An hour at FDNY Brooklyn Borough Command

- We are at Brooklyn Borough Command of the FDNY on Tillary Street and Gold Street off of Flatbush Avenue, where we see FDNY Hook and Ladder 110, Engine 207, and Battalion 31 (acting Battalion Chief today), as they go on a few different runs in the span of an hour. 110, 207, and 31 are housed with Division 11, Satellite 6, and the Mobile Emergency Response Vehicle (MERV). On the first run, 110, 207, and 31 respond to a call of a fire. Unfortunately, the call location information was wrongly sent to them. They responded to Nassau Street, but the call was for Nassau Avenue, somewhere else in Brooklyn. The second call we see is Engine 207 responding to a call of a person having seizures in the lobby of Civil Court on Jay Street. Luckily, the person was already being tended to by EMT's and was OK after being taken to the hospital. The third call we see is Engine 207, H&L 110, and Battalion 31 as the respond across the street to a vehicular accident involving a civilian and the Brooklyn Borough Chief. Apparently, the chief's black Chevy Suburban got t-boned by the tan Toyota. There were no injuries to either party and the only damage was a dent on the passengers side back door of the chief's truck. You can see the Borough Chief in the white shirt. Engine 207 is a 2010 Seagrave Marauder, H&L 110 is a 2003 rear mount 100 foot ladder. Both Battalion 31 and Division 11 are 2009 Chevy's. Enjoy all of the action from Borough Command. I had the pleasure of visiting this station in the fall of 2014, it's huge. The firefighters were so nice and I bought a T-shirt from them which I love.

Mack Produced one Super Pumper System for the Fire Department of New York City. It was delivered in 1965 and its first fire was on August 12, 1965. It answered 2,200 alarms and was placed out of service in 1982.
The system included a Super Pumper, Super Tender, and three satellite tenders. The combinations of tender and/or satellites used at any particular fire depended on the situation.
The proposed cost in 1965 for the Super Pumper System including the Satellite Units was $87500000

The Super Pumper and Super Tender were delivered to FDNY in 1965 and placed in service that same year. Their first major fire was on August 12, 1965. The Super Pumper and Super Tender responded with 3 satellite hose tenders, which were called Satellites 1, 2 and 3, and the satellites were all Mack C models carrying 2000 feet of 4 1/2 inch hose, equipped with Mack diesel engines and manual transmissions. Overall, the Super Pumper system answered 2,200 alarms, and went out of service in 1982.

Lastly, just to clarify another difference between Canada (and much of Europe) and what you see in the U.S. - paramedic services are municipally run services in Canada whereas in the States they are between fire department and many, MANY different private companies. So in Canada, medic ambulances don't sit in firehalls; they are their own services with their own 'bases' (essentially halls, with supplies, equipment, food, sleeping etc. for downtime between calls and coverage runs)
(cont'd)...from there, the call taker relays your information, as you answer their specific questions, to the dispatchers. There will be an initial dispatch put out on the fleet's primary radio channel (Alpha), then the medic will be asked to switch over to a secondary (Beta or Charlie) channel for further details. Fire dispatch works similarly, and simultaneously. It sounds confusing, but it's VERY powerful, flexible and FAST when you need to get all three services responding together.
Not always mandatory, depends on the department and the state. But yes you are right most fire departments are requiring emergency medical technician certification.
Also, don't forget that oftentimes dispatch has only very limited information, or are in the process of gathering more details. In North America - and again, based on my own exp. here in Ontario Canada - we have VERY stringent response time targets that we have to meet. Therefore, within 40-seconds of a call coming in to 911, something needs to be dispatched. Paramedic or Fire. If it's a VSA (vital signs absent), unconscious, or MVC (motor vehicle collision), everything rolls...
The super pumper and tender are no longer in service. They were deactivated in the 70's. FDNY does not update the signs on firehouses. Also that is a mobile command post vehicle not a MERV. MERVs are used by EMS and are stationed at FDNY EMS divisions .

A hook & ladder is a fire truck with pike poles and an aerial ladder. Usually, but not always, a large quint.

The Super Pumper and Super Tender were the trucks the FDNY used when they had to respond to an all hands working fire. They didn't want to use their front line engines and stress them out, so they used their Super Pumper and Super tender, along with Satellites 1, 2 and 3 to fight the fire. The original tractors were an F model, probably from 1967. Now out of service, you can see the original Super Tender trailer going to and sitting at fire musters by a later model Mack Superliner tractor.
They didn't use the Super Pumper on all hands. It went to major fires only. Now, every house that has a satellite unit houses a pumper which is rated at 2000gpm.
''Hook and Ladder'' is the name of the company, very rarely is a piece of apparatus actually referred to as a Hook and Ladder Truck, especially in the city of New York, where Aerial ladder's are called "Sticks" and the Aerial Platforms are called "Tower Ladders", the Tractor Drawn Aerials are called "Tillers"
seems like a busy house, I know you said it was an hours span, what is the time frame between calls? mins from return to quarters to next one?
the reason this is done is that most of FDNY stations are infront of (at times) busy sidewalks so this forces someone to stand and block pedestrian traffic and then once is truck is clear they can shut the door, a lot of people wont stop for the red truck with lights flashing

Well ! In FDNY we have a Battalion Chief, Division Chief, Engine Company, Ladder Company, Special Operation Company, we have FDNY EMS BLS Ambulances, HazTac Ambulances, MERV but my question is : When service do chaplains serve? FDNY EMS ?

i was wondering the same, but you figure that to find the actual streets and numbers and the best route on the map and a whole lot of stuff to account for. I don't know how it works in a big city yet, but that is my guess.

its a vent. they attach it to the exhaust pipe on the trucks to vent out the gas
I'm not sure about the super tender, but the super pumper was a Mack Semi-tractor that pulled a special trailer that had a large pump and a large water tank in the 1960's.
The super tender was a basically a giant hose wagon that responded with the super pumper
Most fire departments run a tight budget already and most of the stations in NY are not the newest state of the art places the doors are most likely were put in from the early 60's or 70's the doors possible be from when the station was built.

Why did they get rid of all the excursions? I know Ford doesn't make them anymore but theirs the expeditions.
(cont'd)...so every call that goes in to 911 starts out by going to that metro or regional call center - typically the police. They'll answer "Police, Fire or Paramedic?" From there, they seamlessly patch the caller over to Fire or Paramedic call takers (who are often not in the same building, often completely different parts of the city) literally without a second's lag. But the Police call taker will remain on the line and monitor just in case they determine from your info that PD is needed...

How long have you been interested in or following FDs? I'm not trying to be a jerk, but seriously, I thought the stereotype of us only being FIRE fighters went away long ago. In Canada, it's mandatory that everyone in the FD is First Aid + CPR Level C. In the U.S., I believe they are the same but also often have more highly trained EMT and Advanced care paramedics within most halls. In Canada, it's tiered response with Fire often being First Response until Paramedics (Primary and Advanced care)
110 is a ladder not a hook and ladder a hook and ladder is a tiller (tractor trailer looking) 110 was a tiller before they upgraded to a stick

A long time ago, the Super Pumper was a vehicle which was dispatched to large fires and could pump with the capacity of several regular pumpers. The super tender carried large diameter hose, etc. Neither has been in active service since the 70's

Engine stretches a line in case of fire and attends ot medical needs; truck blocks traffic and gets entry to car disconnect battery; chief in charge. so to answer your question.....no.

The fact that I asked the question should pretty much tell you that I don't claim to know the policies. FDs being trained to give first aid makes perfect sense, but intentionally responding to a medical situation with a unit that's specialized for something else just seems weird to me. At least here in europe they'd just dispatch an ambulance unless the extra equipment is needed to get to the person.
FDNY EMS responds on average to about 4000 to 4500 calls a day. On a warm day like today, that total can be close or in excess of 5000. The fire apparatus respond so that some trained personnel are on scene if EMS is not.
I know what you're saying. It's also very expensive to send out the trucks compared to having a 'coverage' vehicle (that is, an ambulance that's on the road in their district) attend. But sometimes units are all tied up and the only first responder avail. is a pump or rescue. Don't forget, these trucks are often equipped with AEDs as well as medic bags. Minus the expanded selection of drugs that an Advanced care medic is licensed to dispense, most 1st response pump/rescue trucks are well suited.

If u no how the department works the engine and ladder are different so each of them doesnt have to be called at the same time to the same scene in fact the alarm for the engine was a few minutes after the truck and when it did go through they were out in less then a min so chill with the arrogant comments
I understand why they did it, because it was a boss, but isn't it a waste of resources to commit an engine, ladder,and battalion to what's essentially a fender bender across the street from the firehouse?

Each borough has a 3 star chief who is designated the borough commander. The brooklyn borough commander is housed there.
