Don't Buy An Aston Martin DBS - Why The Vanquish is Better (Review)

  • I love the Aston Martin DBS. Not the new one, the old one. Just recently a few UA-camrs have picked one up, and they have been raving about them as both cars and investments - but I think for the money, there is something much better.

I think the problem with modern engines is that they sound great when given "the Beans" but we don't/ cannot drive like that all the time so they end up sounding like a "toot" (being polite) in a dustbin; especially Ferraris.

James...as the owner of both an old Vanquish and a DBS...despite the shitty interior and quality issues, there are 3 things that make the Vanq special.
One: it's the last hand built Aston. It is, in essence, not the first modern Aston, but the last classic one.
Two: it's the only Aston Flagship that isn't a tarted up lesser car, but actually a unique platform.
Three...its just achingly gorgeous. Motor Trend voted it the 9th most attractive car ever made, and there's a reason that Callum chose to modernise it as his first self-named car-he thinks its the prettiest car he's ever made.

Is the interior also the best looking in the world? I feel like when people comment on the VH Astons, they don’t bother looking inside of the car. Aston Martin’s interior during this era is a complete misstep and is something that a Bentley, Rolls Royce, Porsche etc. would never even be caught dead doing. It’s two different experiences from looking on the outside and being inside the cabin.

Quality wise, sure, the Conti GT is eons apart, and a RR is just a different universe altogether, however Aston's interior is just so effortlessly flush that I simply cannot help but adore it.
The newer models are shit though, the DB11/DBS are both worse looking cars than the new shape Conti GT, and their interiors are both uglier and far worse in terms of quality. Honestly anybody who bought a DB11 after the Conti GT was released was an utter idiot.

However i desire a DBS manual in black because i love Casion Royale. But in all honesty i probably would try to find and get a manual 08/09 DBS in black, maybe pay a bit too much for it and then after 2-5 years of a lovely relation, sell it for a Vanquish (either a 2014, maybe swap the Vanquish S exausht on it, or get a Vanquish S). MY concern with automatics with so many additional gears, IE 6,8,10, is the repair costs associated with them, when they fail, and as they are additionally complicated, I suspect that would be often. The 3 speed, in Fords large Australian cars, very rarely had a failure, whereas the 4 plus gearboxes gained a notoriety for failures.

Still something about the looks of the original Vanquish penned by Ian Callum that I prefer. Just gloss over the fact it was, unfortunately, in Die Another Day which wasn’t Bond’s best moment (to put it politely).

I live in the Cotswolds and drive to Tetbury and Cirencester twice every day on the school run where every other car of note is either a Land Rover, an Aston or a Porsche. Waitrose last week had 18 LR's in it 4 Astons and yes we counted them for giggles - Trouble is I can never tell which Aston I am looking at - they really have Bland not Brand as far as standing out is concerned. With all that said if you were on a mission to own a 6.0 Litre V12 which wasn't a TWR XJS the Vanquish must be the one surely? Just reminded - a guy from Forge Motorsport which were based in Staverton GLos took me out for a 'spin' in his absolutely astonishingly ridiculous missile propelled Sapphire Cosworth which bore the No Reg plate VANISH - I saw him some years later and he had sold the reg plate but kept the car. Smart thinking? I saw it recently on a Van - which sold cleaning products!!!!!! - Opportunity missed.

I've had a Vanquish S & DB9.2 (510bhp), I'll be really honest, £ for £ the DB9 is better value &, as the engine is exactly the same as the Vanquish, an ECU tweak takes the car to 565bhp. It also has the same carbon ceramic brakes & adaptive dampers. The 8-speed ZF has too many cogs & the 6-speed, whilst a little slower to respond, it's important to remember it's a GT car so speed of changes is irrelevant really. The differences in styling are subjective, but the prices aren't, approx £15 - 20k (pre-owned) between the 2 cars makes the DB9.2 a compelling purchase!

Nah. The 8-speed ZF is THE perfect match. It's a grand tourer after all. And that ZF auto is about around the best auto 'box out there. Manual on a Vantage is perfect, but Vanquish/DBS/DB11 pares better with auto.

    • @qbranch2405
      @qbranch2405 3 роки тому

@@AntoniusTyas GT cars are supposed to be sporting. To me, that means more engaging. A torque converter auto isn't engaging. It's lazy, especially on downshifts, even on the Vanquish S. It's a bit better on the new Vantages and DBS Superleggera, but there are times when it just doesn't want to cooperate. If you just want to do motorway cruising, an auto box is fine. For twisty backroads and country lanes, I'll take the manual any day.

JayEmm your a good talker just don’t over do it.However what was your camera man on.Every time you put your foot to the floor in the Aston Martin Vanquish, the camera man kindly treated us to a close up of the front fender, exhaust,or the front windscreen.More external shots of the Vanquish tearing up public roads,or a race track would be nice.I can’t believe I’m saying this, but also if you edited the overall video just ever so slightly,I think that would blow be nice. And just a little less chat.

  • @qbranch2405

The Vanquish (2013+) is beautiful, possibly even more so than the DBS (strictly a matter of taste, of course). It's also more powerful, has an updated (but still outdated) infotainment system. It was designed to be the replacement for the DBS, so it *should* be better, at least in some ways. I think it is, but to me the Vanquish is just too close to the modern Astons in that it isolates you a bit too much from driving. No manual gearbox, less road feel. Useless back seats instead of cargo space (2+0 option on the DBS). The V12 Vantage is too stubby and small. I've driven all three, and to me, the DBS is just right. It's the last of the Aston analog GT cars. That's why I bought one. If you want something a bit newer, softer, less expensive, and less engaging, the Vanquish is for you.
