  • "Studentenchor" ("Students' Chorus") from "Hoffmanns Erzählungen" ("The Tales of Hoffmann") by Jacques Offenbach
Cologne Male Voice Choir (Kölner Männer-Gesang-Verein, KMGV)
    Neue Philharmonie Westfalen
    Conductor: Bernhard Steiner
    Live at Kölner Philharmonie 06/24/2017
In 2017, the Cologne Male Voice Choir (Kölner Männer-Gesang-Verein, KMGV) celebrated its 175 year anniversary. It was founded in 1842 to raise money to continue building the Cologne Cathedral, a purpose shared with the Zentral-Dombau-Verein (ZDV) that was established at the same time. The anniversary concert on June 24, 2017 was a joint celebration of ZDV and KMGV.
Jacques Offenbach (born in Cologne in 1819) and the Cologne Male Voice Choir (founded in 1842) have a shared history: there were joint concerts, and Offenbach is said to have written at least one song specifically for the choir. This piece, the brilliant students' choir from Offenbach's "The Tales of Hoffmann" has been part of the choir's repertoire for decades.
