Fitting an Inconel exhaust to my Porsche GT3 997.2 - Kline Innovation

- I fit a super lightweight Kline Innovation inconel exhaust to my 997.2 911 GT3. It doesn't exactly go to plan, but I get there in the end & now have what I think is one of the best sounding 997 GT3's out there!

I know we should be talking about how awesome the car sounds, but can we take a moment to appreciate the music that’s used in DW videos. Tracks are always pleasing on the ear and work really well with the content. Just feel that needs pointing out.. 😎
Thanks man. It takes me an age to find decent music, so it's much appreciated.
Phil Morrison the most patient impatient man in the UK. Love your dedication and eye for detail Phil. Keep up the great content. Gives us all a break from this on going pandemic crap!!!!!
😄🤘
" I've also lubricated my camera lens quite nicely". You are a thorough lad, Phil. LMAO. Cheers
😄
Loved the AvE reference! Contact!
🤘 One of my fave channels.
Fly by sound was perfect! Just like the main straight at LeMans.....
🤘
These videos are always entertaining. Doesn't matter if you're actually wrenching away or just doing vehicle updates. ✊👍
Thanks man.
I believe Kline and Dundon make the best GT3 exhausts.
I had k&n system, the same, just spent a bit of time sealing the airbox off as you mentioned... it’s open towards the rear/bumper and can take heat from the exhaust. I used a black plastic 5 litre oil bottle, I used roughly half the bottle side cut into an ‘L’ shape to wrap the bottom of the filter/airbox opening, was really easy and sealed it up nicely 👍 I was going to wrap in some heat protection tape but forgot and it didn’t deform or come to any harm after many trackdays in 40+ degrees in Ozz.
Love how easy the GT3;s are to work on, they come apart so easily. Although I am surprised at the seized bolts you came across, Mine were like new, guess that’s UK salty, rainy roads compared to sunny dry, just dusty Oz.
And me. I love the Dundon headers, but wanted to keep the cats. Yeah I was thinking something similar on the K&N 👍
The sound inside the cabin is unreal!
👍
As Phil said "I'll just have a quick clean up" I had a vision of an epic 40 part vlog series and Jay with even less hair.
Haha, it's time will come. It does need looking at properly at some point 😄
@@driftworks Probably justified, it's looking a bit scruffy. 🤪
The sound is damn sexy. I got you very well about the straight pipe. It drives you mad and at the end It doesn´t sound really good. It´s just loud. The inconel exhaust system is what an engine like that really need. I like it.
The proud tips look good with the low offset wheels.. Completes the look..
No video is ever to long Phil 👌👍
👍
Love the crackle on tick over, and on full chat, there are not many better noises that a flat 6, very impressive, looks cool too. Great seeing the slow undoing selection track, proper tool -> vice grips -> chisel -> heat -> grinder !!! The valve works really well, streetcar to a monster in a touch of a button.
Mexico looks chilly, sounds really good with the valves shut, nice
🤓👍
That sounds incredible when opening it up.
Much love!
Cheers 👍
Sounds absolutely amazing! And I personally find the tip protruding appealing. (Initial setup was too much) but the revised center box and tips are spot on as they are but I can also see them being a slightly better fit if they were an inch shorter or so
👍
Man it sounds epic I followed you on the way to home from the Warwick road up to the stratford Road crazy sounding porsche even sitting at the lights 😁 keep up the great vlogs 😎
Thanks man. Will do!
Stalker warning🤣🤣🤣
997 GT3 is peak water cooled 911 IMO. That exhaust sounds simply incredible!
Regarding headers... you should try removing them off a 996 with 177k miles on it. 20 hours labour to remove everything and fit new headers and back boxes (fortunately I had a fixed price agreed)... all bar 3 studs snapped... had to bring a specialist in with a jig to drill them out.
Haha, that sounds like a lot of fun!
The howl is perfect, I can not get enough of cars that sound malevolent. This strikes the balance between noise and sound wonderfully.
Thanks man!
Good job with the disassembly. Can't wait for the sound test and the Phil test.
F1 sound!
Good work mate!! Sounds unreal
Thanks man 👍
Aw man does that sound awsome! Good work Phil.
Thanks man!
Sounds absolutely fantastic Phil, almost F1 like! 👍
Sounds better than an F1.
The V6 Hybrids are not the nicest to listen to!!
@@markwalton8644 I meant F1 of old lol
Give me a F1 V10 anyday 🥰
Many thanks!
Mint exhaust, mint 997 GT3 sounds fantastic. I have same issues with my manifold bolts, I use that same oil spray on my B16's recently fitted. Nice content.
Thanks man 👍
3:08 I agree with all of this. I like stock exhaust and unsilenced intake for my daily and both an unsilenced intake and more agressive exhaust for my fun cars. It's super popular here to just do exhaust but I've never been a fan of that because almost sounds monotone IMO. Induction noises are much more dynamic to throttle position.
🤘
Mate that exhaust system is a work of art! Sounds incredible too😋👍👌👊
Thanks man.
Personal opinion...the tips are the perfect length. I hate seeing exhaust residue on the melted bumper. The sound is fantastic!!!
It's a stock tune car with cats, so it won't make a mess like my E30M3.
Sounds beautiful!!
I actually think they don't extend too far out but I know you are a perfectionist so they are going to get the chop!
🤘
Awesome sound Phil, absolutely awesome.
Cheers 👍
The stick out of the tips is for the manufacturer to show off their name on your rear end. I like it but wish they were black like stock. baby blue beast!
👍
Sounds Glorious.
👍 Cheers
Awesome Video - Awesome car! Thanks for Sharing!
Lovely kit. Just on the exhaust manifold gasket, according to the likes of the legendary tuner A Graham Bell, a step up to the manifold is actually not a problem, in some cases it's considered a good thing. Helps with preventing gas reversion apparently.
Another great warts and all video though. And that sound!!
👍 That''s the idea behind 'porting' the gasket, just incase there was any slight overlap on the head side. It means it only goes bigger into the manifold.
@@driftworks aha, I thought from the Vid you were porting it out for the exhaust, not the head. I'll put my head back down below the parapet 😁
Ya that sounds amazing! I love the 997 GT3 and especially in Riviera blue! In case you haven’t tried it, the best penetrating fluid I have used, and I’ve used a lot, is the liquid wrench with Teflon. Also, if you don’t have any, you need nut extractors with the reverse teeth full stop!
Thanks man.
26:17 exhaust tips stick out a little bit...Next video Phil redesigns the whole exhaust system....lol
😄
Best sounding car in the world.
My AWE system rear silencers looked the same (size and volume) but ran with out any side mufflers and long tube headers with cats more like Dundon then Kline.
🤘
Gotta give Kline Innovation props for calming Phil's OCD. Getting it correct is the motto we all should use in life.
👍
It sounds incredible. I reckon a carbon heatshield to follow the exhaust cut out protruding out to the Kline logos 👌🏻
I did think about whether an extension could sort it. I think it's just too far though.
Awesome video as always.
Thanks man 👍
i think that looks good like that to be fair, sounds insane 👍
🤘
No way, Christian from Kline taught me to TIG weld. Proper cool dude.
😎
No way. I got a pair of Christian Kline underpants off of the market!
Phil seeking perfection as always. Wouldn't be Driftworks otherwise. Concerned the bumper might get burnt though, maybe that's the reason for it sitting out so far from oem?
It still runs cats and a standard tune, so it wouldn't get burnt or sooted 👍
Sounds amazing Phil, looks the part aswell. My triumph Daytona makes a very good induction noise, that "braaaaaaap" never gets old lol xD
🤘
Who remembers Phil's S14 kouki with the exhaust coming out from the side of the car? That thing was mental especially with Keith's Vertex kit.
🤘I have such little footage of that car. What I do is like 480p res.
Loving the music used on the time lapses
👍
Dream car right there...one day!
👍
Blimey ! 1K for sensors ? Is it not as simple as them having a Bosch part number on them ?
I've had bad experience with the 'identical Bosch Lambdas' in the past. Ended up fitting genuine.
Great vid as always 👌, the tips would drive me nuts too.
Thanks 👍
Yeah Americans love a straight pipe. Great video. Well done. Love your work. Sounds awesome
Cheers 👍
I love these videos. I miss my 2010 GT3 which I traded in for a 2019 C4 GTS last year. Have since moved on to a 2017 Turbo S but I still miss that GT3. So many 911s for different occasions. That exhaust sounds amazing too mate
I miss my F40 which I traded for an F50 which I traded for a diesel traktor. The exhaust sounds nice though.
Seeing the fitment of the new tips I instantly thought get a carbon CSL splitter. Adding parts made of carbon makes the car weigh less too.
Less weight = more race
Good logic.😄
I liked the way the first one stuck out. Always nice to destroy a few shins at shows.
The fly buys at night was a nice touch 🤣 sounds absolutely amazing
👍
Agree sounds ace, but the look could be improved..👍
🤘
The porsche sounds amazing 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
🤘
I think the tips look fine, not too far at all. 👍🏻
👍
Must be the massive heat cycles from track etc that does this to the bolts no, or the fact that its rear engined? I had virtually no issues removing a single bolt on my e36 m3 which is twice the age of this car! Anyways, lovely bit of kit!
The issue is all the crap the underbody aero and tyres kicks up there, and as you say the heat down there. Corrodes the metal like a salt spray would.
@@timburton1080 Yeah that makes sense. I was so surprised by my M3, granted, it has only done about 65k miles, but I havent had issues with a single bolt or nut on the car. And I have touched almost everything so far.
@@Doggepp overall found my 911 to be really well put together, but the exhaust does need an eye on. Phil's video has tempted me with some manifolds
@@timburton1080 Get a pallet of WD40 and go for it!
Awesome I like the GT3. They are amazing cars👍👍👍👍👍
🤘
Damn! Damn Phils life what i wanna be on my next life!
My favourite car
👍
Agree it needs a chop, so it kind of follows the rear down & under. Also pretty sure I heard Starky’s Rustler dinging away at one point...😂
Holy crap ! A bag’O’ sand for 4 lambdas !
I’d have tried dropping trr he e exhaust with them in and cutting the boss with a small cutting disk.
Mind you after all that they’ll probably be scrap anyhow.
Stunning sound, but yep agree sticks out abit to much. Your car collection is ridiculous....absolutely amazing!!!
👍 Thanks man.
Pulled the thread out changing the lambda sensor on my boxster yesterday 😄 luckily managed to retap the thread. Why porsche for the new sensors? Are you going to rennsport?
I've learnt the hard way not to mess with Lambda sensors that are 'identical' . What is Rennsport?
@@driftworks its the big porsche show on Sunday at Stowe near silverstone 👍
I guess that sheared crank on the desk is from Chevy Minaj?
That exhaust setup on the 991 was a nice sound, not too raspy. Just right
The String Theory studs look well made, looks like they have flats to save you double nutting them?
It is indeed! Yep they do.
Something comforting about watching a guy pull a rounded bolt from a 100k Porsche GT3 with a pair of vice grips
😂
😄🤘
Much better than straight piping 👌🏿
👍
The modern day Thomas Shelby! With arguably the finest collection of automobiles. Hats off bud.
🤘
Yep, even my OCD is not having those tips sticking out like that, but otherwise a fantastic exhaust system, very nice sound I must say. 👍👍🇬🇧
👍
Superb job Phil, she sounds awesome! will she be ok for track days in the UK?
Cheers. It won't, but this is not my track car. Part of the reason I fitted the exhaust is so i remember that 😄
Favorite engine sounds 😊
😎
That does sound rather good!
🤘
They probably stick out that far to stop the bumper melting when it flames on lol
It doesn't flame, it has cats and a standard tune.
@@driftworks Are you going to shorten them or leave them the way they are?
As I said at the end of the vid they'll be shortened 👍
Sounds awesome! :D
Thanks!
Sounds soooo good.
Thanks man.
Metal stretches when it gets hot too so they extend even further when car is driven. One of the reasons manufacturers align them with the bumper is so that you don't burn your leg when putting groceries in the trunk.
Haha, putting groceries in the back of a 911 maybe detrimental to their use by date.
I love this
Id leave the tips alone, even before you got the replacement back box, but can't deny what you like you like. Your taste in car's is absolutely spot-on with mine which I must say is very very fine indeed! The Porsche 997 GT3 is prob one of my all time Fav. Porsches. So what is that color called that matches the M3 ? I would guess Miami or Mexico Blue from Porsche, but think it might be something else ? Cars rust so fast there,Damn. Where I live in CO , I don't have that issue here even with my 20-30+ year old cars which Im thankful for. Hell, I still have the stock exhaust on my 93 525i , and it is still solid & able to be undone if needed.
👍The colour is Riviera Blue.
What a sound :) Exhaust bypass valves are great but I've had some fun with them seizing when not used much, have you that happen on any of yours?
Thanks. I've had it on aftermarket stuff. I went through 3 QTP valves on the V10 M3. The OEM stuff doesn't generally have issues, particularly when it's automated so it actuates regularly.
And the other best thing apart from the exhaust sound, it's got 3 pedals and a 🕹️! 🤘
🤘
And tonight Mathew 😂😂
I had a GT3 fitted with a similar airbox & induction system, it lost over 20hp when tested back to back (Wayne Schofiled RR) with standard airbox containing a KN panel filter. Also had 4 different aftermarket exhaust systems fitted (SS & TI) off the shelf and custom made. All but one system again lost power over the OE exhaust fitted. I accept the weight loss gains though. All five of my GT3 over a fifteen year period were the Mezger versions, just sharing my experience.
Interesting! Were the exhausts using manifolds? Seat of the pants the car feels quicker with the exhaust. When it was on the 991 GT3 the difference felt more substantial. The K&N kit didn't seem to make much difference other than sound. (It's claimed to give about 12hp I think)
Yes mixture of OE & equal length after market headers. The one that made an improvement was the Parr RSR long equal length primaries (non cat) single back box system, only downside is it blows 108db.
Does Finnegan know you’re wearing his merch? I’d love to see him in a DW hat on one of his shows
I doubt it. He probably hates drifting 🤓
ima send him a box, let’s find out
@@driftworks I reckon he’ll like doing skids.whether you’d call it drifting is open to interpretation
Phil, have you heard of Dundon Motorsports, they make some pretty awesome and highly engineered stuff for Porsche GT cars
I have, they are some of the super noisy ones I was referring to in the vid 👍
That sultry dub music playing while 2 men messing about with the back end of a Porsche, that had to be the highlight of this video🤣
😄🤘
Should have done plugs and coils while the bumper and exhaust was off as they are so easy then.
Nice!!
Thanks!
Wow. Sport mode makes it sound like a cup car.
🤘
ooooooooo I see the impala has moved onto the ramp, does this mean work is being done and we see a video at all?
It means work has been done & I've driven it a bit, but no video unfortunately.
Have you opened up the bumper rear side vents? They are blocked by Porsche for road use but work when open?
Presumably they fill with garbage though, not got if the car isn't being stripped and rebuilt every day.
I haven't.
I want a Porsche now
🤘
the 64 impala in the background looks immaculate
It's not, it's an awesome 10 footer though 👍
@@driftworks looks alot like a 64. its a beautiful car
Listening in the first 6 mins i had to pause the video and shit my pants as i thought i heard my BMW alarm go off, then i realized it was just the sound of Birmingham
Great vids.
Thanks 👍
How about a Lambo style one piece exhaust outlet?? Nice to see that Porsche installed some fireproof insulation around the exhaust so that the car does not do a Ferrari style burn to the ground scenario......
It would probably look a bit weird as the shape of the bumper is very different.
@@driftworks I am sure with your skills you could make one that looked right
