- We talked to an American Airlines flight attendant about what the job is really like.
Workers haven't received a raise since 2019, and they don't get paid until the doors on the airplane close. They're fighting for more.

That's disgusting. Workers should be paid for ANY and ALL time that the employer makes a REQUIREMENT.
There was recently a case about just that. Apple lost, the employees won.
@@rayrous8229 that's an awesome update to hear thank you for sharing!!
@@rayrous8229 what case was it?
How do they not get paid for boarding?! They’re on the plane working! That’s literal wage theft.
Bullshit is what it is!!!
Many jobs are like this. Phone chatlines you get paid by the call but do not get paid while you wait for?another call to come in, so frequently the operator makes under minimum wage. Before I became a union actress, we were told to come in half hour early, but didn't get paid for the half hour of waiting in holding and salaried people do not normally get paid overtime either. They get away with this because these are so-called glamour jobs.
@@IMeMineWhoThey get away with it because unless the workers are organized to fight against this, you will be fired for not working for free.
@@Praisethesunson Actually, flight attendants ARE unionized... pilots just got a raise, now it's time for FA.
It is called union busting. My mother was a FA, they were paid from the time they arrived at the airport till the aircraft was shut down . Long time ago
Workers' Solidarity!!! I cant believe this made me dispise airline companies even more than I already did.
The Pilots' Union just got their pilots a BIG raise! Time for the Flight Attendants' Union to earn their pay for you guys/gals. Everyone thinks your job is just to serve snacks and beverages (well, yeah, but...) but in an emergency situation, your training REALLY comes through -- and luckily for 99% of us flying public, we will NEVER see that side of your job!!!!
Sounds like Glen Quagmire will be having more parties... Giggidy Giggidy!
That’s terrible. All my friends who were flight attendants 5 years ago have quit. The mistreatment and bad pay is astounding.
It’s only worth it for the flight benefits… if you can even use them
Same thing my cousin who was a flight attendant
@@granadahills1017oooo look, a capitalist bootlicker.
You're soooo special.
Let's hope that rule applies to your own loved ones.
Preach at em.
Meanwhile, you've accomplished nothing in your own life and are just passing along the anger.
@@granadahills1017what do you mean
That's like only paying firefighters when they are actively fighting a fire.
Its like paying firefighters only when they are actively fighting a fire and not when they are showing up for a car accident where someone has to have the car cut to get them out, other EMS type emergencies, or safety presentations.
@@leelindsay5618 Yes, exactly.
Great analogy.
Good analogy. It's like not getting paid until the water comes out of the hose. Like those hoses will unfurl themselves and roll themselves back up.
And then complain that not enough people want to be firefighters and how this is a moral failure of the generation, as if they don't need to put food on the table as well.
That’s some brazen wage theft. You work but don’t get paid? Half of my working hours are waiting for something to do and you bet your ass they pay me for every minute of it. Flight attendants are getting a raw deal. Hit ‘em where it hurts!
D@mn right. I'm there, I get paid. Not my fault they added too many people or some such.
Great, so you'll pay double for airfare?
You can only fly JetBlue, and pay more if desired.
Since you have integrity, you'll spend more money, right?
@@granadahills1017 voting with your wallet is a hollow gesture. Airlines (like most industries) are too highly consolidated. You hate walmart so you go shop at target where they do the same things? We don’t beat big corporations by boycotting or shopping with “more ethical” businesses. We beat them by organizing in the workplace. Consolidated labor power is the only force that can challenge the consolidated power of capital. When workers unionize we support their efforts. When they strike we don’t buy from their employer. When the media tries to tell us the workers are causing trouble we speak the truth that the workers are only fighting for their fair share.
I don’t care about ideological purity and workers rights isn’t about my own self-actualization. I care about materially improving the circumstances of workers and I trust them to tell us how they want to do that.
I know work is work and not everyone gets to choose what they do for money, but I honestly cannot imagine actively working for a company that openly steals my wages like this. Every company performs some sort of wage theft, but literally doing your job and not getting paid for it is actually criminal and no one should put up with it.
Flight attendants should be able to clock in as they start boarding their flights in preparation to assist passengers when they board their flight. the hourly pay should be relative to the number of hours of providing any service to passengers, and that is including boarding and any connected flights that extend their travels or have a simple policy such as "if they are seen in a uniform they are on the clock".
To simplify this, any time an employee is actually working for an employer, they should get paid for their work.
Good .
You invest in an airline, and let us know how your MBA strategies impact the share price in a year or two.
Pilots are paid the same FYI, mostly from push back to gate to return to gate.
@@granadahills1017 That is stupid because part of their duties is a safety-critical pre-flight inspection of the aircraft. They may not even leave the ground if enough things are broken.
What about staff meetings? What about continuing education? What about preparation for the flight? After the flight? Every required minute should be compensated.
Flight attendants should get paid relative to the number of hours providing any service TO THE AIRLINE. If the airline wants labor, it should need to pay for that labor.
He said he forgot to meal prep, but realistically there is often not time if the trips are close together, or even if other errands need to be completed first.
Evil as fuck that Airlines get away with this.
Of course. That's how the rich function, though. No one could be wealthy without exploiting thousands of individuals! 😂🤣😂 Gotta have SOME "Cobra Commanders" out there, obviously. Winners like Chump, Puton, XiXiPi, Shenko, Jong-un, etc. They all make the world work! Running everything like the Alphas they are. 💪😎✌️
Watch the government prevent them from striking the way they did the rail road guys.
Right, well, you can pay JetBlue fares if desired.
Almost everyone has forgotten that on 9/10/2001 every major airline, except Southwest, was in bankruptcy court begging for a taxpayer bailout. Socialism for corporations, austerity for workers is the real American way.
It is evil. Evil.
1:15
um.. that's wage theft!! and.. with the money the airlines make?? they should absolutely pay you from the moment you step into the terminal!!!
I bet planes would experience maintenance delays measurably less often if attendants were paid during that time. It's completely ridiculous that if boarding takes ~30 minutes and disembarking + cleaning up after the monkeys get off takes another ~30-40 minutes that's literally half the flight time unpaid. I hope they authorize a strike
its cutting corners all around
airlines cut costs on maintenance , then refuse to pay attendants if that lack of maintenance causes the plane to be delayed its a fricking pyramid scheme
Nah, it won't have an impact on maintenance delays because delays already already costs hundreds of dollars per minute, but I do agree that flight attendants should get paid from the moment they sign in at work until they sign out after work is finished. -Former flight attendant here.
Plus, since when did they become the clean-up crew? I swear I remember a time when a cleaning crew come on board after the passengers deboarded. More work for less pay has got to be stopped! Dead in its tracks.
Sounds practically the same as what freight rail workers have been dealing with. So sick of the corporate greed.
That is staggering.
How are you not compensated for time being at work, while actually working?
This is one of my major pet peeves. Not only should workers be compensated for being at work - I believe they should be paid for their commute - both ways. _At least up until a predefined average time frame, e.g., 20min - 45min._
I drive a mere 11 miles one way. Once at 3am with _absolutely NO traffic,_ and it takes about 19min.
On that 11m trip I have to pass 14 traffic lights. Usually red. 😡
When leaving, the reverse trip takes somewhere around 30min because of increased traffic, and the same obnoxious lights.
Altogether it's almost an hour in the car where I don't see family, don't earn wages, and can truly do nothing but spend money on gas and destroy my vehicle - that few of us can live without in the modern world.
I know coworkers who have a 90+ minute one-way commute from Delaware or PA, into NJ.
By the end of the day they have spent THREE HOURS in the car.
So many of us are suffering from gentrification and the consolidation of wealth into certain areas.
These plutocrats still need workers, they still need their "servants" so they don't have to get off their ass, or make their own coffee, god forbid.
So workers are stuck with outrageous commutes. Totally uncompensated.
This economy is so imbalanced, so outrageously out of control in so many ways - and all to the benefit of the rich. This system has to be crushed.
We can start by Congress making laws that ensure a portion of profit must be redistributed to labor. You know, the people who ACTUALLY made the revenue in the first place?
Then there's about a thousand other things that can be done to stop the unmitigated greed and uncontrolled upward transfer of wealth.
Most Americans don't even know what a pension is, or that many workers used to receive one from all manners of industry and employers.
Those pensions have been dissolved so that the greedmongering swine can take _just that much more profit._
So they can have 7 vacation homes, while none of their workers can even afford to take a vacation in the first place.
They've destroyed pensions, driven up home prices, stagnated wages, busted unions, sent millions of jobs overseas (these "patriots"), raised prices as far as they dare, created an intentional "supply crisis", gambled with the mortgages of the few who did own homes, etc.
Now they gamble with other forms of debt. Profiting off the suffering of others.
Most have never spent a day in their lives doing something they didn't explicitly desire.
I'm sick of it all.
Crush it.
Rich gotta rich. Poor gotta serve and suck it up, buttercup. 😂🤣😂 If you ain't rich, you ain't sheet.
That also has something to do with how automotive companies wormed their way into city planning and destroyed what cities actually are supposed to be. There was an actual court case over them destroying America's public transit infrastructure. CEOs were fined $1.
I don't agree with paying for commute times but other than than 💪👍💜
@@kasahadragon9499 if they had to pay for commutes, the industries would have incentive to let anyone who can work remotely, to encourage the building of mass transit...
...And THAT is better for the planet!
When I was a kid, summers were maybe 95° here at the worst.
...It was 106°f Monday.
I'm old enough to have observed global warming happening, and we need to change.
@@kasahadragon9499 why not? if you can't afford to pay people wages that will allow them to live in your city, you should at least pay them for needing to commute from some place they can afford to live.
Hey I’m currently a mover and I don’t get paid until I hit the road and the other workers that don’t drive don’t even get paid for drive time. It’s really fucked because we don’t even get paid for full drive time. Just an hour of it

Goddamn underrated comment right here 😂😂
Criminal. It's really that simple. This is criminal.
Thanks for showing this. I just applied to AA and now I'm having second thoughts. I don't think I could do this job without boarding pay, that's just insane.
I hope you get everything you're asking for and more. You deserve it.

Shhh!
That man's going through all sorts of facial emotions
'Workers of the world 🌎 unite. You have nothing to lose but your chains.'
I just started at AA in TX, I can't believe they treat the FA's like that man.
Getting hit up with an Expedia pre-roll advertisement is hilarious. 😂
When i researched how flight attendants get paid i felt like puking.
They should get paid door to door. Not take off to landing.
Taking an hour to get reasy for work, especially flight attendants, and another hour trying to get to the plane in the airport is working.
Pay should be airport door to airport door. If a flight attendant is in the airport they are at work.
I stand in solidarity with you guys!! I can't wait to see you guys win this 🥰🔥
that's some of the worst wage theft i've ever heard. and the fact you're stuck eating the terminal food means it's close to a company town situation.
It really baffles me that in the country where literally everything seems to be about money... people just accept not getting paid for work.
A few years ago my boss tried to get us to show up 5 minutes early for work to have a daily information meeting. we were open to it until he admitted that time would be unpaid. Needless to say we told him to fuck off with that idea.
He kept having those empty meetings for a few weeks before he gave up, almost respect the stamina of that asshole.
Oh people still showed up well more than 5 minutes early for work, public transport is only so reliable after all, but we all just ignored him, milled around and drank coffee until our shift actually started.
working 12-13 hours and only getting 5 hours pay - Homie is doing an 8 hour commute to work
I truly hope that you get the compensation that you deserve, no one should be working for free.
I agree that flight attendants make very little money and should be paid more but I’m not sure why you he is leaving out the Per Diem pay that both pilots and FA’s make. For flight attendants it’s $2.20 - $2.50 per hour starting at check in at your base until you return to base. This is on top of your “flight pay”. This adds up to roughly an extra $45 per day plus flight pay.
Holy smokes, that's Range Rover money!
Thank you for your continued important work - we have strength and power in the spreading of this kind of information, and so, the spreading of solidarity. All power and support to the people!!
He's spreading half truths/lies
if workers are "required to be" there, the employer should "be required" to pay them... after 8 hours, then they should be "required" to pay time and a half - same goes after 40 hours before the week turns around.
Sign in starts, the payment clock should start.
I am so glad you all are working together in solidarity to get a contract 🎉❤
There was a lawsuit against Apple with regards to off the clock wait time. The employees won.
I think you have a good case to sue the airlines.
How is it not illegal to require someone to work before their shift starts?! If you have to be there and be clocked in you should be getting paid. Period.
Pay starts when I clock in period. Wtf airlines. This goes for when work stops too, when I clock out. Period.
Pilots don't start getting paid until you release the breaks on the pushback (literally right before pushing out of the gate). LOTS of unpaid labor going on in this industry unfortunately.
Mind blowing. I had no idea at all. I don’t understand how all of you flight attendants can stand being so patient and nice with all the passengers when you are treated like that. Phenomenal injustice. Nobody in any job should be paid under those rules.
Yeah, I thought they just got the gears from terrible customers. That is suckier than 4 jet engines on afterburner.
Some airlines now pay a boarding fee. The pandemic has shown that people have other working options.
Holy shit. If someone needs to be at a specific place at a specific time, that's when they should start getting paid.
Please don't leave this guy hanging if he loses his job after this video.
This shit is insane.
Profiling different industries is a good idea for showing the whole picture of how rough workers have it in this economy.
I support a universal basic income, slashing the military and drug war budget and giving the money back to taxpayers, supporting unions, going after corporations for wage theft, robust food stamps programs, subsidized community college, grants for small businesses in working class areas, way better affordable housing programs, etc.- things that make a more fair economic system. "Economic mobility," i.e. rising up in social class, is insanely difficult in today's economy, both in the U.S. and in Europe.
Life has intrinsic value, and our lives are all deeply interconnected. An injury to one is an injury to all. It doesn't benefit the collective interest to have such a high percentage of our population working such long hours that they don't have time for family, community, hobbies, intellectual pursuits, etc. We need to start thinking more empathetically. The introduction of MDMA to the mainstream will help a lot with that, as it fosters empathy, but we can't wait for that.
WTF? You aren’t paid for waiting an hour? Total bullshit
Alot corporations steal from their employees. It's common in the U.S.
Sounds a lot like trucking. 😡
F**k the airlines. Sorry you guys gotta deal with this.
Absolutely sickening that pilots and other airline staff have to endure this every day. I can't imagine sleeping two hours and then have to fly hundreds of people each day.
This needs to change!
"That felt like a longer day than it actually was."
That's because when you document what your day is like, you realize how EFFED UP certain things are. Usually, you're just on autopilot (no pun intended) and you don't really think about all of it all that much, because you're that busy/that exhausted.
I hope you get what you and your colleagues are due!
In solidarity ❤
Can you get American Airlines to pay or reimburse for hotel expenses and meals at the Airports!!!!! You should be paid well like the Airline pilots!
Most of you do a awesome job. And you deserve to get paid from the moment you show at the airport until, you go home ( when ever and where ever that is)
With all the nonsense flight attendants put up with from unruly passengers they deserve not only to be paid for all hours worked but massive raises too. Just gross what businesses are allowed to get away with. They should never have more rights and protections than human beings.
The payment structure for flight attendants is complete BS and they need to demand change.
The only bummer if it does change to more fair compensation would be the companies raising prices for consumers instead of taking the hit like they should. But that shouldn't change the fact that flight attendants need to be strike ready!
As a union member, I will support you!
American (Dallas) and Delta (Atlanta) busted the unions back when NWA was biught iut. Most mechanics quit at NWA, deregulation in was the worst thing to ever happen to the airline industry
Deregulation has resulted in the public paying 1/2 to 1/3 what they did prior.
You're welcome to pay for first class seats, so why don't you?
Eastern baggage handlers were making $200K plus adjusted for inflation.
You will to pay that due to price fixing, legalized collusion prior to deregulation?
The media talks about shoplifters but ignore this even though this is literally theft, it's wage theft, and the money lost front wage theft is many many times more than what's lost from shoplifting.
This should not be legal, union or not, not getting paid for work should be illegal.
This made me hate airline companies more and i genuinely did not think it possible.
So basically half your day you get robbed of your salary.
Wow 😳
This HAS TO CHANGE!!
In solidarity with all Workers ❤️
I used to work as an auditor and we would be on the road for usually 11-13 hours but maybe more. Usually 6-8 were paid and the rest was less than half that "by mile". Many jobs that require travel use the inconsistent times as an excuse to not pay
If you are required to be there you should be getting paid!
Derek: This is how my job is crappy.
Me: he's a snack and a half.😍
Derek: half a snack is how much the little time and money my job gives me allows me to enjoy.
I’ve been thinking of being a flight attendant, but it would be so far out of my way, I’d be paying just to go to work, not to mention that they refuse to give their workers a livable wage. So, I guess I shall keep looking
😱😱😱😱 that’s ridiculous! An hour before and if there’s a delay you’re just volunteering your time??? That’s wild! Should be salary this is nuts
This is very true!
Thanks for this vlog. Fly and stay safe. Have an amazing week. Cheers.
This is real as we (ordinary Americans cs we cannot afford private jets) need to support these unions! Support means not giving to go fund me campaigns - it means the influencers on social platforms need to blast out to their followers on this and other US based airlines grievances! Do it!
Based on my casual observation, the boarding process is a lot of work for the attendants. How is it ok for them to not be paid for it?
What in the actual hell! I can't believe you guys haven't done something about this a long time ago. Time is money. They want you there at a certain time. They have to pay you for that time. I can't believe they have gotten away with doing this to you all for this long. Wow. These people are nuts. Every corporate business has gotten so GREEEDY. It's insane. They don't deserve to be business people. The wrong people in this life run businesses and make millions. You should be reimbursed for all those hours. This has to be illegal. The airports are always getting government bailouts too. I can't believe they aren't forced to pay you what you deserve. What you actually work in hours. This is effin bull. No discounts on food either. Yeah they are screwing all you guys. You put your lives in danger and this is the thanks you get? Screw them.
How is it not illegal to just not pay your employees when they require you to be there by a certain time and to still fulfill your tasks?
They get around it by paying a fixed base salary and adding flying pay as a sort of bonus on top. It's a total scam of course as the base salary is a pittance and the bulk of the pay check comes from the flying pay.

I can't encourage everyone enough: track your time. Not only the time you're AT work, but the time you devote to work -- commute, time preparing for work, time you wouldn't otherwise be spending on work if you didn't have a job -- and factoring that into your wages. I officially make "$22/hr," but, factoring time and expenses devoted TO work in, I make less than $16/hr, a $6 difference. Had the pay rate been advertised as $16/hr, I wouldn't have taken the job in the first place.
So, what?

Nope.
Most airports have an employee cafeteria, fair prices for quality food.

They need to redesign airplanes to include some washer/dryer - in - one units , more rest areas for crew , definitely more food / drink options.

The bad news is , to have the kind of plane both crew , and passengers , would be truly happy with now would probably mean dropping a fully constructed , next generation plane right outside the headquarters of the manufacturers...
Wage theft is the most common crime committed in America. Not robbery, not drug charges, not domestic abuse…Wage theft.
Not getting paid for boarding is not a new concept. When I was flying 20 years ago it was the norm. In recent years flight attendant groups have started to demand this in contract negotiations. Delta flight attendants now get boarding pay, so I think other airlines will have to follow Delta's lead because they will be forced to.
I would absolutely not board a plane if there were no flight attendants. They actually give flights a sense of structure, safety, and security.

Workers everywhere must unite.
This is not entirely true. They are paid per diem, so while they aren’t paid hourly until the doors are armed, they are still being paid for the day for showing up.
The struggles with being required to show up before you've started getting paid reminds me of my situation as an elementary school teacher in a large urban school district in the midwest US. Our contracted work day starts at 8:25 and ends at 4:15, but the students are in the building at 8:35 and after school dismissal has some kids at school until after 4:15 many days. So any preparation you need to do before the school day starts or after it ends (god forbid needing to check your mailbox in the office, talking to other staff about work related things, preparing materials, reading emails, contacting parents, etc) pretty much has to be completed while you're not being paid. Don't even get me started on the 3-5 hours of planning/grading that must be done every weekend or one/two late nights per week. Our union had negotiations last year and the district flat out refused to even consider giving elementary teachers more planning time or changing contract hours.
I’d like to see a deep dive into Housing Authorities. I have information to share as a tenant. I think it would be great timing as we are in this housing crisis.
What does their union say about this?! How about a strike?
That’s insane. I hope they unionize soon.
SUPPORT ALL UNIONS EXCEPT COPS.
I don't understand why people do this? I would not work in a field that didn't pay!
Seeing these things across the board in the American workplace makes me realize the real reason America is afraid of the idea of Universal Basic Income is because then all of these exploited workers would kick these companies to the curb and they would either be forced to give reasonable jobs or go out of business entirely. Somebody's gotta do the work, and when no one wants to work for you your company tanks. The only way they get away with this stuff is knowing there's a massive struggling working class in the country who are willing to do anything just to stay afloat.
Our current culture and country is going to be disgusting to the future of humanity if we ever reach post-scarcity.
