Holly molly,, I’m I the only one that can’t believe how good that Mullen discovery sounded? I thought it was more of a beginners steel. It really held its own.

The Mullens seem brighter sounding and the GFI more bassy at first. The pickup change really sweetened the tone of the 2 Mullens.

I agree with Steven on sweeter tones after pickup swap. I was impressed by the tone of the GFI. Much better than I expected. They all sound great to my ears. I have a BMI S10 3x4 that has a sweet tone with stock pickup. My Derby SD10 3x5 has an E66 pickup and I really love the tone. Great job and Demo.

They all sound great which proves the point; 90% of the tone is in the players hands. I could hear slight difference between the 3 but to the average listener they wouldn’t notice it I wouldn’t think. I’m about to order a new Mullen G2 myself actually

I've got a double neck franklin and my middle pickup switch that made it possible to play both necks only works on the c6 neck not sure if it's in the tone pot on the bottom but I'd like to spruce it up a little but not to sure where to start as multi instrumentalist guitar and organ being my first instruments and drums I have the independence in my limbs but the technical side of the instrument I'm steel learning everyday and hope to get better as each day passes just have to keep putting in the hrs and greatness usually follows great video and comparison's thank you.

After listening again I like the Lawrence 705 on the Mullen best.

In my opinion, each of them sounds good. The most important is player's hands, ears, feeling and of course a thousands hours of playing.

Nice work Gary, they all sound great in your hands.
Lockdown 2 prevented me from visiting the shop in person so this is really helpful.
Best listened to with headphones or good speakers.

As others have said, the change in pickups of the Mullens were significantly better, but over all the GFI sounded best to my ears. I don't know what the differences are with the type of build, and would quite like to know more.
The only real experience i have of playing a pedal steel is my own custom build from around 47 years ago - forced to build as no money to buy and left handed. So nothing to compare it to. (great satisfaction in building, and the challenge of creating a changer without actually even seeing one previously, but i suspect mine probably falls short)
One other observation to make, it would have made more sense if all were played with exactly the same piece of music. Then a better comparison could be made. That started ok, but then kind of drifted. Still good that this video wa made. So congrats....

I have the Lawrence 705 in my Mullen but I like the way the George 705 sounds better. Going to try to buy one but I hear they’re out of the pickup business.

They all sound great to me. Its prolly cause he’s a good musician.
Especially within the context of a mix, no one would be able to tell them apart.

Not a fair comparison, because of the metal neck which sounds brighter and cleaner than the other guitars.

The construction of all 3 guitars is so vastly different, the pickup change is a minor factor.

The mullens chrome trim had a little jump on appearance. Appearance isn't sound though. GFI has the better sound, tone wise and otherwise. Seems to me this video is less a demonstration and more a sales pitch to buy a mullens being it only showed an Expo GFI. I'm not bashing Mullen's, as a matter of fact, any steel guitar company still in business is a small miracle considering steel guitarists are an endangered species. They've practically removed it from country(?) music today along with the country shuffle beat and now, imo, Steelers must expand their musical palettes toward other genres that still give the steel the attention it deserves. One such genre is Southern Gospel. Some of the steel work in it reminds me of the golden age of country. Mullen's makes a good axe, looks good, and has a good sound. However, the GFI has a smoother, cleaner tone with effortless touch . In my humble biased opinion, lol, as I own a GFI student model 3x4, they have perfected the elimination of the bugs that plagued the old steels of the past, especially cabinet drop. Their manufacturing is revolutionary and their cost of production is amazingly affordable to the consumer. I wish they'd showed the mechanics of the Mullen as I'd like to see it closer. Hey, all steels are good, and if I was rich I'd have one of each but GFI is my baby, built better, less headaches, & more bang for an already stressed out buck. Keep pickin brothers, we are getting smaller in numbers everyday.

A lil Hwy 40 Blues at the end there!! Sounds great!! I have been mulling over putting a single coil back in my MSA Universal. What do you think?!
