Every single scene on The Office is close to perfection IMO. The acting, the mannerisms, the body language - just incredible. When you watch the actors in the background who don't have speaking parts and they're still completely immersed in the scene. Gareth here, for example, when Brent is saying "Let's grow ourselves a big lanky, goggle-eyed freak of a son" he's in the back and starts to shake his head when David goes too far. It's just brilliant. Also when Jimmy goes in for another kiss and Gareth pushes him further towards Dawn. The little things make this so good.
I love the way David Brent desperately tries to banter with them and then when he oversteps the mark he gets all defensive and tries to turn it on Nathan in order to keep face. Only David Brent could enter a situation involving Gareth and two grown men that call themselves Jimmy the Pervert and the Ogg Monster and make things even more cringey. Truly remarkable acting.
Gareth has the best facial expressions 🤣 Look at him when Nathan and David are going at it. Gareth's just awkwardly standing there like a child between two uncles arguing.
This show delivers human interactions too well to the point where I get chills sometimes. I used to love American office more by It’s chaotic tension but as I grown older, I find British office giving this cringy and vague feelings that you can only feel in real life and I think I’m in love with it
The American Office is great escapist comedy, whereas the British show is borderline depressing in its accurate portrayal of workplace social dynamics. Both are good in their own right, but, for me, the UK one wins for its realism and artful depiction of cringe moments that happen in real life.
Mackenzie went on to write and star in The Detectorists which I highly recommend. Watched all 3 seasons as they came out. A nice gentle English slice of life show in the countryside. Unusual and high quality as only the English could come up with. Martin was great with Cumberbatch as Dr. Watson. A lot of depth of talent in this show. I respect there was only 12 episodes of this show, plus a Xmas special.
Detectorists was really good. My only gripe was his wife. Just didn't think she fitted that role with her husky posh voice. She's the spitting image of her mum when she was in the Avengers.

The best part for me are the moments leading up to Brent's blunder as Gareth goes from amused, to slightly uneasy, to shaking his head as if he's silently begging Brent not to talk about the Oggmonster's big eyes
