      No one is saying CGI didn't already exist. It is the marriage of CGI and the hand drawn style that is so unique. They reap the benefits of 3D animation's ease of creating more dynamic camera angles while maintaining the hand drawn art style.
      Most CGI animation has a different look distinguishing it from hand drawn (plastic like, I never cared for it). It is at least a very different style that is immediately recognizable as being done via computers. Tarzan looks like a traditional painting come to life.
      Ahead of its time is probably not the right phrase though, unless they revive this method in the future. It wasn't used much afterwards and Disney has dropped hand drawn styles in favor of the more plastic Pixar style.
      The Paperman short is another variant of this kind of tech geared towards the characters instead of scenery, though unfortunately the Disney executives don't seem interested in pursuing these techniques for their feature films (just letting their animators play around and experiment with it for smaller projects).

    I've had the extreme pleasure to attend a conference with Glen Keane.
    I'll always remember, how nice and brilliant he is. And also when he explained, he didn't find the right way to animate Tarzan...until he saw kids, sliding on skate boards and roller bladers...and then, he told us, he's been watching hours of videos with surfers, skateboarders and roller bladers, in order to understand their specific moves and catch it. That's why Tarzan is sliding on tree branches.
    It's so simple and magic :)

    For those asking, this type of effect is still possible (maybe moreso now than ever before). If you complete your modeling and finalize your camera you should have a good idea of lighting. Ideally your background plate that you use to inform the scene is already complete, and you can use that as a base.
    Load your assets into a coloring package such as Zbrush, Substance Painter or Mudbox and then paint on flat diffuse shaders. The reason why is because in Tarzan that's typically how they achieved the shading they did on the trees in Deep Canvas.
    And then you'd export your maps (probably in 8k for a cinematic production) and then load them into your scene (probably in Maya) for rendering. You'd render your scene and composite your Traditional animation assets over the top (here it would be the leaves and particles as Tarzan touches the trees and surfs on the trunks).
    And finally you'd add the additional shading over the top.
    So, for example, that would usually be done on a separate layer in After Effects (or Photoshop if you're interested in a lot of extra work), and you'd render the full scene to be exported to your editing software.
    The pipeline is a lot faster this way, as fewer technicians are required to make sure the scene looks the way it should. An art Supervisor would be able to simply say, "Change the lighting here." or "Brighten up this spot here" and you'd just edit the maps again.
    Sadly, nobody in Hollywood is even attempting this anymore. Everyone thinks harder is smarter.

      To be fair:
      Those were awful Character Designs, Kliche & poor written Story-Line, awful concept artwork, plus stupid non-sensical World-Building, merged all together.
      That's why Disney let it flop.

    • @jeromyperez5532
      @jeromyperez5532 7 років тому +32

      Treasure Planet was victim of a poor release window. The main reason people didn't go to see it in theaters despite warm critical reception and even earning an Oscar nod, was because they wanted to wait for it to come out on DVD in a couple of months as was Disney's winter release window.
      It was a summer movie released in the winter.
      I don't think any of your points are fair, Katiana. Maybe you didn't like it, which is fine. But to say that objectively, the story was cliche and poorly written is banal. And concept art is totally separate from the final product.
      Disney didn't let it flop because they thought it was bad. The Force Awakens was bad. Disney doesn't care if it's bad. They wanted it to fail to justify the transition to exclusively 3D pictures.
      2D pictures can make money, that's what kept Disney going in the 80's and 90's and launched them as a company. But audiences need to be made interested in the product before they'll buy it. And Disney didn't do their share.

    • @katianamonero4820
      @katianamonero4820 7 років тому +2

      True to all that.
      It was autosabotaged for the release & the part of Disney doesn't care about quality, but money.

      You can achieve it at least partially in Blender. With 2 missing pieces: painting strokes, extrapolating texture based on existing texture painting.
      You can overcome both. Instead of painting strokes for leafs, you can just position them manually or through particle system, and then paint over.
      As for branches, use diffuse shader with shading disabled and paint over your texture.
      In the end, render blender animation and then compose it either in blender compose or after effects with your 2d animation.
