MRT Petchaburi, ARL Makkasan, SRT Asoke Halt. To get to Asoke BTS you need to take the MRT one stop to Sukhumvit Station, which is next to asoke BTS. Confused?
I'll just stick with the airport express to Makkasan MRT Sukhumvit/Asoke then a stroll from there, I don't bring hold bags. Tho it's a great backpacker intro. Agreed!
Tip: If you are hungry or thirsty inside of BKK airport, take the escalator down to the second floor. It's casual food court (need Thai currency) You are able to eat lunch/dinner for 60-80 baht with 20-40 baht drinks. The same floor has bus kiosk going to Jomtien Beach as well for 151 baht I believe.
Is that the one at the end of the airport where the staff eat? And you have to go into the kiosk and buy the vouchers? I thought that was on the ground floor as you walk out to the buses???
@@BangkokPat that's what I think Pat, always difficult to know what floor you're on in Suvarnabhumi. I've eaten in there lots of times, a little intimidating for somebody that doesn't speak or read Thai
Depending on how much luggage you have, switching to the MRT at Makkasan for 1 stop to Sukhumvit can be easier than going all the way to Phaya Thai on the ARL if you're staying around lower Sukhumvit. If you're staying in upper Sukhumvit, Ramkamhaeng station will bring you out around Phra Kanong Soi 71.

Another great video Pat. I recently travelled on the Airport Link from Lad Krabang to Maakasan. I saw two young European girls looking a little lost. They'd just arrived from Germany and were travelling before starting uni, back in Germany. They wanted to go to Klong Toei but wanted to save money by taking the bus! I took them down to the MRT and bought them two tickets to Klong Toei, for their safety as much as anything else.
I've been living here in Bangkok for six years now. Never been on a train like that nor a bus.. Maybe one day I'll do it, thanks for the inspiration 😁 and a great video as well.
Can’t see my wife doing this Oat after 12 hours in a plane but I am tempted to do it in reverse one afternoon as the bus ride and train ride look really good. . I need to explore the airport more as I didn’t know the train line was only one stop away … great idea doing this vlog 🥃
Years ago there used to be special buses from the airport that would take you various parts of Bangkok including Sukhamvit Road. The buses went from the ground floor next to the food court, tickets were cheap as well. I remember it would drop you off anywhere on Sukhamvit Road you required , brilliant ! A lot less hassle than changing 3 times on the BTS transit system.
Great video, coming back after 35 months in January melb phuket rtn £195. Bargin. No ' cats ' in this video but you did mention them Mr Pat. This was more interesting than it should have been. I love slow, cheap travel. You can put up with almost anything if the price is right. Lol.

I even buy all my stuff rather in bangkok than here…not because the prices are cheaper (no they are not (mostly)). Walking in the rain with an umbrella like an old victorian gentleman, listening to scooter engines (they calm me down), eat some papaya, play pool with some strangers who share common interests… If I could, I would instantly migrate to Bangkok…learn the language, learn some local habits and stuff. Perhaps future home-office rules can make it possible to stay at least 2-3 month there…who knows.
Going shopping today at noon. Funny i was at the airport a little after you made your video. Was 11pm . The 3 flies were smooth the food was great, but its hard to sit like 20 plus hours.
Another great and helpful video, thank you, Pat!🙏❤️ Never used trains during 12 years of living in bkk... Would be very interesting to find out more secrets about similar ways to Pattaya or Huahin, something for weekend escape😊
5:17 yes sir traveling through Thailand in 3rd class train is an incredible experience... torrid, butt glued to the greenish seats, vendors walking up and down shouting their chorus (which invariably ended with "Yee sip baht" 20 baht), Thai people, students, monks... such great memories... Bangkok's railway link was my first ride... thank you for your videos sir 🙏
Thanks for the effort and inspiration Pat. Didn’t know that local train station. Respect man! I might try that one day. Till then I will take the airport rail link right to Makkasan station and then catch a cab or walk the rest. Especially if I have a heavy suitcase. Never mind the rain. Cheers 🍺
Thanks pat might make more sense to take that route on short flights around Asia. On my usual around 24 hours of travel from USA I will stick with the airport connector to the sky train.
If it wasn't raining and if you don't have too much luggage, the distance from Asok Station/Makkasan to Sukhumvit is walkable. Takes about 20-30 minutes. Have done that a few times. And it will save you a few baht more.
It’s about an hour to Nana if you take the airport line to the end at Phaya Thai, then change over to the green Sukhumvit line towards Kheha, and you will be at Nana before you know it, one stop from Asoke.
Watching this and thinking 'Yeah, I could do this on my upcoming visit, save myself some beer tokens' I just know though after landing off that long haul flight the first thought will be TAXI! I'm lucky I can string a sentence together at that point. I'll try and compromise and take the rail link to Phayathai and then BTS to Ari, nearly as cheap as this method. Great vid as always Pat!
Best when you're young, healthy, single, and pack light for travel. That was me 35 years ago on my first trip to Thailand. Nevertheless, I'd love to try this just for the video/photo opportunities on the train leg. However, now my Thai wife and I being in our 60s.... she'd kill me. 😄
Awesome video and great advice! In 2008, I took an employee bus from BKK to a bus station near BKK. It only cost me 9 Baht to go to an area near Patpong. It was my first time in Thailand and I learned about it in Lonley Planet. It's about 35 Baht now!
A fun way to travel, using three forms of transport, but not when you have luggage! The ARL to Makkasan, and MRT from Phetchaburi to Sukhumvit would cost not much more (35 + 16 = 51bahts), and without the hassle of waiting for the irregular SRT train and the risk of missing the Asoke Halt stop which has no station building. Do it only if you have time to kill, and no luggage!
We always stay in the Old City area and I just get a taxi at the airport taxi line. 600 Baht or so and I usually give a 200 Baht tip. The drivers are always nice, and we have good conversations. Point A to point B for a comfortable ride after long flights.
My first trip to Bangkok in 2013 I learned online that I could go to the lowest floor of the airport, catch the express train (no longer in service I think) to Makkasan station, then down the stairs to the MRT, and one stop to Asoke. About 1/2 hour, and under $2. Done that trip (except now city train) both ways many times.
I arrived in bkk on Saturday morning Was off the plane , through immigration and arrive at my sukhumvit hotel within 45 minutes. Flying business gets you fast track immigration. BTS great during rush hour traffics into or out of bak
Beware time of day. Bangkok traffic can still be hell on earth in peak hour and before long weekends. The airport rail link to Phaya Tai plus BTS SkyTrain to Nana is a great way to arrive and avoids the nightmare traffic down below with a great view of the city.
Great video Pat .... but you know what it is like when you first arrive in a new country, you are jet lagged, disorientated, you can’t read the signage which is all in Thai along the local routes, the entrance for the railway station is a classic side door and then if you got on the wrong train by mistake, you would probably have to get a taxi from where ever you ended up.. … I think I would have to just catch a cab until I got my bearings.
You must mean Don Muang! The secret side door to the train station! Doing that trip in this video while jetlagged and disorientated with heavy luggage is not advised...

i love the train been using since it opened only problem is last train is 12:00am and most of my flights arrive 23:00-00:00 so i either get the last train or miss it. then its back to the lovely taxi guys
Or you can just pay 45 baht and stay on the Airport Express until Paya Thai then take the BTS (platform 1) to Nana for 20 baht or so. That will take 40 min. But this was a nice adventure.
Good to see how it works the cheap way! I prefer with my luggage after an 11 hours exhausting flight the taxi to the city. But when i fly back home always the airport Rail Link.
A very utilitarian video for the ambitious traveler, however I think I'll recommend anyone just arriving in BKK just take a taxi an overlook this very ambitious, but not worthwhile trip. Just one man's opinion. Be well Pat!
I thought that was fantastic video , did not know there was another train line like that . Only one problem is if you have baggage with you .Hauling a big heavy suitcase down those stairs and into the train looks like very difficult work . It's a good idea if you only have a backpack . other wise the airport line to the bts is the way to go .
Nice video Pat. Informative, I use ARL right to Makkasan, down to the MRT to Sukhumvit then to BTS to Nana station. your way is cheaper though by a few Baht, enjoy your beer.
Great video, I used to do something similar from Don Mueang back in the day. Train all the way to Hualmaphong. :-) 12 baht or something. But it was slooooow.
Or for $2.26 (45+37= THB82) you could take the ARL + BTS from the Airport to Asoke BTS station via Phayathai ARL & BTS stations. Very convenient if you have luggage. Or for slightly cheaper at $1.40 (35+16=THB51) but more sweaty, with longer distances lugging baggage around between train stations you could take the ARL to Makkasan and traipse down to the MRT Petchburi station for one stop to the MRT Sukhumvit Station at Asoke.
@@BangkokPat You absolutely right, this video just let traveller knows use minimum $ to travel from airport to city, not suit everybody, if family of 4 not even thank about catch train to city.
Pat, The stair for the crossover bridge is there on the left 9:33 you're not supposed to cross there on the road and the bridge is just running above your head.
Don't know if you can do it under a dollar but how about... Airport Link train to Khlong Tan Short 250 metre walk to Charn Issara Pier Khlong boat along Saen Saep to Panfa Leelard Pier (these boats are an adventure in themselves) Final half kilometer to Khao San Rd either walking, red bus or motorcycle taxi.
Fun video Pat but not for me at 56 y.o., I know myself too well I'd be a grumpy you know what by the time I finally made it to my hotel. Back when I was a young man and had more time than money then definitely would have.
I look at the taxi queue, then head to the rail link. I must admit it never occurred to me before to head up to departures and ‘steal’ a cab that’s just dropped off! And as someone else commented on this route. So it’s Makkasan, walk to Phetchaburi, which takes you to Terminal 21. I’m sure I didn’t spend much more than an English Pound too.
I've taken the airport link since it began but never thought of the dollar route because the expedience of getting to my Hotel was my goal. Yet the cheap bastard I am likes your thinking, thanks Pat. 🤑
Great Stuff, Stayed One Night at Lat Krabang as I was Offloaded from a Flight back to Oz. Food was Ok from a Street Vendor and One Restaurant I ate at, nice Chinese Food, but pretty quiet area.
I cannot believe you did that trip as cheaply as you did! While it’s not the only way to do it, it sure as hell is the cheapest that doesn’t involve executive hand relief for the cab driver! Well done, mate…hang on, I’m complimenting you on the video and I’m completely forgetting the “Miracle on asphalt” known as crossing at the level crossing before you got on the bus! Freaking amazing! I’m in the Big Mango for a very long while from October 6th on, first Leo is on me.
Got the airport link last night, dropped my son off for his flight back to London. Caught the link down to Makkasan, then through to watch Port FC play. Cheapest airport link I've ever been on. You should do a feature on Port FC in the heart of working class Bangkok.
If you end up traveling the world looking for cats and history, keep this on your visit list: Al Jaddaf dry docks in Dubai. You can explore the Dubai metro; there's a station nearby.
It’s always the Rail link to Phaya Thai for me and I’m back here finally after the scamdemic 😂. Still 45 baht as of last week as it was in 2012! I then jump on the BTS
Unless your Thai GF's family give you a free lift. But then they might want to see you off and your lovely GF suggests having a meal for everyone while you wait for your flight, at your expense of course. I learned long ago that the Airport Link train or even a taxi is much cheaper than a free ride from family. 😊
This is a brilliant upload! Buses, trains & planes.... what's not to like?..... lol How old are those buses? They look interesting especially with that wooden floor. The whole trip for 29bht, that's 75p in UK money, just less than half the fare for one London bus ride...... I have made several rail journeys in Thailand, i found the Mae Klong line to be the most rickerty, at times i thought we were going to come off the track even though we were only doing around 25mph.......
In and out of Bangkok 30+ years. Never got used to beer with ice. So no warm beer... and no beer "chilled" with ice. Quite simple really - cold beer or bust.
Wow, I definitely need to try this route not just for saving money be it more of an adventure love Thai trains, so much better then United Kingdom, Trians and services shocking here, I remember traveling from Bangkok to Khon Kean over night it was brill than Khon Kean to Nong KHAI great experience. ICE in beer is definitely a no no, but then again not a fan of Thai beer been totally spoilt living in Yorkshire to many great breweries, However they're some fantastic small craft breweries in Thailand but due the crazy Thai laws so expensive, which is shame Thailand should capitalise on the craft beer market... no ice needed just great beer 555
Thanks for the video, Pat. But if you don’t want to shuffle around between trains & Buses, spend a little bit more ( like approx an extra $.120 more) take the airport link all the way to the end of the line to Phaya Thai, change over to the Sukhumvit line ( green line) towards Kheha and you should get to Nana BTS in about an hour...
I've certainly done MRT+ARL on the way back, partly as a cheap charlie, but usually when I have time to blow between check out and flight, this seems a step too far though
Informative and entertaining video as always Pat. Can you take cats with you as comfort animals on the train and buses in Bangkok? If so is there a cat limit per person? Thanks!
@@dexterford8094 That's such a relief. I have a sled team of 12 cats that get me down the sois. They are faster and safer than motorbike taxis... usually. It is a cruel world for buffalos. I'm surprised there aren't hordes of ghost buffalos terrorising people from the other side.
I got abused years ago by the ticket seller on that airport train, they didn't like farangs on the train,it was only for locals and airport workers.I asked him in Thai how much , and he said 35 baht, I counted out the correct change, and he gave me the ticket in disgust and stormed off. The rest of the Thais on board were all silent and watching, then suddenly they all cheered and clapped for me.
Whilst I always try to avoid using the airport taxis in favour of the airport link line to Makkasan, I think I'll avoid this more adventurous route because I wouldn't want to look back on it as the time I travelled for under a dollar but caught pneumonia...

i love the train been using since it opened only problem is last train is 12:00am and most of my flights arrive 23:00-00:00 so i either get the last train or miss it. then its back to the lovely taxi guys
Or you can just pay 45 baht and stay on the Airport Express until Paya Thai then take the BTS (platform 1) to Nana for 20 baht or so. That will take 40 min. But this was a nice adventure.
Thanks!
Thank you very much Max, appreciate your support mate.
2,108 baht will pay for 72 of these trips. 🤣😂🤣
@@dexterford8094 Cheers, never thought of it like that Dexter.
Great timing on this one!
Thanks Pat. I think I'll give that a go in December. Great video.
9:48....and looking for ghost stories. But no, you're Bangkok Pat & we need you there 😊
Good to see how it works the cheap way! I prefer with my luggage after an 11 hours exhausting flight the taxi to the city. But when i fly back home always the airport Rail Link.
Great adventure Pat. Love the local trains - get to meet local people and see local places.
A very utilitarian video for the ambitious traveler, however I think I'll recommend anyone just arriving in BKK just take a taxi an overlook this very ambitious, but not worthwhile trip.
Just one man's opinion. Be well Pat!
After flying long haul, who in their right mind wants to do this trip to save a dollar????
Heading from California to BKK in 7 weeks. Hope to connect then Pat.
Love that saxophone. In the music of course.
I used to always take the first train of the day from Suvarnabhumi to Hua Lamphong and then go from there. I'm gonna miss that train station
It's not closing anymore, not for the next few years anyway. Change of plan and also its history and heritage.
@@BangkokPat Yay!!! 🥰
As always a great and informative video, thanks Pat!
Good stuff, quite an adventure!
A fun video thanks!
Thanks, it's really suited for those with backpacks or hand luggage. But I did mention that at the start of the video!
I take airport link to Makkasan and canal boat combo for similar price, and awesome journey. and likely lots faster.
Nice video Pat. Informative, I use ARL right to Makkasan, down to the MRT to Sukhumvit then to BTS to Nana station.
your way is cheaper though by a few Baht, enjoy your beer.
Cheers Kevin.
The point is, this video shows how to do it for 29 baht
@@BangkokPat and a lot more expended in blood, sweat and tears... but admittedly a good yarn to tell at the end of it all....
I like this way and its more convenient if you have a suitcase to lug around and aircon all the way
@@BangkokPat That is correct Pat
@@BangkokPat You absolutely right, this video just let traveller knows use minimum $ to travel from airport to city, not suit everybody, if family of 4 not even thank about catch train to city.
Pat, The stair for the crossover bridge is there on the left 9:33 you're not supposed to cross there on the road and the bridge is just running above your head.
Thanks again Pat.I really miss Bangkok.
I could imagine airport to Khao San road for under a dollar would attract more viewers and could be a real hit. :-)
It will be and l will do it this week! Thanks Jo
Yea, id be up for that as i have to do it next week! 👍
My home is near Khao San Road. Normally i would use S1 BUS 60 Bath (1.60 USD) . Bus is at 1st Floor Gate 7 . every 15 Mins (From Suvannavhumi Airport)
Don't know if you can do it under a dollar but how about...
Airport Link train to Khlong Tan
Short 250 metre walk to Charn Issara Pier
Khlong boat along Saen Saep to Panfa Leelard Pier (these boats are an adventure in themselves)
Final half kilometer to Khao San Rd either walking, red bus or motorcycle taxi.
You can from Don Meung for 30 bht - A4 bus to Khao San. But I don't think BKK has 'A' buses
Excellent! Can you do Dong Muang?!
2 connections on public transit: Airport Link to Makkasan, MRT to Bang Sue, SRT Red Line to Don Mueang.
You mean from Don Muang to Sukhumvit? It can be done for under a dollar sure.
Looks like fun, but sadly we always travel with far too much luggage for such an adventure.
Fun video Pat but not for me at 56 y.o., I know myself too well I'd be a grumpy you know what by the time I finally made it to my hotel. Back when I was a young man and had more time than money then definitely would have.
You deserve at least 100K subs, asap..
Best channel about Thailand on utube! 🇹🇭🙏☔🐈
Nice one Pat.Thanks.
I've taken the airport link since it began but never thought of the dollar route because the expedience of getting to my Hotel was my goal. Yet the cheap bastard I am likes your thinking, thanks Pat. 🤑
I am providing an option for the budget travellers. Should be a hit with backpackers but l don't see many of them going to Sukhumvit!
I live in Miami, Florida. I LOVE public transportation here as well, it’s so much cheaper and relaxing!
If you end up traveling the world looking for cats and history, keep this on your visit list: Al Jaddaf dry docks in Dubai. You can explore the Dubai metro; there's a station nearby.
But the big question is, are there cats around there?
@@BangkokPat last time I counted there were over 400. One guy goes feeding them 3 times a week along with a few volunteers.
It’s always the Rail link to Phaya Thai for me and I’m back here finally after the scamdemic 😂. Still 45 baht as of last week as it was in 2012! I then jump on the BTS
That's the regular boring route!!!
This is the "Scenic Route" for people that aren't in a hurry or pressed for time. Can't beat the price 😂🤣😉😎.
Unless your Thai GF's family give you a free lift. But then they might want to see you off and your lovely GF suggests having a meal for everyone while you wait for your flight, at your expense of course. I learned long ago that the Airport Link train or even a taxi is much cheaper than a free ride from family. 😊
Thanks Pat great video very helpful
This is a brilliant upload! Buses, trains & planes.... what's not to like?..... lol How old are those buses? They look interesting especially with that wooden floor. The whole trip for 29bht, that's 75p in UK money, just less than half the fare for one London bus ride...... I have made several rail journeys in Thailand, i found the Mae Klong line to be the most rickerty, at times i thought we were going to come off the track even though we were only doing around 25mph.......
Interesting way to commute from the AirPort. Bangkok offers unlimited opportunities for adventure, though it does take a toll on you sometimes😬
Love your sense of humour…..same as mine:)
That’s my plan when I go in Oct
Best channel on Bangkok
I've certainly done MRT+ARL on the way back, partly as a cheap charlie, but usually when I have time to blow between check out and flight, this seems a step too far though
That takes ages, just get a bus to lad prao rd. And there get an airport bus, it’s airconditioned, 50 baht
The focus here isn't alternative or faster routes but getting between the two places for less than a dollar.
Great video, Pat. How long did the trip actually take?
3 days
The wooden floor on the bus lol
Informative and entertaining video as always Pat.
Can you take cats with you as comfort animals on the train and buses in Bangkok? If so is there a cat limit per person? Thanks!
I am sure cats would be no problem, but have it in a bag or box when you get on!
Up to twelve cats are allowed but you need to show your Cat Lady License to carry more than 3.
Buffalos, even sick ones, are not allowed.
😛😜😝
@@dexterford8094 That's such a relief. I have a sled team of 12 cats that get me down the sois. They are faster and safer than motorbike taxis... usually.
It is a cruel world for buffalos. I'm surprised there aren't hordes of ghost buffalos terrorising people from the other side.
@@dexterford8094 Lady license? You mean I gotta dress up to take a few cats on the bus?
@@BangkokPat ... Not Lady license... CAT Lady License. Important distinction. ☺
Hi Pat , thank you. But where exactly did you get down on sukhumvit? thanks again for the vdo.
Asok intersection
Whilst I always try to avoid using the airport taxis in favour of the airport link line to Makkasan, I think I'll avoid this more adventurous route because I wouldn't want to look back on it as the time I travelled for under a dollar but caught pneumonia...
Saved cash? Got Pneumonia? I fail to see the connection Andrew!
@@BangkokPat Standing waiting for a bus in the rain...
@@andrewmack2161 ... I have been soaked in Bangkok rain a number of times. Since the rain is quite warm I never had problems with pneumonia. 🥵
@@dexterford8094 So have i. It was a mildly humorous comment... yes, only mildly.
