I was in the market for a Dumble-ish amp a few months ago and exchanged a couple of emails with Taylor - he was very responsive to questions and just a great guy to interact with. I ended up getting something used from Reverb, but that interaction really made me a fan of Amplified Nation.
I always thought the prices for Dumbles were crazy! I can't remember who said this, "What if Jim Marshall only made 300 Marshall Amps?" "Just think how much they would be." Makes me look at the prices in a somewhat different light now.

These dumble guys eggs other amp builders can change the feel an tone and do often experiment but Marshall and fender were kinda trying to not change anything else from the RCA tube books and such, they just wanted reliable Brand tone🤷🏻♀️ so .
@@auntjenifer7774 it's way cheaper to mass-manufacture from a huge inventory of all the same type parts, rather than hand picking to adjust for each amp build while throwing away the 30% of resistors etc that are out of spec. Fender's always made a point of frugality & using up every part lying around, regardless if it made the guitar or the particular amp better. The general designs were brilliant, but they (and Marshall) have always been more concerned with getting them out the door & having sales numbers. And Fender and Marshall have always been extremely easy to duplicate & market as 'always the same thing' even if some were less than perfect. I'm beginning to think some of these new "boutique" amplifiers are actually cheap from a price to value perspective. Exact opposite of Fender USA.
I own a wonderland overdrive, an awesome amp with so many dif. sounds, besides that i had an issue with the amp about 5 months in, i emailed taylor, he had me ship it back to him which he paid for and fixed it and sent back , great customer service , thats why you buy from him, issues with amps will always come up but if you buy it from the right company you wont be disappointed! couldnt be happier!
Thank you for this video. I don't know anything about Dumble and never understood what makes them so valuable to amp afficionados, especially when each one is literally unique. They are amazing amps, but I still don't know why they're worth as much as they tend to get sold for (and that was before Dumble passed). I'm glad someone has come along and is trying to replicate the classic Dumble amps of popular artists.
there are a lot of companies that duplicate specific dumbles. fuchs, van wielden, two rock, bludotone, carol ann, etc. ceriatone makes a few different ones, hrm mk1 mk2 , bluesmaster and non hrm.
Alexander Dumble used to sell his amps for your average boutique price 3-4k ( back in the day . Then Some collector scum started selling them for like 20 k, so he had to change his business model. He was being taken advantage of. I would be pretty mad too, TBH.
And I have never played one because I know I can't afford one but I have played Fender Bass m a n and that my friend was a great amp for me playing through a fender Telecaster so good

It’s interesting to hear about the Marshall. From what I’ve read, the goal for Marshall was to originally have a clean amp that competed with the Fender clean tone. The great overdrive tone was just a byproduct of a well built amplifier.
The major differences were caused by the availibility of parts in Europe vs the US. Marshall started trying to make a copy of the fender bassbreakers, but had to make a lot of changes because they couldn't get parts. This required progressively more design shifts until it became something totally unique

Everyone can grasp that England probably does not use or have available every kind of eclectic component exactly like the U.S. does. Components such as like transistors, capacitors, transformers and most importantly tubes. Yes in the beginning substitutes had to be made because of component availability in England. Still from what I understand the Original Marshalls were really close to being Bassmans. Over the years new Marshall amp models were introduced and then the schematics changes. As it stands my Fender Bassman has the same schematic as did my Marshall JTM45. That means there are not a lot of design changes and in truth the schematics are pretty much identical. - Peter age 73
@@PeterDad60 if you’re looking at JTMs and bassman’s, you wont find much of a difference. But don’t undersell the difference in the circuit caused by the tubes alone. I won’t get into it because I don’t feel like going through the math on why that effected downstream component choices so I’ll move on to the other major thing. In the US, higher voltage electrolytic capacitors were far more readily available up to around 600V. This lead Leo to design the bassman to use parallel reservoir banks with summed capacitance vs Marshall having to use series with summed working voltages to replicate how the fender rectifier tube could open and drive current faster at higher loads. Makes a bigger sound difference than you would think. They also tap the negative feedback at difference impedance values, with the JTM being higher
Amplified Nation amps are hands down the best sounding amps I've ever witnessed . Ok they are rather expensive, but they sound incredible , are build like tanks and the custom availability regards coverings and fittings as well as the sound , is superb .
I have a Ceriatone OTS 20, which is a lunchbox take on one of the dumble… its pretty wild how good it sounds and for how much it cost. There is a wait period though. Btw, love the second channel, I found out about it through the podcast.
Phil, I would LOVE to see you break down (based on your best estimates) how many people buy amps at the various price points like: Under $200, $200-$500, $500-$999, 1k-2k, 2k-5k, above 5k. Not among pros but among ALL guitar players. I have to believe that for every serious player who drops more than 2 grand on an amp, there are five players using a Katana or something similar. I totally agree with your take on how spending large amounts of money gets you small improvements the higher up the price range you go. For some players, it's worth it.
had a conversation with amplified nation guy a few years , a knowledgeable, articulate, easy to talk too , class act, I purchased an andy fuchs amp because it sounded great and was available In europe, next time out I buy an amplified nation, I've heard more of these Amps and they are great, Troy T london
I would love to have a boutique amp to use at home where I could appreciate the nuances that can be heard in a sonically sterile environment. In real life, I use a stock Fender Deluxe Reverb or Twin Reverb, and when the bass and drums kick in, I can’t hear or appreciate the difference between my amps and something “Dumbley”. Also, no one has ever accused me of sounding “chewy”. If Bonamassa and Mayer can afford these amps, God bless them. I can’t justify spending the money on one when I can’t hear the difference and the people I play for couldn’t care less. This was an interesting video, though!

I own Ampliphonix and Gain and it’s the best amp I’ve ever heard. I have played two real dumble amps: robben fords and one of bonamassa’s overdrive special combo. Taylor is amazing! I have a sultan in the works. Best amps on planet
I have an Overdrive reverb and it is one of the best amps that I’ve ever owned. I’m considering looking into an ampliphonix and gain. Does it satisfy the Van Halenesque era?

I'm not sure if people know this, but there's other amazing boutique amp builders around the world that don't have fame. I was in a guys shop last week and he had an award winning amp he was showing in his shop that he had built. It had the best harmonic break up I've heard in my life

Very informative! Everyone talks about Dumbles and very few can define it as there seems there is no baseline comparison if they are mostly customized for the player.
The point might be for the extra 10% IF you can get the clear gain where the tones sing without harsh harmonics - is recording .....and if the material your composition and playing and you want the singing gain with beautiful clear harmonics ..and even some complex chords with clear crunch sometimes..that's where the extra 10% comes in - recording . I associate the Dumble Clean like Fender with a bit more body and 'sing ' .And some of the Overdrive where it's almost Fender / Marshall with singing overdrive. Modern Santana has clearer harmonics in his OD - and I noticed that in the Rob Thomas thing - his OD tone has no fuzz at all - in the beginning - Santana had a little fuzz in his tone ...now clearer. So the clean gain of the CAE+ / Carlton / Ford and some of EJ and Bonamassa... The harmonics don't fight with each other - and I do hear that in the Amplified Nation stuff. Overdrive Reverb ...especially ...But I want to listen more to other demos ...I am interested in Recording so you hear everything ...as do the audience for the Music... a tone boost will not make it or break it but it might put it over the Top - IF it's good enough music. I need really clean for some of the chords but love singing OD ..with clear harmonics ...so these are very low noise - a possible BENEFIT of the new components ...I don't think everything was better long ago .
I enjoyed the interview and found it very informative. What would have knocked this out of the ballpark for me would have been to have a short riff played through each to give us an idea of the sound characteristics. I know UA-cam sound won't match what is heard in person, but it would have given some reference point for those who have never heard what is being described with words. Still, very glad to have had this pop up on my recommendations. I subscribed because of it.
Glad you have this second channel. It's more my jam. Admittedly biased though, I'm strictly a tube amp guy. I've tried the modern modelers, and I do see where they can be useful, they're just not for me.
A bit late to this one Phil but it really made me think. I rely on my Katana and was about to buy one or two of those "good amps" you speak of . I think I will save up a little longer and just buy something great and use the katana for the rest.
To me the thing is: you choose gain for an overdrive sound for sustain. A Dumble gives you sustain without that gain. Other than that they're just Fender amps.
He had some really good points, as did Phil!! I always wanted a Trainwreck, could never afford it. Then when Dr. Z came out with the Z-wreck Jr, at the better $$ I wanted one of those, but they were out of stock for a long time. When Sourwater finally got some back in stock, the price was, from the best I can remember, quite a bit more $$!! 8( I can't really afford "them" right now. I have 5-6 small amps. My Egnater Rebel_20 thru the Mojotone 5/4 pine 1X12 w/Celestion Alnico Blue's is as close as I can get for now. I have a cab waiting though, Mojotone did an anniversary (50 year) cab for Celestion, 2X12 with Alnico Creamback's, they owed me a favor (long story) and gave me a great deal on one. It's still waiting..... 8) --gary
Taylor is doing for guitar players with his incredible amps what Lee Scratch Perry did for musicians and music with his Black Ark Recording studio. And all us fans and listeners benefit big!
Dumble never charged THAT much. They were thousands but not even ten grand. Is the second hand rarity that makes them so valuable to people. All his amps sounded different, I played some that were incredibly loud and clean, others for a creamy and distorted, he didn't just have one style or one type of thing. He really wanted to make them for a specific player who played a certain way, but that would often vary project to project.
Yeah and I read he was kinda hard to work with or maybe an ass hole !? I seen a video dumble made on UA-cam, it's like 14 years old but he kinda seemed like an ass hole !?🤷🏻♀️
Ten grand not that much? With a Marshall, Fender or Peavey costing one grand and a Boogie like 2, the mighty Soldano 3 and that Fender-clone amp TEN??!!
I found your comment about modelers vs high end amps and the marginal cost and quality improvement over the actual amp. Makes me think about my choice (I have a helix) Hiwatt DR103 vs a Helix or Fractal Audio FM9 Turbo (when I get the call from them). I want both, LOL.
I bought a Mira a few years ago. The dead stop tailpiece meant I would never be able to INTONATE the thing. Paul who cares so much about each screw that goes into his guitars wouldn't respond to my several letters that implored him to fix the problem. I will never stop making people understand how much PRS doesn't give a crap. Buy an Eastman. The Chinese care.
You briefly mentioned the importance of the clean tone in any amp. In my humble opinion this is absolute bedrock in getting a killer sound. I don't think you can get a fabulous distortion tone unless it's built upon a full frequency clean tone.
I have a Fender '59 Bassman Ltd. and I do not want a reverb unit with it. The all Pine cabinet provides a much superior reverb sound or rather natural resonance. Better than reverb. - Peter age 73
Hasn't someone already taken a Kemper Profiler and sampled a Dumble ? I mean this is the whole idea behind using a profiler. Seems like those that own a Dumble could do this and sell the profile to users that wanted that sound.
I build amps as well. Modeling has come a long way, you can get close enough to a Marshall or a Fender or Vox, modeling has a long way to go to get a believable Dumble tone.
Ideally, yes. We had one of his bigger cabs in our shop for some time. It was all silver-dome JBL speakers. Very bright and only clean. Nobody really had an amp that sounded good with it. It had to have been a custom job for somebody that needed that sound. Somebody finally bought it just to have it as a collectible.
people THINK they want these kind of amps until they play one. They are very..very filtered and are about the furthest thing from "sweet" you can get. lots of preamp gain and over filtering are not necessarily a good thing when you are playing the amp in your room at 2.5 on the dial. Now playing outside to a few hundred people, these amps have their place, the keep their bottom end and can be fully heard in the back row....in a typical home..NOPE. do you like any sweetness in your high end.... well now take an iron bar and hit it with a hammer...THAT"s your high end now- that is the steel string singer experience for this player (never played an Amplified Nation Amp btw- i am talking about dumble style amps in general)
Simple really, more power accelerates mass more quickly. The top speed doesn’t change, but the time it takes to get to the top speed is reduced. Viola…not faster in relation to MPH, but faster when looking at time taken to reach your destination. Now, how that relates to tone in an amplifier is as relative as using the term chewy or airy. So in that respect, each of us will need to experience what he is talking about to wrap our minds around it 😉
I love Dumble tone but to be honest playing by myself or with some friends it is hard to justify dropping $3,500 on an amp head! So are there pedals that do a decent job of simulating that Dumble sound?
Vertex steel string singer for SRV or the ultra-phonix for the Mayer wonderland overdrive sound. You’ll need a good amp with a really nice and dynamic clean channel to start with to get the most out of the pedals.
I have NEVER, and I am beyond my fifities,listened to ANY song and wondered what type of effects loop was being used for the solo. When watching guitar people talk about needing 500 guitars to make a unique sound, I just have to laugh. When the tank is dry on your car, you add gas from the station with the lowest price at that intersection.
He said gooped, but he means POTTED and they were potted to last longer, resistors dont drift in time, you can overload them and have them catch a flame and still hold their value. You can clean the color code off with acetone, not why you pot a circuit. People with degrees in electronics know better
Gooped is more of a slang term it means someone used black epoxy and poured it all over the components or board so no one can see them. Builders have also used paint to do this or scratched off markings that would help someone figure out what they used
@@knowyourgear2320 Yeah, I am aware, I have a degree in electronics and have worked in the field for years, but noone ever called it gooped, I have worked on developing the fishman fluence, building the parts in jackson sustainer pickups on the PC-1, and I was mostly agreeable but trying to actually give a deeper understanding to why dumble may have used actual electronics potting materials, which your average amp builder wouldnt know a thing about.
@@knowyourgear2320 What I meant about resistors was, you can put them in direct stress, catch them on fire, and it takes a lot to make them change values, nothing like a capacitor that changes value in time, in fact an open is the 99% most often way a resistor dies, common knowledge in the electronics repair field
@@knowyourgear2320 Electronics designed potting materials are 2 part epoxy resins with known electrical coefficients, you can get the data tables and match them to parts used. Also there are 3 reasons its used, 1 for better performance, 2 obscure parts from copying, 3 to obscure parts to avoid a cease and desist
The magic of a great amplifier is lost on the majority of guitarists that simply aren't "good" enough to truly appreciate them. You can't be a paint by numbers musician and "get it". There is a certain level of "feel" that accomplished guitarists achieve that is lost on most players. If you don't have that amazing touch with your hands, you'll never appreciate a killer amp. I’ll take “feel” over “technique” any day of the week. My favorite rock players were guys like Tim Renwick, David Gilmour, Adam Levy, Davey Johnstone, Mike Allsup, Jamie Oram-West, Jimi Hendrix, Roy Buchanan…Those willing to play outside the box, creating a sound all their own.
Don't you just hate Dumble? I wouldn't have known Dumble if it wasn't for Eric Johnson's lead tone...which was just my imagination, because it was really a vintage Fuzz Face, whilst using the volume and tone controls on his vintage guitars ... that also were unavailable, and not even that, because Eric had modified his Strat with a DiMarzio ... but not like you could do it, because he had coil-tapped it, so that HS-3 was only half-power ... no, not coil split, that's humbuckers ... which was in reality what Johnson played in the studio ... and it was a Gibson '59 burst Les Paul, a Flying V and an ES 334 - so that magic resonance of his hi-gain sound was really ... a half acoustic Gibson :P But ... use Ray-O-Vac batteries, NOT Duracell!!
I was visiting him once and he was testing celestion 12-in speakers. They were all the same make and model, but he had six pages of notes on. After testing all the ones he had, about a dozen, he went through the notes and selected the perfect one for the amp he was selling. Someone would look at that app and say "oh it has a celestion 30 watt speaker" and then copy that. Sorry, these people are not on his level building clones.

Either one of those amps' EQ pedal and a TS. People who claim they can wouldn't be able to either.

I have played two real dumble amps: robben fords and one of bonamassa’s overdrive special combo.

I have an Overdrive reverb and it is one of the best amps that I’ve ever owned. I’m considering looking into an ampliphonix and gain. Does it satisfy the Van Halenesque era?

I'm not sure if people know this, but there's other amazing boutique amp builders around the world that don't have fame. I was in a guys shop last week and he had an award winning amp he was showing in his shop that he had built. It had the best harmonic break up I've heard in my life

Very informative! Everyone talks about Dumbles and very few can define it as there seems there is no baseline comparison if they are mostly customized for the player.

The point might be for the extra 10% IF you can get the clear gain where the tones sing without harsh harmonics - is recording .....and if the material your composition and playing and you want the singing gain with beautiful clear harmonics ..and even some complex chords with clear crunch sometimes..that's where the extra 10% comes in - recording . I associate the Dumble Clean like Fender with a bit more body and 'sing ' .And some of the Overdrive where it's almost Fender / Marshall with singing overdrive. Modern Santana has clearer harmonics in his OD - and I noticed that in the Rob Thomas thing - his OD tone has no fuzz at all - in the beginning - Santana had a little fuzz in his tone ...now clearer.
So the clean gain of the CAE+ / Carlton / Ford and some of EJ and Bonamassa...
The harmonics don't fight with each other - and I do hear that in the Amplified Nation stuff. Overdrive Reverb ...especially ...But I want to listen more to other demos ...I am interested in Recording so you hear everything ...as do the audience for the Music... a tone boost will not make it or break it but it might put it over the Top - IF it's good enough music. I need really clean for some of the chords but love singing OD ..with clear harmonics ...so these are very low noise - a possible BENEFIT of the new components ...I don't think everything was better long ago .

I enjoyed the interview and found it very informative. What would have knocked this out of the ballpark for me would have been to have a short riff played through each to give us an idea of the sound characteristics. I know UA-cam sound won't match what is heard in person, but it would have given some reference point for those who have never heard what is being described with words. Still, very glad to have had this pop up on my recommendations. I subscribed because of it.

Glad you have this second channel. It's more my jam. Admittedly biased though, I'm strictly a tube amp guy. I've tried the modern modelers, and I do see where they can be useful, they're just not for me.

A bit late to this one Phil but it really made me think. I rely on my Katana and was about to buy one or two of those "good amps" you speak of . I think I will save up a little longer and just buy something great and use the katana for the rest.

To me the thing is: you choose gain for an overdrive sound for sustain. A Dumble gives you sustain without that gain. Other than that they're just Fender amps.

He had some really good points, as did Phil!! I always wanted a Trainwreck, could never afford it. Then when Dr. Z came out with the Z-wreck Jr, at the better $$ I wanted one of those, but they were out of stock for a long time. When Sourwater finally got some back in stock, the price was, from the best I can remember, quite a bit more $$!! 8( I can't really afford "them" right now. I have 5-6 small amps. My Egnater Rebel_20 thru the Mojotone 5/4 pine 1X12 w/Celestion Alnico Blue's is as close as I can get for now. I have a cab waiting though, Mojotone did an anniversary (50 year) cab for Celestion, 2X12 with Alnico Creamback's, they owed me a favor (long story) and gave me a great deal on one. It's still waiting..... 8) --gary

Dumble never charged THAT much. They were thousands but not even ten grand. Is the second hand rarity that makes them so valuable to people. All his amps sounded different, I played some that were incredibly loud and clean, others for a creamy and distorted, he didn't just have one style or one type of thing. He really wanted to make them for a specific player who played a certain way, but that would often vary project to project.
Yeah and I read he was kinda hard to work with or maybe an ass hole !? I seen a video dumble made on UA-cam, it's like 14 years old but he kinda seemed like an ass hole !?🤷🏻♀️
Dumble was charging 35k an hour in the 90's just to talk on the phone with him.

I found your comment about modelers vs high end amps and the marginal cost and quality improvement over the actual amp. Makes me think about my choice (I have a helix) Hiwatt DR103 vs a Helix or Fractal Audio FM9 Turbo (when I get the call from them). I want both, LOL.
was there a Dumble made for a Gibson/Humbucker? most of them that are refrenced were all built for Fenders (or that is my impression)

I bought a Mira a few years ago. The dead stop tailpiece meant I would never be able to INTONATE the thing. Paul who cares so much about each screw that goes into his guitars wouldn't respond to my several letters that implored him to fix the problem. I will never stop making people understand how much PRS doesn't give a crap. Buy an Eastman. The Chinese care.
You briefly mentioned the importance of the clean tone in any amp. In my humble opinion this is absolute bedrock in getting a killer sound. I don't think you can get a fabulous distortion tone unless it's built upon a full frequency clean tone.
I love the dumble sound but unlike fenders I find they don’t take fuzz well.
I have a Fender '59 Bassman Ltd. and I do not want a reverb unit with it. The all Pine cabinet provides a much superior reverb sound or rather natural resonance. Better than reverb.

Hasn't someone already taken a Kemper Profiler and sampled a Dumble ? I mean this is the whole idea behind using a profiler. Seems like those that own a Dumble could do this and sell the profile to users that wanted that sound.
Seems like a nice amp for the professional who doesn't blink dropping 3,400 on a amp.
I build amps as well. Modeling has come a long way, you can get close enough to a Marshall or a Fender or Vox, modeling has a long way to go to get a believable Dumble tone.
As a weekend warrior, I don’t know anybody that would drop 3500 bucks for an amplifier. And if I did, I better make sure my wife never sees it.

Ideally, yes. We had one of his bigger cabs in our shop for some time. It was all silver-dome JBL speakers. Very bright and only clean. Nobody really had an amp that sounded good with it. It had to have been a custom job for somebody that needed that sound. Somebody finally bought it just to have it as a collectible.
people THINK they want these kind of amps until they play one. They are very..very filtered and are about the furthest thing from "sweet" you can get. lots of preamp gain and over filtering are not necessarily a good thing when you are playing the amp in your room at 2.5 on the dial. Now playing outside to a few hundred people, these amps have their place, the keep their bottom end and can be fully heard in the back row....in a typical home..NOPE. do you like any sweetness in your high end.... well now take an iron bar and hit it with a hammer...THAT"s your high end now- that is the steel string singer experience for this player (never played an Amplified Nation Amp btw- i am talking about dumble style amps in general)

Simple really, more power accelerates mass more quickly. The top speed doesn’t change, but the time it takes to get to the top speed is reduced. Viola…not faster in relation to MPH, but faster when looking at time taken to reach your destination.
Now, how that relates to tone in an amplifier is as relative as using the term chewy or airy. So in that respect, each of us will need to experience what he is talking about to wrap our minds around it 😉
I love Dumble tone but to be honest playing by myself or with some friends it is hard to justify dropping $3,500 on an amp head! So are there pedals that do a decent job of simulating that Dumble sound?
Vertex steel string singer for SRV or the ultra-phonix for the Mayer wonderland overdrive sound.
You’ll need a good amp with a really nice and dynamic clean channel to start with to get the most out of the pedals.

I have NEVER, and I am beyond my fifities,listened to ANY song and wondered what type of effects loop was being used for the solo. When watching guitar people talk about needing 500 guitars to make a unique sound, I just have to laugh. When the tank is dry on your car, you add gas from the station with the lowest price at that intersection.
Need a real amp. Oh well too bad I’m broke. Maybe joyo will make a dumble sound pedal lol
He said gooped, but he means POTTED and they were potted to last longer, resistors dont drift in time, you can overload them and have them catch a flame and still hold their value. You can clean the color code off with acetone, not why you pot a circuit. People with degrees in electronics know better
USING POTTING MATERIAL CHANGES HOW THE VOLTAGE FLOWS, its PART of the sound!
Gooped is more of a slang term it means someone used black epoxy and poured it all over the components or board so no one can see them. Builders have also used paint to do this or scratched off markings that would help someone figure out what they used
@@knowyourgear2320 Yeah, I am aware, I have a degree in electronics and have worked in the field for years, but noone ever called it gooped, I have worked on developing the fishman fluence, building the parts in jackson sustainer pickups on the PC-1, and I was mostly agreeable but trying to actually give a deeper understanding to why dumble may have used actual electronics potting materials, which your average amp builder wouldnt know a thing about.
@@knowyourgear2320 What I meant about resistors was, you can put them in direct stress, catch them on fire, and it takes a lot to make them change values, nothing like a capacitor that changes value in time, in fact an open is the 99% most often way a resistor dies, common knowledge in the electronics repair field
@@knowyourgear2320 Electronics designed potting materials are 2 part epoxy resins with known electrical coefficients, you can get the data tables and match them to parts used. Also there are 3 reasons its used, 1 for better performance, 2 obscure parts from copying, 3 to obscure parts to avoid a cease and desist

The magic of a great amplifier is lost on the majority of guitarists that simply aren't "good" enough to truly appreciate them. You can't be a paint by numbers musician and "get it". There is a certain level of "feel" that accomplished guitarists achieve that is lost on most players. If you don't have that amazing touch with your hands, you'll never appreciate a killer amp.

I’ll take “feel” over “technique” any day of the week. My favorite rock players were guys like Tim Renwick, David Gilmour, Adam Levy, Davey Johnstone, Mike Allsup, Jamie Oram-West, Jimi Hendrix, Roy Buchanan…Those willing to play outside the box, creating a sound all their own.

Don't you just hate Dumble? I wouldn't have known Dumble if it wasn't for Eric Johnson's lead tone...which was just my imagination, because it was really a vintage Fuzz Face, whilst using the volume and tone controls on his vintage guitars ... that also were unavailable, and not even that, because Eric had modified his Strat with a DiMarzio ... but not like you could do it, because he had coil-tapped it, so that HS-3 was only half-power ... no, not coil split, that's humbuckers ... which was in reality what Johnson played in the studio ... and it was a Gibson '59 burst Les Paul, a Flying V and an ES 334 - so that magic resonance of his hi-gain sound was really ... a half acoustic Gibson :P But ... use Ray-O-Vac batteries, NOT Duracell!!
This video would be SO MUCH BETTER with actual Dumble sound-files.....

HAD was mighty. His understanding of the relationship between electronic circuits, music and brainwaves resulted in a cottage industry. RIP.
I was visiting him once and he was testing celestion 12-in speakers. They were all the same make and model, but he had six pages of notes on. After testing all the ones he had, about a dozen, he went through the notes and selected the perfect one for the amp he was selling. Someone would look at that app and say "oh it has a celestion 30 watt speaker" and then copy that. Sorry, these people are not on his level building clones.
@@briankehew579 Having gear specific on that level isn't practical for the average musician. What do you do when it breaks? I'm not gonna go making notes on a dozen more speakers, I'm dropping a new one in and hoping for the best
