#canon #videography #canonr7
I do currently own both, but deciding to only keep one. Hint, I am watching your video. There are some subtle difference, like dark is more dark with the R3, noise level is also more controlled in low light (that's given cuz of the full frame), but the price and bigger form factor proposition, R7 is far better value. I am leaning on keeping the R7 after watching your video. Thank you.
Own the R7 since couple of month and was nice to see this comparison. Can confirm, like the stabe and also look of vid out of it. Really an underrated creator camera for sure, just a better verity of lenses would be great. Adapting still ef-s and ef Glas…
R7 keeps impressing me. I choose to shoot video with my R7 over my R6, especially with the tascam xlr2d and my Sennheizer 416. I originally was going to pick up a C70, but I can't justify it based on the performance I get from the R7.
I also love to shoot with the R7 over the R6 (overheated on me 3 times already). R6 is now my C Cam. Debating if I should get rid of it to pick up another R7....
First comparison shot, and I already got it wrong!!! Lol. Damn R7, coming in strong..
Great comparison test, Josh. Considering the R3 is a flagship camera. With the extra bells and whistles, The R7 clearly is a good camera considering price differences. Thanks Man......
You're welcome.Thanks for watching!
Buy two R7, EF 100-400, EF-S 10-22, RF 35, put it in a small backpack with a good stereo mic + some tripod or buy the R3 and make a pinhole camera with the body cap for 6000 $ / EUR :)
Thanks for the comparison. I am glad that I preordered the R7 in March (or so) and have access to it. A good solution for a two-body-shooter (maybe) who likes high quality output (technically) and needs only moderate speed (except AF, but precision is worth more). If the R6 ii is ergonomically compatible and has similar size, maybe this would be my 2nd body or it will be an R7 - M50 is quite good but a little bit different.
great video. the R7 looks like a very capable video camera.
Thanks Jared! Yeah, it keeps impressing me.
Would you recommend the R7 as a b cam to the R5 for interviews? I don’t have the funds for another R5 and the R7 seems tempting…
Own the R7 and R6. R7 is an amazing camera. I use it more than my R6 but the R6 takes absolutely amazing photos. A bit richer in colour than my R7. Could be the larger size of pixels compared to the R7. I really do think that the R7 is an under rated camera by quite a few out there. My only wish is that it was a bit larger. Also a grip option would be nice. I don't shoot video but its good to know that either camera takes great videos. This video has also shown how good the R7 is compared to the current flagship Canon. Nice video.
Josh, again, thank you for the R7 videos. I got this camera because I started to learn more about filmmaking and I'm learning how to do cinematic vlogs. I got it with the 18-150 lens which is not that good for vlogging although I don't mind investing a bit more for a RF 16mm 2.8. Do you recommend that one for vlogging and cinematic shots? I would be holding the camera with a GorillaPod.
You're welcome. Here is my review on the RF 16mm: ua-cam.com/video/pQQBBgeCqhs/v-deo.html
Hey Josh
Love your videos. Could I get a recommendation for a good wedding video camera. I do have access to some Cannon EF lenses, and would benefit from good auto focus and low light shooting ability. Doesn't nessarly need to be a Cannon though. Thanks for any advice, and keep putting out the great content.
Really surprised by how similar the two images look, which ultimately is what matters most. If you shoot primarily at 4K 30p or below, save your $$ and just get the R7. The only reason I recently bought the FX3 instead of the FX30 was because I didn’t want to lug around a second set of crop lenses for wide angle filming. Do you think the lack of quality lenses for the RF-S mount will deter people from the R7?
I think the limited lens options are part of the decision making process, especially wide angle. The lens options (APSC and FF) for Sony are so much better.
Is there a ef to e speedbooster that you would recommend ?
@@lorenzehernandez2602 you have a video on this channel about that
Great Comparison once more. You still seduce me to get the R7 but I am still waiting for the R6 mark ii.
R6 II is just a rumor at this point. I'm obviously super curious to see if that turns out to be true.
@Alfred Knödler Indeed I am curious to see if Canon will fix some of the limitations they arbitrarily imposed on the R6. We all want that silly 30minute recording limit gone, All-I, and better heat dispersion
@@cjm8160 My Canon dealer told me last week that the R6 mark ii would be announced this week and have no time limits and be 2.800 euro. He said it would ship in late November and do 180p in HD. He held this camera already in his hand but maybe I was stoned when he said this. The week already started haha
@@alfredknodler540 any chance 120fps in 4K?
@@upcomingvillain concerning my trader it has two SD card slots and this might mean no 120p in 4k
Canon didn't fully swing the cripple hammer as hard as usual for the R7. Coming from the T7i and knowing I can never afford a full frame with the features Id like for hybrid shooting, I got the R7 and it's crazy how much more advanced it feels given the few years between them. I know theres debate on lenses regarding censor sizes too but my EF and EF-S lenses both seem to work seemlessly. Unless you're a pro and maybe really geeky ass amateur, you can get the r7 and never get an RF lens, lol. I do have a question though because I never had log access - I used to use cinestyle on the T7i. Would you know how much practical difference there is between a log profile like Clog3 and Raw video (or log vs cinestyle for that matter?), minus the obvious fact like file sizes, memory needed to edit, compression, etc? Does raw video give you much more leeway to grade like Raw vs jpg photos or is it a lot closer?
I haven't used cinestyle, but anytime you can shoot in a log profile, you will get more dynamic range out of the camera. Raw will give you a little more dynamic range and flexibility than log, but it comes with the cost of extra noise too. Check out the videos that I did on raw in the R3 and R5C:

@@Josh_Sattin ahhhh interesting ok will do thx
great videos on the r3! would love to see more !
Should I get the R7 or a R6? I already have a Rp for for stills.
Hi Josh. R5C vs R3. Which one handle the noise better in lowlight?
Unfortunately I don't have the R5C to compare.
@@stianstokka9584 nope. R5C with native iso handle noise better than R3 for video
Your comparisons are excellent. Would love to see a comparison with the first canon dslr video capable 5dmkii with the R's
That would be fun!
Inersting fact. At 16k iso the imagines look prety similar. And i mean the R7 even if it has more noise, the imagine is still pretty sharp and with davci denoise you can recover that noise and the image is still amazingly sharp. Even at +4/5 stops, image detail at R7....what an amazing camera for apsc
Hi Josh thanks for this comparison.
👍🏻☀️🏝☀️☀️🌴🌊📸
R7 are they the same as the 5dmk2 batterys ?
also it does 7k video ? so how long is that one in minutes ?
Would love to see the R7's line skipped 4K 60 vs the R5/R6 if you ever rent them out for a vid or something!
I bet the 4K60 would look pretty similar in the R7 and R5 since they are both line skipped, but I do believe that the 4K60 is oversampled (not line skipped) in the R6.
The r6 has the best 4k 60p out of the three.
R5 4k/60fps in crop mode is very good. In FF mode it's worse than R6.
Hi Josh, I'm looking to buy the R7 and thinking about the lens. As I'm doing weddings and events videography, how about Canon RF 24mm F/1.8?
Unfortunately I haven't tried that lens yet.
Check out sigma art 18-35 f1.8. no IS but r7 has ibis and it works pretty well, that is a heavy lens but you will be getting equivalent range of 3 primes at a much lower cost , note this is a crop sensor lens
@@YogevMontekyo yes i was thinking about that lens, but the autofocus is pretty loud, especially because I'm using a mic. In some certain situations, silent autofocus motors are important for me
@@zeljkotodorovic8193 that's a good point.
Unless you are using the on camera built-in mic, i think in a wedding scenario with ambient noise of crowd u should be fine. There are some videos over this specific issue. If you are filming small and quite weddings, perhaps this might be an issue after all. I suggest u try that if you know someone with that lens. The optics of this specific old lens is very good, it is sharper compared to my canon native EF-L zoom lenses. Bokeh is slightly less appealing to me compared to equivalent canon, but overall i can say i use this one more with the r7.
@@YogevMontekyo im using rode Pro rycote mic (stereo version) on my camera, there are some short moments on wedding and church ceremonies where is only 1 person speaking to the newlyweds. I guess there would be a problem only, otherwise i'd really consider this lens seriously. But again, not sure if that sound is really going to be captured by my mic
Jokes on you, I'm watching in 720 on my phone. Lovely video, good info to have!
Josh, do you still plan to do a comparison between the R7 and the C70? It might be a bit absurd, or maybe a "can it be a B-cam" type thing, but I'd like to see it!
Here you go: ua-cam.com/video/pH6K58e-qwQ/v-deo.html
@@Josh_Sattin Wow, thanks!! For some reason I wasn't seeing that in your list of videos.. Strange. Anyway, I'll watch it right now, thanks again!
Do you know the sensor readout speed on the R7.? (In ms) also is there a workaround for the rolling shutter intensity on the 4k fine option? The only thing I’ve found is going down to the 4k non fine at the cost of lower quality
I don't know the readout speed in terms of milliseconds. Unfortunately the only workaround for less rolling shutter is to use the line skipped 4K.
You did this comparison using the same lenses on both cameras?
All of the tests were done with the RF 15-35. The only thing I used different lenses for was the intro and side by side image quality comparisons. They were done with the RF 14-35 and RF 15-35.
You also did this with the r5 and i said the saem thing
that i think the af on the r7 is actually a tiny bit faster than the r5
if you set playback to .25 on youtube and watch from here, you can see that the r7 is maybe a few frames faster than the r3
7:27 and 7:36
They had different lenses during that test. I should have switched the lenses and re did the test but either way, the autofocus is good.
@@Josh_Sattin What lens did you use for the r7?
Because the af was really fast.
The r3 have the possibility to shoot in raw, the difference is here. When shooting in raw, the DR is near to the c70. If you shoot only in clog3 even the c70 and the r7 will have same image quality and DR , + better AF and stabilisation on the R7…
It's not the marketing department of Canon that's making me buy this camera. It's you :D
Haha. Well, as I said, I've just been really impressed with the camera!
@@Josh_Sattin I am just concerned if my current EF glass will be able to resolve that 30MP sensor. Currently my main lenses are the Sigma 18 - 35, Canon EF 50mm 1.8 and the EF 85mm f1.8.
@@jrc1156 your 18-35 will be fine but your 50 and 85 will likely struggle, most notably the 85 because of its very aged lens design
Is 4K 60 fps cropped the same quality as 4K fine on the R7?
No. 4K60 crop mode is a 1-1 readout and has an additional 1.81x crop from the 4K Fine. 4K Fine is a full sensor readout with a 7K oversample.
Hello Josh, could you tell me which settings would you rather use for shooting video with the R7 in order to avoid as much as rolling shutter?
There are sooo many differents settings that it's getting difficult to know how to shoot.
Obviously if I'm shooting still images I'd choose the oversampled 4K mode but what about if I'm walking around? 4K 60 ? 4K cropped ? oversampled 4K ? Also, is the digital stabilization worth it in your opinion?
In my case I'm using the holy 18-35 Sigma art!
Cheers from a French viewer!
I haven't tested these all out for rolling shutter, but I would guess that 4K Fine will give you the worst rolling shutter performance.
thanks
You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
You can't really compare image quality on a heavily compressed Phone watching on UA-cam.
I just don't like crop sensors, it mess up all you lens focal lengths and bokeh. Plus the R3 offers a whole lot more as a hybrid camera.
Maybe my eyes are bad 🤣 r7 looks way more better
the one and only downside of the R7 is the lack of a batterygripp, shame, shame, shame on Canon for that🔨🔨🔨cripel hamer again.
