This is why I watch your videos... Your always pointing out the importance of keeping yourself safe... Thank you
I wish i watched it 11 days ago now i sit with separated shoulder looking for protection gear
I LOVE your attitude. I spent half of my budget on protective gear but I’m older and wiser and more fragile. That being said, I’ve always been safety conscious. Even at 17 when I bought my first bike (a used MZ 250), I also bought full leathers and a Bell star helmet.
These days, I’m an adventure rider doing about 70/30 on road/off road and I fall off quite a bit off road - slow speed tumbles. My choice of gear is ATGATT, Bell adventure helmet and a combination of Knox and forcefield body armour. No injuries so far, fingers crossed.
@MrWbodyperformance Thanks and we are glad you are ok. The message here is ride in your gear because you never know. You are spot on, we care because we all ride motorcycles as well.
I agree totally this is best under a jacket for sure.
Thank you! I am a seasoned rider but I (like most other ppl) needs reminding.
You are fine to leave the armor in the jacket as long as you have a good quality jacket. Most of the common brands do a good job with the armor. Over pants are a great way to go. Look to ICON and Scorpion as each have some excellent options.
Thanks for the feedback, glad we could help! ~Aubrey
Almost 10 years later, and Bryan's words still remain just as wise. Wear your gear, folks. Even if you're just a street rider, chances are you'll eventually go down in the most random, unexpected moment. One second you're enjoying your ride and the next second you're on the floor wondering "WTF just happened".
@F8H I see your point and for that reason I would go with the ICON Field Armor Vest. Protection does you no good if you do not wear it. I agree having to pull the back protector from the pack may create a situation where you are in a hurry and skip it.
Thanks for the compliment and the business!
@cochotrilo For stunting I would make sure the back, elbows, shoulders, hips and knees are covered. The chest may not be as important. I would think most of the falls would be low speed with little tumbling.
It's still so crazy to me how it's 2020 and it's still legal to ride here in CO without a helmet. T-shirt, flip flops, shorts, and no helmet blasting down the high way... It's mind blowing.
End of the day this is a free country (well it was before the Coronapocolypse). People should make what they feel is the best decision for themselves. The flip side of that is they also need to accept the consequences for those choices. - Van
@@sportbiketrackgear Well thought out, I agree with you. Thanks for the reply.
@siliconRain Around town offers twice the risk the track does. When riding on the street you have cars, opposing traffic, fixed obstacles, cell phones, old ladys etc... The track has one way traffic, no gravel and is designed to crash on safely (well as safe as possible anyway). Risk, reward - wear your gear
Not a bad idea, although most jackets have shoulder, elbow and pockets for back/chest protection. ~Aubrey
you guys are the best site to get any gear and parts. the extra effort you guys put into do reviews on video is awesome.
BEST WEB SITE BEST STORE AND STAFF PERIOD!!!!!!!
Snow in April makes me want to move to Texas! Thanks everyone
For street riding go with the knee armor that fits under the riding pants.
A lot of companies demo products on youtube, but it really impresses me that the guys at STG upload solid video reviews on nearly every piece of gear they sell. Next season will be my first @ the track, and STG has been the biggest help planning ahead for the right gear. I also totally agree with the safety mindset. Never make excuses and compromises w/ your gear. The day you ride without, may be the day you go down!
@Richardmagda Thanks for the advice. We will take this under advisement.
I have the same vest you’re wearing 👍🏻 thanks for another informative video
@F8H The SP Vest is a nice piece. If you are going KNOX I would suggest the Aegis and the chest, better match than the Kompakt IMO with the chest protector
There is stuff at every price point. The armor is cheaper than the hospital care or the missed work. Think of it as an investment in yourself
Proper gear can save your life and keep you in one piece. Personally never ride without
sir thankyou so very much for the information i have just recently purchased my bike without body armour but as you explain definiltly i will go first to purcahse protection thankyou once again for showing light to us on right direction cheers
Very Helpful. Im tryen to get permission to get a licence from my parents. I want them to feel that im safe. Im setting up a budget right now for everything i would need for when I finally go in for the purchace and this is very helpful. Keep encouraging safety. To many people die from motorcycle when its avoidable.
I love these videos. I like how the presenter is well spoken and seems very educated, using references such as "six degrees of separation" and using more articulate words, and making his videos very professional. It inspires confidence in future buyers, especially me. That being said, can I get a discount??? :)
Brian, thanks for all the advice--i'm a noob and know nothing about body armor--appreciate the enlightenment !
yes you wear a jacket over this. jackets dont have chest protectors and only have foam back protection/ you have to buy the platic ones seperately.
so you can add a vest to increase armour
jacket has the shoulder and elbow, and a little forearm.
Brian i just got my brother that icon armor and he loves it - saved his life too! can't thank you enough for the review had i not been convinced to get one i wouldn't still have a brother.
@scoutGOW We wear our gear and promote the same for sure. The way you are going about this is smart. Buy everything at once. If you can not afford the gear then you should not ride.
@Armacalypse Proper body armor can be the difference between serious injury and pain, life or death. This has been proven both in theory and real world results over and over again. If you are gonna ride wear your gear!
I'm sure you could, however, there is not a lot of perforation in this vest so you may not get the full effect.
I had an accident at high speeds 100 mph with all the gear and the only injury a had was a broken wrist, not even a scratch, there is no gunlets with wrist protrction, right? jaja,
There are plenty of full-gauntlet motorcycle gloves offering incredible wrist and forearm protection. Look for hard sliding parts around the gauntlet area and the heel of the hand that are (the protection) of relative thickness. Check out the Knox Handroid gloves (MKIII), which are sold at STG and which we also have reviewed on our UA-cam channel (MC Gear Hub). Cheers!
Anything would be better than just a t shirt for sure. It is all about risk and reward.
Hi! First, are you Bryan from the videos? lol.. I am soon buying an AS tech aero backpack, probably from you guys, but I'm not sure if buying an AS back protector and placing it in the backpack as you show on the tech aeros's video or buying the icon field armor. The thing is I tend to do short rides about 3 times a week or so in really short rides so I don't know if it would be too much of a hastle taking it on and off for such small trips. (own a shift air avenger, no back protection) Thanks!
Well put thanks for putting videos like this and looking out for us out there always like knowing whats the latest protection. As I get older I care more about protection rather than fashion and basically I don't care if its fashion or overkill. Like you said it's about you first.
of course under a jacket that has it's own elbow etc protection as well
I would (and use myself) the back and chest
To what extent is armour necessary for around-town riding, highway riding, commuting etc?
I notice most of the armour protects the chest and back, but I can't see how those areas would ever take impact unless you're doing 100 miles an hour around a track on a sports bike and end up sliding 50 meters on your back along the road.
Good message, though, and great video.
Hes absolutely right! I going to be a first time rider soon and ive done so much research in protective gear! I see riders out here daily not wearing gear and helmets or armor and ask myself how they can be so careless! I understand budget is something many deal with but its much better to hold out until you can buy gear b4 riding imo! Something is much better then nothing! Im going to be buying the field armor hes wearing, a pair of gloves and a helmet for the time being! Better then nothing!
@F8H I am 99% sure it will as long as you do not have a ton of other stuff in the pack
The field armor is great, but what i think ya'll need to mention and make clear is that that vest is meant to be worn under a jacket. wether it be a leather or textile. The misconception a lot of riders have of this vest is that its going to protect them from a fall just by wearing this vest alone. It will, but only if one falls flat on its back or chest and not ones elbow, shoulder, forearms, & the sides(ribs). I seen riders fall wearing the vest and seen their disappointment, its not good.
Yeah I totally agree with you, I've seen this thing fail on the street personally, but unfortunately it is one of the best selling body armor pieces out there. The new 2012 now have the D3O back padding which is in a lot of top of the line protection gear from First Gear TPG gear that I personally use. It's ok I guess, but not to be worn by it self.
Nice - glad you like it! ~Aubrey
@F8H I've been researching a little more in your site (nice range of products btw) and I've come to the conclusion that chest protection is really important too, so now I don't know if save up some more money and getting the Alpinestars SP vest which provides back and better chest protection than the icon (IMO) or investing even a little more and getting the Knox Kompakt and buying a separate Knox chest protector and just attaching it to the Kompakts straps. What do you think? Thanks again!
Thanks for not only being an excellent business promoter, but for actually caring, makes a difference.
Plastic is more affordable and offers flexibility to reduce energy transfer. I do not believe Titanium would be a solid choice as an armor material
Just wanted to say thanks for all of your great reviews, very informative truly helps in decision making.
@Sportbiketrackgear Seconded. Decided to part ex my Aprilia for a Duc 749 over here in the UK. A few weeks later, my buddy comes and says "What's with the new boots/helmet/gloves? I thought you were gonna get a new bike?"
No point buying the bike until you've gopt decent gear. All my old kit was trashed.
Can you wear something like the Icon body armor under leathers? My alpinestars have plastic shoulder armor, I'm not sure if the armor would fit underneath.
@Sportbiketrackgear Ok, I guess I'll get that one then. Would it fit in the tech aero backpack? The main reason I want the backpack is to put all my protective gear away when I get to the destination. (my knee guards, gloves, helmet, and well, if possible also this vest) Thank you very much!
I recommend those padded shorts, my ass is flat and one day I crashed mountain biking while cornering I fell on my ass. hurt for weeks
Protecting your body should be common sense... it's sad how many riders don't get it, hence why motorcycle insurance is sky high in the USA and Canada :(
My leather suit, boots etc saved my sorry ass from highsides lowsides and them some, walked away every time !!!
STG FTW !!! you guys kick ass !!!
Ok so im getting a bike this coming summer, winter in canada so ill be waiting a few months. I know its kind of a newbie question but I really want to remain in one piece if I go down. Is the idea behind the body armour to be used on its own or in combination with jacket/suit?
Can I just ask, why do you say sportbiketrackgear twice, one after the other, when you mention the website?
Thanks for the opinions bro. This video actually made me think twice.
I cant seem to find the same exact vest youre wearing, know where i can? It goes best with my Kali helmet
julian delgado it's a discontinued model. Icon has made a new improved version of this, but it will be pretty hard to find this exact model.
@machoptics I was in the middle of a broken collar bone when we shot this one.
@Sportbiketrackgear i agree b4 i bought my bike i spent 2 k just on protective gear--- i currently own the IXS Stunt which saved my ass b4 but now for summer i jsut got a motocross body armou to deal with the hot weather... i am a bit worried how it will do when i crash
Excellent advice!!!!
0:39 wise words
No mixing words here. Thanks for watching!
I just recently crashed with gear on and cheap gloves, I even added a video about it, the most pain I suffered was from the cheap gloves, never again thanks,
Good gloves are essential, sorry to hear about your crash! ~Aubrey
already got the gear that I want in mind and I haven't started riding yet
+Fritz Krieger The way it should be! Thanks for watching!
hi brian im looking for a chest and a back protector for my 1 piece race suit.. you got any suggestion? currently all i wear under my suit is an icon stryker vest
@Sportbiketrackgear
Yes, but can you ever approach the safety of even a small car?
how much does the one your wearing cost? can i use a regular leather jacket(not motorcycle jacket? over that until o can afford something better? i got my permit today i bought a bilt helmet and gloves .and a ninja 250r all done today ive never ridden a bike lol im excited its like being a little kid with a new toy
The ICON Field Armor Stryker Vest is what Brian is wearing in this video and are $130.00. You should be fine wearing this under another leather jacket.
You guys rock! Love your videos! I'm a very pleased customer, keep up the good work!
@mostliberal The best is not always a reality for everyone. Buy what you can afford and protect yourself the very best your means allow for.
Brian the amor that you are wearing do you have any 4x5XL I'm a big guy size 15 Boot
great video and lots of information , thank you
@Sportbiketrackgear
okay, works for me. I was just curious.
very educational.. keep it up..
I understand what your saying about wearing armor but if the cheapest body armor starts at a hundred bucks then shouldn't you just use that money to get a better jacket, i.e. instead of a textile jacket with body armor just get a thick leather jacket.
Recently went down on a Ducati S2R at roughly 40mph. Had no gear on except a helmet. Worst part about the crash was the following road rash from wearing only jeans and a tee shirt. Typical statistic here I was heading to school no more than 3mi from home where I got clipped by a car which caused a wobble that I couldn't recover from. I had all the gear that could have prevented all my injuries but opted not to wear any since this was hot day, down the road from home and no more than 10mins on the road. After the accident I regret my decision for wearing pretty much nothing and getting off more than lucky to walk away. I got back on the bike and repairs and recovery now but since learning the hard way I am at ATGATT type of guy now. Invested roughly $600 on all near CE rated gear and protection. I got of lucky once and I know I did. I Agree completely "Something is better than nothing."
Chris - sorry to hear about your crash and glad you made it out of it alright. Good gear is important and you don't have to spend a fortune. Thanks for watching and your feedback! ~Aubrey
Same Bike very similar story but I had all my gear. (well I was wearing riding jeans leather jacket gloves boots ...). For me a bus pulled out so I hit the break. Unfortunately the front wheel was on a man hole cover so it slided away and i felt.
I practically walked away from it.
wearing only a t-shirt is really bad. I have a mesh jacket for the really hot days. For sure not the best protection for a 100mph slide but all the difference at 30mph between you walk away and rescuing your skin in the ER.
Good thing you were wearing your gear Christian, glad to hear that you were able to walk away! ~Aubrey
should you get body armor and a jacket?
can you wear a evaporative cooling vest under the icon stryker armor and it still keep you cool .. i live in arizona and it gets super hot out here ...i need to know if the icon stryker vest has enough ventilation to make the cooling vest work ... can someone tell me ... thanks ..
what im really worried about while riding is getting impaled when crashing or falling off a bike. my friend and i was doing 30kph on a freeway then he crashed the chest and back protector helped but his stomach got impaled 6inch broken tree branch, good thing he survived that day but after that ive been looking for a body armor that can also protect the lower part of my chest but with no avail.
What else do you wear or would you want to wear with the armor? There are some full jacket style armor pieces that have a larger chest protector that extend down the torso a bit more. ~Aubrey
im wearing the same as the guy in the video if you know a brand please tell me.
There are several, check here:
stores.sportbiketrackgear.com/Categories.bok?category=Body+Armor%3AVest
thx
Alpinestars track Vest, you won't regret believe me.
Tell me about it, I nearly got nailed 3 times in one day.
I alway ride with my jacket , helmet (Gmax 68 S) and gloves (Mechanix with Hard rubber finger guards and palm pads).
Next on my list is a Cortech jacket with the hard armor plates built in.
urgh i think from watching all the other videos iv seen on different product from you guys has made me value and trust your opinion, so after seen this, I wont be upgrading my cbr until after i prioritise my gear.
a cool bike isnt as cool when you cant ride is because you didn't have the gear to prevent you from riding after your accident. Thanks for your advice. :)
@JoshSP2022 He mentions his username and where on the web he's from.
@hunter I almost jumped too haha.
I like this guy though; you can never put too much emphasis on safety. Who's gonna care about how fly you look when you're paralyzed in the hospital? I think spending the extra money for protection is a smart idea that will pay off in the long run.
you can still have fun while being safer at the same time, which seems like a win-win situation, and body armor seems to be a good way of helping with that.
How safe is the best motorcycle armor really? For me to get on a motorcycle it would require at least 100 pounds of hardened steel covered in air bags.
@politeasskicker I never said about falling at 45 miles an hour , I said people ride safer at low speeds so they don't fall off ! big difference.
@JoshSP2022 My mama always told me "practice makes perfect"
@politeasskicker I agree about being protected 100% Just I think in reality this guy on the video would do better in relation to customers if he asked what kind of rider you are first and then see how comfortable they are with full protective gear and less protective gear and find whats comfortable for them.
Dude, if and when I come in to your store lookingfor a frame slider or a pipe, please don't try to suggest that I'd buy a jacket or a glove and if you do, and keep doing that to your customers, I dont think you'd stay open too much longer.
I like this video. It shows you care.
Great video thanks for all the information XD.
I wander if a bulletproof vest will be the best body armor for motorcycle
i dont know but they do make armor completely made of cardon fiber
@Richardmagda
Yo, it's all cool, make sure your remaining relatives know to put your trashed bike up as a
"for parts" bike so the rest of us can get some deals!
do you wear this over your leather jacket?
Usually you wear this under a jacket or some people wear it alone. Thanks for watching! ~Aubrey
Disagree completely. Is it the best, no, it is better than wearing nothing and it is very affordable
nice product
all armour is plastic, LOL
what else will they make it from? titanium?
@meanhead1337 Thanks
respect
@bigbad1000do7a Thank you
it's not even CE rated, the chest is about a quarter inch thick of the cheapest foam I don't see how it could offer any sort of protection what so ever having held it in my hands and looked it over, there are some great companies out there that make great armor- forcefield, dainese, alpinestars, knox....icon is not one of those
