We LOVE Olivia Colman In This Role! 😍 - Secret Invasion Episode 2 Reaction "Promises"

- I don't know about you guys, but WE ARE LOVING THIS CHARACTER! We might not agree with her methods but we love her dialog and top notch acting by Olivia Colman is really bringing this character to life! Things get way messier in Secret Invasion Episode 2 where we see Gravik and Nick Fury's history with one another, we get a glimpse into what the Skrulls are planning, and we see that Gravik was working without the approval of the council when planning the attack on Moscow. Nick Fury and Rhodey get into a heated exchange (what a great scene) and what a HUGE reveal at the end with Nick Fury's love life!

21:57 Varra is her name, but she's credited as Priscilla, so I guess that's her human name sort of like how the Prime Minister and Secretary General of the UN had human names--they can't go by their Skrull names in society.
Nick has a vested interest in helping the Skrulls, that's his extended family; his wife's family. Nick's game with Talos, Tell me something I don't know, wasn't necessary. Surely Verra told Nick everything he needed to know about Skrullos, Emperor Drogge and the Skrull's troubled past, the past Shirley Sakar doesn't want them to repeat on Earth--Skrulls in the comics aren't good guys, a bunch of warmongers. Still, the group Talos was with in Captain Marvel appear to be the group trying to get away from all that. Mar-Vell, Wendy Lawson, Carol's superior hid the Skrulls in her cloaked lab in space while she tried to build a light engine to relocate them elsewhere during the Skrull Kree War. To answer Mrs. Baus' question about how the Skrull arrived undetected they have advanced alien technology. Their ships are like them, they blend into their environment.
Nick marrying a Skrull makes sense to me, the Skrulls story isn't all that different from minority migrants on Earth, there's a lot of common ground there. And we shouldn't overlook how smitten he was in 1997 when he greeted Varra, you could here the excitement in his voice. Speaking of Varra, it certainly look like she had taken responsibility of Gravik, and why wouldn't she--the Skrulls refer to each other as brother and sister, and with so few of them left, they are the only family they have left, which is likely why they all worked so hard to make a home on Earth until they could have a more permanent home elsewhere. If Varra was Gravik's adoptive mother, what would that make her husband, Nick? We see Nick trying to bond with Gravik, and Talos already told us that Gravik took it the hardest when Nick left. Gravik is a formidable foe because of Nick's teachings. Nick and Varra was his family on Earth, and they seemingly abandoned him on a world full of people that wouldn't want him here if they knew what he really looked like. Yikes! There's more to this story, I'm sure, but abandonment certainly appears to be the straw that broke this camel's back.
Why did Nick leave after Tony's funeral? Did Talos answer that question on the train to Warsaw? Talos asked Nick what happens when the host is gone and can be contacted; half the population was gone and people the universe over was desperate and bonding with whomever, as we saw in Endgame. Why wouldn't Talos send out the call to surviving Skrulls? There was more than enough room for his displaced people. Earth was at peace and there was more than enough room for everyone, and for a people running away from war, that must have sound fantastic! Anyway, upon Nick's return, you know he wanted to know what happened in his absence, and you'd think that his wife would have filled him in.
Nick wasn't gone because he wanted to, but because his job demanded his attention. How does one go about monitoring 1 million plus people who've assimilated into humanity--there's more than a million as the Skrulls have been procreating, as we saw at Gravik's compound. We don't know how their biology works, but if they're like humans they'd be able to increase their population by about 1/3 in 30 years. It would be impossible to monitor the whereabouts of a million people on the ground, he needed a much higher vantage point, which meant going to space, and SABER was designed to stop the next alien threat and that threat is here now. Nick has been watching the situation, gathering information and we've seen him at work doing just that in Far From Home, which is where they showed us SABER and they reminded us once again in WandaVision with the introduction of SWORD as well as Nick sending down one of his Skrull Agents to pick up Monica after the Westview incident with Wanda--Nick saw all of that! If Nick could see inside Wanda's Hex, he certainly saw what was going on in the Falcon and the Winter Soldier. You know he knows about the GRC, the Flag Smashers, the Power Broker and Val and what she's doing with the CIA. Val might be working with Nick, she hinted to John Walker about this invasion during the end credits. The Power Broker is likely members of the Skrull Council, probably the Prime Minster of England and some other folks we haven't yet met. Gravik is probably part of that group, as he was already working with the Prime Minister. The Power Broker is most likely a collective and these are the folks I think Nick's gunning for, they're the ones Nick needs to takeout before relocating the Skrulls, I imagine. If the Skrulls are going to have a chance to be free of their past, they need to remove the problematic parts of their past that got them where they are.
Has Nick really lost his touch? I doubt it! As I pointed out earlier he's been watching things, gathering information. And aside from gathering information what's another important tool of a spy? Subterfuge. Ironic that subterfuge comes naturally for Skrulls, its second nature. How does one defeat someone like that, especially if you cannot do what they do? You probably do what Nick's doing or what I think he's doing, which is stagecraft. Everyone everywhere friend and foe have the same opinion of him, that he's old and that he's lost his step. Who started that rumor? Why is Nick being so public? He arrived in an open field and made sure that people saw him walking on the streets of Russia and that people saw him in a crowded bar. He even went out of his way to have a very public falling out with Maria Hill in a bar that we know Gravik was in. Gravik proved that he was everywhere Nick made himself be known last episode when he transformed into the girl with the ball, the woman on the bench and the man in the bar. Gravik wanted Nick to know he was watching him, but Gravik doesn't appear that Nick wanted to be seen--we learned during Rhodes exchange with world leaders that CCTV captured Nick all over Russia. Nick's playing to everyone's assumptions and they're all writing him off and going forward with their plans, and that's what he wants, no? He wants to flush out the Power Broker, someone who's been working in the shadows for some time.
Did Gravik kill Maria because he wanted to hurt Nick or did Maria put the idea in his head the night before. Gravik was in earshot of her discussion with Nick and she warned him that if he wasn't up to snuff that he was going to get one of them killed. Gravik took the bait and shot Maria, as he wanted to show Nick that he didn't see him coming...but he actually did.
Nick's fight with Rhodes was definitely on camera, his fight with Talos was on a train that had its curtains drawn and we saw him breaking down on a public park bench. Nick wants to be seen falling apart, and people are watching him. Nick has few people that he can trust, and those that he does trust are few and far between. He did something similar in Winter Soldier and he drew out Alexander Pierce and Project Insight by faking his death. Did Maria do the same by removing herself from the field of play? I don't think she's dead--why did this episode start by showing us two women that are supposed to be dead? Personally, I think Soren has been Maria the whole time, and I think the real Maria has always been up on SABER like Nick the whole time. She wasn't in Far From Home, that was Soren seeing to her duties on Earth.
Anyway, this series is a lot of fun and I cannot see where things go from here. Super Skrull is coming and I like the direction they're taking him, but I can't wait to see how they deal with him. Nick has Monica who as an interesting skillset, but he likely has Vision too. Iron Heart is one the way too, and I'm now wondering if she'll make an appearance in this series. Her knowledge of Tony's armors could help with Rhodey's suit if he were to become a problem.

16:56 I love this easter egg! In the comics, there's a Super Skrull who has the powers of the Fantastic Four name K'urt. However, in the Secret Invasion comic, they made more Super Skrulls to mimic the powers of all the Heroes. Even though this is show is different from the comics, I like how their still slowly introducing the Super Skrulls
Yes love how they stayed true to characters that already exist within the MCU since the Fantastic 4 haven't been introduced yet!

the UK has a massive migration from the Caribbean called the wind Rush generation and most of them settled in Brixton and all over the UK
so Gravik has a welsh Cardiff accent, this story has strong ties to the 1948 Caribbean wind Rush and how they managed to assimilate into British culture
