inspired by how your skull and cherub have come out!!! I may just have to order those powders! TFS! ~tina
BTW, couldn't you spray your Luscious pigment powder painted pieces (whew! that's a lot of puh) with an acrylic lacquer???? (oooo I feel another experimental video coming!!!!) hahaha, um - hugs.
As Jolanda says it's a pretty in holland indigo blue isn't available....... any way. I was wondering why you mixed the plaster with a pigment as you where painting the moldes afterwards ?
I painted after the mixture didn't work as expected..painting them wasn't the idea behind the experiment. Mixing the luscious powders to see the result was my original intention. XO
Oh Mike, I love this! Where can I get those moulds?? I have been trying to find some for years, I can’t find them in Australia, if you or anyone knows, please let me know! I’m happy to buy them online if anyone knows who I can get them from. Thanks in advance. And thank you Mike for your fabulous tutorials and videos, I always look forward to them XX :)🙂
Mike......since I AM one of your "angels" would you Puh-leeeez provide a web address to order those angel moulds...they are precious! And so was your video! Big hug, cat
Aww, boo! I guess those lil cherubs aren't offered on the US Amazon. They ARE cuties tho! I am really tempted to try plaster as the newer offerings are so much stronger than the older stuff (basically chalk). Thanks for the video, Mike!

Thank you for sharing Mike. I enjoyed watching the process.
There you go. I'm an Angel for another month. I am so glad you make it so easy.
Thank you XO
Love that stuff and very luscious indeed! Enjoyed!
I love watching experiments. Thanks for the vid
I love that I can watch other people do the experiment so I don’t have to and decide if I like how the color came out
I love these mike!! I need to do some mould shopping!! Love the flower detail and skull is awesome!

Love the playtime. I've got a few mounds but have never used plaster of Paris......might be time to try. Thanks for sharing.
The flowers are so lovely! Thank you for sharing, Mike. I really enjoy all your videos very much!

Cant wait to see what you do with the plaster of paris bits and bobs.tfsLove your vlogs and videos

They are so cute, they'd make interesting Christmas tree decorations!
These are so cool , love it

Also for the pigment powder coming away you could always use an acrylic clear spray lacquer to seal it
Interesting to experiment, thanks for being honest with the results
Ooo I do love a messy play date. The skull is awesome . And the cherub well ... Modelled after yourself I'm sure . ⚗✂️🖌🍹🍺
Oh yes. Love this. I used to play with plaster of paris as a child with a soft floppy mould. Not nearly as high tech as it is now.
You did a great job. Thank you for doing the testing for us...they all look lovely!

Unless you let Ian do the vibrating, of course I'm not calling him an eccentric weight, more of an eccentric pleasantly plump. ;-)
Very nice.

LOl..go on, break open that stash and get messy and of course you can use me as an excuse! LYBM XO
Great experiment you done we don't have the luscious pigment powders so i have to look for it. Thanks agian Mike :-)
Could you use liquid pigment in the plaster also could you paint the mold with dry mica I’ve done it with resin but never tried it in plaster 🤔
What will you use those lovelies for? Am thinking in terms of gluing 2 of them together back to back with cord inside perhaps for holidays from chandeliers i.e. valentines , etc. could they be sealed to save beautiful coloring ? Enjoyed your vid. Thnx👍
A fixative spray or spray varnish would do the trick.
Is this your first use of plaster of Paris for the molds? Enjoyed your experimenting.
Have used it before, but never tried to mix anything with the plaster..was fun experiment.
I have several silicone molds thst i have been using both sculpey clay and air dried paper clay, i have a box of plaster of Paris around here im going to have to try out... love the cherbs and the skull!!! I haven't because it's just as easy to use metallic acrylic paints, one step instead of two! XO
I saw a lady put water in the mold and drop in dry powder till it wouldn’t take any more. 🤷♀️ I’ve also seen people add school glue. ❤
BTW, couldn't you spray your Luscious pigment powder painted pieces (whew! that's a lot of puh) with an acrylic lacquer???? (oooo I feel another experimental video coming!!!!) hahaha, um - hugs.
I could, but I'd rather just use metallic acrylic paints as it's only one step instead of two! XO
What a fun play time, love the results, where did you get the molds? I have not seen anything like them before Thank you Mike
EBay mostly!
Do you use anything to cover once painted? Like a varnish or anything? 😊 love the video!
Sometimes - depends what I'm going to do with it afterwards
As Jolanda says it's a pretty in holland indigo blue isn't available....... any way. I was wondering why you mixed the plaster with a pigment as you where painting the moldes afterwards ?

MEEE TOOOO! I wan those cherubs!
I got mine from Ebay. I searched cherub silicone mould! XO
This is some banging ASMR.
Hi, where do you get the molds?
Mike......since I AM one of your "angels" would you Puh-leeeez provide a web address to order those angel moulds...they are precious! And so was your video! Big hug, cat

What is the weight like. Have not done anything with plaster of paris. Can they be added to art journal pages
How long do those plaster items last, did they break? I want to make an angel for a past loved one
I still have them years later!
@@MikeDeakinArt cool thanks 😊
Could you seal the pigment powders on top with a thin layer of resin brushed on?
Yes any spray fixative or even hairspray should do it!
Would you seal with a varnish
Maybe a spray varnish, but not with a brush.
You need to tap your moulds some more
