  • Recently watched Steve Benway struggle through Space Ace on the Atari Jaguar CD and it made me think, surely the game is not THAT hard, is it?

This is awesome! When I was a kid, 7-8ish, my Dad worked next to an Arcade in the mall and would sometimes take me with on the weekends. I was fascinated with Space Ace and obsessed with seeing the entire animation play out. So I played it... a lot. I actually got so good, the Arcade employees would sometimes pop for a credit just to watch me play it on the hardest setting beginning to end, on a single Ace. It's purely a game of memorization and timing, so once you know it, you kinda know it. Good stuff!

I'm jealous Bjorn, that bit in my video is honestly about as far as I can get in the game, super challenging!

I love this kind of history. I was born in 1976 in Málaga (south of Spain) I played Space Ace in a big Arcade Saloon in my neigbourgh (called Malagueta). The top Score I was got, it was when my mother bought to me a sandwich while I playing Space Ace and I died in motorcycle scene xD.
Now there aren't any arcade saloon there :(

@@saitama3135 Sadly all arcades have gone away. But I was in Malaga in 1988, who knows? We may have walked right past each other. :)

Space Ace and all of the Cinematronics games were ahead of their time in the 1980s. It's as much as learning the patterns as the timing of the moves. Dragon's Lair II is definitely the hardest, with Space Ace being the next, and Dragon's Lair being the easiest. The most forgiving version is the one sold on the Steam platform using an X Box controller on PC. New Wave Toys just released a 1/6th scale, 12" Barbie doll sized Replicade cabinet, and have a few left if you enjoy collectibles! 😉👍

I have a couple of those New Wave Toys myself: Asteroids and Tempest. They're amazing! I hope they release more that interest me cuz the quality is great.

I thought dragon lair was harder than space ace. Cliff hanger being the hardest

I love Cliff Hanger. Got it running on Daphne and it kicks my butt however I enjoy it for the memories.

Quality controls are big factor. Especially with an 8 way gate versus a 4 way

Good point. I see New Wave Toys are going to make Space Ace as part of their Replicade series on mini-cabinets. It'll be interesting to see how well those sell since a lot of people consider Space Ace impossible to play.

@@DowntheRabbitHole0 Just got mine a couple weeks ago. It's fantastic. I got the dedicated cab. Tbh, they're not really practical for actual play. They're more of a display piece. You can connect it to an HDTV via HDMI and plug in a gamepad via USB it's not ideal.

The arcade cabinet had TWO volume controls. one for music and one for sound effects. Can we get them separeted?

We had this game in the arcade but I never played it. I was a little bit scared by it I think. And where a normal game cost 1 guilder, these games cost 2,50 for a game. A little bit too expensive to be popping coins at that rate!

I hear ya Wouter, this one was 50 cents for us in Canada and that's a lot to be throwing away at the level of frustration some players were getting (like poor Steve)

I've never played a laser disc game, I don't think they existed where I live though. I do remember seeing Dragon's Lair a lot on tv shows and the like but my first real venture into this type of game was "Avenger" or something on the Sega CD that my neighbour had as we couldn't afford that system at the time. Anyway great that you got as far as you did and hopefully I can get the daphne emulator installed at some point and give these games a go. Hope life is treating you well Kev.

The problem is its so fast like DL2 & most of the screens dont repeat so its hard to learn them
