Princess Irulan Introduction - Dune (1984)

- A beginning is a very delicate time.
Know then that it is the year ten thousand and one, ninety one. The known universe is ruled by the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam the fourth, my father.
In this time the most precious substance in the universe is the Spice Melange. The Spice extends life, the Spice expands consciousness, the Spice is vital to space travel. The Spacing Guild and its Navigators who the Spice has mutated over four thousand years use the orange Spice gas, which gives them the ability to fold space, that is travel to any part of the universe without moving.
Oh yes, I forgot to tell you, the Spice exists on only one planet in the entire universe, a desolate, dry planet, with vast deserts. Hidden away within the rocks of these deserts are a people known as the Fremen, who have long held a prophecy that a man would come, a messiah, who would lead them to true freedom.
The planet is Arrakis, also known as Dune.
She is so beautiful! and nailed the role as Irulan.
Yeah, it's a bummer we didn't get to see her as Irulan in subsequent films and in raising the twins.
That’s Virginia Madsen’s character.
Yes she definitely is
Better than girl with the fat face who played her in the new version.
At around the same age as this was filmed she was in a film called electric dreams which is pretty hilarious, about a home computer becoming sentient after having a drink spilled on it. It plays a duet with her on the cello, worth a watch if you can find it.!
Fun fact: This and the ending are the only time the princess appears in the movie. Had a sequel based on Messiah happened, she would have had a larger role.
I guess she at least showed up in Dune 2
Didn't she show up in the beginning when the emperor tells her to leave?
"oh yes, I forgot to tell you" ....lol
I know right...
Whoever wrote had hopefully be run over by a truck we forgot to tell about, oh yes.
My favorite part
yo lemme fade back in here for a sec and tell you about the most important part
Yes....From that point on you knew you were in for a real winner of a screenplay! 😂😂😂🤮
"Oh yes, I forgot to tell you... " as it fades back in makes me laugh my ass off everytime I hear it.
🤣 Lynch's voice bubbling up through the adaptation...
"I forgot to tell you" was the 80s equivalent of "Somehow Palpatine returned."
@whitleypedia lol yeah its so out of place with the the rest of the tone, sometimes it feels like David Lynch is mocking the endeavor lol
Irulan, Princess of Exposition. Her father the Emperor in his first scene lays on an even bigger infodump when he talks to a Guild Navigator :)
"You may go, Bene Gesserit." *turns to guards* "She's a Bene Gesserit, you know."
And then when we finally cut to Kyle MacLachlan after 15 minutes, we get to watch him LISTEN TO MORE EXPOSITION!
I mean that's her role in the books too. And it's funny that other characters in-universe make fun of this fact too.
@@jacoblessing7929 Guard: Yes, we know but your wife is one, too. And we know how much you distrust that witch, too.
She did write a biography based on what happened in the movie.
"*fades out, then back in*...Oh yes, I forgot to tell you" 💀💀💀
Such a weird in line in an exposition dump
and she fades out and in once before that for... reasons
😂😂😂
@@LCTeslaThepost prod make was having a good fun by himself 😅😂😂😂 vanish and reappeared and... vanish again and oh no I forgot something 😅😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣
I’ve watched so much cinema, and still don’t Know why this intro is so fascinating. She’s extremely beautiful, yes, but theres’ s so much else... Must be the Lynch touch. And the music, of course.
Old comment but Lynch has a knack of casting beautiful women(twin peaks)
Definitely the music. Virginia Madsen is lovely
I'll always love this intro, not only 'cause of being a sci-fi classic but mostly because of Virginia Madsen's beauty and perfect lips
Diego Aguirre that's the only reason I went to go see this movie 4 times back then I literally caught the bus just to go to the theater which was the only 360° screen in Little Rock not a damn bowling ball Dome it's now been demolished
Diego Aguirre perfect face
I think I sat there with my mouth agape. I had never seen such a beauty in my life.
Now, there are many like her. But at the time? No one came close.
I love this opening too because she was so exquisitely gorgeous in this shot. Her later appearances don’t seem to match though probably because she hasn’t dressed or styled herself the same.
She is hardly in the film at all. In fact, I can't even remember her speaking in the film other than this opening monologue.
0:35 0:45 1:11 "Sorry, I was going through a tunnel."
Editor wasn’t sure if she was done yet but she kept going.
One of the greatest openings for one of the weirdest most mind-stretching SF films of all time.
Followed by Blade Runner then Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.1 & 2
Indeed... I can hardly imagine what Jodorowsky's Dune would of been like with Amanda Lear in this role. Just... Wow! I really hope that Denis Villeneuve's Dune will be the amazing, astonishing picture that I hope it will be. Its been a long, long time since we have had a truly ground breaking science fiction movie.
DUDE
is she talking about psilocybin or DMT?
Agreed. Intro is perfect.
The pumpkin spice expands consciousness.
Hello ancient one
@@donnyemig6001 Hello elder
For me, it’s the THC that does the trick!
At around the same age as this was filmed she was in a film called electric dreams which is pretty hilarious, about a home computer becoming sentient after having a drink spilled on it. It plays a duet with her on the cello, worth a watch if you can find it.!
Princess Irulan is 9999x times more precious than the sandworm sh- I mean the spice melange
This is the character that wrote a whole lotta books. Perfect choice for a narrator
This is the only movie where I was 100% paying attention to exposition dump at the beginning. God bless you, Virginia Madsen.
uhm... Lord of the Rings?
"The ability to fold space. That is, travel to any part of universe without moving."
It's so cool how she says that...
The role of spice in travel is almost entirely ignored by Villaneuve. Strange choice.
@@ThomB10313rd Movie will delve into that.
Still, makes completely irrelevant Paul's threat to destroy the spice.
Actually not a bad point@@ThomB1031
Oh wow... I had totally forgotten how great Virginia Madsen looked back in the day. Sweet...
Coolest intro to any movie I have ever seen. It surely helps to have the exceedingly beautiful Virginia do the talking....
She makes my sandworm rise.
looking at her makes me happy. God im weak
Virginia actually embodies the description of Irulan as written. A patrician beauty.
Man.. Virginia Madsen is a gorgeous woman! Her eyes! Do NOT try to tell me that Mua'D'ib didn't sneak up to her wing of the palace now and again when Chani wasn't lookin'...
He didn't. That was a major plot point, that Paul never banged her.
She wishes
They use the Holzman drive, that folds space at the quantum level.
At the prequel books (written by Herbert´s son, after his notes), it´s stated that supercomputers were used to find safe paths in folded space, but after the Butlerian Jihad and the prohibition of thinking machines, only 1 out of every 10 ships arrived in their destination when folding space. Norma Cenva (who invented the Holzman effect (he stole the credits) then discovers that spice gives her...
Astral Projection - Dancing Galaxy
Lucas Vander-Bartlett I was looking for someone who knows about this, I finally found that person! any other vocals that you don't know are from but want to know, you could reply to my reply and I may be able to tell you, there is no guarantee that I know it all because I haven't yet heard all of them. 😊

Fun fact: Dune takes place about 20,000 year into our future
Shes makin' my spice flow
SILENCE!!!!
😂
What did he mean by this?
⚠️Creep alert⚠️ You know they dont get much when they see a woman on tv and get bothered by it. Stay away from schools, sir, per government ruling ofc
By your comment she was of age 57 and now she's 62.
40 years have passed since the film was shown.
😄What if we achieve full biotech rejuvination in 20 years and after another 40 years from now she will physically be just as she was back then.
The last two words in Part 1 spoken by Chani “(this is only) The Beginning” To start Part 2 with this Irulan introduction, first two words of Part 2 “The beginning” would be incredible. Goosebumps thinking about it
Wow
She maybe is a princess
But she's also a Queen of my heart
Dune is amazing science fiction. Some of the best written. David Lynch's adaptation of the book is my favorite, mostly because H.R. Giger did the art for it.
That’s cool.
Giger didn't work on Lynch's "Dune". He worked on Jodorowsky's aborted adaptation and was supposed to work on Ridley Scott's version too before it got canned in favor of "Blade Runner".
Virginia was just exquisite
In the Dune Encyclopedia there is a timeline which has 14500-14200 BG (before Guild) as the "Golden Age of Invention" (radio, television, atomics, rocketry, genetics, and the computer), so 10,191 (AG) would be around 25,000 AD
Although many despise Dune 1984, it has the best beginning narration and ending credits scene in film
She is incredibly pretty
Now THAT looks like an Emperor's daughter to me.
Paul marries her and still has Chani. It is good to be the muad'dib.
Paul doesn’t love her. She’s probably very unhappy, her father has been deposed and she’s been forced to marry a man who doesn’t love her.
@@frodo322 Never ruin a good story with the facts, man.
@@shawnn7502 Those facts ARE the good story. He only marries her to stop a war, and she knows it. That's why she spends her time writing
@@shawnn7502 well in those societies where political arranged marriages are a common thing Queens really do not expect to marry somebody they loved

David Lynch knows how to cast
Indeed. Also in Twin Peaks he casted wonderful girls.
Yes, he's the first man ever to cast a beautiful woman.
😂@@StarWarsMoments
This really reminds me of the opening of Lord of the Rings, with the mysterious music and voice over.
One of the best intros ever.
Thanks for uploading it as well as for your other, special videos too.
You must have a serious problem if you dont get goosebumps when she says "also known as Dune"
Okay then ig it’s time for me to pay a visit to a psychiatrist thank you so much
Well, despite all my psychological issues, I guess I am still relatively fine, as I do get goosebumps. I actually get them at "Know then that it is the year 10191"
You are low IQ.
This opening and it's conatations constantly blows my mind. Timeless perfection and power.
I busted a gut when she says "i forgot to tell you"
The original version that Lynch had in mind had her remembering another 50 things she forgot to tell us. She would have faded in and out for nearly an hour.
Electronica/Goa trance Band that used a lot of samples from this Dune intro on an album in the late 90's: " Astral Projection - Dancing Galaxy " track and album from 1997 - Samples from on several tracks including a more ambient one called 'Ambient Galaxy' , Easy to find on youtube. Was a fairly big Electronica&Goa Trance thing back then:)
Thankyou - hadn't heard that record before - what a delight. Cheers!
saw them play their new album last August, pretty good! worth a listen
Only a filmmaker as skilled and mesmerizing as David Lynch could break the most sacred rule of cinema, show don’t tell, and still have it be an absolute banger of an opening. Certainly helps having an actress like Virginia Madden to sell it too
Actually. It was an incredibly poor start. The first film is desperately boring in parts.
She gives me goosebumps each time! ❤️
This is how a princess looks like ...
Know then that this is science fiction, and it's brilliant...
This is one of my all time favorites. The blu-ray from Universal is quite excellent.
She nailed it. I don't know how she did it, but she's so beautiful and so ethereal. And her voice is mesmerizing.
All women were in those days.. Legend, Neverending Story, Princess Bride, Labyrinth… women were stunning in those days
Princess Irulan😍
My love
This Movie is just awesome so awesome I got the DVD.
Ah yes, the best Irulan design.
I want this epic film rereleased in IMAX 3-D!!!.
Princess Irulan is so cool! She wrote so many books. I'd definitely read the Manual of Muad'dib
So beautiful
I like Lynch's choice of choosing irulan for the opening monologue. She's a sympathetic character. It worked well.
I remember Dune but never seen the movie back in 1984 while I was in school lived in Korea. I had the coloring book once and also one of my classmate had a movie book. Years come by I finally seen the whole movie and then on DVD from Netflix. Lots of things to discover that were made back in the 80s that I never seen before.
This should have been the missing intro for To Tame A Land song from Iron Maiden on the Piece of Mind album.
The song is talking about DUNE.
A beginning is a very delicate time - I'll never forget those words
It’s kind of comedic how she keeps disappearing and reappearing. Gave me a chuckle when I first saw it.
Bye...oh, just one more thing....
She's the Colombo of opening narrators.
I love Irulan ❤❤!
I prefer her to Florence Pugh.
Virginia Madsen looked stunning in this...boy howdy!
Actually, the spice just lets the navigators see into the future (which is needed to navigate safely at faster than light speeds). The machines do all the hard work. I take this from the books, though, don't remember if the movie changed that into space-folding or if it's just inconsistent.
She thought she was done with the exposition twice, but Lynch said, wait there’s more. Twice.
Somehow Irulan pops into my mind, she's really a jewel, but sadly her fate is quite tragic
Well, she lived in Arrakeen palace. The servants catered to her and she had plenty of time to write. She was not forced to go into exile like the rest of her family despite being a conspirator. Besides her life was forgiven after poisoning Chani. Finally she was able to raise Paul's children. Where exactly is the tragedy? Paul ignored her? Their marriage was just a political decision. So no, I do not feel sorry for her at all. For others it was much worse.
Irulan was a political prisoner, she basically had no human connection and that’s why she wrote everything, they kept her because they wanted a hostage and the plus side of chanti treating her like crap and Paul using her because he knew nothing about politics and Irulan did, she actually did more for Paul’s house in the end than anyone
. Paul would not allow her any type of love, and I can’t imagine how depressed she was. It’s good that she could snuff all of her emotions out because personally I would want to die. And Paul forgave her because she extended his concubines life because he had a vision she would die in childbirth, so he was actually grateful to her because he saw by Irulan doing that that he actually got more time with his concubine, who was also terrible as well. They both were.
Irulan is a tragic figure and deserves better. She was separated from her sisters, and all she did was write books because that was really all she had to do. Paul and chanti made her life hell and constantly did everything they could to keep her in isolation.
Paul is not a hero. The book starts out and you think it’s heroes journey but an actuality, Paul didn’t give a shit about anyone who was being oppressed. He just wanted power. And after his concubine dies, he literally screws off. Had it not been for Irulan his entire line would’ve died off. And she raised his kids and did a damn good job considering the ending. He owes her everything. But Paul is no hero. It was all about power. Irulan is the reason Paul‘s house did not die and ended up staying on the throne and she did that incredible incredible personal expense.
all these years, i really thought Princess Irulan was sharon stone in dune's opening.
So good!
Best intro ever.
I believe her.
Beautiful.... :O
Virginia Madsen:
Sydney Sweeney long before there was Sydney Sweeney
That's an insult to Virginia
Kaley Cuoco. I can't unsee it.
Seriously, Einstein's major breakthrough was that he proved what you said is actually not the case. That's what he's famous for: That the universe is NOT constant, but RELATIVE.
And the movie is on... it's not a bad start. I remember first seeing this at a planetarium-yes, the place where they usually showcase stars. It was a profound experience.
Gives me goosebumps! This movie is freaking awesome. I want to watch the new one coming out in 2021 but my hopes are not that high for it. David Lynch made a brilliant movie and it really captured the spirit of the book. It left out a lot though… Probably better after reading the book.
Astral Projection anyone?
Ohh yeah :D
...and lots of other goa trance tracks!
Yep
+Hugo Santos thats why i'm here
Don't forget about Timeless - Spice! '94 trance classic!
FUKKIN CHILLS MAN
Sadly Irulan will not be making an appearance in Dune (2021).
THX intro!
I thihkn i preferred this version, so cool. Really good acting by Virginia Madsen. This type of narration would have helped a lot in the new movies.
Now she's at the age of 62.
40 years have passed since the film was shown.
😄What if we achieve full biotech rejuvination in 20 years and after another 40 years from now she will physically be just as she was back then?
Gives me goose bumps
Irulan looks baked as fuck 😂
Sexy but elegant..
When truth is nowhere to be seen we turn to fiction to fell it.
The spice is available at my local dispensary, and it expands the shit out of my consciousness!
This has such an otherworldly tone or feel to it
I sentence you to Goosebumps!
Any re edit of this film must keep this bit unchanged.
This is what Villeneuve's "Dune" lacked.
A beginning is a very delicate time.
ASMR in the 80s!
She is really pretty, like a proper 10/10, top tier beauty.
Agreed
the amount of spice in this clip i too damn high!
Man this movie is so old the spice now has probably turned into old spice. 😂
That may be for the year 10000-1-91. But a few years later the known universe is ruled by the Padasha Empress Irulan the 1st, my wifum.
Saidly not the Universe is ruled by Emperor Mahdi Paul Atreides
Epic !
Princess irulan o seen her ago on television alongside she is the middle let see if Virginia Madsen look like that I saw her
MORE!
As problematic as this version is, I still really like it.
@storietellermusic The story is a bit difficult to follow if you haven’t read the book. The editing is choppy which leads to the story being somewhat unintelligible. The fx are less than stellar.
All that said, there are many scenes that are simply perfect and I do prefer this version in many ways over Villeneuve’s, though his vision is glorious in its own right.
Hottest woman ever? Quite possible
These events are described in the Legends of Dune prequel trilogy. Human loses are enormous, and whole machine-controlled planets, including Earth, are wiped-out using atomic weapons, obliterating their human populations.
