  • Jordan Peele's third horror masterpiece, NOPE, is a UFO Sci-Fi mystery thriller with something more going on underneath. Many interpreting it as an essay on animal rights. Sam Gavin explains why he feels this is not the case.

I think you've hit the nail on the head! i recently had someone point out that there is endless imagery of eyes in this film (clocks, cameras that look like faces with two eyes, circular art with an iris in the middle etc) which i think really bolsters your point that while animal abuse is definitely important to the story, it's not what the story is about. it also raises the question of when does the act of watching something happen make the watcher complicit? Jupe took the wrong lessons from his traumatic experience and eventually his actions led to a large-scale tragedy that would've never happened if he weren't trying to sell tickets so people can see his housetrained alien. commodifying tragedy makes the tragedy worse

It was during the editing of this that I realised Jupe likely modelled his alien merch off of the film cameras that were facing him during the Gordy incident. As you say, two eyes!

This is a really insightful analysis Sam.
Daniel Kaluuya is chillingly good in this. He communicates a lot about his character without speaking, and you slowly understand why he may prefer the company of animals to people.

This, too, is a really good insight. I hadn't quite picked up on that myself but you're right! Thanks for watching!

Glad you're still making videos dude. I walked away from Nope with a lot of questions about what it was trying to say so I really appreciate your take on it and media consumption in general. It's pretty thoughtful.

I'd been working for a year in a job I was loving. Recent circumstances out of my control dictated I leave it for another, which is sadly less creatively fulfilling. When that happens, I turn to Sam's Channel. Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching.

@@SamsChannelOfficial I'm sorry to hear that. I had a similar job change hit me back in 2020 and it took a toll on me I'm still recovering from. I hope your job gets better and look forward to your next video regardless.

I would argue that there is a more tangible connection between the Gordy's Home Incident and the main plot. That connection being an explanation of Jupe's motivations and mindset. The way the incident went down, he came away from it with a mix of survivor's guilt and the false belief that he was spared because he'd formed a meaningful connection with the chimp. This explains why he thought it was a good idea to attempt to tame Jean Jacket. He believed he could form that (illusory) connection again and that it would once again save him. It also explains why he doesn't try to flee, or even visibly panic at all, when JJ consumes him. On some (possibly subconscious) level, he feels he deserves death.

Great analysis! I especially loved the part where you didn’t spend 5 hours and 50 minutes ranting about how much you thought it was ‘An Unbridled Cataclysm’. 👍

That Gordy scene is one of the scariest scenes in the film and I decided to watch videos about the event that inspired it (Travis the Chimp) and that is also really scary.

I’ll be honest; I just spent the film soaking in the atmosphere, the build of tension, the pretty amazing, nuanced performances and the craft of it all. I just wanted to smell the roses, if you will, and was pretty unconcerned with the subtext (though I obviously picked up on the key themes) and wanted to leave it to a second viewing to really dig deeper and figure out what the film was really trying to SAY. You’ve certainly given me a lot to chew on when I get around to that.

Trying to get into the habit of not wasting the first 4 minutes giving exposition on where I've been or where the culture is currently at. Glad to hear it's refreshing!
