id give anything to see paul weller reunite the jam for a one off.id have given to have been older than just a kid when they were originally out in late 70s and early 80s cause if i was older my parents would have let me go watch them before they split up.paul wellers words are still true to this day.the man is the modfather.simple.respect always.
"Ba ba ba ba ba ba!" I remember we came out singing this cheer, shouting & laughing on the streets of Boston, after seeing the boys 4 my only time @ The Orpheum Thtr fall '82... Running on the spot we were emotionally crippled but still kicking out the foundations in our hearts & minds, determined to see that this world's boat gets rocked... [Another Ace of hearts find.]
When I figured this out on guitar I suddenly realized what a cop of "Dear Prudence" the progression was. Strange, I've always hated that song but "Running On The Spot" is one of my fave Jam numbers. This version is killer- and I can't believe Buckler is singing on stage!
The Beatles nicked plenty too (Come Together for a start) - it's what great musicians do, take their influences and make them into something different and vital.
I was at the concert at Bingley Hall in Birmingham, seems so long ago now! My favourite album has got to be "Dig the New Breed" I love all the live performances probably because I was at most of them!!! Fucking Great.
wish i was with you i was to young my older brother was a jam fan i mean he loved it but with job cuts and and no money but shit i love this and all ways will .
This is fkin brill. The best version and good performance to, from a ledgend whom wrote music for the right reasons and this song proves my point i think i hope. "i beleive in life and i beleive in love" "intelligence should be are first weapon"
this is from THE GIFT album, which was great in parts, but if you wanna check out their best albums?? get ALL MOD CONS, SETTING SONS and SOUND AFFECTS. All them albums are the bollocks!!! people talk about bands like kasabian nowadays as great, but wouldnt hold a candle to the jam.
@BattleofTours732 Your friends are followers. They can't think for themselves like most kids in high school. All those records you have; they were all made buy the time Paul Weller was 23. He read one book in high school but he was this incredibly formidable lyricist. Everything The Jam did had balls and any band from any era would have trouble measuring up to what they accomplished in a 5 year span. My favourite Jam album is Sound Affects, how 'bout you? What's your favourite?
Fire, Passion, integrity, brilliant songs, sharp clothes, Rickenbackers..... from a band that got number #1s because they meant everything to us then....no stylists or outside songwriters, no one telling you how to sell it to the kids.....oh and he's #1 40 yrs later. Was music better then.....🤔👍
I think the thrust of this song was toward those who 'revel in rejection' i.e. the aging punks of the time (and today) who project their woes 'out there' and fail to get their fingers out of their backsides. They do the talk but not the walk (and all that guff ;-)
town called malice - 12inch single double AA side precious - absolutely right! - anyone got a vid of Jam performing 'Big Bird' on any of the final nights - thats got to be the rarest if you know the Jam????
Speak for yourself mate! ;-) Yes, I get your point...one of Paul's greatest fears was to appear a hypocrite. But we all are (at least to some degree) Cheers
Empty gestures indeed, I wonder!?!?! Anyway, this is one of the best and most incisive songs about 'that' generation ever. The lyrics speak for themselves, and proves Weller's 'god-like' genious. Weller is very intellgent to have been so involved in that movement, and yet see the good, and obviously crap, about it. + the new version is shit in comparison, I'm afraid. It's just like running on the spot!
I just love how into it Paul is at this show. He's singing each and every word with absolute conviction, I think elsewhere someone said he's spitting out every word. No damn cell phones, the crowd is just as into it as he is (which is made more clear if you watch the whole show). If I could go back in time to any show in history, this might be the one. They do like five encores.
He had sincerity, passion, honesty (painfully so...) and heart. They never "mailed it in"; each single/LP/Gig was all out. God love 'em. Nothing like 'em since? likely never.
You are so right about the audience. People seem more interested in filming and showing off on Facebook than enjoying the moment. And you're right about Weller - where are the angry young men now?
Listen to Weller talk about peace signs and empty gestures. The Jam was never comfortable with the leftist gesturing of the 80s - anti-England, political and charity concerts. Never really fit in. Kinda of like The Band was to the 60s. Both created timeless nativist songs.
"I believe in life and I believe in love, but the world in which I'm living keep trying to prove me wrong." Amazing lyrics.
Unbelievable lyrics
Probably the greatest lyric of all time
I'm 50 years old and still blasting my ears with this... Oh fuck I loved this band... Some things never change it's true lol...
Im 27, listen to this since im 12.. same feeling
me too. I still remember every single word. my god it sounds so f-ing great.
Best band from England ever, then he f, it all up
I'm 55 now, still is an incendiary song.
55 years old now, and have been listening to this from then to now. I like The Clash etc, but The Jam was the best of those groups.
outstanding band, saw them at Carlisle, Newcastle, Whitley bay, bridlington spa hall, unbelievable energy, never be bettered...
I got 2 c them at whiteley Bay and brid 2 great times bud
I could just cry listening to this. Pure emotion.
a lot can be said about the energy and tightness of the jam in their live hey day, this song is incredible.
So true. Everyone talks about Weller but Foxton and Buckler were both top class musicians and the three of them were so tight as a unit.
This might be the greatest song ever written.
The energy and power of just 3 people and one talented song writer
"Out in the pastures we call society
You can't see further than the bottom of your glass..."
Long live The Jam!
One of the greatest songs
I still cnnot believe that I got to see them on this tour!
Weller... truly believed in every word he ever wrote and every note he ever sung xxx
"We see a lot of peace signs at our gigs these days, I just wonder whether or not they're just empty gestures so it's up to you to prove them..."
some of the best music of my somewhat misspent youth...Thanks !
Love this track brings back some great memories of this band.

One of the best songs ever written . This is a very moving clip , thanks for posting .

mndandy Weller nicked so many songs he’s a thief
The Beatles nicked plenty too (Come Together for a start) - it's what great musicians do, take their influences and make them into something different and vital.

Raw, energetic, nasty, weller at his finest, god bless you bro.
Probably the best jam song ever. But I love em all. 👍
Saw them twice the 3 of them made such a noise so tight just amazing
I've only got the shortened Bingley Hall Concert - so it's nice to see this. Thanks Ace
Look at Weller, playing with proper passion, The Jam were the best, glad I got to see them live in 1982
Amazing performance.
First song I heard the Jam play live. Soundcheck at Newcastle City Hall, leaning on the stage at Bruce's feet!
Awesome, just wish I'd got to see them live, alas I was born a year or two too late.
I'd give my right eye to have seen them play live.
they were fantastic........I thank my lucky stars that I was able to see them live
My both brothers did
Fucking brilliant live,,, never mind wally meres still going
still so powerful after all these years.

"i beleive in life and i beleive in love"
"intelligence should be are first weapon"
They make the clash look like the only band that never mattered.

IT GETS ALL VIOLENT WHEN THE BOAT GETS ROCKEDDDDDDDDDDD
Intelligence should be our first weapon
@BattleofTours732
A very worthy band to explore & love When Your Young. And, a good long while aft.
Short, sharp and sweet
We are all...running on the spot.😎

Dig the pogoing masses! How many other bands out there can match a Jam crowd? Not many!!!
This video is from the same gig, but the dvd doesnt have that song :S
I got the full gig here. 22 songs
Though we keep piling up the building blocks, the structure never seems to get any higher
Don't get any better
laughed at old men who sit and drink beer.. guess that's us now!
@flashingarrows52 What happened between Rick and Paul?
Speak for yourself mate! ;-)
Yes, I get your point...one of Paul's greatest fears was to appear a hypocrite. But we all are (at least to some degree)
Cheers
Time for all of us to stop running on the spot and kick the government's out of the ball park and get our lives back, fuk the system ❤
@BattleofTours732 I'm the same, The Jam and Madness shocked my freinds :)
@vinyljunkie72 Yeah, man. If you were right in the head, you were rad on The Jam.
"How are things in your little world...etc"
Burning sky, Setting Sons exc. album. He knew about it alright.
Hey nothing offends me mate, offence???
Was that Rick Buckler doing vocals at the end?
No

Was this their last tour?
Speed helps
You are so right about the audience. People seem more interested in filming and showing off on Facebook than enjoying the moment. And you're right about Weller - where are the angry young men now?
Cover in Brazil... Very good...
