    I have the R5C and R3 for video work only. The R3 is so underrated with full frame and IBIS-- plus the best built in EVF on the market. It's a handheld beast for filming!

      @@Josh_Sattin I hear you, the decision for me was about speed. So many topics are brought up on UA-cam, but speed at which you can work is huge for the clients I work with.
      I chose the R3 over the Red Komodo and C70, the R5C covers the R3’s weaknesses with its cinema features.

      People hated on it because it has 24MP not knowing that it has very good low light and DR. The battery life is the really good too.

    Been wanting this camera for a couple years and finally got it 2 weeks ago. I'm primarily a video shooter and the video specs was exactly what I was looking for but it also needed to be rugged and stack up against the elements while having amazing battery life. Worth it!

    Amazing camera and as you mention video specs are crazy good, zero rolling shutter zero blackout evf it’s a beast.

    I have two negatives to share about filming with the R3. 1) in clog you have to keep the iso at 100, it gets crazy noise on all clog footage above 400 ISO. HDR PQ ISO performance is much better-- you can push it to 3200 easy in PQ. (those are the two 10 bit options) Also iso performance works well in normal mode (8 bit) 2) the Sensor really runs red, I had to make a custom lut to balance out the red in the image to pair it with the R5C (which has perfect color balance out of camera).
    a few more pros, best EVF on the market, I use it so much on sunny days when filming. battery life and built quality are perfect. Also you can customize the buttons so its almost identical to the R5C so working with both cameras simultaneously is easy (you can make the Shutter button the record button) things like that.
    the C70 is heavier, not full-frame, loose flip out screen, no EVF, NO IBIS. It all depends on what work people do, the c70 does have internal ND-- I just will keep saying this, once you start filming with an electronic EVF that you can put your eye too, its turns on, pull your eye away it goes off. There is no going back from that for me-- I need that on every camera I film with moving forward. I'm excited for you Josh, your apart of a small family of R3 filmmakers ;)

      This comment makes no sense to me at all.
      First there is no C.LOG on the R3 just C.LOG 3 and the option to use C.LOG 2 if you shoot raw - I use Canon's Cinema Raw Development to export RAW footage in C.LOG 2. Note: DR is limited to just about 12 stops by the bit depth so C.LOG 2 is not adding a lot. I shoot everything at minimum of ISO 800 and there is no "crazy noise" when shooting C.LOG 3.
      Second if your using C.LOG 3 you will not have access to HDR PQ settings.
      (Canon Log 3 = OFF HDR PQ = OFF) = Video output of 8bit 4:2:0, REC 709 H.264
      (Canon Log 3 = OFF HDR PQ =ON) = Video output of 10 bit 4:2:2, REC 2020 H.265
      (Canon Log 3 = ON HDR PR = OFF) = Video output of 10 4:2:2, REC 709, 2020 and Cinema Gamut H.265
      All Raw footage on the R3 is 12bit.
      Very strange comment and even more strange is the "likes"?

      @@Ramage7070 to clarify, when I said clog I meant clog3( it’s the only log the camera has)

      @@HenryOrtlip Still confused about C.LOG and ISO 100. Are you using expanded ISO range? Again not sure why you are seeing crazy noise above 100 ISO, the base ISO of C.LOG 3 is 800. Are you using Canon LUT's when grading the footage? If so what LUT are you using as your starting point?

    • @HenryOrtlip
      @HenryOrtlip 2 роки тому

      @@Ramage7070 I find it confusing as well! Lol. I know the base iso for log is 800, and I had it at- but experienced a lot of noise. Even the R3 manual says you may experience noise in clog3. I ran extensive tests and have decided to to just keep iso low 100-200. I’m using canon luts. 33 grade CG,clo3 to bt709 wide Dr.

    Great video Josh! I’ve owned the R3 for nearly a year now and it’s the best all around “video” camera I’ve owned. It’s not the best at one specific thing, but it’s great at almost everything.
    I own the C70 as well and I’ve just found the R3 to look so much cleaner and if I need a softer look, it’s as easy as an overlay in post. I swear there’s something different or special that Canon is doing here with the R3 tech and sensor for video. When you use it, you’ll know what I’m taking about. The only downside was the price, but after a year, it can easily pay itself off 🎥

    Really considering trading in my R5C for the R3. I own a C70 and I want B cam that's faster to use. Only thing that I am worried about would be the 4k codecs coming off the R3. If I need a cinema focused camera, I pretty much always grab my C70 over the R5C. I'd be curious to hear your thoughts on dynamic range (future video). Possibly comparing dynamic range in 4k and raw to the 4k and raw codecs on the R5C. If you can't get your hands on a R5C for comparison, even hearing your thoughts on it would be nice. Thanks man!

  • @kylehessling2679
    @kylehessling2679 2 роки тому +2

    With the R5 and R3 you almost always have to shoot Raw if your wanting the best dynamic range. The ability to have clog 2 in resolve gives you 1-2 stops extra in the shadows and even more if you use some denoising! I would think that the R3 raw would even be a bit less noisy than the R5 so that would be cool to see tested! I ended up getting a 2TB cf card for my R5 because I was sick of the crippled h.265 dynamic range!

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 роки тому

      I definitely plan on testing out the raw. The file sizes are just so massive!

    • @kylehessling2679
      @kylehessling2679 2 роки тому

      @@Josh_Sattin Definitely agree with you there! A company named Zitay makes a cf express type b to m.2 ssd adapter that I picked up which is clunky while shooting but very convenient and cheap for storing editing raw files! I also picked up a 2tb cf express on a crazy discount and it works wonderfully. The 12 bit is totally worth it in my opinion though, tons more dynamic range, and resolves noise reduction is much better than anything a camera can do! The raw is also much easier to edit on PC if you enable GPU raw decode in the preferences of resolve!

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 роки тому

      The Angelbird cards I mentioned are crazy cheap. $180 for 512GB. I'm not so much worried about the CF cards, just overall storage cost after shooting. In terms of editing, my Mac Studio can take anything I throw at it. I know everyone has different computing power though.

    • @Ramage7070
      @Ramage7070 2 роки тому

      While it is true you can select C.LOG 2 from the RAW footage there is no increase in DR because it is being limited by the bit depth. Gerald Undone and others have dug into this.

    Hey man, awesome review and always curious to hear your thoughts on gear. I've also eyed the R3 since it came out, almost bought it a few months ago but ended up with the R5C instead. Quick question for you though, is the Angelbird SE card handling the codec and high frame rates (4k 120p) okay? The write speed is considerably lower on that model card, I thought it would drop frames for sure! Thx

    • @Josh_Sattin
      @Josh_Sattin  2 роки тому

      Thanks! The card seems to work okay for me. I haven't done extensive testing on 4K120 yet though. Minimum write speed of the card is 800 MBps. The R3 specs says it only needs 400 MBps write speed for 6K60 Raw or 4K120. 4K120 is 1880 Mbps (235 MBps).

    Really like your reviews and it is the first I actually comment on.
    After a few weeks with the R3 I have to say I am quite disappointed and use the R5C again whenever possible. The video Image quality is no comparison.The R5C is sharper, has better dynamic range, cleaner Image together with many codec and menu options. Unfortunately no ibis and mediocre AF, so I sometimes have to use the R3, for example on the gimbal.
    Its Clog3 though is barely usable in some dark scenes (some shadows it cannot handle at all), lots of noise also after Canon LUT, does not match Eos Cinema Wide DR Profile at all and needs heavy noise reduction and dark blacks in post, with all the problems associated with that.
    Nobody is talking about that and it is a real dealbreaker for me. Similar results with R6 and from what I hear with the R5. Any ideas what could be done apart from the usual advice (Overexpose, S35 crop, neat video/resolve noise reduction, too low iso)? The R5c and C200 are fine, even with NR turned off. The R3 does not offer any clog NR in camera.
    The R3 4k is very detailed, 2k is quite soft but not losing ANY quality in 200P, where Sony A7Siii is pretty much unusable in any professional production. 8 bit looks fine but is not the reason I bought this camera. Maybe the next R5C has wifi, Canon AF ii and Ibis together with better battery life, it would be perfect…I am expecting at least an AF Firmware update for Slowmotion, just like the C300 had it, hopefully soon.
