WHO WE ARE
SkyFi Audio is a small startup business specializing in the purchase, reconditioning, and reselling of select high end audio equipment. We only buy equipment that we admire and are passionate about. No mid-fi, no gimmicks, and no junk.
Each piece of equipment is cosmetically restored and fully tested in our well-equipped lab by an engineer with 30+ years of experience in the HiFi world. If it does not meet or exceed the original manufactures specifications, it will not be sold. We are very selective about the equipment we purchase, focusing on mostly analog, high-build quality, American, and European built units.

Back in the 70s I got a used turntable, it did not play well at all, so I took it in to a shop in Seattle, and the guy was showing me what he had to do to set it up right. I was surprised at that time he had a test record also and an Oscilloscope. I did not know there was that much to set up a turntable, I think it cost me about $40, a lot of money back then. But I bet it's about $200 or more now. Prob a lot more. I wish I had my old Hi Fi stuff now ... I traded it all for a Harley.
The white plastic protractor is supposed to be put on the spindle to adjust overhang. That's what the hole at the top is for. Amazing
Remove the transport screws then start tipping the thing on it's side, nice.
If it performs as well as it looks -- certainly inspired by Linn -- and with the right cartridge the setup should be a huge hit with folks who want their systems to have a classic, vintage look. Nice vid.
My OCD kicked in. You're seriously heavy handed 😅
Grammes are a unit of mass, Newtons are a unit of force (specifically weight in this case).
The relationship between the two varies because of changes in gravity, due to where you are on the planet.
Scales measure weight, even if they give readings in units of mass.
I realize hes very well linformed and like most guys too stubborn to read instructions, but id really have been looking for those feet long before I started dragging this (expensive-!!) rig around on the table
Nice video, I have a 2 xperience classic that I bought over 10 years ago and is still running strong. I see the biggest upgrade they made since then is on the back of the tonearm. The best thing about pro ject is if a part does go bad you can find almost every part, from the platter, the belts, bearings, whatever on the internet..
I suspect the thinner larger belt is for 45 and 78rpm using the lower larger part of the motor pulley (so it requires a belt change to run 45 rpm and it is electronically adjusted to 78rpm. The use of a larger belt also means the 33rpm belt is not over stretched on the lower larger dia section of the pulley.
Really enjoyable video. Looks to be a nice turntable. I might consider it if my trusty 50 year old Thorens 150 gives up the ghost.
Fernando had his Starbucks before this vid. HIFI flying all around. I dig it.
Fernando, I saw that you showed the Fozgometer but didn't use it in your setup. Curious as to why not. My ProJect Classic has been great and nice to see so many similarities between mine and this new model. I really wish I could do the speed changes with the little buttons which mine does not allow. Also discovered that my dustcover was picking up low frequency energy in my room (even when closed) so have to remove it every time I'm playing vinyl.
Cleaning the test record would be a good idea. and using the cueing device would help prevent damage to the groove.
Your spot on Paul .
I'm thinking about getting one of these as I haven't been happy with my VPI build and the "customer service" at VPI.
I find Pro-Ject's Xtension 9 Evolution a real stunner, in part because I prefer 'old school' wood plinths and classic looks. To me a lot of modern TTs look like something you'd run a DNA sample through in a CSI lab...functionally superior but hideous to the point of fugly...
Beautiful!!😍😍
Gloves are to avoid finger print marks/oil. Similar to what Roksan do with their TT's. Nice video.
he is joking ....gloves are for cold fingers
Beautiful looking turntable only problem in my opinion is it is belt drive and not direct drive with quartz lock for speed accuracy.
lol
Yep and they are noisy
@@sbwlearning1372 My Technics SL-Q2 is super quiet and will blow away the new junk their making.
@@vals8062 What he means is that the table will rumble and it likely carries up to the platter as it's directly coupled to the platter, whilst belts isolate the motor from the platter. I run belt drive, btw.
The Technics stuff is so badly overrated. My olde Pioneer PL51 direct drive of 40years is better put together than the £4000 GAE ltd edition. The new Technics are often warped in the platter and have crappy arm lifts. Belt drives and suspended ones are alot vetter sounding... they can loosen up and boogie for one thing! I still use the Pioneer for some dance music genres where it excels but for 80% of my listening the Thorens and Projects satisfy me alot more
The other spool is for 45 RPM, the little key is for changing the belt from 33 to 45 and vice-versa...
Gotcha, thanks!! I think the other spool is for 78rmp. How would you use the key?
Excellent, detailed video. Thanks for posting!
N in the 'International System of Units' is a unit of force (newtons) 1 N = 1 kg x 1 m/s^2
Speed change missed and you chucking the "KEY TO THE KINGDOM" away while you put grease on the belt , surprised you don't know this .
Pro-Ject stuff varies wildly, I've had the RPM's and they are more like MDF toys rather than a serious piece of HiFi, at the other end of the spectrum we have the Evo series, a totally different story...and above that we have EAT turntables (Pro Ject and EAT are related).
p.s
No need for spindle bearing oil?
A lot of tables these days come with the spindle bearing oiled so no need to deal with it. VPI does not, and has you putting a drop in and note when you did and once a year, put a fresh drop in the spindle bearing.
I have the Rega P6 and it came pre-oiled and ready to go, except for the platter, adding the cartridge as I didn't buy mine with a cart as I already had a decent one. All I had to do was remove the insert that raided up the sub platter just enough to not rest on the bottom of the bearing well during shipment, install the cartridge, and plug in the Neo power supply and it was more or less ready, oh, as this table, the counter weight had to be installed.
Can one fit a different tonearm on the Classic Evo? The VTA adjustment is possible but a real pain. Just found your channel Fernando and I'm loving it!
Nice video. Funny how you start off mentioning mixing with an MC240. My Classic SB (with pre-installed Ortofon Red MC)is mixed with an MC240. Specifically bought this model because of the the Linn "look".
Hate the fishing string, just don't get it. Went with the Rega P3 and the exact cartridge. Red, love it.
Next time read the manual so you would not have to guess or improvise.
feet adjustable for leveling-?, not tightened up like a lugnut. On something this expensive im sorry but im gonna look at the instructions just to be sure of something I wasnt aware of -
Very interesting. Could possible remake sub chassics and put springs instead of elastomers
Its NOT cheating to look at the manual especially on something this expensive, ITS SMART. Im still perplexed at why after many decades of developement the high end table still insist on using a piece of fishing line and a weight to adjust anti-skating, seems very crude for such a precision device as a tone arm.
That's exactly right they just cheap out on it. I'll never buy one again
The alternative anti skate methods are magnetic, which doesn't work so well, or springs, which degrade sound quality
The anti skate was off some it was pulling to the center! Was it set right?
Carbon fiber on the tonearm is just there for effect, make it look more exotic than it really is - its not actually a carbon fiber tone arm at its heart just aluminum - but nothing really wrong with that.
I have the same turntable that came with the Ortofon Red MC cartridge. I also purchased a matching Pro-ject phono box DS2 USB. Right from the first set up I noticed a slight but perceptible hum. The hum was mitigated by moving a my modem/router away from the phono amp. I couldn’t remove the hum completely so I decided to purchase a EAT linear power supply. This particular unit has two linear power supplys in it which allows me to replace both PSUs for the EVO and DS2 phono amp. I did a little research and found out that the maker/engineer of EAT also makes high end turntables and just happens to be the wife of the owner of Pro-ject. The products are also a perfect marriage as the hum is completely gone. In fact, I can place my modem/router on top of the phono amp and there is absolutely gone. So if your customers want to eliminate some crappy PSUs look into a EAT Linear power supply. www.europeanaudioteam.com/en/eat-lps-linear-power-supply-wp000037.html
Or just buy a turntable designed properly that doesn't need aftermarket accessories to make it perform as it should
The correct name for the anti-skate is a bias compensator.
Powinieneś w miejsce woła obsługiwać kierat ! A nie takie cacko. Łapy masz precyzyjne jak u goryla ! Czy każdy sprzęt po twojej "robocie" jest uszkodzony ??
A perfect example of how not to proceed. Instead of opening the manual first and familiarizing himself with the individual components and how to assemble them, he throws the manual away as unnecessary and then guesses what to use for what. A real thinker. Cemeteries and emergency rooms in hospitals are full of them.
Exactly. This is the most frustrating unboxing I've ever seen.
U-Turn tables are really good value for money🙂
Ortofon in Scandinavia. Special version of 2m red. More expensive one comes with ortofon quintet red
The special version of the 2M Red meant for Pro-Ject is the 2M Silver.
Good to know. Interesting how it depends on the market. Thanks for sharing Jorn.
Pro-ject really needs a better hinge design for the dust covers.
Again on the "plastic gizmo" - read the instructions-!!! lol
What are your thoughts on that swinging anti skate counter weight? I noticed that it continues to swing long after the record is playing. Does that have any effect on the sound?
Cheap and nasty implementation. Gets in the way.
This type of anti skate affects the sound less than a spring type (which are prone to resonance), and works better than a magnetic type (which are prone to hysteresis).
mN = milli-Newton, or, 1/1000th of a Newton. It's basically a measure of weight. 1 Newton = 3.597 ounces, so, 1 mN = 0.003597 ounces.
Why on earth didn't you read the instructions first?!
Real men don't read manuals. If we f.. up, we go back, re-evaluate and try again...or we buy a new one. :D
I read the manual but I still had find a UA-cam video to learn how to set up the tracking. That plastic scale had me pulling out my hair.
No kidding! At least skim the manual. He might have saved time. I also felt he was a bit rushed and too rough with the handling it.
@@puciohenzap891 amen. I’ll watch a few videos on it while waiting for it to ship then go straight at it
The manual is not that informative and sometimes misleading. VTA screw in manual is shown in exact opposite side :)
Would the tracking force change if the record mat was removed? Or the thickness of the record?
In short - yes. Depends on thickness ofc, but with supplied plastic scale, you should measure the wtf by putting scale directly on the metal platter, then it is really accurate.
The second groove is for 78rpm
This guy needs to be more careful when setting up audio equipment !
This guy need to be leaving audio equipment well alone.
@@marcmarcello981 Ha ha Me and my naim 500 series will be very happy leaving these types of service people well alone .
POOR MAN'S LINN SONDEK LP12?
handling this $2300 turntable like a bull in a china shop
Have you seen his Thorens video? It's like a demolition derby... crash, bang, wallop...
This video seems more like a reason to never buy anything from this place.
It’s ok looking. But that on off button is awful. I would also rather the platter turn when you move the tonearm. I thought about getting a new turntable but after seeing this I’ll stick with vintage.
Maybe the tonearm has an aluminum tube for rigidity and carbon fiber to dampen resonance?? curious.
Quite clumsy handling of a piece of hi fi equipment.
This proves you need to read the manual 😅
Anti skate didnt not perform well as adjusted, oughtta be freaking perfect for this kind of money, hinges should be self holding. Always amazes me the little things they leave out on this stupid expensive stuff
Better turntables at the price cheapened out for essentially a thousand pound turntable
Opens the box and smacks the delicate main bearing shaft onto the table, then proceeds to rough handle this "precision instrument" througout the rest of the video. He will need his test equipment to help repair the damage he inflicted on the turntable. Does this guy actually have a hi-fi business?
New turntable that can perform? What about Technics? A good direct drive will aways be on time.
In my opinion Technics has great motors but the tonearm is...what it is (Yes I know there is the EPA100 and others with swappable wands) That said, a new 1200MK7 is a no brainer for a simple to use, reliable turntable.
Not sure how the Pro Ject tonearms sound/track, though.
Yeah but flat as a pancake. Boring.
@@carmenandthedevil2804 Yes, in comparison to decks that cost 5x more than the technics. You wont find better at its price point.
They copied Thorens. I don't mind if they come out with a modern turntable with a vintage look but at least be original while doing so.
Great demo. One little issue I had - Your casual treatment of the unboxing process gave me a slight cringe reaction. I felt like you were banging things around a bit, and ignoring instructions and basic physical details. This particular item became B stock the moment I watched the vid. Thank you, however, for the thorough evaluation of the item!
That's exactly why i chose technics and got rid of belts and anti-skate problems
It would be nice if you did a pretest before you shot the video. Somewhat aggravating to see you stumble.
YOU SHOULD READ FIRST !!!
Great obviously H.Q. unit, even from Utube video. I'd love to find a good+ condition Dual from mid /late '70's. ( highpoint of HiFi to me, at least visual and maybe technical as well )) & compare (actual tech tests) to my 2 year old. thorens TD103a which has VERY classic look, the tonearm looks near exact like the Dual ULM (low mass ) arm.....minor point - my Thorens also has small cutouts in the back for the cables. absurd way to irritate users, very little clearance. and, comment on short tiny wires for the back of Cartridge - I'm 73 couldn't do the thorens wires even thou they look fine, maybe the Ortofon cart uses non standard plug connects .?? > previous I used a '78 Pioneer full auto for 4 decades, still working fine actually. all the doodads like suspended chassis...
Yer after my heart - put it together first, then ( maybe- read the instructions next week )
Typical male of the species. Throw the instructions away, try to put in together, find extra parts, go back to the instructions and put it together the right way. Could have saved yourself some time and frustration by reading the manual first.
Was ist das für ein Idiot? Für was gibt es Bedienungsanleitungen?👎👎👎👎👎😱😱😱😱 Viele Grüße aus Germany
LMAO! What a fing joke 😂
