Vintage Vox amps have that and couldn't seem to replicate it in the modern amps vox makes today. You can get it done with modern builders obviously but vox is the name and THEY didn't do it. 🤷🏻♀️ Glad I've got my amps covered and long enough ago to get em dirt cheap👍
The note definition is astonishing. Every note in multiple lines and chords is just laid out in front of you. Dirty or clean, it makes no difference. Wonderful sounding amp.
Dang - the grunt on that overdrive is epic. Pretty much everything played through this amp sounds like something Billy Gibbons would have played in the 70s. I mean, everything from Just Got Paid through Blue Jeans Blues would be monstrous through this thing. (Granted, so would millions of other things). Glad I got to listen.
This was great, I understand what you're saying about the feeling. I started playing guitar back in 1974. Skip forward to 2005, a close friend allowed me to keep an original 1971 Marshall 50W Plexi with a matching 4x12 Cab from the same year. Within the first 30 minutes of playing I was trying to figure out what I could sell to purchase an amplifier just like it. A responsive amplifier can make all the difference, and usually does. I'm sure amplifiers like those designed and built by Amplified Nation make a huge difference. Great content, thank you.
That amp with the Les Paul is the absolute perfect tone IMO, perfect clean tone, perfect dirty tone. That combination is magical. I liked the clean tone a lot with the Strat but it didn't even come close to the LP on the dirty channel.
My brother and I have both been watching you're videos for about 3 years Just wanted to say we love them. You inspire and teach us very valuable things. Thank you. 😊
That sounds great! I don't know exactly how to describe it, but the best clean tone I've heard since a Train Wreck a number of years ago! Great review Phil !! 8) --gary
Sounds VERY good. The lows, mids, and high frequencies all gel together REALLY well. That surprised me the most. I’d give it 5 out of 5 stars. For the price it probably should…. And we’ll, it does. This is a great amp.
The interview with the amp builder was excellent. The amps sound great. The tweaks he made may very well make his amps as collectable by those that can afford them as Dumbles are to the majors.
I played a Dumble Overdrive Special for about 20 minutes. I'm not sure who it was made for originally but whoever it was liked his mids out and in yer face. I was impressed by it's powerful blast.
I love them pure nickel strings! I use them on everything I have - including the flat wounds I use, too. but, the last several months I custom ordered a 10-48 set for my two strats (pretty much the same gauge as the GHS Gilmour set but in pure nickel and a round core). as the kids say, these are the bomb!!!
The Overdrive channel sounds like the 70s. The best way I can describe it.. Sounds like Joe Walsh tone to my ears. Les Paul is the perfect guitar for that Amp...
I really love the sound of these amps. If I had to describe it in a single word- that would would be “sweet”. If the tone was a texture, it would be velvet, these amps are ridiculously smooth.
That was a killer lead tone and very crisp clean tones. I've always used a Marshall JMP and JCM and I've use a Fender black face and deluxe reverb and was good to play anything I wanted. I can totally understand why my friends always said the Dumble was their top favorite amp. It really does everything great.
I see what you're saying. I listen to dumble and think they sound great but i like a plexi or deluxe just as much, but the dumble does it all just as well. Was especially impressed with the cleans
Great vid Phil; I think we're all curious about these amps, I'd love to hear more about Amplified Nation and any other interesting makers like them. Thanks.
Really nice overdrive sound at about 6:15 min/secs. I'm listening on a THX certified system so I believe I have a pretty accurate representation. I also have golden ears...the clean beautifully warm, creamy and throaty...That amp makes even a strat sound good and I hate strats. Phill, I beleive your right just buy the amp and call it a day. I finally pluckned down the cash and bought a Marshall 100 watt JCM 900 and a 1960A 300 watt cab and What A SOUND! Not just the overdrive, beautiful no hiss sparkling cleans. You really need to start with a really good amp. I own about a hundred or more pedals and I'm not talking cheap pedals either and I don't need them all. They were a great learning experience but for all the dough I doled out for pedals I could have a few more great amps. Amps were also a lot cheaper a few years ago. My brand new Fender 1965 Twin Reverb reissue I got for about $850. Today you're going to shell out $1900. And, you have to have a Twin Reverd. Enough said. Good night Sally...
I have played a few Dumble. This really sounds true to them. Even through all the UA-cam compression it stands out. That just edge of break up is what I loved on them.
As great as this amp, and all these amps are, the choice of speakers and configurations has to be just as important. As they say in the movie, choose wisely.
From what I’ve heard Amplified Nation by far make the best sounding Dumble Clones ..but like most boutique amps your gonna pay for one ..since most people will never be able to afford an actual Dumble these are a great alternative 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Great video and great sounding amp!!! I own a Ceriatone OTS HRM 100 and i have to say that dumble amps or variations of these amps are amazing!! I played my amp with only a stratocaster for a while and when I plugged in my Les Paul type guitar it was a marriage made in heaven!! These amps love humbuckers…specially the overdrive channel.
I bought that same model amp in the combo version month ago....I usually play my PRS DGT thru it....amazing amp. I never thought the DGT would ever sound this amazing clean....I love to play just to hear the tone! wonderful amp.
@@silvel2edge I never recorded the DGT thru the amp. I have since sold the DGT. picked up a custom shop tele instead. the DGT was great but not the tone I was looking for. but I have to say it had the most amazing action and playability....I think what turned me off was that the pickups were too clear sounding...I prefer some mild grit in the clean tones.
Amplified Nations dumble is sweet, but if you want something truly special, you got to check out James Price's dumble over at Omega Amplification. It does what the Amplified Nation does, but it does it at any volume, with infinite headroom and infinite sustain. You can literally pick a note, hold it and hear it bloom and sustain forever or until you let it go. It's truly the holy grail IMHO. Would love to see Phil try one out on his show, and can put you in touch with the owner np.
I would really love to see a Dumble Amp used in a blind shootout with other amplifiers of varying prices. I often wonder if just knowing you're playing through a dumble amp or something that costs $175,000 might make you think differently of it. Anyway, great video. Great amp. Keep it up!
Well that is indeed a sweet sounding amp as I listened to this video through speakers. I don't blame you a bit for keeping thar gem . I agree that tone can be replicated as I have done so myself. It's truly a beautiful sound.
Thanks mate. I’ve got to say, after watching this I’m happy with my vibrochamp reverb and epiphone 335 and Boss OD3. It’s so close to the sounds here - no way it’s as good, but it’s much less of a gap than I expected.
Those overdriven bends reminded me of Ace Freely... and normally I wouldn't associate his tone with a Dumble..but I'm hearing Ace freely's tone when you played those overdriven bends
This amp is definitely on my bucket list. Which I hope I don't check out for many years after I finally get one. LOL cuz this is something I'm going to want to play on for a long time
Tellingly, on this occasion, you didn't just sit still as the video faded to black - you started playing your Strat thru' the amp again!! Maybe THAT'S what people pay for, the feeling that they don't want to stop playing whilst using these amps. Is that the secret? Great video, once again, Phil.
When you went from Les Paul to strat….that was remarkable, it didn’t thin out, like mr Dumble got a specific type of sensitivity within the circuit….not gain per say, more like character. I mean the strat sounded like a strat, Thinner smaller cleaner, IE single coil bark But the subtle grind character of both clean and dirty tone stayed the same. I’m an overdrive guy, MB…..flexible and reliable, and for what you get, reasonably priced in my opinion. But to change guitars I have to adjust the 5 band (big selling point for me) EQ. With that Dumble you really don’t have to do that😳. Fascinating video, I was literally shocked when the played the strat …..😮
Seriously, what I find in an amplifier is not only the tone but if it will make my playing a lot easier. I don't know if I am the only one who observes this but some amps make your playing a lot easier and some amps makes you dig deeper or do more of what you usually do just to get to the feel you want.
no two ways about it. Some amps really do just work with you. Your pick attack, and have tons of sustain that let's you create. Also gives you natural compression and a compressor, just like the pedal set right definitely makes things easier
It reminds me of my Fender Twin Reverb. Probably the 6L6 tubes as well as the reverb, but it has that low end too. That's on the clean tones. The overdrive is obviously very different though.
I just bought a Synergy with 4 different modules… a Soldano, a Dirty Shirley, a JCM800, and a Dumble, and although all 4 modules sound awesome, the Dumble one is by far my favorite. I love the flexibility of the Synergy, but I might need to save up for an Amplified Nation head now. Sigh.
Mr. McKnight… I don’t think better, more expensive gear makes you play better either. I think it inspires you to play better and enhances your artistic imagination. 👍🏽
Hi Phillip, great video thanks a lot. I am downscaling my amp collection right now in that regard that I try to get more versatile amps to replace a couple of the ones I own. The clean channel on the Overdrive Reverb sounds pretty close to that slightly scooped blackface sound. Do you think this would be a good substitute?

That as you call it dangerous clean / edge of breakup tone is simply amazing.

That reverb is amazing, even at quieter volumes, i think it makes the amp
The dirty sound on that amp is absolutely perfect
I honestly think this is the best I've ever heard you sound, Phillip! Not that you ever sound bad, but I can hear that you love this amp.
Phil, your playing has really progressed in all the years I've been watching your videos. Rock on, dude!
