This Olympia just creeps me out in the best way possible. I still can’t tell if they got a really good actress or they stole one of the mechanical characters from a Disney ride.

Yes! And I like the way they didn't go too overboard with the "doll" or "robot" aspect in her outward appearance. Other productions can be _super_ inventive when it comes to Olympia's costume and makeup, which is great and all, but ultimately I get the sense that a lot of these designers forget that the humor comes largely from the fact that our protagonist and Olympia's other admirers are so lovestruck that they _don't realize that she isn't real._
Personally, I figure being so charmed by her beauty and talent and grace could excuse a lot of her "eccentricities" (that are actually mechanical failures or technical limitations), but ignoring the _gears_ sticking out of her back or the fact that she looks like a life-sized version of a _little girl's toy_ would be a bit much to ask.

Honestly, this is probably my favorite version of the song, mostly because of the actress playing Olimpia. She PERFECTLY captures the way the character was described in the book.
“Yet it’s very strange that several of us have formed pretty much the same opinion about Olimpia. We think she is - you won’t take it ill, brother? - that she is singularly statuesque and soulless. Her figure is regular, and so are her features, that can’t be gainsaid; and if her eyes were not so utterly devoid of life, I may say, of the power of vision, she might pass for a beauty. She is strangely measured in her movements, they all seem as if they were dependent upon some wound-up clock-work. Her playing and singing has the disagreeably perfect, but insensitive time of a singing machine, and her dancing is the same. We felt quite afraid of this Olimpia, and did not like to have anything to do with her; she seemed to us to be only acting like a living creature, and as if there was some secret at the bottom of it all.”

There is a reason for the great acting- the Director Walter Felsenstein. I've seen this movie before, along with, as I recall, his films of Otello, The Cunning Little Vixen, and, I think, Don Giovanni. He came to Boston University where I was studying, showed his movies, and gave a lecture or two. It was wonderful.

She takes it super slow. Also, it's weird that it's in German.
Her movements are super robotic and creepy... I like it. I wonder if she recorded her singing separate from the movement. Her voice seems disembodied, like it's not even coming from her.

I like the fact that prerecorded vocals let's her have far more freedom with the robotic movements. If you look close, it's like she isn't even breathing. I can not stop watching this clip. The aesthetic, her movements, her voice, the incredibly attractive woman in the suit, and his freaking glasses...I love it all. Especially his glasses. I want them! I also love how Olympia's dress sets her apart from the crowd and adds to her eeriness.

They probably recorded her singing first, it made great effect that the sound didn’t seem to come out of her mouth, made her seem less of a living creature and more of a tool, since she’s an automaton anyway

I can't get enough of how Nicklausse is trying so hard to be subtle about the fact that Olympia is an automaton to Hoffman. In other words, "he" is trying to give Hoffman the chance to figure it out on his own, let him down easy, but Hoffman just isn't picking up on it. Probably my favorite part of the entire opera! 🤣

Why did I not find this version years ago? This is as close to the perfect as you get. Not only the acting, but certainly the way it is sung. I love the slow tempo - which makes the doll feel far more mecanical and unreal than the speedy versions we use to hear. Also, many sopranos take this song as an opportunity to show off their sky high notes - I think the song is actually better as we hear it here - the way it was originally written .....

1st learned of Tales Of Hoffman from watching Patricia Janečková's version of Olympia. Have seen a bunch since.
Must confess that Olympia infatuates me as Christine does from Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom. & this Olympia is the most automaton-like. She moves with a mime's skill. I would go so far as to say that this is so far the definitive portrayal of the character.
But...am most open to being corrected.

Hm. Must consider and cogitate. My initial impressions are...as purely personal preference, you understand...that her mechanical mannerisms, so to speak, are exaggerated. She emotes just a bit excessively. But I'm also loathe to think uncharitablly or unchivalrously of a lady. You can see how abysmal a music and drama critic I would make.

In my opinion Sofia Fomina's performance at the Royal Opera in 2016 is the best in terms of acting. She struggled with the high notes but she aced the robotic movements and mechanical sounds, even managing to be funny while doing it.
I love Melitta Muszeli's take on Olympia here, but it's a bit tainted by how this movie adaptation (in my opinion) completely lacks the comedy the opera is supposed to have.

The art like this is probably best performed in European country that has good cultural background and that isnt to developed at the the time of its creation. Its quite probable that the performers were underpaid (since this was filmed in East Germany)but still their dedication is amazing. Every character deserves a lead role.

The stage direction and Olympia is brilliant, the best I've seen, but the slow tempo subdues what should be equally brilliant coloratura

    • @jimbuxton2187
      @jimbuxton2187 Рік тому +3

The " brilliant coloratura " is in the range and precision of the intervals...not the speed. It's easier to sing it faster because you can't hear all the pitches as accurately.

This Hoffmann has a nice tenor voice, but funny, he looks more like Pierre Bezukhov from Tolstoy's "War and Peace" than the Hoffmann of the stories and the Offenbach opera. And I join others in praising the mezzo who performed Nicklausse; if I were Hoffmann, I would be paying attention to her as my Muse and not be noticing this Olympia, despite those enchanted glasses.

Folks who like this movie should really check out the Powell-Pressburger version, reportedly one of Martin Scorsese's favorite films. That film is not strictly a filmed stage work/opera as this seems to be but a wonderful blend of opera, ballet and cinematic fancy.

You know, they did oh phenomenal job of making her look uncanny mean and nearly human. Because it’s obvious that they try to make it look more doll liked and they did a human like. That’s why she looks a little creepy, but I actually like that aesthetic about this, I think it fits.

Katherine, I couldn't agree with your comments any more. You are so correct in thinking that this sounds infinitely better in the German than in the French!! I have watched this at least 50 times and I am amazed at how funny it is with Nicklaus being so annoyed and critical of Hoffmann's delirious infatuation with Olympia [as is everyone else in the audience]. Dr. Spalanzani is also very funny with his wind tunnel hairdo, his hovering over Olympia to keep her from running into a wall, his expressions as her singing falters and his frantically fanning her when she collapses on the harp.
I was so shocked to find this incredible video. I had seen the opera in French at the Kennedy Center about 15 years ago and was only impressed with Sumi Jo as Olympia as she did an incredible job of singing as she danced. The rest of the opera did not compute at all.I did not see anything at all funny about it. It should be noted that Offenbach was born in Germany and moved to France when he was 14 years old and so is not really French, but German. He spent the last 3 years of his life trying to complete Hoffmann, but at the time of his death he had " completed the entire piano score but had orchestrated only the Prologue and the Olympia act
I saw the below UA-cam piece from the Prologue about Kleinzach. I do hope some one will put up the COMPLETE OLYMPIA ACT 1 of this fabulous Hoffmanns Erzahlungen!!

I feel like I've watched it about twenty times. I need to catch up with you! Thank you for all the wonderful information and your great descriptions of the action and characters. There isn"t anything I don't like about this production. Sylvia Koziemski is perfect as the muse. I cannot take my eyes off her when she is on screen. I would love to find out more about her but even on German language websites, I cannot find out much about her career. The expressions and eye movements of the guests crack me up every time I watch and every time I watch, I see someone else in the background that makes me smile. After searching and searching I finally found this on DVD. It is part of a 12 DVD set in honour of the opera director Feldenstein. I'm so tempted to buy the collection but including postage it would be way too expensive for me. It is a relatively new release, so I hope it will become cheaper as time goes on.
PS I would love to see Sumi Jo on stage!
