2 months ago my Lectric xp lite got stolen. I used the lock from Lectric and it was a huge mistake. Since then I’ve invested a lot of money in Kryptonite locks. I don’t leave my bike alone in high risk areas and no longer than 5 minutes.

In certain areas, unless you hire an armed guard, it will be stolen if you leave it out long enough. No one will stop any thief, cameras are not an issue. Get the best lock you can and don't leave it out too long.

The thing I see, is you don’t have the lock attached to more than one of the bike rack and your cable chain is loose. With the cable chain not pulled tightly, it can easily be pulled out and bolt cutters or a grinder will make short work of the cable. Then they ride off with your bike lock around the frame and cut it off later. Your wheels should be secured with a pinheaded locking skewer in place of the quick release on your wheels and seat post. That prevents someone loosening the quick release on the wheels and post and stealing them. Additionally, you can have a lock on your calipers with an alarm. This immobilizes the wheels from turning, so they will have to lift the entire bike with an alarm going off on both tires. I notice you didn’t remove the battery as well.

Another good way is to use a U lock that goes around the bike frame and thru the rear wheel spoke or spokes to the other side and thru the frame again.

Agree. I have a video that talks how my bike got stolen and then did some research on lock options. Couple of locks that I discussed also have alarm feature built in so that is definitely a plus. However, all this is predicated on people willing to stop thieves when they see something out of whack. Ultimately, there is no way to protect a bike. Even when locked up correctly, you can come back and find the bike stripped. Frequently, especially downtown, the druggies have done so much collateral damage, the rest of the bike is a write-off.

I had an accident and had to be taken to hospital, the police said don't worry we'll lock up your bike.
They made the classic mistake of putting the d-lock around the forks and through the wheel.
Thieves only had to loosen the front wheel and lift the bike from the wheel 😩
Then all they had to do was cut several spokes and they have the front wheel too 😥
At least I still had a lock when I left hospital 😒
Never trust the police to secure your bike, they haven't got a clue 😤

As you have proven your ULOCK can fit around the ***oversized*** down tube
    - I would move down across/through chainstay ***locking a crank arm*** (even if stolen they can't pedal = rolling backwards secures tighter grip)
    ____
With kryptonite - disc ULOCK, easier to carry - you can do the same crankarm to chainstay (then 2nd lock, chain as wanted)

It should be obvious to you to remove the pedals & take the battery with you when you lock your Lectric bike.
After doing so, all you have left is a kind of heavy, regular bike with no pedals.
Isn't the entire idea to make YOUR bike a less attractive target? The quick-release pedals is one of the main features of this bike that have it on my short list.

  • @InimitaPaul

Even if you lock your bike to the bike rack they’ll just cut the rack, it’s much quicker and easier than attacking the lock. If I can’t lock mine to a piece of metal thicker than a grinder wheel I’m not leaving it there, I have a Hiplock DX1000 (wheel to frame) and an Abus chain and insurance lock from my motorbike (frame to solid pole) and I still wouldn’t leave my Vado 5.0 IGH alone for long.

    • @tai.randomthings
      @tai.randomthings  6 місяців тому +2

I totally agree. I take my bike into the public bathroom with me. I want to try a Hiplock, that may be my next purchase. One thing I noticed was they are quite small, do that have a bigger version that can lock over large tubular steel?

    • @InimitaPaul
      @InimitaPaul 6 місяців тому +1

@@tai.randomthings It’s one size fits all I’m afraid, they’re not tiny but they’re really made to go through motorbike wheels to stop them being wheeled off but they market them for e-bikes for extra sales. The problem with bicycles is they’re easy to pick up and walk off with so a chain/hiplock combo is essential, I have an e-bike and a motorbike so the double purchase makes sense for me. If I only had an e-bike I’d go with a hefty chain as it provides more options, they weigh a tonne but with an e-bike you don’t really notice.

The best way is :dont! Have somebody stay with your bike while you go do your aron, if you have to be there for a long time, dont put your bike there, walk, take the bus, drive but do not leave your bike unatended, you have a very good chance of regretting it! Bike theft is on the rise, keep yours, dont leave unatended even with the best lock money can buy, they will steal it anyway! My 2 cents, but I still have my bike and I follow this advice!

I agree that is the only virtually fool proof way but part of me is sad that I cannot ride with my kids to the pier and enjoy lunch or ice cream and I need to push my bikes with me on the crowded strand. So I refuse to let those A$$(&# ruin my lifestyle and I take my chances and hope the thieves go after easier victims.

So you sleep with your bike?
Take it in the shower with you?
Bring it into the movie theater?
Swim in the ocean with it?
Drag it down the aisle of the airplane?
(I could go on and on...)
EVERY SINGLE BIKE is left alone for the vast majority of its life. Your advice is laughably wrong.
Been fighting bike theft for over 40 years now and in that time I've had NONE of my family's 20 bikes stolen.
Today, a Hiplok or Litelok is REQUIRED. Don't waste your money on anything NOT grinder resistant.
But take extra steps to secure your bike. Use the best lock(s). Use GPS trackers. Use video surveillance. Use alarms. Beef up your garage security. Secure your components. There are virtually free ways to do it if you use your brain.
Stay a step or two ahead of the thieves and you most likely won't lose your bike(s).
Make your bike the HARDEST target; thieves are lazy scumbags, they'll go after the easier targets.
And then there's always insurance if you do become that victim.
But the "I never leave my bike alone!" method is a joke.
