    Even more effective to actually lock your bike to a rock-solid object. Use two locks concurrently - Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit D-lock, and Kryptonite Evolution chain lock. If you aren't gone very long, no thief can angle grind both of those without drawing too much attention before your return.

    If you don't mind the extra bulk, also use a bike cover, they're inexpensive and a very effective deterrent. Cost $15-20 US.

    You ALWAYS lock your rear wheel. It is where your cassette is located and is the second most expensive part of the bike. The only way it isn't is if you have a special locking spindle. And if you do, then locking the wheel is a bonus, but less necessary. Even then, the way you locked it, a thief can easily pick it up and walk away with it. If they have a truck, van, etc. then it is gone.
    That elevator is NOT too small. You can easily pull the bike up into a wheelie (i.e. vertically) and it takes up about the same amount of space as 1-2 people. Easy.
    However, I think the other points you have made are great. I lost two bikes learning what you've shown. Thanks for sharing!

    Thank you sir, you convinced me to upgrade my u-lock to "orange" Kryptonite. I was using a cheap u-lock, as my bicycle is a cheap, old city bike. But still I like it a lot and would be really pissed off if I had it stolen without doing my best to protect it. For a long time I thought it makes no sense to steal such bikes but it happens more and more ofthen that these bicycles are stolen, not only 'professional' bicycles.

    I just bought an E-Fat Bike as an experienced rider besides the triangle, cables for other components and parking in a highly visible area with lot's of food traffic.
    I opt for multiple locks I have the extended New U going though the wheel and the frame that holds the wheel, A cable to secure the front wheel and my Evo 4 around the wheel and frame.
    I couldn't get my keeper chain around it however I may get use it to lock my wheel to another post since I have an AWD Ebike.
    The more locks and the harder each one is to get through the harder it will be for a thief to steal my bike. When I go to school for Carpentry I'll even bring the battery inside with me so it's just that much more inconvenient to steal! My bike will be over 100lbs still!

    Exactly what I bought, thanks. A Kryptonite "D-lock" with looped cable for the front wheel. I bought another cable for the rear. I think it is a matter of a thief reviewing how long it may take to make off with the bike, and how much noise he may make. At home there's nothing to lock to in my shed but a large ladder. I hope it may cause too much noise to knock off the door lock, find no seat to sit on, then cut the cables. My brother had a Harley-Davidson motorbike stolen from his back yard.

    I would say the chance of your bike being stolen is determined by the relationship between (an effort to steal it), (price of the bike), (risk of getting attention or caught), (ease to sell). The former, the more important variable they are.

    Plus, looking at the bikes, if you park derailleur out, you're closer to the rail and have better chances to lock up the frame and tire...depending on one's bike configuration. Another thing? Looking at where you locked your bike, if I had the choice, I'd have tried to lock around the wider fence post, instead of the thinner rail. js I do like the idea of stashing the pedal within the U lock span!

    I use a portable electric fence used for bear protection around your camesite. I cut it down, and it only requires a lithium 12v battery to operate. if someone messes with it, it will short out the wire that is in the saddle. It will shock their balls if they try to ride away without turning it off, cannot be turned off without a key.

    Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit mini, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can TEXT you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything can happen, time is the most critical factor.

  • @derekjolly3680

    I've never seen that much railing anyplace I've lived where it amounts to that much locking space for bikes, even long ways in. At most we'll have one averagely configured bike rack by a store and you couldn't reasonably lock sideways because it would remove too many potential spots from others. One thing, there are some very good and beefy chain locks out there in the same security category as the better Kryptonite U-locks like the Orange Evolution series. I have one. It's 10mm link size, and they can't bust through them with large bolt cutters either. They are heavier by a couple of pounds though.

    D- locks are more secure if the shackle locks on both ends, as he said you need an angle grinder to cut them open (but not in 2 minutes, more like 30 seconds per cut) and not your average bike thief carries one of those, but lets assume they all do: on a D-lock that only locks from one end (like the one he uses) you need to make just one cut and the side of the shackle that is not locked to the locking lock just falls off and the bike is free; on the other hand on a D-lock that locks on both ends of the shackle you need to make two cuts to free the bike from it, doubling the time the thief will need to take your bike. As this kind of locks have a bent outwards end they´re easy to recognize and thieves with angle grinders go for them first.

    Moreover, don't ever let your bike get out of your hands even if you are standing there. Here is a true story. I was at the gas station filling the air in my tires (this was before I owned a floor pump and I would only use my frame pump on emergencies because it was a PITA to put just 10lbs in let alone 35!). At the time I had a $900 bike, which for would be about $1500 today. It wasn't super top of the line, but was the best bicycle I had ever owned at the time. Well this rough looking fellow rode up on a BMX bike. He was about 35, dirty, with stringy blonde hair if that gives you any idea of the type we are dealing with here. As I was filling my tires I had a good grip on the frame the entire time and I could see him looking at my bike out of the corner of my eye. When I was finished with the air hose I let it go (I wasn't about to get close enough to him to hand it to him). At that point he made a remark about my bike and gave me a compliment. I said thank you and started walking away. He was next to me asking me if I know how to check the frame for cracks. I told him sure (I was trying to just get rid of him). To which point he started to explain (and demonstrate on his own bike) that you have to stand on the pedal while holding the bars with your other hand (I knew it was complete bullshit, but I played along). Then he asked me if I want him to check my bike out. That was when I went from yellow alert to red alert. I mounted at that point and just took off - leaving him in the proverbial dust. I'm convinced that had I taken my hands off that bike for a minute and let him have it he would have been gone. I don't think I was going to be able to catch him on the BMX bike that he would have left behind (which was a cheap Walmart bike).

    Location definitely doesn't matter, and don't count on CCTV. I locked my bike up on bike rails installed right in front of a station in London. It had 3 CCTVs a just 4 meters away, so it looked perfect. Didn't matter, someone took an angle grinder to my D lock and the cable just fell out too. Called the police, but it turns out none of the 3 cameras were pointed at the bike rails, even though they were just a meter or two away from the entrance of the station. The thief kindly left a small part of the Kryptonite lock so I could claim insurance that comes with the lock, buuuut guess who didn't bother registering? Always assume the worst, mark your bike, register it, take pictures if you ever change any components, record the frame number, and ideally all of the components so you can describe it perfectly if police are lucky enough to retrieve it, and get insurance.

      Best thing that can stop thieves are people. They need to act, speak up, confront them and other people with police and justice system should support them.
      Sadly right now, we are seeing other approach - leave everyone, shut up, mind you own business and keep walking.
      If I saw someone cutting chain with angle grinder, they would have to wait for police, beat me or give very good explanation even if it was real owner.

    Get a U-lock that is at least 18mm thick like the Kryptonite fahgettaboudit, this lock cannot be removed with a bolt cutter, but the other most important thing is an alarm that can text you when the bike is disturbed so that you can get to it before anything happens, time is the most critical

      I agree but it also depends on how the lock is placed on the bike and if you have to cut it more than two places. A strong D-lock in a tight space properly attached is a much more difficult to go thru than one that’s just hanging loosely on the top bar.

    • @CyclingHabit
      @CyclingHabit  5 років тому +1

      Chains are heavier and less convenient, although give you more options what a bike can be locked to. However, the time it takes to cut a chain or a d lock with an angle grinder is similar.

    • @carlosbarreto4695
      @carlosbarreto4695 5 років тому +2

      @@CyclingHabit Besides giving you more options and flexibility to lock your bike, I also heard that D and U locks are easier to hold still while using the angle grinder, while the chain will move around and will be harder to hold still.

    Also, if you have disc brakes, put a decent padlock or 2 around the disc rotar’s, along with 2 D locks on the frame if you have 2 but 1 is ok. With the padlocks on the discs it can’t be ridden away easy either. Just adds extra security and takes more time an hassle for a bike thief. The more locks the better IMO

    • @CyclingHabit
      @CyclingHabit  6 років тому +1

      High chance of bending the rotors, also it is not recommended to touch your rotors with hands as you might contaminate the rotors. Also very inconvenient ant time consuming. Lots of extra weight. This advice is good for motorcycles, not bicycles

    1) Masterlock streetcuffs 8200 -and/or- 8290 9-link
    Frame to pole.
    2) Kryptonite fahgettaboudit u-lock. Securing drive-side crank arm thru both chainstays. &

    The main problem with D Locks is they can be lethal or cause you serious injuries. Carrying the lock in a back pack or anywhere around the body is dangerous in the event of a accident. Landing on a D Lock will break bones and cause massive internal damage.
    Always use the frame carrier supplied. Problem is it looks rubbish and the fixing brackets aren’t good for carbon fibre bikes.
    I use a motorcycle chain which is still dangerous when carried but less so than the D lock.
    So broken back when you fall off or broken bank account when it’s stolen....... you can’t win either way.

    Your right about a good hardened steel d lock ,but maybe a bit too optimistic considering a portable angle grinder with a thin kerf profile ,will make short work of ANY D lock.
    One thing that wasn't mentioned was , appearance.
    Bikes with fancy paint jobs will get the attention of a thief before an old beater bike.
    If i had your job and was under constant threat of having my bike stolen, i would strip all decals off and paint it with a dull grey primer. keep the gears oiled and the brakes clean , but avoid washing your bike . It won't rust because nearly all newer model bikes are either aluminum or carbon fiber , so it can be scratched and nasty looking . MOST thieves won't give a second look . Only a super professional thief will see what's behind all that grime.

    06:39 So I was given one of these deceptively flimsy locks with a "bike buyback program" from Cicli Sergio Bianchi in Florence. You buy a simple bike for about 150 euro, they buy it back for 75 euro at the end of your vacation. I locked it on the 3rd day near a church to listen to the choir, and came out to find the lock cut (seeing how shitty the construction is ... just thin aluminum case with a thin cable inside!) and the bike gone. I showed the cut lock to Cicli Sergio Bianchi, and they shrugged and said, "Next time buy chain!" Well, why did they give me this piece of shit lock in the first place? I think it's a SCAM where they sell the bikes, then someone goes around and cuts these locks to steal them back. Happy ending: My travel insurance covered the full 150 euros, so free bike for a few days.
