Joe Bonamassa and Way Huge's Jeorge Tripps-a pair of experts that know a thing or two about tone-put their minds together for the ultimate Klon clone: the new Way Huge Deep State.
Available exclusively on Reverb, the Deep State delivers all of the dreaminess of the original for just $189.99, a mere fraction of the thousands of dollars you'd have to pay for a real Klon Centaur.
For such the ultimate Klone, it needed to be put to the ultimate test, so Joe set up two rigs. On one side, a 6-figure rig of the Klon Centaur, a vintage Burst, and a Dumble. On the other, the Deep State with an Epiphone Lazarus Burst and a Fender Sidekick Reverb 25.
Hear for yourself how the Deep State holds up. Act fast to order one yourself-supplies are limited and expected to sell out quickly.
#joebonamassa #wayhuge #deepstate #kloncentaur #dumble
And with that, the Fender Sidekick Reverb 25 is now quadrupling in value overnight
Dunno why, nothing special?
That was the weak link imo. Could have gotten closer with a Fender Champ

@@christiandossantos2687 Dude- you've been trolled- wake up for Christ's sake.
To be fair: Joe playing tightly wound dental floss with a toothpick, amplified through empty toiletpaper rolls would still sound better than most of us.
I think Joe’s point is that all you need is $200 pedals and just some basic equipment and just don’t lust after expensive gear for no good reason. You can like it that’s fine but it’s not gonna really make you sound very different. I think the guitar gear market is completely out of control so I agree with him. $1000 worth of gear today can sound like almost anything you want. After that, it’s up to you in your hands so you can save some money this way. I’m not even talking about playing live with the band where you can barely hear what you’re doing anyways at least most of the subtleties of this stuff gets lost and you just kind of hear the fundamental.
😂
😂😂😂😂
Fair point.. 😂
@@woofcity6307 so true my friend! All four of my electrics are under $700.00 and all my amps are small watt amps. I use 4 pedals and it makes a huge difference and I’m very pleased. I’ve had these guitars and amps for over 12 years now. I’ve an early 70’s peavy 260 with original 12 inch speaker cabinet. Might or might not be worth anything.
Joe, you need to mow the carpet. You might find more pedals in it.
He's too busy outside, vacuuming the lawn 😉
@@JJMewett LOL!
I read that he's got a rare vintage John Deere indoor shag carpet riding mower in his collection.....
For me it’s not the gear, but the dry humor that really brings out the tones.
The cheap rig is very splatty sounding but still perfectly usable. Great comparison
Great sonic characteristics and great tone is not inherently expensive.
Sounded a lot better than anything any of us had when we were kids.
not for nothing I kind of preferred the "cheap" rig. Could be my headphones, but there was a weird like EQ cut on the Dumble rig. like the low mids were rolled off.
The affordable gear didn't sound "splatty" (whatever the heck that means. . .) to me. It's probably the quality of the gear you are using to listen to the video that irreparably splats the audio experience. . .
@@retroman541 Yep you're absolutely right. My Neumann KH-150's in an acoustically treated studio are certainly are deceiving my ears. I'll be sure to upgrade my system to meet your standards. Thanks for the tip!
Never thought I’d see Joe playing an amp I actually own. I’ve had the same Sidekick since the late 90s as a home practice amp, and also as my main backup for all my live gigs, before I retired from gigging. People can say what they want about them, but I’ve owned it longer than I owned any of my other Fender/Marshall/Vox/Ampeg/Traynor tube amps, and it’s gotten more playing hours logged on it than anything else I’ve owned too.
Joe is such a character. Love it.
“My sound guy lets me crank it up” 😂
I wanna hear the 800$ Epi vs the real Les Paul both on the dumble with the same settings.
THIS. I wanted to hear the two guitars on a level playing field. While the cheap amp does its own fuzz thing, the Dumble allowed the guitar's tone to shine through even at the edge of breakup.
News flash, they won't sound much different. Maybe in the room there are nuances but all the tonewood, paint, name on the headstock are all marketing gimmick. Comes down to pickups and the amp. Amp will drive 95% of the overall "tone" that can be tweeked to compensate for small guitar nuances. Find a comfortable guitar that enspires you to pick it up and spend most of your budget on the amp. ua-cam.com/video/n02tImce3AE/v-deo.htmlsi=h9ipweb0aJ8Twp_y
I wanted to hear the skinnerburst through the Sidekick, and the Epi through the Dumble :)
Great idea!
2:43 when he comes off that 5th he choked down to the 4 he baaaarely pushing the G string up from the minor 3rd to almost maj 3rd but not quite. Very cool slight thing that makes so much difference.
Gotta go with the six figure rig.
I always do the six figure ones. I just count the numbers AFTER the decimal place. 😎
I've bought all this gear only to find out tone requires talent?
Hah. You have decent tone, mate - and great videos!
Joe, with this 1400 rig, you'll be able to get hugely high paying gigs within a week, even if you've never played before. It's called getting Bona-fied once you buy it.
But on a windy day those paperweights are very handy 😂
This pedal will change all that.
Welcome to the club JoePerkinsMusic!
That classic out of tune gibson sound 4:02 hahaha 🤣🤣🤣 The epiphone smoked it
I love that Joe who gets shredded for boring a cork sniffer and a gear hog is showing how you can get amazing expensive tone with affordable gear. You're the man Joe!
It’s refreshing to hear a truly honest opinion on gear. I enjoy Joe’s sense of humor and admire his humility. Thanks Joe!
CONCLUSION: IF WE PLAY GUITAR AS GOOD AS JOE WE WILL BE FINE....GREAT VIDEO AND REALLY COOL IDEA!

Or: Any unskilled player will sound just as bad on both cheap and expensive gear.
Of course both sound good. But the cork sniffers rig has a lot more clarity
Thats what I noticed
Let's be honest. Joe could make a hello kitty ukulele through a bullhorn sound as good as a burst and a dumble.

Both sounds great but man, these overtones and the warm tone with still enough clarity of the 59 is just awesome
I love how the Deep State through the Sidekick almost has a fuzz quality to the tone, just without all of the normal artifacts of a fuzz. Of course those fuzz artifacts are cool and are what makes a fuzz fuzzy, but sometimes you want that thick and smooth fuzz tone without those artifacts and that's really a tough thing to get with an actual fuzz. You have to pick so lightly and walk a tightrope of it being too dark and dull but if you try and pick harder or turn the volume/tone up more for more definition you get the artifacts. Super neat!
The tone lord has spoken! You must respect the tone.
JB has the coolest sense of fashion.
I may sound crazy, but I prefer that Sidekick over the Dumble... no matter which pedal is gong through it, though the actual Klon (with the Epihpone) into the sidekick sounded best to me.
Looks like it sold out already! Glad I snagged one.
Glad to see this video come out!! I spied the sidekick reverb in his long form video and so I knew something like this was coming, but had no idea about the Way huge deep state!! Sounds identical to me. I already have a sidekick reverb so if I don’t sound like Joe bonamassa I might have to look at my playing as the culprit 😁
I preferred the Deep State over the Klon when he was going into the Dumble. The upper mids helped the guitar cut through. Can hardly wait to get my JHS Notaklon going and try it through my rig.
Great job, Joe. That’s why guitarists everywhere think you’re the best. Taking care oh the peeps.👌🏻
LOL< A lot of us think Joe is the best thing since sliced bread, but he has a fair number of really serious haters. I do believe they're all extremely jealous of not only his command of the instrument, but has world class collection as well.
Hmmm, I feel like I've seen this before, maybe it was Welcome back to Nerdville lol great stuff, Joe, as always!! You'd make one hell of a coffee table book!!
How can you not love Joe? He's just a normal dude when he's not on stage. A normal dude with a TON of incredible gear.
Cork sniffers!
I've had a Sidekick Reverb 35 with a Celestion V-30, and have used it for gigging and teaching for almost 40 years. It always sounds great, and has never let me down, and has never needed servicing.
Very close but there is always the dynamic feel and how we guitar players react to the slight nuances especially at high volume levels. Thank you JB for doing these comparisons and showing the younger generation that you don’t need to spend a mortgage price to sound amazing. Much love and respect, Rastafari 🇯🇲!!! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🤘🤘🤘🤘🔥🔥🔥❤️❤️❤️🎸🎸🎸🎸
i like the sound of the econo-line rig. that dumble has a raspier, buzzier sound because of the tubes, that little solid state fender sounds a bit cleaner and neater.
..........and I'm listening to all this through my laptop speakers........
this is probably the best example of tone being in the hands of the beholder. It's all in his hands people. Joe Can make a cardboard box sound amazing!
What a gift Joe is.
Just love him.
Joe, is that the Music Go Round Boston Klon?
Joe B playing bursts? Yeah! Keep em´ coming!
I own Gibsons, but I’m not afraid to play my Epiphones at a gig either.
Probably the most important contribution in this whole gear discussion for the last 50 years.
I just received mine!! I am so excited that I got the signed one!!!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻🎸🎸🎸
Finally the push i needed to go and buy a ‘59 burst and dumble.
Did anyone expect that to be a close match up? Lol
That vintage green grass inspired carpet helps with the sound :)
It has a much fuller sound ,I think just the amp being a bigger speaker is the biggest difference to me ,
I have a peavey classic 30 from the 90’s that has a 12 “ speaker that ALMOST sounds as good as my super reverb & twin reverb
For me anything smaller than a 12 “ speaker the sound suffers considerably ,can’t seem to get the FULL sound out of the speaker !
Keep doing what you’re doing Mr Bonamassa ,you currently are the BEST blues / Rock player on the music scene !
Seen you live in Dayton Ohio ,across the street from Hauer Music Store on the “ 1st blues deluxe “ album & you rocked that venue my friend ! Sadly that place is gone ,seen Mr Duke Tomato there ,the next week the venue was GONE !
Swishes, spits. That's a Merlot.
yes yes yes. please more of these! i love this. hell add a mid price option as well. my only question is what are you comparing? overall sound of the pricey option to the sound of the cheaper? i mean, im down for that. but really sound is subjective, tone is what matters. seeing a cheaper kit come close in tone using various cheaper pedals and amps instills confidence in your purchase for those lower and mid grade parts. lol lets be real, you dont sell a vintage dumble, a vintage dumble sells itself, well at least i would think so, i wouldn't know. i do hope to see more of these. they are great.
I feel like we are seeing the super high end vs the super budget end. How about high end but achievable for mortals - an R9 with a notaklon and an ODS clone (Fuchs, bludotone, amplified nation, ceriatone etc)??
He's got humour too! Great! 😆👍
They both sound awesome coming from Joe's fingers! Put ME in charge of either rig and it would be a different story...
I have a Clapton Strat and a Fender LT-40S amp - don't need much else . 🎸🔊🔊🇺🇸🇨🇦🎼🏄♂️☮️
I bought a Sidekick 25 in 1987 with my first guitar, a 1987 MIJ Squier. That amp got stolen in about 1989. About 2 years ago my wife found me another one on Facebook Marketplace for $60. SO I have that now.
I usually play these types of videos through modeling amps, decent wattage and FRFR speakers, and the main difference is usually that the less expensive rig is much brighter and somewhat less resonant.
I thought joe hated pedals 😂😂
The Les Paul sounds a little bit clearer. The Epiphone sounds a little bit more midrange. I can't say whether in the context of a song or a live performance it would make a huge difference. I don't think so. I have a Squier and a Fender guitar and when I record them they sound almost the same, so it's kind of like this experiment.
5:40 … Very noticeable change in tone when the DS gets kicked in, unlike the Klon.
Great video! What a gear!
The Epi doesn't sound nearly as warm as the LP. I would have liked to have heard the Epi through the Dumble to see if it's the Dumble making the big difference or the LP.
Exactly
I had a Joe B Lazarus. I darned the fret board a bit and had it Plek’d - it played and sounded amazing. Stupidly I sold it to fund a genuine vintage Les Paul. I miss it so much. 😢
The Deep state sounds slightly compressed vs Klon to me. The Klon slashes a bit more in the high mids. I thought at first it was the amp so I’m glad you plugged ‘em both into the Dumble. The creamy butterscotch region of the tone sounds equivalent.
"Conspiracy theory diodes"! That's priceless! 😆
From there conspiracy theory pedal
That's it, I'm getting a 59 Les Paul and a Princeton Sidekick Reverb. lol.
I love these videos with Joe and I love Reverb.
They have the best prices for used gear.
Not gonna lie I hear a big difference but it's nothing that eq and mic placement couldn't change
If you know what you are hearing and listening to there is a huge difference, but average person will never know they are not the same rig. The difference is in the clarity, less muddy and more distinct notes even at Joe's speed.
I imagine your hearing a noticeable difference “in the room”… both sound good out here :-)
Solid state amps from the 80s and early 90s were great!
Yeah. I mean. Joe playing anything is going to sound great but u can def hear a difference btwn the two rigs and while one rig is out of reach for a lot of us,the epi/deep state/fender 25 rig does sound great!
Skills and knowledge, priceless and not for sale.
Knowledge is free
To me the best use of a Klon is setting the gain at 3:00 into a fairly clean amp and using the Klon for the overdrive, not as a clean boost
Close enough for rock and roll.
"It's the player!"🎸👍
I never realized how badly I had been ripped off until after I bought thousands of dollars worth of gear.
Jason, no worries man, the used market is awesome right now. If you want to sell something that's worth 1500 bucks all day long, I suggest jumping on the first 500 bid, cuz it's likely the only one. LOL I have 35 guitars I'm looking to move and I couldn't have picked a worse time. I'm going to wait until the current market firms up. I figure by 2038, I'll be good to go.
@@TheRange7 😂
Deep State sounds kinda muddy compared to the Klon in this video. There are also a ton of really good Klon clones out there for around $30. Love Way Huge though as a brand! I use their swollen pickle :-)
No fatter.Which is a good thing.Never liked the Klon.
@@peteyoung7665 Everyone likes a different tone :) I preferred the Klon in this video, but who knows what they'd sound like with my settings on my own setup. Might like the deep state more!
The dumble/klon/'59 sounds tremendous, but I guess i'd have to take the sidekick et. al and a house to play it in 🤷♂
My wife knows nothing about guitars/tone. I asked her which she likes better for sound. She said, " i could care less. Both are fine and the same"
She is talking about men.
And that’s what 90% of a paying audience thinks to lol
Maybe it's time y'all traded her in for a non-deaf wife..
If she could care less, then she cares some what about it. Now, if she had said “I couldn’t care less”, that would have been the correct term.
I’ve got a Fender Frontman 25 R I’d be willing to sell at the right price.
Joe thank you so much for making these videos it’s a lot of people’s only chance to see you and hear you play. Thanks again you should try to play Myrtle Beach sometime so I can see you. Haha. Love your music and you are cooler than you think brother. Peace Al
Have to say….that tone at 8:07 is pretty sweet!
....but more harmonic richness to the Dumble setup
So, the title is misleading really. He seems to be comparing two pedals, not the amps and guitars so much. If the amps are set to clean... well, then how are you comparing them if you only are running overdrive pedals? Better to just compare those 2 pedals into the same amp and guitar like he apparently does around 4:44. Only change ONE VARIABLE or you won't be able to know what is what. When he compares pedals using the same amp and guitar, there's basically not much difference I can hear. But with different amp and guitar, the Fender/Epiphone/Deep State setup is less focused. Bit more woofy. Another thing is the sound is not directly related to how a guitar FEELS in your hands and how easy it plays. Those things are not put forth here because.. you can't. You'd have to actually play one to find out.
Hey at least you get a reverb with the cheaper set up and when you're ready you can always trade your Sidekick up to that Dumble if you can find a bit extra
Check out Mesa Cleo for Klon type sounds. Just enough midrange push for a Fender style amp.
Not an observation of insult, but what's up with the house of reps over shirt, seems like its his go to shirt. All props to Bonomassa whatever he chooses to appear in!
Both unique in their own right and equally useable by players who know their stuff!
Nice video! 👌🏻✌🏻🎶
does anyone else think his hoodie is super funny, regarding he is playing the deep state pedal
Nice tone from both, a little dark for me but hey after 40 + years with my head in amps I dont hear that well lol!
I'm seeing the Fender Sidekick Reverb 25 skyrocketing in values...
when one of the most prolific vintage guitar/amp collectors tells you it ain't the gear , you can take that piece of advice to the bank , i'm really glad joe makes these videos professing the truth about how much high end gear is over rated for it;s intened use , now as a collector's item that is a different story ....
Great comparison, but i guess Joe could also do a showdown between the cheapest crap he could get his hands on and the most expensive. Well, the most expensive, we have just seen here. But you can definitely go cheaper than the Epi / Fender Combo. The point is, whatever Joe uses, it will always sound like Joe Bonamassa. What it takes to get a good sound ? Like he says, it´s the player.
What speakers are in each cab? That's going to be a huge factor in the sound you're getting
Joe should get a Klon for each of the tweeds that he owns.
Should get???? He already has one for each and of course a backup!!!
While there is a small difference, you could probably close the gap by upgrading the speaker in the Fender amp.
