Wow. Perhaps a good way to cut down on the amount of resin we use? Resin is terribly expensive, so it'd be nice to see if this works. I wonder if you can color it with mica powders. 🤔🤔 You've got my brain going now! Thanks Steve!
I absolutely love your experiments gone right or wrong! I also absolutely LOVE your torn up jumper! That is the clearest indication that you are an artist, rather like when you never, as a dancer, show up to an audition with a new pair of shoes. They should be worn and tattered or no one is going to believe you have put in the work you have. Artists are the same. An apron should be trashed, or a shirt, or whatever, all covered in paint, glue, resin, glitter and whatever else. Good on you!
Absolutely! It’s kind of funny to comment on his clothing when what he is doing is so absolutely cool, but that striped torn shirt is the bomb! I want one!
Please give more information on how you mixed the resin with the plaster of Paris.... How much of each was used? How long to cure? Is there anything difference in the hardness? Or strength? Colors? Love the look of the bust.
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts Thank you for taking the time and effort to answer each and every one of my questions!!! I'm always interested in working with new things. I've learned SO MUCH from you. Thanks for sharing and teaching.
I am glad you asked this because I watched the video 4 times to see if missed the amounts lol. I was doing some other things at the time and kept thinking I just missed it.
I love this idea, and yah, it turned out perfectly! It occurs to me that this is also a great way to save resin. The plaster adds enough bulk to the resin, I think, so you use less of it. (Less resin, I mean) Any thing that saves using more resin is awesome to me!!
Thank you for this! I mix sand into my resin for certain projects to give a little weight to some pieces and was planning to try something like your experiment! Glad to see it worked!
If you could you add small bits of black or grey pigment and draw a toothpick or thick needle through that I think it would look like a little marble sculpture.
I'm curious! Have you tried experimenting and adding the other way around. Like doing the usual plaster of Paris mix with water, and then adding a bit of resin? I'm curious what It looks like
Water and resin doesn’t mix well….or rather doesn’t set well together. However I dont see why you couldn’t use an alternative that evaporates over time. ISO alcohol 70% maybe? I like the idea of mixing plaster and resin. Someone need to do some experimenting! Not it!
I spend most of my working day working with fibre glass and when we are low on Talc we have used Plaster to thicken the resin as a gel coat to paint into the Mould pre glassing..seems to work fine but it does add more weight than Talc...
This is great! Love the look buuuttt...... It raises more questions for me. Can you put colors in? How long did it take to set up, resin curing time? Can you increase the depth of the pour ( more than 1/4 of an inch)? This could be another trial for you. So many questions, and I am still going to try it. Thank you Steve, I enjoy your vids so much and look forward to them each week.
Hi Steve, watched many of your videos, they are a great source of inspiration. I have often wondered about adding plaster of paris or in my case gypsum. Would really love to know how much you used.

I really get drawn to your videos because I think that a lot of people are like me and scared to experiment on our own. I love seeing how these things turn out. It would be even better to know how durable these things are because I know that when you displace resin with other things (by adding things to resin, this is what you're doing), it creates spaces between the resin and causes the bond to be weaker and the piece can break easier. A lot of people work with resin to sell things made with it and durability is important for that reason. I don't actually use a lot of resin myself, I make and sell molds. But any information about different techniques with resin I can find is helpful because I can share it with my customers who have questions.
@@SteveMcDonaldArtsandCrafts that's a sweet offer, but I think I'm a bit too camera shy for that. 😁 I truly love your stuff. You're doing a great job. I recommended your channel recently to someone who asked about resin tutorials in a facebook group.
