The Aux debate is a real dilemma. I don't use one and luckily have never needed one in over 20 years (that's me jinxed!). It would alter the way my boat balances and I think affect performance and efficiency of the main engine. Having said that if I broke down without one I would no doubt immediately regret it! Great to see the help you received and the boating community looking after one another. I am sure you would do the same for anyone who needed the help. Be good to hear about how you coped with the situation as it arose and the action you took 👍
Thanks Gareth, I didn’t want to film as the situation unfolded as safety was my priority but I will give a full rundown when I’m back on the water. It’s the first time I’ve needed a tow in and I was lucky that an expert skipper responded to the request for help put out by Falmouth Coastguard for me. I got rid of my auxiliary engine as I thought it couldn’t very well be relied upon due to the fuel going stale (despite intentions to run it every fortnight!). Someone on here advised me about Aspen fuel, which is ethanol free and long lasting so I’m currently having a rethink about the aux engine.
Bad luck Rob. Sounds fuel related to me, maybe the cold snap has caused some separation. I also don't use an aux, as it is a lot of extra transom weight to drag around for almost no use. Hope to see you out there again soon, and hoping our weather will be kinder for the rest of the winter, as I need to get on the Skerries for some Spurs.
You’re right mate, I have it back from the boatyard now but not on the water. Looks like a fuel or fuel tank issue which I need to investigate a bit more before I re-launch. Hope the weather gets better soon for those Skerries trips👍🎣
WOW, now that is a stroke of bad luck!!! Thank god you got help from a fellow fisherman aided by the coastguard, massive thanks to both of them otherwise you might be drifting who knows where to and for how long. You are an experient sea angler but i think for Vanessa it must have felt very frigtning. Hope she feals better after this event and hope she understands that she was safe all the time 👍. Not only because of the help you received but i am sure, seeing how calm you always are in your video's, your precense must have helped her aswell. Hope this was a fluke and will happen never again. Hope to see you "here" soon again. Greetz from Stipo
Hope it's nothing to serious with the engine and you are back on the water soon. Going to have to go back to the bit explaining the tides, weight and lures etc bit until I understand it but thanks for explaining.
@@fishingsalcombe Yes, your explanations always make sense but just takes a while for it to sink in with me, and it things like that which are not talked about which can make a big different. Many thanks.
Thanks Mark, yes, I’m definitely re-thinking the aux engine. I got rid of my auxiliary for two reasons: first, my replacement Yamaha should be very reliable and limp mode should get me home in most circumstances (but not all, as I found out to my cost). And secondly, when I previously had an aux engine I found it difficult to keep the fuel fresh so the aux engine couldn’t really be relied upon. From comments on here I’ve heard of Aspen fuel which looks like a good option for the spare engine so yes, after this incident I’m definitely reconsidering an auxiliary engine.
Store the fuel separately in small gerry can and use the fuel every 3-6 months and refresh it! Use it in car or something or have a way to take a feed from your main tank! If you have a petrol engine @@fishingsalcombe
Yes, I was a fair way out when it happened with no other boats in sight. Falmouth Coastguard did a sterling job and Malcolm, skipper of the Anglo Dawn, was a star with an expert tow into harbour.
@fishingsalcombe I take it you do have a racor fitted and that it's easily accessible? These are really necessary on all boats, saved my bacon many times
Hope it hasn’t put your stepsister off I know you’ll not be too worried it’s part of fishing and these things rarely happen pleased everyone is ok and not an expensive engine fix
Thanks David, the boatyard has sorted it out, looks like fuel contamination in one tank got into the injectors. The injectors are now cleaned but I haven’t got to the bottom of the contamination issue from fresh fuel.
Not a good day ,glad you got a tow back and are safe , hope the engine is not to expensive to repair
Thanks mate, ok with the engine, I just need to pin down how I had a fuel contamination issue.

Thanks Stipo, I will definitely be back and Vanessa will go boating again but maybe in summer next time!
So pleased you are well and both got back safely, thank the Lord 👍
Thanks John👍
Glad you got back safe rob. Hope the engine isn’t to bad or to expensive to repair 😊
All ok thanks mate, fuel contamination which I haven’t got to the bottom of yet.
@ I’m sure your get it sorted 😎
Brave this week Rob 😮
That was last Saturday Blair, last of the calm days!
Would love to see a follow up video up what happend with the engine and any repair that was needed, Thanks for the video - L C
Thank you, I’ll definitely do that when I’m fully sorted and back on the water - sometime after Storm Bert has passed through!
Hope it's nothing to serious with the engine and you are back on the water soon. Going to have to go back to the bit explaining the tides, weight and lures etc bit until I understand it but thanks for explaining.
Thanks Bob, my videos are off the cuff so I hope the tide explanation comes across ok when you re-watch it. 👍🎣

Always enjoy the videos, bad luck on this occasion.
Will you be considering an auxiliary in the future after this problem?

Good to see you back in safe

Ahh bad luck hope you get all sorted
Thanks mate, almost sorted, just need to get to the bottom of a fuel tank issue.
@fishingsalcombe I take it you do have a racor fitted and that it's easily accessible? These are really necessary on all boats, saved my bacon many times
Yes mate, no sign of water or contamination in the bowl though.
Hope it hasn’t put your stepsister off I know you’ll not be too worried it’s part of fishing and these things rarely happen pleased everyone is ok and not an expensive engine fix
Not put off but I think it might be summer and daylight for her next trip out!
@ yes that’s when I’ll be out next it’s snowing like hell up north today
Nightmare! Good to see Ness though. Hope the squid is tasty
Thanks Bri, the squid was very good!
Hope the engine isn't too bad mate
Not too bad mate. Injector clean at the boatyard from contaminated fuel.
Spare 8 10 hp will take you away from rocks and get you home stay safe always
Yes, I might have to re-think that one!
Hope the engine is nothing to serious

Used to fish on the first Anglo dawn with Ted cook he knew his stuff, lovely squid you caught thanks
Just ate the squid tonight - very good! Ted Cook certainly pulled some fish out and the Anglo Dawn is still a great charter from Salcombe.
