Old MOB saying "2 is 1 and 1 is none" with kit. I don't use the internal fuel tank on my auxiliary, switch to external and when finished just turn to internal and run the engine out of fuel (dry). Carrying a full spare fuel line gives me piece of mind. Lucas fuel stabiliser and cylinder head lube work great for up to 6 months storage. Never use E10. Worth the 20 min trip to get E5. Glad you got in safe, good drills and good explanation on recovery procedures. PS. Thanks for the Lazy Lures renaissance suggestion.
Glad to see it all worked out in the end. I'm lucky there's a garage just up the road which has E5 and Premium. It would be worth taking some of the fuel in the tank and putting it in a plastic bottle and letting it stand overnight. It should then seperate any water contamination. My 6hp is just about to be serviced and any fuel drained for winterising. Happy Xmas to you and yours, look forward to more videos in the New Year ⚓
Merry Christmas Rob, I enjoyed your non fishing video. I only lure fish for bass off the shore, day and night, you have just convinced me never to buy a boat. Greetings from Ireland.
Thanks mate, merry Christmas to you too. Hope you’ve had a better season than me on the bass! I wouldn’t want to put anyone off boating - everything has a risk element, this was the first time for me in probably 40 years of boating that I’ve needed help to get home! 😊
Glad it worked out for you. I was in the same situation recently, ended up being a low pressure pump in the VST. I checked the fuel a week or two later and noticed small few particles inside the fuel, I think it's the fuel lines degrading, so I'm planning on putting in new lines. Maybe worth it on your end
Thanks David, the pressure from both engine pumps checked out fine on mine. Some of the fuel lines on a 175 run through the hull and are tricky to change but I might have another go at it over winter. 👍😊
Thanks for the update. In my previous comment i did not ask you why you did not have a, as we call it in Holland, a "homecoming" engine. I was thinking it would sound stupid as a not having a boat person, explaning to a person that has a boat, what he should do. Capice? Glad to see you have got a small extra engine now👍. Hope you and yours have a very merry Xmas and hope to see you again next year Greetz from Stipo
Hi Stipo! Homecoming engine is now in place! I didn’t have one before because keeping the fuel fresh is a small outboard tank is a nuisance but hopefully that won’t be an issue with a few litres of Aspen onboard. Merry Christmas to you and yours 🎄😊
Great video it what keep’s me from getting a boat the cost and fath on I just charter once or twice a week have a great Christmas you and the family and look forward to more videos in the new year
Hiya, I'm very surprised that no-one has suggested SEAFOAM in the fuel tank on a regular basis, Even after a year after winter our engine started first time and ran sweet as a nut all season every time. Just a guess, but I suspect simple condensation on a cold n frosty morning, I think during the warmer months all good, until late autumn and without fuel additive this will repeat itself. We have never used any other additives and about £13 Seafoam does exactly what is required from the product whether petrol or diesel. Anyways I never thought you would have broken the law of all people to receive a ticket,Glad you found your friends out eh. Have a great Xmas n new year to all your family. Cheers from Scotland ❤️
Thanks mate, I’ve a few comments about different additives, I’ll have to look into all of them and see if they offer anything better than the Fuel Set stabiliser that I routinely use. 👍😊
Think I'd settle for a one in forty year event! Sometimes I think you just have to take in on the chin, mitigate the risks as far as you can and move on.. Have a great Xmas.
Hello, Sorry if this has already been mentioned or you have checked. Did you check for degradation of the fuel lines? I had the same problem, with my mercury's, about a year ago. The fuel lines from tank to engine had degraded inside. Not easy to see on the outside of the line.Engine kept cutting out. Glad to see you got back safe.👍 Regards, Russ.
Thanks Russ, the fuel lines look decent at both ends. Some of the line runs through the hull and I couldn’t replace this section but I put the problem down to fuel in the tank as it seems only to happen with one batch of fuel from one tank. Next trip will be a couple of hours running in the river to give it a proper trial 🤞
Strange that it's running and then stops after 10 minutes i have had that when the fuel bulb is is facing down and seems to slow the petrol feed engine stopped couple of squeeze on the bulb and engine works with the bulb pointing upward, but yes the e 20 petrol is not good and even the outboard manufacturer has a problem with the gaskets getting knackered and don't know what to do about it
Yes mate, the 10 minutes running is a mystery but with no other changes apart from the fuel in one tank it was 10 minutes or so with the suspect fuel, 30 minutes smooth running with good fuel. Sea trials next. 👍😊
A word of humble advice never use fuel additives petrol or diesel , A couple of my mates have had engine stop and indeed one of injector failure/replacement whilst using these products, and like you, investigated (the injector chap did go for fuel analysis as his bill was in the £000's), and nothing found until a clean tank of fuel was connected minus additive. . E10 does indeed attract water through its ethanol content as you know, but keep it fresh or tank to the brim and forget additives in the marine environment..
Boaters should NEVER use E10 - too much water in this stuff. On all the boaters I talk to one Petrol Station company crops up regular-ish, even on the lower ethanol content fuel is SHELL - something weird in all their fuel - dont know what it is, but just like E10 - IT EATS GASKETS and causes outboards to collapse. With E10 the water content can build over time(and as said - ethanol eats gaskets and more - google it). I have emptied small outboards internal tanks(that broke down) and often surprised how much water in them. Also - this water will sit in the sump bowl of a carburettor - don't forget the fuel lines. Without adding a stabilizer - fuel has an 8 week life span - I use 'Stabil' (gives it 1 year life). One other problem that can occur over time is a resin skin can form inside fuel lines - it grows like a clear plastic lining and then eventualy breaks up and gathers at one end, blocking the flow of fuel - noticable when accelerating.
If it's fuel contamination another motor running on the same fuel isn't going to help I would've dumped a fuel in a glass jar or a clean 5 gallon bucket and see what the contaminants were you have to be able to see water or contaminants in the fuel
I completely agree mate, that’s why I’ve decided to carry Aspen onboard for the auxiliary so that it’s a completely independent power unit, hopefully I won’t need it though! 👍
Hi Gary, my outboard bracket is adjustable so either would work. I went for the short shaft, mainly so there’s less engine in the way when I’m fishing😊
E10 fuel draws moisture from the air if the tank vent is left open or not sealing properly i found this out to my cost when using E10 on my 175 with a inbuilt fuel tank and using a fuel stabilizer thinking because i used a stabilizer my fuel would be ok ive had to replace my H/P fuel pump & filter Fuel regulator in the vst tank H /P fuel filter L /Pressure fuel filter and fuel line as the Ethanol eats into the inner core of the fuel pipe blocking fuel supply having been told by suzuki UK my engine will run fine using E10 but if E5 is available use that instead the E10 could of had water contamination from the place you bought it from as the garage tanks have a open air vent ive never had any problems using E5 but went on holiday down to Fowey and the only fuel available was E10 ill never use it again or if i have to ill use plastic tanks and make sure the the tank is full and the air valve is closed when its stored Tight Lines Alain
Thanks Alain, that’s a nasty and costly fuel issue you’ve had. I’m not convinced my issue was water as nothing in the fuel separator and no evidence reported from the boatyard when the VST was stripped so the contamination is still a bit of a mystery. I would definitely use E5 if it wasn’t readily available though. 😊

That’s a good shout with the spare fuel line. Glad you’ve found the Renaissance Eel, it’s an impressive lure! 👍😊
There were many useful tips / useful information and lessons I have learnt from your video. Keep up your enjoyable and down to earth videos.
Thanks Ian!😊
Glad to see it all worked out in the end. I'm lucky there's a garage just up the road which has E5 and Premium.

Thanks mate, same to you. I have the old fuel in a sealed container so I’ll do some further investigation I think👍😊
Very informative thanks for sharing 👍
Cheers Paul 👍

I personally would also use super unleaded. The other fuels that use alcohol rot pipes and seals from the inside out which may not help your issue.
I agree Adam, it’s one of the disadvantages of rural living that not all fuels are readily available to me 👍
Glad you're be back and everything is OK merry Christmas to you too
And to you mate 😊
Glad you found the problem rob. Merry Xmas and a happy new year to you and yours. 😊😊😊
Thanks Dave, same to you mate 😊

I use aspen in my lawnmower. It made my life much easier thanks to its longevity and stability.
Yes, it’s too expensive to use for the main engine but hopefully if will give me a reliable auxiliary 👍😊
@ yep should be a game changer
Think I'd settle for a one in forty year event! Sometimes I think you just have to take in on the chin, mitigate the risks as far as you can and move on.. Have a great Xmas.
Completely agree! Merry Christmas mate 😊

That’s very interesting, thank you. I’ve not heard that view of additives before, more investigation needed I think…
I had the same ,found pick up pipe split in 2nd tank ,had to transfere fuel into first tank to get home.
Good fault finding mate! Pick up pipes were all good on mine 👍😊
Had that once took me ages to find as only a problem at full chat half throttle was running fine

Thanks Ray, I’ll look into Stabil and see if it offers better protection than the Fuel Set that I use. 👌😊
Have a great Christmas
Thanks David, same to you buddy 😊
Good for you fitting an auxiliary. Some others with you tube channels are not so sensible. 🤔
One should be enough but I think I’ve covered all bases now with the aux! 😊
@fishingsalcombe yes it should but I look at mine and it's just reassuring to know I should be able to get back, all be it slowly..

Hi Rob, is the auxiliary long or short shaft, am looking for one for my 175 cheers
Hi Gary, my outboard bracket is adjustable so either would work. I went for the short shaft, mainly so there’s less engine in the way when I’m fishing😊
these things happen, my boat goes in the water spring 2025 at last. merry xmas to you and yours heres to a fishy 2025.
Thanks mate, same to you and good luck with the boat launch in spring - exciting!
I was told by Yamaha Jeff don’t buy supermarket fuel
For sure mate, I don’t buy supermarket fuel and I would buy E5 if it wasn’t a 40-minute round trip to buy it!
Glad you got back mate, but you've hot the mail on the head, E10 is terrible, ruins the inner fuel pipe linings
I completely agree Colin, I wish E5 was more readily available where I am! 👍
Lesson learnt ... no women allowed on boat it's bad luck 😅
🤣🤣🤣
first again, sad lol
Ker-ching🤣🤣
