The shoe was also a metaphor for "waiting for the other shoe to drop", and Jupe thinks because it never did (aka Gordy never attacked him) that makes him special, which is why he had the ego to think he could control Jean Jacket

During the commercial shoot at the beginning OJ avoids eye contact with the Camera and Crew when talking to them which plays into the idea of seeing Hollywood as a predator. That scene contrast with the end of the film when OJ Looks at Jean Jacket's mouth which resembles a shutter box.
I love how cerebral Peele's films are and this commentary on Hollywood being a monster that devours people engage with it is so well done. I also think Cameras and the pursuit for fame and profit can be seen as people meddling with a beast they don't fully have control over.

Funny that nobody (even you!) mentioned that in the last scene of the movie when she used the well to take photographs, she mechanically recreated a succession of pictures that would work as a motion picture should they be assembled, mirroring the fate of her ancestor except shifting the position as the "creator" and thus, the one to be remembered. :)

That thing didnt take pictures fast enough to make a motion picture out of anything...from what I saw. If one was able to set up everything being filmed then that would be different. I don't know if you guys have heard before the phrase ''waiting for the other shoe to drop''. My grandparents use it a lot and it was the first thing that popped into my mind at that very beginning. For us it means waiting something bad to happen, or even more bad news. To me, the shoe was that. It was Jupe waiting for the shoe to drop, triggering Gordy and attacking him. And the alien eating him was the other shoe dropping.

One thing I noticed that nobody has talked about is the preying mantis.
The preying mantis was blocking the cameras and when a preying mantis feels threatened or makes it self bigger and larger and can change shape, which is what the alien dose at the end when it finds a formidable foe in OJ, also, if you look up pictures of a preying mantis type you can see it actually looks like what the alien looks like on the end.
If you want to look it up “orchid preying mantis “

I believe Jupe's name is especially coming in as Jupiter, is also important. Not only is it a massive astral body, but it's the one that has the giant Eye. It can't stop staring, defying the one rule when working with possibly dangerous animals. Which is exactly what Jupe does.
Also I believe the only creature to live through its title card was indeed Lucky.
Finally, we hear OJ specifically mention that "You don't turn your back on bears, you don't show red next to bulls, and you don't look wild animals in the eye, or at Jean Jacket specifically period". What does Jupe do? Wears a red jacket, turns his back on it multiple times, and stares directly at it. Also Jean Jacket itself looks like an eye from the underneath so it would make sense that looking at it falls into looking animals in the eye. Such a brilliant film.

"Nope" was repeated through the movie, and it was at times where characters would have been going towards danger. Traditionally African American's are the first to die in horror films, and it's often by the writers having the character make stupid decisions (i.e. walking towards the danger). I'm sure there were multiple meanings for the title, but to me it was a humorous response to that tradition. Instead of making a dumb decision, they take a second to think through the situation, and then say "nope", and stop themselves.

One thing I like about the movie, and can be extended to all of Peele's movies, is that they're straight horror movies but dont rely on the characters being traditionally unintelligent to drive the plot. In fact, the central characters show the capacity to think critically and learn, and this often is what leads to the resolution of the conflict. It creates an environment where the characters first need to figure out what's happening before the intelligent decisions can be made. There's no frustration from the audience, just us experiencing the horror in the confusion with them.
Namely, there's horror in the confusion followed by horror in the realization of what's happening.

The fist bump with Gordy, on a literal level, is due to his training on set to do just that. And because Jupe's eyes are veiled by the tablecloth, Gordy doesn't kill him. But on another level, I think Gordy is giving Jupe the fist bump to say to him, "We were being exploited and I took care of the problem," Jupe being given the role of a token Asian-American actor on a cheesy sitcom (think of how the fist bump is commonly used in as a "yeah, we did it!" sort of gesture). Jupe misunderstands Gordy's gesture: he never realizes he, too, was being exploited, and indeed ends up becoming one of the exploiters as an adult.

One thing people seem to be missing about Jupe's character is before he reveals the horse Lucky he says under his breath, "You were chosen". I think this implies Jupiter didn't think that he had somehow tamed or reached an understanding with Gordy, but that he was literally blessed and chosen by God. So he essentially felt he was invincible in this scene, which is why he has joy on his face as his entire crowd is being devoured. Despite the rampage, the fist bump gesture was a saving grace moment from the character and he thought he could do the same with a UAP with similar animal instinct. The two major events in the movie (monkey attack, UFO sightings) also remind me of the kind of “spectacles” that people love to hear about, yet are forgotten about moments after they finish reading the article or video…similar to how the narrator in this video points out that Hollywood likes to “chew up and spit out” actors, animals, etc.

In the flash back, he looked at her and did the "I'm watching you" signal. Towards the end, he gives her that signal again as a way of telling her that it's her turn with Jean Jacket. Think when a dog urinates at multiple places when it smells another dog, it does it to mark territory. Also the fist bump with Georgie may have been something like permission. If you've seen planet of the apes, apes grant permission by rubbing their hand.

Chimps also present their hands to show submission or dominance. A closed fist is dominant whereas an open palm is submissive. It's likely Ricky would have been mauled to death if Gordy had not been shot. He was looking Gordy in the eyes and closing his fist.

I think multiple messages are again being referenced. Rain in the Bible represents acceptance and surender. The Haywords are being told to submit. It can also be a blessing or miracle...in this case a bad miracle. Blood rain has long been considered a bad omen. It is mentioned in the book of Revelations as a sign of the end times and a herald of plagues. In animals bloody urine is a sign of toxins. It's possible Jean Jacket was poisoned by eating too many people and/or non organic material. If JJ was marking his territory it's interesting it was with blood and not pure urine or glandular fluid. Snakes and other predators sometimes regurgitate under extreme stress to defend themselves. Likewise short horned lizards shoot blood from their eyes to avoid predators. It's possible JJ was more threatened than threatening.

I'm not even sure if Jupe is a reliable narrator in his recollection of the event. It sure seems to play into how his life is in the future: how he interacts with Jean Jacket (thinks it requires some kind of sacrifice) and how he is a performer and is still somewhat managed (his wife kind of had that role). It's a tough one. I'll be honest with you though, I really have no idea what I'm talking about :)

The “not looking in the eyes” not only refers to a way to avoid challenge in the animal kingdom, it’s also a direct reference to the post slavery Jim Crow era. Blacks were not allowed to look whites directly in the eyes. Black people were forced to avoid eye-contact with whites or face death! Many black men were beaten and lynched for just the appearance (or lie) of looking at a white woman. The main characters learned to cower to the alien. It wasn’t til the end that OJ challenged it by purposely staring directly at the alien. He showed it that he was no longer afraid.

The shoe is standing up, just as its displayed, because he's fixated on the memory so much he's changing the details of the attack. Same reason the 3 cameras look like the masks his 3 kids wear. The table cloth veil is most likely to help with the cgi and not be symbolic especially since they made sure to show its practically see through from both sides (sorry film theory students). The reason its important that Jupe has clearly romanticized a terrible memory to cope with it is to explain his characters hubris towards the danger of the sky creature. He didn't learn his lesson, he cherishes the tragedy and victimization as an event that made him feel special and part of a larger moment in culture. The evidence for this is shown by his room dedicated to the show/tragedy and the way his face lights up when remembering the SNL sketch. The almost fist bump is almost certainly another detail that's been added after the fact as Jupe probably went from being a lucky survivor to feeling like his relationship with Gordy spared him (remember there was 3 different monkeys that played gordy)

I don't know if anyone caught this in the movie, but the 5 chapters in the movie actually represent the 5 mysteries of the rosary. In the 5 mysteries, there are at least 5 significant words that foreshadow the plot of the story. Chapter 1: Ghost-Annunciation (When OJ sees Jean Jacket for the first time), Chapter 2: Clover-Visitation (When Jupe's sons arrive to prank OJ and Jean Jacket arrives with OJ seeing them for the first time), Chapter 3: Gordy-Birth (When Gordy's Home massacre occurs and leaving Jupe the only survivor of the incident where he falsely believes that he can tame animals, sparking the birth of the "spectacle"), Chapter 4: Lucky-Presentation (Where Jupe tries to present Jean Jacket to the audience, but it later goes wrong with JJ eating him and the crowd), and Chapter 5: Jean Jacket-Finding (Where the group tries to get the footage of Jean Jacket to claim their "find"). Also, in every mystery there is an important line and advice that always says; "Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.", which is something the characters, besides OJ, should do when encountering Jean Jacket. In order to survive, you have to not give in to the temptation by not looking at JJ and you will live. And the "deliver us from evil" line is actually representing the evil in trying to get "the perfect shot", where you will go to any lengths to get the frame, even if it costs your life, and how it's not worth it.

One thing I’m surprised more people haven’t speculated about is just “Jupiter” as an explicit call to Roman mythology and obviously space (where aliens come from!). Jupiter is the king of the gods, or on the apex of the hierarchy, and rules over the sky or heavens keeping order. It’s repeated in the film that this predator is territorial, and we’re not given a clear answer as to why Jean Jacket has chosen the ranch and theme park. Yet the name of the amusement park “Jupiter’s claim” may really be an allusion to the heavens/sky that the god resides over, making this a territory disputed between Jupe and Jean Jacket as an alien predator. I hope someone with more understanding of Roman mythology might expand on this, for example, does Jupiter have any fatal flaws that would explain Jupes fate? Does animal sacrifice matter here?

yeah that scene was really shocking. i think it’s partly because the prevailing philosophy in monster movies is that NOT showing the monster is scarier than showing it, so we really don’t expect to see exactly what happens to the people who get sucked up, the actual insides of the monster and people being digested alive.
it’s doubly horrifying when their screams are then echoed in the next attack, when JJ is vomiting on the house.

I love the helmet of the TMZ guy calling back to the mirror that sets Lucky the horse off in the beginning with the commercial shoot. I thought that was going to be some kind of turning point like ‘oh it doesn’t respond well to it’s reflection’ but I’m not mad it didn’t go there.

Another thing that I consider an Easter egg is that Em said “you were the Asian kid in kid sheriff?” Whereas in real life when Steven Yuen got big with Walking Dead, many people thought he was the kid in “Indiana Jones and the temple of doom”

Personally I think JJ looks like an orchid when Em catches the photo of it. And the praying Mantis is to me a reference to aliens because of the way they look, and it always seemed like Praying mantis were the same image of aliens. Also, there is a praying mantis that is called the Orchid Mantis and it definitely looks otherworldly. Just my little observation. Prob nothin

Great stuff. One thing I spotted was the red marks on the stunt horse on the film set looked to match a star constellation shown in another early scene. Felt like a "this is where this thing is from" kinda nod.

The shoe is standing upright at the beginning of movie is because it’s how Jupe sees it standing upright everyday in his glass collection

This was such a great video! I think this movie is brilliant and I saw it twice in the theater. I still like Get Out and US better but they are two of my favorite movies. I love all these hidden things in this movie it just goes to show how great of a writer Jordan Peele is. I think he's three for three

Nope was a loving tribute/homage to classic Spielberg, in particular Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and especially Jaws. So many brilliant Spielbergesque qualities to this movie, from the characters and music to the cinematography and old Hollywood 1950’s style visual effects with the UFO. But it also reminded me of classic Alfred Hitchcock. The way that Jordan Pelle builds tension and suspense in this film( as well as all his films)and the suspense and buildup is better than the payoff, just like Hitchcock used to do. Even touches in the film reminded me of classic Rod Serling era Twilight Zone in the vastness and scale and scope of the environment and focus on a small number of characters in a mysterious unusual situation throughout

The pig is on the roof at the 'amusement' park for irony as 'pigs can't fly'. Also, the mirror helmet of the motorcyclist is just like the mirror globe that set off Lucky on the stage set. We saw OJ making a replica of this back at the ranch but I didn't see him use it. He was going to desensitize the horses to it so they wouldn't spook on set.
The coins being regretted by the UAP symbolizes money from heaven and that it isn't all that it's cracked up to be. Even if the 'key' , like what got stuck in Ghost, is handed to you, you don't know what or where to use it.

There's also an easter egg somewhat at the beginning of the film when we see OJ's ranch for the first time. Above the farmhouse, there are 3 glowing lights in a triangle formation. I think this references more modern UFO (or UAP) sightings that you see in those poor quality videos on youtube.
