I had 4 different 5 series and I’m on my 8th BWM car now. They lost me with this car and overall with the software. Bmw was always good with tech, but with the current iDrive version it’s like you are an iPhone owner switching to Droid system. Why so many apps? Why so complicated to do simple things ? And on top of it it’s not intuitive. My next car most likely is going to be a Tesla. Maybe I’ll loose some luxury, but the software combined with how well it’s integrated with a cellphone it’s top notch leaving Germans way behind. 2024 Tesla 3 is good enough for me and I’ll take the leftover change to buy myself another extra toy.
I am also annoyed by the raised floor in the rear. I sat in this and then a Tiguan. The difference is night and day and has made me realize what is most important for comfort: 1. Seating position and space. 2. Seat quality. 3. Sound insulation. 4. Ride quality. 5. Good view out. 6. No wallowing to avoid car sickness.
Why do all ev have to have no grille? They could still have a grille with a blank section behind that diverts all bugs to the ground. One trip to the country in summer and the front looks like a bug catcher.
It’s much, much easier to clean off bugs on a smooth flat surface than a grill. I was a car detailer and anything that had a grill or rough patches, were a bitch to clean. As opposed to let’s say a Prius. A good amount of cleaner, let it sit a few minutes come back and spray off. Use a sponge on anything that’s left over and I was done with the front of the car in 5 minutes while I got the back done waiting for the cleaner to do it’s thing. A whole car/truck that’s electric cuts about 5-10 minutes off of pre-cleaning!
It will be over 200k AUD - not bringing the 6 cyl and forcing ppl to get the 4 cyl, which is way underpowered for a car this size (just test a curent 520i and not to mention the sound) was a huge mistake imo. But since a model S is no longer available in Australia, the 540i could easily fill that void with better luxury and comfort.
Thanks for the review of the new BMW sedan. Negatives. Don't get too excited about 'the instrument panel'. It's effectively, three 'I pads' side by side. 2. At 3.04, A 2002 Hyundai Getz has flush Door Handles. Despite my negatives Matt, this i5 is a beautiful powerful car and is sure to sell well. Thanks for travelling to Germany for your review. 🙂
If you like that interior lighting, I guess you frequent the odd strip club ? After living with a new Mercedes for a year, tackiness gets old quickly. Impresses in the showroom but what value does it add ?

Car looks great, I'm a BMW iX and Audi e-tron owner in Sydney and definetly approve of this i5 coming at the end of the year.
As a bmw fanboy I am unable to express displeasure at any of their designs except the xm and the other electric ones

Which ever way you look at it, either front, sides, back or interior, from every angle it's like s**t.

They removed the ambient lighting in the back. It's a no for me.
