The right car I’m jealous
10:07 “If he told me the sky was blue, I’d take it with a pinch of salt” - sky in the background turns pink briefly. Like it! 😎
I'm glad somebody noticed :)
Yes, a good check the audience isn't multitasking.
Very cool!
I noticed that too - nice touch 👍
@@JayEmmOnCarshardly miss the Barbie touch... 😂
The amazing aspect of this video isn’t the car…I mean a DBS is brilliant by any standard…but your storytelling James is absolutely engaging. It isn’t pretentious just really honest and sincere.
Thanks very much, that's high praise!
He’s a great orator, very engaging 🙌🏻
The production quality of that intro absolutely blows all car videos out of the water. Aston Martin should be paying you to release that.
Ha, little chance of that they don't even answer my emails
@@JayEmmOnCars Maybe they will after a little more DBS content.
@@JayEmmOnCars emm isn't that can be sorted which the power of your viewers, email flooding Aston Martin?
Ha, if only it were that easy
Love the nice little touch of the sky changing colour as you were pointing out that you wouldn't believe a car dealer if they told you the sky is blue. 😂
And yet he bought the car anyway 🤦♂️
Noticed that. Sky was pink
Yes the 90% miserable cold gloom with a slithering of light 😢
Love the subtle edit at 10:05.
All that film school education paying off at last
It sounds like this car has quite a story. The random little damage and niggles makes me wonder if it’s been part of a “hire a supercar” companies (not sure if Car Vertical picks that up as “Use as a taxi”) and it’s been a little bit abused by folk renting it.
We’ve all been there when a car gets under the skin and grabs hold of the heart strings. The “oh my god, this car is MINE” moment are truly special.
Nowhere near enough miles for that, and the condition is too good
Thought the same when he mentioned various damage in peculiar places
Henry Cavill had a DBS, didn't he? Maybe it was the former Superman's car, not knowing his own strength.... :-D
The wrap is definitely quite odd. As Jay points out, the mileage is quite low - but I wonder if it's been used as a track day hire car for a bit - might explain the failed diff and transmission - and they often don't do huge mileage like a straight up hire road car does.
Well, you’ve made a compelling argument for not buying any car with knob orange wrap…. Tesco car park drifting on stone cold engines R Us no doubt 🧐
About 4 min for the Ferrari reference, good man
I'm slacking
@@JayEmmOnCars just need a 4th one to fix the ratio
Well as evidenced in the video I tried to make it four!
@@JayEmmOnCars what was the fourth? Another FF/Lusso?
FFS...? 😊
Loved it James, from the cracking shirt to the opening music. Your ability to bring a story to life in an entertaining way is why I remained fixated to the screen for the full length. The car looks great and I suspect would be amazing with a detail - I think a UA-camr called Jim White who is based in Lincoln could enable an excellent collaboration opportunity? I have no affinity with Jim but he is legendary in the detailing world for what he can do. Cheers, Kevin
I shall look into him - thanks for watching Kevin :)
@WhiteDetails James, as Kevin pointed out already👍
Thanks for reminding me about the WhiteDetails channel. I used to watch all of his videos, but they dropped off the recommendations a while ago. I just checked again and watched his work on the classic Aston Martin DB2-4. He’s an absolute perfectionist!
He's treating us like we're his friends, I like that, he's genuine.
What a gorgeous machine. When they first came out I thought it looked like a DB9 with a bodykit yet it seems to have aged very gracefully indeed. The lovely thing about your channel is whether it turns out to be a bargain or a bit of a wallet challenger we will lap up the content with a smile and a sense of gratitude that the story of ownership of these fine vehicles is no longer behind a secretive paywall that many of us would struggle to get behind. Have fun good sir!
Those original film shots with the low sun were wonderful, deserved of any praises
A cheap DBS would've been a great buy for a restoration channel like M539, but it might just bankrupt Jay Emm... I can't wait to watch the follow up videos! (until the inevitable "Why I sold my dream Aston" video next year)
Aren’t you thinking of DB7 era Vanquishes? I never read anything about unreliable DBS’. The engine is “bullet proof” if well maintained.
Yeah the DB7 or a Vanquish 1 would be a far riskier buy
It would be a lot of fun to watch James try to figure out how to pull the engine or the transaxle out of the DBS for the kind of work that Sreten from M539 Restorations does but I get the feeling he isn't very keen on learning these things nor does the have the facilities to try. :D
Keen to learn, yes.
Confident in my abilities, no.
😍😍 After the DB9 it's the King choice. Just change the black wheels 😉 Hope that the dif is OK.
Agreed the car definitely needs silver wheels.
@@richardw1992 why
Supercars (and British ultra luxury cars) are rubbish!
When I get money, LC500 here I come.
@@sicebim1 LC500 is a supercar😂. Lexus V8 sounds great & LC500 looks amazing. Too much depreciation nevertheless...
@@TheOrangeEliseCup250 well of course it's not super car but a sports car/GT.
Love an Aston, but glad to hear you’ll be restoring the brightwork (and hopefully the wheels). That blackout stuff is sacrilege!
I'd say keep the DBS, turn it into a restoration project much like the Celica. Or if you want to do improvements, team up with Richard and Bamford Rose, and you'll have a good V12 stablemate for the 550. Not that the F12 was bad, but there's something about DBS that makes it so special. Dunno if it's the ties with Casino Royale or whatever.
Also if you restore this DBS please remove the black detailings and turn it back to the elegant silver, like those window surrounds and side strakes.
There are many plans in motion
@@JayEmmOnCars please give it a full repaint, ideally in Racing Green.
Best of luck with the car. I’d advise ppf on the nose cone including front splitters.
@@landhopper4296 PPF is a scam. It's ridiculously expensive to do and it often doesn't work anyway. James has mentioned this before.
Well however I’m considering to get one…. In the worst case we would be two mad men….
My favourite part of this video is where at 10:10, Jay says “If he’d told me the sky was blue, I’d take it with a pinch of salt” at the exact same time he changes the colour of the sky from blue to pink for a brief moment, lol.
Loved listening to your explanation of how you came to purchase the DBS and the worries and frustrations, Great choice, I hope all goes well with the Inspection, looking forward to the next video. Good Luck .
You may have just made the most interesting purchase video in a long, long time. A sense of realism and humanity. Congratulations and keep up the good work.
That opening scene was epic. So well shot!
What the heart wants the heart gets
And it MUST be 'True Love'! because I just don't understand why he feels the DB9 has 'aged poorly', while this VERY SIMILAR looking DBS is somehow still a 'masterpiece'? So the only explanation is that, for some reason, he has some purely emotional infatuation with the DBS. So it must be love. :)
James, what a lovely video! I‘m so happy for you! I am convinced you‘ll have the time of your life with this beauty!
I own a 2012 DBS Volante and believe me, putting in the start engine key and hearing the V12 come to life is always gorgeous and never gets old! Wish you all the best and a happy drive! 😊
If this makes you mad, then sign me up
If that makes him mad, lock me up!
James, I really do have to applaud you for this one! The level of sarcasm, quips, and subtle humour had me laughing all the way. Now when you consider you stood next to your newly acquired DBS for the most part, that really does speak volumes about your level of journalistic talent, it had me pinned right to the end. Fantastic actually, up there with your best and you didn’t even move 😂😂😂. Fabulous.
Fantastic 👏 I cannot wait to see how the post purchase inspection with Bamford Rose goes! 🙈😅
As he’s clearly gone out to buy the DBS with the most red flags possible, I imagine they’ll confirm what we’re all thinking 🤦♂️
@@tris7 indeed. I looked at getting one but I couldn’t stomach £20k for disk and pads all round.
Hey up J. Just wanted to say how much I love your channel. It really is a joy to see a man follow his passion like you do and I find it incredibly infectious. Keep up the great work.
And I also now need a DBS!
I've wanted one for so long! Hard to believe I have it. I hope you get your chance too
I much prefer this new opening music! I hope you stick with it. As for the new Aston, it’s nice but I prefer the cleaner more elegant look of the previous DB9.
Best Vid you done! Enjoy the car. A car is to be driven. I love driving my Old man XKR!
I too love my old guy XK8, its on its orig diff! LOL
Ahhh of course I have to be on the train with no headphones when you release this! Congratulations James!
The best kind of mad. Great to see the answer to the Aston question ended in a DBS! Superb, hope the inspection goes well 👍
Your view on buying old hero cars is reassuring, a list of ‘imperfections’ is all part of the fun
WoW Bro...live the intro! Great show!
So good! Loving the Aston content and looking forward to the next video with this DBS!
Love it as always, but I have to ask - where did the funk go?😉
2 points, James.
1) What a superb car. I really, really hope it works out well for you. I will enjoy your journey with it.
2) Selling your cars to viewers once you've finished with them is an excellent idea. You've developed a "trusted brand", and buying from you is far, far less risky than buying from most used car dealers.
Mmmmmm. That opening. Beautiful and haunting. Absolutely loved it.
I love your car purchasing stories and this was a great one. Thank you for sharing. I'm so glad you got your dream Aston. The car looks and sounds amazing.
Are you mad? We're all mad here.
The name's Emm. JayEmm.
Goodness me that DBS has a nice noisemaker.
Great video and story, quite a brave purchase, look forward to hearing about the inspection !
A few comments on here regarding changing cars so frequently. My take on this is as follows: I have a utility car (Subaru Forester) and a utility motorcycle (Honda NC750X). Every other vehicle I buy I do so knowing for certain I am but a temporary keeper of whatever vehicle it is. I fully accept that I will lose money when I sell the vehicle (though I did make a small profit on a Rolls Royce Ghost) but the upside is I get to experience some incredible vehicles and never have to suffer the guilt trip that many endure over "can I justify keeping/running 3 cars/bikes" or "I love this but I have to sell it". Indeed I aim to generally keep a vehicle for around 12 months. This works for me, and I won't be changing my approach any time soon...
Love the outside shot from the bridge. Got to see more for them if possible on top-speed runs, It fully displays the speed.
I've seen them in older videos, but I'm asking for more. Please:)
Nice touch on 'The sky is blue'.😁
I literally felt the hairs stand up on my back when the engine sounds started at 1:32 - what an awesome car! Congrats JayEmm!
I've been expecting 'this ,looking forward to episode two ,good luck James.
This was such a great Intro!!! Simply amazing. I had goosebumbs tbh
I always enjoy your camera work James. That intro was exceptional, well done.
Great stuff, James!
Thanks for the great content
Well done for taking a chance it will bring us joy to see your journey great work
Great video Jay, love the story telling and congrats on owning a legend!
Great choice James. I love the DBS.
Bravo James for having the bottle buying this car 👏
Most of us would have ran a mile especially like a small thing like not having the car in full presentation on collection day 😮 you have a lot of faith 🙏 brilliant content as per James keep it going 👏👏👏
What a roller coaster, and you described the story so well. I think you made the right decision - the heart wants what it wants. 👍
Excellent film thanks, appreciate your openness and explaining everything, very informative. How does it work having the c ar for two weeks before inspection, will you then have to get your money back out of the dealer if too much is wrong?!
Congrats ! And you are far from mad. You picked the best modern Aston there is. The DBS is my favorite car ever. Looking forward to the content on this DBS as I’ve always wondered if I should have gotten a TT instead of a manual.
DBS is a very good choice! Style, engine, noise + Aston badge! What else?! Hope the inspection will come clean and you can fully enjoy the ownership! Great video as always ;)
Looking forward to the up and coming AM content it’ll be interesting to see where and how it goes 🤞it won’t cost you too much!
Woah! A bold purchase, a very 'rollercoastery' story with it, but maybe... just maybe, the risk paid off? Who knows. Best of luck with it, sounds and looks gorgeous 😃
Jay, fair play. You deserve it.
Congratulations.
I’m glad you’ve fallen in love with it and especially the looks (I can completely relate James), these are the most beautiful and elegant cars on the road and even as an Aston owner myself, our VH car keeps surprising me (in a lovely way). Sometimes I forget that I’ve taken the Aston out and not the daily and I see this absolutely gorgeous car in the car park and I’m immediately like ‘oh WOW! Isn’t that stunning’, and then I actually realise that it’s our car 🥰 it’s such a wonderful feeling. Enjoy ownership, these are fabulous cars in every way possible.
The DBS is truely a beautiful thing! At 16:45 the pannel gaps of the door and the bonnet don´t look quite right, but this might be because of the camera angle. Congrats, though! Great sounding piece of kit, too!
Great opening to the video - great shots & music - real quality. Love the car and hope the checks don't find anything bad.... so whats the fuel consumption like?
Very nice story telling James. I quite enjoyed this video. You've earned yourself a subscriber. Wishing you happy miles in your Aston!
Aston owner here. DBS. Excellent. Choice.

right choice? wow! most certainly is and I look forward to hearing many, many more stories on how life is with the Aston. Stunning and a very engaging tale too.....excellent
Great video James, this is a perfect example of doing what you want, no influence or pressure. Bought it because you want it with the added satisfaction of probably saving it from continued gash improvements! Looking forward to see how it goes. Good luck with this one. Think I’d seek out the correct wheels and de-wrap any bits that haven’t already been done. It will look like a different car with a bit of work to bring the paint back. Although black cars never stay clean for very long 😅
You put any Steely Dan cd in the DBS and all sky clears blue! Good choice, lovely enginesound.
I grew up in Long Stratton. Shout out to Stratton Motor Co.! Remember looking at the Lagonda through the showroom window on my way to school. How out of place was that in 1980s rural South Norfolk!
Looking foward for the inspection video 😊
Congratulations 🎉🍾🎊 on the new to you amazing car. i also like the new music, I am just wondering will you soon be asking us to call you Mr.Bond ?
That intro was beautiful and a brilliant idea for letting us guess detail by detail without the engine noise giving it away.
I remember meeting you at the Morgan tour experience you collaborated with a couple of years ago and we spoke about having to get your content editing time down to keep the weekly output up. So I can appreciate the extra time spent B rolling the detail shots and the slicker intro!
Congrats, great car too!
Good for you Jay..and I do hope that All will be just fine.happy motoring
Congratulations! this is my dream car. My dad has an oynx black 4.7 V8 vantage and it looks stunning in that colour
I’m liking this new journey, oh the joy of old cars, I’m running a 22yrs old 996 with 195,000 miles on the clock, can totally relate to the highs and lows, keep the madness flowing 🕺🏻
At 1:52 I can confirm you did extremely well!
I love this car 😍
That's lovely. Great storytelling too - fingers crossed it all turns out ok!
I’m looking forward to see how this one plays out. Lovely, lovely car that I hope is a goodun. There is a neglected but well used silver DBS near to home. Whenever I walk past with my youngest she insists that we check that it’s still there.
Nice one James. I'm looking forward to the Bamford Rose verdict. Fingers are crossed.
Loved the delivery of this vid, I think weve all been there, regardless of the price of the vehicle, where you just done know if you're buying a lemon or not. Looming forward to more on this car!
Congratulations on your new car, and an Aston at that! As for the music, I think you could dig into something under the surface. British rock band Magnum started out in Birmingham in May 1972, and released their 23rd album in January of this year. The song writer and guitarist died the same week, so there will be no more new material from them. But they left you lots to dig into, within your general range of preference - asserted from what you have stated you like to listen to. Music is like cars: There's something to be said for what is developed with a massive budget, but there is so much magic created where the resources aren't as plentiful.
Hi James, loved the vid as always I do :-) - I used to be an ARDS instructor and have taught in many cars over the years - a couple of special stand out cars for me and the DBS is right up there - spookily I followed one home earlier today before then spotting and watching you in yours ?! - all crossed it comes back from the inspection with no nasties :-)

ps - still got and love my Honda S2000 Mugen GT
Perfect music choice. Cannot believe how similar my taste is, including cars. I just miss the Ric Flair shirt! Wooo!
This is one of the best car videos you’ve done, I guess it’s the story. Just a suggestion from a guy who has no idea about UA-cam success but it might be worth checking out more vehicles that have a story, taking a risk, making it an adventure. It’s definitely entertaining.
Great car and a great video, please keep it if all is well, the noise and looks alone are worth it!
Wow, that's a saga and a half. Great choice, though. I absolutely LOVE the DBS. IT's definitely a dream car of mine, too.
That intro reveal!!! So so good!
Wow Jay, this video was so well produced, I've never heard of a soundtrack like that used for car review videos.
Thanks J!, Hope everything works out well for you with this car! 🙏🙏
Brilliant content, James. Was that sky blue pink at 10:05? Seriously, this is the perfect car for you to create content about putting all of its niggles right and bringing this stunning masterpiece back up to A1 condition.👍
Looking forward to following all the next chapters in your AM journey!
I think the DBS has aged quite well compared to the DB9. It's only little changes, eg. the rear lights, but they make quite a big difference. The car shows its age a little in the interior, but so does any car. Yours sounds nice, I also think the exhaust flap has been kept open, might aswell let it roar.
I'm always interested in your music choices , that was quite a selection for the car! Bet that system sounds great too.
DBS is also my dream car😍 Always enjoy the episodes that you speak about your own thought process with some real money numbers! Keep the good work James!
I am sooooooo pleased for you!!!! Well done!!!!
well done, glad you explained everything but took the leap/risk/whatever. Sounds like an owner(s) who have been careless or rough with the car rather than particularly bad (fingers crossed) . looking forward to hearing an update after the inspection. PS would drifting or sliding into kerbs damage the diff?
The music choice at the intro is just spot on.. nice.. i know that just a few people will point that out
Thankyou, glad you liked it
@@JayEmmOnCars Hi James, who did the Centre of the Sun cover? Loved it.
Great video, loved the opening and then the warts and all telling of the purchase story. Still can’t wrap my head around a dealer paying £70k and then selling for £50k! Fingers crossed the diff is ok 🤞and now looking forward to the follow up vid.
Hi James, great content as always. Loving the shirt in this one, where did you get it from? Thanks
Claudio Lugli
Nice choice. Looking forward to the story unfolding. At some stage i`ll pull the trigger on another nice car but meantime, i`ll live vicariously through your exploits.
Congratulations Jay! Lookes awesome 🤩
As always, great story. Congratulations on your DBS. It does look like it will need some work, but Bamford Rose should be able to help. Personally, I was more attracted to to the original spec DBS, which was manual gearbox only, and 2+0 seating (no useless back seats). The auto gearbox and back seats seem to me to walk it back towards DB9 a bit. Still, all the other enhancements are there. I probably paid too much for mine back in 2017, but I didn't know enough about these cars back then. I've learned a lot since then, some of it the hard way.
A few tips for you::
1. Control arm and sway bar bushings will be on their way out by now. The symptoms will be instability in cornering and at higher speeds, sqeeking and creaking noises over speed bumps and car park thresholds. The front suspension will eventually start making scary popping sounds in turns. I replaced all 8 control arms (front and rear, upper and lower) and the sway bar bushings, and it absolutely transformed the handling.
2. For the leather dash panels, Aston Martin Bits has them for a considerable discount over main dealer parts department pricing.
3. Have the PCV values replaced, if they haven't been. This helps prevent oil build up in the intake manifolds, fouling of the spark plugs, and misfires.
4. The AM08 version of the V12 (unique to the DBS) doesn't have the issues the AM04 V12s in the early DB9s did. Keep the oil topped up, address any misfire issues quickly, and it will serve you well. Oh, and don't get suckered into Bamford Rose's "your V12 is going to die a horrible death at the slightest hint of a misfire so you should pay us serious cash to de-cat it" fear mongering. These engines do not have a high failure rate, and as long as you take proper care of them, you'll be fine.
5. If you get the "Tyre System Fault" warning on the dash, it may be time to replace the TPMS sensors, as the system is having difficultly detecting the radio signals from them. If it says, "Check Tyres," pull off immediately, and check the tyres.
Good luck!
Nice video ! Keep us updated on that DBS situation ;)
