In this video, Adam goes over a very important element in the golf swing, the set position. The set position consist of two elements, downward pressure on the grip and the turn of the shoulders to bring the club up without arm lift. When a golfer achieves the correct set position, it allows the golfer to turn abck and through delivering a downward blow onto the golf ball to compress and launch the ball further with more efficiency.

This is probably the top tip for the golf swing I’ve ever seen. It makes so much sense when most instructors have us waiting to set the wrists. Reminds me of Rory Mcilroy’s swing drill.

As a player almost 70, i shortened my swing, half way back, full follow through, l spent hours in the first lockdown practicing it, and hitting air balls. I actually regained most of the distance i lost with age. Bonus, more consistent and more control.

I took this drill to the driving range tonight and it was very satisfying. I found that I naturally swung back with more fluidity and my transition was better as I was going back on the right path. I hit 105 yards with my pitching wedge with a pretty slow and smooth swing, thanks for this!

I remember a video where Rory talked about pushing down with his left hand just as Adam said. Is this what you referring to, or was it a different video?

Ive been struggling with an Achilles injury, so kost the ability to push hard off my keft leg. This has been so valuable to me to have simply better, simpler mechanics and maintain reasonable (if not better) contact than Ive ever had.

Excellent analysis. Two important things that I'm not doing that he brought up: 1. Extend backswing staying away from too far inside
    2. Hinge and hold down through to contact

And the great thing about this tip, is that you still keep the left arm straight so even with the early hinge and set, so you still feel like you have plenty of width to the swing.

I feel like this student could use more width still. His left arm is quite bent at the top of his swing. A drill I like for width is taking the club back with the left hand only, until the left arm is parallel with the ground, then putting the right hand back on the club and turning to the top of the swing. This has helped my own swing a lot because I get narrow as well.

Great explanation! So before contact, is there is there a flip of the wrist to get the whip action at impact? I hope that makes sense.

Unfortunately, I need the width in my backswing. I have a tendency to pull the club back inside too harshly on the take-way and then I get stuck behind my right side in the downswing.
The question here is: do you need more width or more lag set early on in your backswing.
With this approach, I could see my hands getting too active in the takeaway. I do see the value for some golfers to do this.
It will definitely shorten your backswing if you're an over-swinger which leads to more consistent flushes.

  • @systemoptimizer3542

I've had some success with this, and feel the width maintained and effortless power, but sometimes I feel like the push down may cause a steeping of shoulder tilt, a lowering of head, and a loss of posture swinging back. Guessing you might have encountered this before with your students. What do you think causes this to turn into a fault instead being solid and efficient? What would you suggest to watch out for as far as doing this incorrectly?

Would you recommend this through the bag Adam, or is it more specific to irons? I ask as I would assume this to promote a downward angle of attack whereas the later hinge promotes a shallower attack angle perhaps better suited to fairway woods and driver?

the early hinge and set seems like an easier, more precise way to make a consistent backswing motion, but how do you explain so many pros that don't set early and seem to not fully set until well into the downswing? I realize there's more than one right way... It's hard to pick which way to go lol.

When you're heading down on the ball, The downward strike equalizes out the path going a little to the left and makes for a straight ball flight.

Your system is good for many. But as you know many good pga players take the club back with it behind their hands as opposed to club head in front of hands.
