The first game had me shitting myself at something as small as a twig snapping, in 2 i felt like i was playing a mix of Rainbow Six Vegas and Medal of Honour Allied Assault in a vietnam skin.
Yeah... It was a mixed bag. I remember being both blown away with the initial surprise in the render quality/picture etc. but it also lost the built in voicechat - for some bloody reason, Pterodon decided to remove it - FFS - and this action was a death blow to a really good core of regular players - people moved to TS - and the community never really took up map mods as with VC1.
You're right. The singleplayer wasn' that great. But the multiplayer was such fun playing and chatting with guys from all around the world. And you had the possilility the program a voice-binding-system. So much fun trash talk!
finalize your summary by giving us a VIETCONG - FIST ALPHA review . It is the same setting as the first game, but I don´t want to give you any big spoilers ;-)
That's why game devs should bring historical accuracy in some ways into their games but not to the point of sticking 100% to what actually went down. Hue itself was one of the toughest matchups the US military met in the Vietnam War directly being the Saigon Defense also during Tet. Both saw massive street to street skirmish and where each side fought tooth and nail for every building, every street, every lake. The 1st mission where you get swarmed was what and how the Tet Offensive began in both Hue and Saigon where the VC attacked in the middle of the night and besieged the Marines in Hue and the important American infrastructures in Saigon. Also, I would see that VC2 serves a total different purpose to VC1. VC1 is a pure shooter game whereas VC2 highlights the atrocities the Americans and the ARVN forces did during the Tet Offensive. It's more of an anti-war propaganda game thus it sorta makes sense on why everything is dumbed down and doesn't really encourages you to be a one-man hero but instead shows you the grim fact of how a soldier sees the war. The 1st scene already highlights the scene when like you said, you met VC1's protag but he ain't in a good shape but more in a drunken state of disrepair and it does feel like he had enough of the killings and the war. That's how I personally see VC2. Sure it's not a good game per-say and neither is it more engaging than VC1 in the action and movement feels but if you read deeper into it, it kinda makes sense on why the path diverges into that rather than following the steps of VC1 and improving upon it.
The highlight of the game was multiplayer between years of 2005-2014, best ctf moments, there even were old clan websites that had some old dads playing coop modes together in fan made maps that could take an hour to finish using teamspeak3 and it had multiple servers full of players, who were generally nice folks to play around, but because of Gamespy end, the multiplayer died out slowly, all that remains of vietcong2 online community is an old steam group where people gather to play few matches every now and again.
I’d love to play. I don’t remember the excact years when i played, but i think it was something like 2006 to 2012. I was in Fallen Angels first and then in Allstars back then, i think.
I remember seeing this in best buy when I was in middle school, never got to play it though. Battlefield Vietnam was dominating my pc gaming experience during that time
That point "The change all that was good with the first game and made no progress to show for it" is something that have stuck with me since I tried Vietcong 2 after I finished all the expansions for Vietcong 1 and I cant agree more, first game was a treasure trove of just neat details and interesting gamedesign. When the sequel came it felt more like any other shooter
The meta of this game in multiplayer was a kind of their own, in this game the animation to lay down is really fast, even faster than the time required to aim a gun so there was this meta of lying down and aiming at the legs of your adversary when you encounter them at close range. Also there was this element of bobby traps where you could place them at the entrance of rooms or buildings and they would get activated by the opening door... People who opened those doors stood no chance.
For the single-player campaign, it seems like the developers hit a wall in terms of what they could add after the first Vietcong, which along with its expansions, they really reached peak narrative and gameplay. So they seem to have taken a "in the streets" approach with Vietcong 2. The real strength of Vietcong 2 lies in its multiplayer, it was incredibly fun and had an active community, at least until GameSpy shut down :(( (RIP). the single-player was just a bonus tacked onto the main MP attraction for me
I beta tested this, believe me I fed all of what's been said by Tantwo and more back to pterodon, but they were rushed by 2K games to release it. Shame.
I agree with this! Been playing Vietcong 1 and 2 since i was a kid, Vietcong 1 is clearly better, I can't fully explained all of the flaws that Vietcong 2 has
Every other Vietnam based game is always filled with the same thing: clear out villages, patrol jungle and destroy rebel bunkers. This one tried to be original, it reenacted the events of Battle of Saigon in 1968 and as player who does like urban combat and does not like jungle that much, consider this as a upgrade to whole a different level.
The game is good but I had the feeling someone from 2k walked in the office and said "we need a game to compete with call of duty now!" Before it was finished.
A video about Vietcong? Man, you're making me feel old. But you're correct, the game was nowhere near as good as the original. In their defense, a lot of the gameplay in the original was centered around the mystery and uncertainty of the jungle, and it well emulated the stories of combat in Vietnam told by US vets. Vietcong 2 couldn't have copied what the original game did in an urban setting. That said, they could have done much better with the tactical gameplay and emphasized the tactics during the Battle of Hue, and they could have done a better job showing the differences between the Vietcong and the NVA. It's a frustrating game, and the gunplay isn't as fun as the original. It's easier to just get blasted by an enemy you can't see with pinpoint accuracy that you can't shoot back at because of the level geometry, whereas in Vietcong, it was hard at times but fair. There was also (usually) a finite amount of enemies, but they were hidden enough that it sometimes felt like they came out of nowhere (emphasizing that they know the jungle better than you). One of my favorite parts of Vietcong 2 though was how you get to play as one of the VC fighters that you meet during the story, and you can see the war from their perspective. It was only like 4 short missions, but it brought you back to the style of the original Vietcong and gave you a whole new perspective. I'd love to see a new Vietcong game with today's technology, maybe with alternating characters as a USGI and a Vietcong or NVA fighter, so you can see both sides of the war (though I understand there might be some apprehension about approaching that topic in a realistic manner). Something else that Vietcong 2 did, but didn't really expand on, was trauma to soldiers. When you meet Hawkins in the beginning, he's having nightmares and traumatic episodes because of all the time he spent in the tunnels, and the several moments he had where he was alone in the jungle and unable to receive help, like when he chases the captured GI through the tunnels and ends up near the river (and loses contact with the colonel before that point), or the one where he ends up in a VC camp at night after coming out of a tunnel system and has to run through the jungle to a ruin and wait for rescue, or the tunnel system that was basically a maze and took me well over 30 mins to find the way out. Vietcong was also the game that got me interested in the history of the Cold War and is why I've started a collection of Cold War era weapons and equipment. I loved using the M16A1 in this game, but also seeing the progression from WWII weapons to more modern equipment. Trying to hit the sniper in the beginning of Vietcong with the M1 Carbine was a treat when you finally got him. Would have been nice to see the M14 in the original game and have one of the soldiers complain about it.
i agree that it is a downgrade, though i am fine with urban enviroments, but yeah Vietcong 1 is better, though Vietcong 2 has it's moments also 0:04 i love that you included AMG's message about '83 lol, like seriously it's such a bad decision, they should have focused on '83 more than IGI and THEN finish working on IGI, also i would love to see a GOM mod for '83 including bot support
im dealing with this same exact thing right now, i am baffled by how horrible vietcong2 is. The enemies dont show their heads so you cant shoot them, yet they can hit you with fully automatic aimbot.. And your guns are inaccurate as well. Its literally impossible
You can check out Line Of Sight Vietnam and Elite Warriors Vietnam made by the same guys who developed the Deadl Dozen games if you want an experience reminicent of the first Vietcong.
Played through this a few years back and holy shit the turret level on the boat almost made me ragequit and uninstall, had to just retry enough times to remember every single ememy spawn to have enough hp to survive

Btw the vietcong 2 probably tried to make references to Full Metal Jacket but yeah it's a downgrade. There are some extra installment for the Vietcong too the first alpha and purple haze, maybe worth if you try.

Yeah I'd heard back then then that the second game was really not nearly as good. I don't know if they changed dev teams or not, but it looks/feels like the passion just isn't there. The first game really rewarded exploration for the sake of it. It's clear they had, well, passion for the first one. There's so much stuff that doesn't *need* to be there, but it is anyway because it sets the tone of it and provides atmosphere and lets you experience the environment without being under direct threat, and that's just fantastic. It seems based on what you've shown the second one is missing a lot of that. Speaking of the WWII rifles and pistols, etc., they were used by VC, particularly early on. For a while 8mm Kurz ammunition was pretty damn common there. Pretty crazy to think about really, but those 'transition' periods in history are as fascinating to me as macabre lost-cause sorts of conflicts like Vietnam and WWI. Thanks again for your work bro

i recently played through vietcong, loved it, then downloaded vietcong 2... holy hell. Vietcong 2 might be the ACTUAL worst singleplayer shooter ever made. I truly believe that. I could write a book on it. If you want more vietcong1 try MARINE HEAVY GUNNER (really derpy horrible graphics, but the adventure itself ends up being quite memorable)
Yeah.. i remember when i was playing Waterstation map and it had out of map glitch, so i went in a car and glitched out of the map, and i was behind big mountains with a sniper and killed everyone, no one could catch me. This game literally made my childhood and still holds special place in my heart until this day, even after 12 years
It was a huge downgrade not gonna lie... But the way I liked the online was a once in a lifetime thing.. Never felt the same way about any other on line game
its typically said as MAC V real group very interesting story's i think the only game since to feature them in any way since is the S.O.G prairie fire DLC for ARMA 3
Wait did you say There were Canadians as part of the coalition? Hmm we never deployed to Vietnam, unless you count those Canadians that went south of the border and volunteered for the us military
@@Tantwo lol! well, if there were any there, it'd be interesting to learn about. In '94, there was an attempt to have a monument built in Ottawa to commemorate the 147 Canadians that died/went missing in the war, but parliament refused the project since those Canadians were serving the US. So, a veterans association got together and paid for it themselves - it's in Windsor, Ontario.
I remember being ultra dissapointed with this game as a 16 year old kid after playing like 5 years of VIetcong: Fist Alpha. Gotta say I never played singleplayer in both games. Only Multiplayer (Online) I dont play Singplayers in FPS. In VC 1 i was in the "damp ::" clan that made all those nice small (and some bigger) range/skill fights maps. Also Number 1 CTF on Stream, Danang and Port ;)
Sorry to be negative, I had fun playing this game, not as much as the 1st game but I still had fun

VC 1 was more "quality over quantity", in some missions you barely had contact with the enemy - but you had to be on your guard all the time, because of traps, and hidden objects/ammo/weapons-caches, that were worth discovering. It was a huge downgrade not gonna lie... But the way I liked the online was a once in a lifetime thing.. Never felt the same way about any other on line game
1:27 what 💀
Need a Vietcong 3 in my life.
one can only dream
its typically said as MAC V real group very interesting story's
i think the only game since to feature them in any way since is the S.O.G prairie fire DLC for ARMA 3
Call of Duty Black Ops too
damn thought so
It was ok, but not as good as the first one. I enjoyed the FN and MAT 49, but it felt clunky compared to the first. Missions weren't very exciting...
check out Mud and Blood recon, it's one of my favorite vietnam games. its pretty brutal
i'll be sure too
ok 2:58 got a laugh out of me...
Singlplayer was not soo good, but multyplayer ist beter that vc1..i was Play 8 Years multyplayer!great allstar-clan
Man I find this shit so fascinating

Wait did you say There were Canadians as part of the coalition? Hmm we never deployed to Vietnam, unless you count those Canadians that went south of the border and volunteered for the us military
I'm going based off what wikipedia told me, chances are i'm completely wrong. but maybe they sent one special forces guy over who knows lmfao
Vietcong 1 is the best made by czech company, vietcong 2 was Bought by some rich boys and they made this bs
:(
damn that's a shame, pretty sure 2K czech made Mafia 1 and 2 but not the 3rd which is why it sucked

that's too many numbers
I remember being ultra dissapointed with this game as a 16 year old kid after playing like 5 years of VIetcong: Fist Alpha. Gotta say I never played singleplayer in both games. Only Multiplayer (Online) I dont play Singplayers in FPS. In VC 1 i was in the "damp ::" clan that made all those nice small (and some bigger) range/skill fights maps. Also Number 1 CTF on Stream, Danang and Port ;)
M-14...
F-111 is my fav

I like these game reviews
thanks man, I have fun making them
"i'm not going to say it's a bad game" well actually it is so don't be afraid to tell it
you gotta be delicate when critising nostalgia, hence why I went lightly on it
