Macedonian Language VS. Polish | How similar are Slavic Languages?

  • In this episode of Slavic languages comparison series we're looking into similarities between Polish and Macedonian language. 🇵🇱💬🇲🇰 Polish and Macedonian turned out to be more similar that I thought.
We’re going to take turns in describing pictures in front of us, to see if we understand each other well enough to guess the picture the other person is talking about. We’re going to describe 5 different images and compare relevant vocabulary. In the upper right corner of the screen I put a word counter that counts the words that, to me, sound identical or very similar in Polish and Macedonian language.

Interesting how Czech and Slovak is a bridge between West Slavic and South Slavic, e.g. ostrov (wyspa). It shows how fluently Slavic languages merged one to another, this continuous inteligibility region to region was interrupted by migration of German (Austria) and Hungarian languages to central Europe. In Czech you can see both forms of declination of words like "hrad" you can have "na hradě" (similar to Polish "grad - na gradzie") - same ending like Polish or "na hradu" like in South Slavic (na ovom gradu). Same for other words like "les" - we can say both v lese and v lesu . Seems Czech preserved both evolution type of declination. Czech and Slovak pronunciation share simplification of pronunciation with South Slavic languages.

I'm an Indian who studied in Russia for 5 yrs and Ukraine for 4, starting from 2011. Learnt both languages (my Ukrainian is a little mehhh but I'm pretty confident with my Russian). And when I visited places like Czechia, Macedonia and Serbia, I can communicate by speaking Russian slowly (word by word) and using different synonyms so that they will recognize words with same roots. And voila! They pretty much understood everything most of the time.

It's a shame other ethnolinguistic groups of Europe cannot have the same kind of belonging to their languages that Slavs have. I wish those who spoke Germanic and Romance languages in Europe could have the same kind of relationships, but I understand Germanic and Romance languages are far more different from one another than Slavic languages are.
Still even within the language families people like the English speakers don't seem to agree they are all one people, even when they all live on the one small island.

If you think all slavic languages originated from macedonian you are totally wrong. There is old slavic-church language which is esentially bulgarian language. No such thing as macedonian slavic nation. Macedonians were greek people and modern macedonians are bulgarians who live in this region, but were opressed by yugoslav officials not to declare as such, and after so many years they forgot their origin.

Surprising because I had no idea how many similar words there are in Polish and Macedonian, because they are pretty different ( I wasn't able to understand anything in Macedonian, apart from these words :)) ). And the funniest thing about this video was that word "peczurka" in Macedonian, because its equivalent in Romanian is "ciuperca" [čuperka] ~like, which is basically the same word, only the first two "groups of letters"- so to say - are reversed. And it sounds very funny for a Romanian :)) I suppose in Bulgarian there is the same word or a very similar one to the one in Macedonian, and we may have borrowed it and modified a bit :))

@@BudgetGainsByJJ And by the way, since you like the Polish so much, would you mind teaching me some Macedonian in the future? I, as a native Polish speaker, would like to become a polyglot one day and speak every single Slavic language to make the best of my interpreting career! If you're willing to increase my knowledge of your beautiful language, I'd really appreciate your effort in doing so! I've tried to learn Macedonian in the past and know a few things here and there, but I only learnt those from limited resources and surprisingly wasn't able to find myself a book with dialogues/anecdotes of people describing a situation in the Macedonian language, unlike for the other languages I'm also learning where I have both a phrase book and dialogue book provided (with audio support, that is!). I personally think we should admire the world for what it truly is and all it has to offer for us in terms of culture, heritage and authenticity, paying a bit more attention to even the smallest nations in the world like Macedonia which are very often ignored by bigger countries as a result of superiority, or even poorly recognised as not many people around the world mention such small nations. I am an exception to this disappointing story and absolutely love indulging with people from these small countries when it comes to sharing thoughts and ideas to learn a bit about each other thus ultimately understand the world in a different way one might perceive otherwise!

A brilliant film, I clicked it thinking that Macedonian and Polish are two extreme cases on the spectrum of Slavic languages, but it turned out that the tasks were so cool that they perfectly highlighted very similar words. I really enjoyed watching it, and although I didn't catch as many words as Norbert, when he pointed it out, I thought "well, it's obvious" :D. However, I found it best in the last photo, because I already knew that "wyspa" (island) is a very Polish word and that "ostrów" is the original one. This word appears very often in Polish geography (e.g. Ostrów Tumski in Wrocław) and many Poles are not aware of its original origin.

As I've learned russian and and a little ukrainian, I can understand almost everything when it's in written form, but not as much when it's spoken. The same thing with polish and the west branch of slavic languages, completely different pronunciation although quite understandable for me when written. In my last two years before the A-level I learned Czech as well. Ten years ago I had a teacher training - further education where I learned Polish in Wrocław. Passed successfully the B1 level exams. 2 years ago I started learning Croatian: there are so many similarities in the Slavonic or Slavic languages e.g. vocabulary and grammar like nouns and verbal structures. I'd say that in general the western slavonic languages are nearer to the South slavonic languages than the Eastern group like Russian, Ukrainian. I also speak Spanish very well and know some basic Italian but I got the impression that the similarities amongst the Romances aren't that obvious.

But when i read polish, i understand even much more! It’s so similar but russian for example is much easier for me to understand. Russians speak and sound like we Macedonians.
Btw. There is one more word besides „pecurka“ for mushroom in macedonian. There is the word „gabi“ or „g‘bi“ too. :)

Manifesto from the Provisional Government of Macedonia - 1881 Kustendil, 11th/23rd March 1881 True to the original Dospat 18th/30th April 1881. President, Vasil Chomo[1] Secretary, Nikola Trajkov. Real Macedonians, faithful offspring of your fatherland! Will you let your fatherland be destroyed? Look at her, how she is suffocated in slavery, bleeding from the wounds that the surrounding nations have inflicted her with! Look at the heavy chains that the Sultan has put her in! In such a helpless state, all in tears, our dear Macedonia, our beloved fatherland is calling you: my faithful children, you descendants of Aristotle and Alexander the Great. ………………. It's clean. We are Macedonians. We are not Slavs. We have been here 1000 before the Slavs came. Slavs are enemies, Slavs are conquerors of Macedonia. The Slavs destroyed our language, our history, our Architecture, our true Macedonian identity. It is a shame for real Macedonian still believe the communist Slavic propaganda. We are Macedonians, Not slavs. Yes, the ancient Macedonians had some common elements with the Ancient Greeks, but they were not Greeks, they were Macedonians. And today we have common elements with the Bulgarians but we are not Bulgarians.

As a Bosnian, I was able to understand 90-95% from Macedonian (some sentences were spoken completely IDENTICAL the way we speak) and about 40% of Polish.
I have reached the conclusuon that understanding between different Slavic languages mostly depend on topics that people talk about.
For example, for parts of nature (woods, forest, river, lake, sea, mountain, sky, etc) we all use very, very similar, if not identical words. This video just prooved that fact one more time and this conversation was kinda easy one for both of you.
But (mostly) different words used for the verbs are the ones that make us issues in understanding each other.
My advace for all future videos: please make a deal with all participants before recording to speak SLOWLY.
When I was watching Polish-Bosnian conversation, my first thought was that Bosnian guy should have spoken much more slowly. I am pretty sure you would have understood each other much better.

Very often when I’ve heard Macedonian word that is not (very) similar to my native Slovenian language, I was happy that I’m very familiar (just like majority of Slovenians) with Serbian, Croatian,… and therefore usually could understand it immediately. Slavic speakers that are under heavy influence of another Slavic language(s) are definitely in advantageous position to understand other Slavic languages at least little better, sometimes even much better. (Slovenians, Ukrainians because of Russian, Slovaks and Czechs,…).
