Hi, thanks for your kind comment and sorry to hear that you can't find your photos. Is your Google Photos signed into the correct Google account? I'm not sure this is the same problem, but Google once moved all my photos to a completely different account without me realising because I had opened a different google account on a different app. I'm sure you've tried this but it might be worth checking the Google photos Trash/Bin folder. Also if you go to takeout.google.com you can download all photos and videos that Google has stored on your account (if you go there logged into the correct account). Hope you manage to find your photos.

Thanks very much for the clear and concise description of what I need to do to reduce my Google storage... It took a couple of hours to compress the files as you indicated...my storage usage reduced from 95 to 48 percent... Next I will add the extra account for my photos and videos. Many thanks
IT WORKED! 3 GB down! not only that, but I also wrote to them asking why my storage is not updating and they additionally took 2 GB down. It apparently was not synching properly... ALLEGEDLY
Thanks for the kind comment - really pleased this might help. I've found the local cache takes time to catch up to the reality of the reduction. ie the reduction happens successfully but it takes time for that to be reported back to us. I've found logging in on another device or browser shows the more up to date figure. Thanks again.
Thanks so much! Finally some tech advice that works! I did find that in order to change the Google Photos backup account on Apple devices (phone & tablet), I had to uninstall the app and then reinstall under the new photos account. Thanks again! Recover storage only got me 4 GB back, but it was enough for me to get everything Google back working again so I could set up another account. It'd be nice to have an older Pixel that "can back up photos & videos in Storage saver quality at no charge" in Google Photos. That'd help a lot.
Brilliant, thank you. I'm not a back end computer whizz so will have to save this and follow it step by step. I'm one of those wally's who bought some storage 🙈😅
Thanks for the tips Google truly is annoying sometimes and I've done everything from deleting hundreds of pics/videos, to uninstalling the app 3 times. I think the compression will work now 👍🏻
Thanks for ur video. Helps understanding google. But how can I delete photos in the cloud without deleting them also on the phone? Do I have to disconnect the google account with the cloud firstly or how do I realize this?
If my phone have more than google photo storage can handle even after reducing the size, I want to backup the other half of the photos via another mail, can another account / mail be added to my gphotos account ? And how to backup only the second half automatically ? (Because first half already backup up on the first account that has been compressed)
Once I share the two accounts, can I delete all the photos from the original account because they will now be saved on the new account taking up no storage? hope im understanding this right, thanks neil!
guys i want to use the last tip about compressing all photos, but i fear that the quality change will be to drastic and that all the beautiful photos will be ruined. am i wrong?
That video is such a relief. I'm so lucky to find you on this app. One question though. It seems that my "Phone Photos Gallery" and "Google Photos" are somehow linked and when I delete something from Google Photos it gets deleted from the Phone gallery and vice versa. While I can't find a solution to that problem, I wonder: Will the quality compression of my Google Photos have effect on my phone gallery too? Thanks a lot!
Hi Neil, thanks for this video, it's exactly what I have been looking for. I have one question though. If I compress the size of the photo's in google photo's, does it not impact the original photo that is on my phone? Since, if I delete a photo from google photos, it also deletes the original from my phone... Hope you can help, thanks again :)
SO sorry to hear this and thanks for letting me know Mane. It's difficult to tell from here at what stage you're at in the process - that sounds really strange that it is offering backup but not sync. Forgive me, I can't imagine what is causing this. I thought that it might be because the account is still over its limit, but then it wouldn't be offering to backup. I'm so sorry I can't think of a fix at this stage. Is your account maybe a Google Workspace account rather than a personal account? Hope we can find a fix.
Hi Neil, you are the only one I trust. My question is how do i download my Google Photos and an external hard drive? if you have already done a video on this please let me know. Thank you in advance!
Hi TheBossMan - thanks for the question: I have done a video on downloading, using a tool Google provide called Google Takeout ua-cam.com/video/9lU-jfTKf5s/v-deo.html This method is great for downloading everything in one go BUT it does remove all the hidden metadata from each photo: so the ISO, shutter speed, camera used etc etc etc. If you don't use these then this is best. Takeout does provide those details, but as separate files. If this isn't suitable, then the other way is to select all of your photos into one album on Google photos, then download the album. The downside to this is that it might take a bit of work putting everything into one album. Or you could manually select all photos for downloads, which also takes a bit of time. Hope this helps - good luck with the backing up!
Hi Neil i must compliment you...have watched many "how to" vids but nòt as "clear" as yours thnx a bunch. May i pose some questions to you please? My photo galery is constantly full...can i delete them after they'd been saved on my google photos? And how do i know all my gallery photos have all been saved before i delete them?
Hi Marion Thanks for the kind comment and question. You can in theory delete the photos on your phone after they have been saved on your Google photos, but the danger is that your Google Photos can then become full and Google offer to charge money to look after them. The best way for me to save the photos is to transfer them to a memory stick, or hard drive for safety maybe using a laptop or computer. The best way to check if your Gallery photos have been saved to Google photos is to check the google photos site either on your phone or laptop or tablet browser. Go to: photos.google.com Click on the top right hand corner to make sure you are signed in to google photos. I hope this helps

So sorry to hear this -- Which phone is it? Do you think its just the display timing out and going to sleep? If it's the same phone as mine (a Samsung Galaxy) Are you able to go into Settings - Display - Screen timeout Or Settings - Lock Screen - Secure Lock settings to check the settings? Hope this helps!
Neil, I have done exactly what you, say in your video. I did the Sharing and it says, I'm all set! But yet I still get Warning notices, I'm running out of room as far as storage! HELP PLEASE.
Thanks for sharing this info. I wanted to ask about saving photos in original size on a hard drive. Can they be added/uploaded to a laptop that doesn't have g photos on it or can only use hardrive, plus I'm guessing these pics need to be uploaded to HDrive/Ltop before you shrink to storage saver size.........and can U up/ld pics to HD/LT and still have them on ur mobile (shrunk after uploading? I have two google accounts n thought I could use both to free up storage coz the photos taken using one G acc doesn't get added to the other which I kinda thought meant there were two G photos apps W 2 storage spaces, but I don't know how to transfer pics over, the few crappy phones Ive got don't have all my backed up pics in the g photos apps but chunks of months are missing in both phones but google has saved the same pics that are in my pHs gallery app as well. G Lens got removed on all phones, I can't use Gmail, other apps or share iNFO/send items to apps, email, drive etc so I'm too nervous I'll lose my photos again as somehow 45k backed up G photos since 2005 disappeared twice and I still don't have all my saved screenshots, videos, animations and many months kapoofed . Sorry that was a long winded headache .. but I thought it might be helpful to explain as my last suggestion from someone was to do a factory reset which freaked me out knowing I'd lose Iit all. Thanks for not visually rushing through the steps to take and saying clearly what to do.
Hi Tash Thanks for the kind question. Hope I'm understanding it correctly. The photos on your phone are original size. The shrinking is just something that happens within Google Photos in the cloud. So when you backup your phone to a harddrive or laptop (or, ideally, both), you're just copying the original size photo files to a folder on the hard drive. Also to complicate things slightly, there are different folders on the phone (if it's andoid) for the screenshots etc as well as the camera photos. If you do Partner sharing you can backup the photos to whatever account you share to, and use that as your photos account. You can also download all the photos/videos on Google Photos to your hard drive by using Takeout.Google.com I'm not sure I've understood your question properly but hope something here might help. thanks again and good luck with your google storage.
hi - I'd love to hear from you. I tried to convert my existing photos & video to storage saver but it doesn't work, so I want to delete all of it first from my other google account and let it re back up again. Do you have the video that can show me the way to delete all of it once and for all? Thanks
Hi thanks for the kind question. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to 'delete all' that I've found - beyond, either going into the 'largest items' and deleting from there, or going through photos and ticking the days to delete the whole day, day by day. The way I make it work now is to use a single account for 'photos' and I partner shared between the 2 accounts. This saves all my 'main' account photos to the 'photos' account, and not take up storage quota in the saved account. I turn on auto save and when I delete from the 'main' account to bring it under quota, they remain in the 'photos' account at original quality,. I have a video that explains it better, but I think it has saved in the other direction as well, so that the pictures that were in the 'photos' account are shared back to the original 'main' account, at original quality (even though they were on saver quality) and not take up quota space. ua-cam.com/video/5G_N4AnLMiM/v-deo.html Sorry I cant be of more help with the deleting, but hope something here might help
What will happen to the the quality of the videos and photos after reducing their sizes in stage 5 down to the storage saver size? Are they still clear to look at?
Thank you. I wonder why even after having my own phone's internal storage, my photos are counted in google storage which in turn blackmails me with several ways? Wow!
That's a great question Jocelyn. I would download all the original size photos first for safety, either directly from the phone, or by downloading them from Google using their takeout.google.com - OR "Export your data" in "Settings" in Google Photos on desktop. Google says once you compress them, you can't undo this process, but I've seen messages offering to convert them back to original size both on desktop google photos and in the app (along with an ad to pay for the Google One storage). So the short official answer is no, you can't. But I have totally seen Google offer to restore the pictures to Original size. But I wouldn't trust this and would keep a local backup somewhere else, if it were me. Hope this answer isn't too vague or helps, and good luck with your storage!
Great tutorial - but before watching this video, I had already clicked on Free Up Space option. Now those photos must have got deleted from my phone? Any way to undo it?
Hi thanks for the kind comment and so sorry to hear this. There are some things you can try - and obviously try them quickly Go into google photos, either on the app, or better (because it's easier to see) on a desktop browser. Go into the recycle bin/bin/trash folder Google photos keeps things there, if they were deleted there - for 30 days. Fingers crossed they are there. There's also an archive folder in Google photos - it's on the left hand side bar - the 'clean up' may have only put the folder and pictures in there. You can restore from Archive folder. Other options: Go to takeout.google.com while logged into your account - quickly - and this is where you can download everything Google has stored on the account. The pictures and folder may still be there I have a video walkthrough here: ua-cam.com/video/9lU-jfTKf5s/v-deo.html Hope something here helps and thanks again - good luck!
Thanks for this video. I have a question and thought maybe you might be able to help. I do have a Google photos account and have uploaded all of my photos from my phone, or I thought I did until I noticed that the amount of photos on my phone is almost double the size of the photos that Google photos is showing. Why is Google Photos not backing up ALL of my photos / videos? Appreciate any suggestions.
With the backup turn off to the google photo, can I still go to storage and reduce all the photos and videos to storage saver size? How small are the size of the photo and videos after reducing to storage saver size? Will I still be able to see them clearly?
Hi Neil, I am using a Samsung S22 Ultra (Android). A month ago I saved a ton of photos from google photos to my laptop drive and removed them from my google photos. Later the photos seem to have synced again from my phone to google photos so my google storage is full again. How can I remove photos from google photos to make more space but still sync my phone google photos for back up purposes? Thank you.
Hi Auntie3333 - Thanks for the kind question, this is so frustrating. I think what's happening is that the photos are still on your phone, so the phone might be synching the pictures to the Google Photos. Thankfully, you have them backed up to your laptop drive, so in theory if you delete them on your phone, they should not resync with google Photos. If it were me, I would open the samsung 'Gallery' app - this accesses the photos without using Google Photos. Select the photos you want to delete by long-pressing them and click delete. This is really cumbersome though. Another way - the way I use - is to plug the phone into your laptop - which sounds as if you might have done already to download the photos. Open up the photos folder on the phone and select and delete them. It will be easier to select many photos and videos at the same time to delete. Alternatively, if it helps... There is an option in the Google photos app which you can turn on or off where if you delete the photo from the phone, it also deletes it from Google Photos library. In your Google Photos app on your phone, Click on your avatar on the top right hand corner Scroll down to photos settings and click on it Scroll down to "SD card access" and click on it Follow the instructions You're so close to resolving this - good luck!

Ohhh... uninstalling the app is a great idea. Really glad something here might help.
Brilliant, thank you. I'm not a back end computer whizz so will have to save this and follow it step by step. I'm one of those wally's who bought some storage 🙈😅
All these tips definitely helped. Thanks King
Wow! Wow! Wow! all I can say is thank you. I would recommend your video to all my contacts.🎉🎉🎉

Thanks Neil for passing on this knowledge. Worked a treat again thanks very much
This was so very helpful. Had to do a bit of adjusting to fit the app update but everything was manageable.
Thank you!
This was super helpful. Thank you, Neil!
Thanks for the kind message @花-y8u
Thank you so much. Got my email back and saved me a monthly fee. You’re awesome!👍
A bulk of my storage says device backup. How do I decrease that? You are great!!
Thanks for the tips Google truly is annoying sometimes and I've done everything from deleting hundreds of pics/videos, to uninstalling the app 3 times. I think the compression will work now 👍🏻
Did the compression worked?
In the US on Apple 🍎 and I’m only seeing back up and I only have the option to turn backup on or off .🤦🏽♀️no option to upload storage either 😢
Thanks for ur video. Helps understanding google. But how can I delete photos in the cloud without deleting them also on the phone? Do I have to disconnect the google account with the cloud firstly or how do I realize this?
If my phone have more than google photo storage can handle even after reducing the size,
I want to backup the other half of the photos via another mail, can another account / mail be added to my gphotos account ?
And how to backup only the second half automatically ? (Because first half already backup up on the first account that has been compressed)
I just found your video and follow your steps to see what happens in next few hours. I will update you guys
You the goat man, you saved me today🤝🏻
last tip was the best
thank you so much sir
Hi Neil....I don't have an option that says review & delete?
Once I share the two accounts, can I delete all the photos from the original account because they will now be saved on the new account taking up no storage?
hope im understanding this right, thanks neil!
guys i want to use the last tip about compressing all photos, but i fear that the quality change will be to drastic and that all the beautiful photos will be ruined. am i wrong?
Hopefully on my way to freeing up some space! Thank you!
THANKS SO MUCH THIS HELPED ME A YEAR AGO AND IM BACK AGAIN TO USE YOUR GREAT VIDEO!!!
HELP! when i go to google photo settings it just says "backup" not "backup and sync" so I am unable to move forward as you advise
Excellent Neil
It's very helpful. Thank you very much
It's the 3rd times I'm watching this video and it helped me thank you so much teacher❤❤❤
thank you! exactly what i was looking for. it helped immensely
Hi Neil, you are the only one I trust. My question is how do i download my Google Photos and an external hard drive? if you have already done a video on this please let me know. Thank you in advance!
Hi TheBossMan - thanks for the question:
I have done a video on downloading, using a tool Google provide called Google Takeout
ua-cam.com/video/9lU-jfTKf5s/v-deo.html
This method is great for downloading everything in one go BUT it does remove all the hidden metadata from each photo: so the ISO, shutter speed, camera used etc etc etc.
@@neilmossey thank you Neil!
@@neilmossey is the date stamp considered Metadata? That all I care about.
Brilliant, who knew how to compress existing pictures..? Thank you
Hi Neil i must compliment you...have watched many "how to" vids but nòt as "clear" as yours thnx a bunch. May i pose some questions to you please?
My photo galery is constantly full...can i delete them after they'd been saved on my google photos? And how do i know all my gallery photos have all been saved before i delete them?
Hi Marion
Thanks for the kind comment and question.
Go to:
photos.google.com
Click on the top right hand corner to make sure you are signed in to google photos.
I hope this helps
This is pure gold! Tks a lot sir

Hi neil. Tried your solution. Thank you so much for this.
Will selecting the 'Recover storage' also compress my videos and photos in gallery? the originals
Brilliant info and videos ........thanks Neil...........if only i could hit the 👍 10,000 times!!
Hi Tash
Thanks for the kind question.
You can also download all the photos/videos on Google Photos to your hard drive by using Takeout.Google.com
I'm not sure I've understood your question properly but hope something here might help. thanks again and good luck with your google storage.
It seems that Google has changed the options for the first option you explained where you can change the backup to compressed file size.
Master Class sir! Liked and Subscribed.
Thank you so much for posting this video. Such a big help!
Thanks for the very kind comment Parafanormal Seekerz, I appreciate it!
Good luck with your Google Storage!
hi - I'd love to hear from you.
I have a video that explains it better, but I think it has saved in the other direction as well, so that the pictures that were in the 'photos' account are shared back to the original 'main' account, at original quality (even though they were on saver quality) and not take up quota space.
ua-cam.com/video/5G_N4AnLMiM/v-deo.html
Sorry I cant be of more help with the deleting, but hope something here might help
Thank you very much for your advice. But do you know why I can't compress although I have been waiting for the whole day?
Thank you so much! You're doing amazing job keep going 👍🏻
What will happen to the the quality of the videos and photos after reducing their sizes in stage 5 down to the storage saver size? Are they still clear to look at?
When I go to backup I don’t have the sync option like you do
This has really helped with my storage, thanks for your help 😊
EXCELLENT TUTORIAL!!!! THANK YOU
Happy, older techno-bimbo kiwi here - thank you Neil🌹
Thanks for the kind comment Chrissie, I appreciate it -- good luck with your storage!
Thank you. I wonder why even after having my own phone's internal storage, my photos are counted in google storage which in turn blackmails me with several ways? Wow!
Hi i have a question if i make the videos and the photos smaller and i dont like it can i Change it back to the Original size?
That's a great question Jocelyn.
I would download all the original size photos first for safety, either directly from the phone, or by downloading them from Google using their takeout.google.com
- OR "Export your data" in "Settings" in Google Photos on desktop.
Thank you
Very helpful this video the back your storage....much appreciated....well done..
Thank You Neil.....I could finally sort my moms phone... 😇
If you chnge the file size of the photo does its quality chnge?
do you know how to compress photos that have been uploaded to Google Photos and thus taking space of google drive quota? thanks!
Thanks for the detailed tip and step by step guidance. it really helped me out
Great tutorial - but before watching this video, I had already clicked on Free Up Space option. Now those photos must have got deleted from my phone? Any way to undo it?
Hi thanks for the kind comment and so sorry to hear this. There are some things you can try - and obviously try them quickly
Go into google photos, either on the app, or better (because it's easier to see) on a desktop browser.
Go into the recycle bin/bin/trash folder
Google photos keeps things there, if they were deleted there - for 30 days.
Fingers crossed they are there.
There's also an archive folder in Google photos - it's on the left hand side bar - the 'clean up' may have only put the folder and pictures in there.
You can restore from Archive folder.
Other options:
Go to takeout.google.com while logged into your account - quickly - and this is where you can download everything Google has stored on the account. The pictures and folder may still be there
I have a video walkthrough here:
ua-cam.com/video/9lU-jfTKf5s/v-deo.html
Hope something here helps and thanks again - good luck!
I’ve done this a couple of times! Thank you!
Awesome. All the tips helped me a lot
Thanks for the kind message @elmarton6972 - good luck with your Google Photos storage...
In your Google Photos app on your phone,
Click on your avatar on the top right hand corner
Scroll down to photos settings and click on it
Scroll down to "SD card access" and click on it
Follow the instructions
You're so close to resolving this - good luck!
