Having a big thick concrete wall at the end of the runway is crazy! There should be more distance to allow the plane to come to a stop. Looking a Google maps one can see that there is ample distance beyond the end of the airport property.
It is heartbreaking. My deepest sympathies go out to the family who had lost their loved ones. May you find comfort and peace during this difficult time.
This plane is very strange. When I first watched the video, I thought the plane was accelerating on the runway for takeoff. But this plane did not seem to slow down on the runway. Either the pilot did not slow down or the engine had a problem.
No reverse thrust is understandable if they indeed lost 1 engine, but gear up, no flaps and overshooting the beginning of the runway are hard to understand
They should check the approving authority for corruption. The airport design would not have been approved anywhere in the developed world. A runway should always end with an open field or the sea.
@bachhongtran Major airports on islands literally have runways that end with a small grass field then the sea. Thats better than a freakin concrete wall.
The plane landed in the wrong direction out of desperation. The wall is at the start of the runway, not the end. The area is known for attracting huge numbers of migratory birds. Nonetheless, it's a bastion of support for the political party that was in power when it was approved (in a small town of 90 000 people, with the fastest-shrinking population in Korea, and desperate for 'economic development'). That's where the corruption will lie (and when disasters happen in Korea, there's almost always massive corruption involved)
Imagine if your plane landed on a cliffside runway and there is no wall or fence if you’re going too fast to slow down? Would you not plummet down to the abyss carrying 180+ passengers and/or crew with you?
Well, I guess you've looked into why? There was an apparent bird strike, or a mechanical failure, the landing gear failed to open, hence, the brakes were unavailable to stop at that time, due to the wheels being still inside the belly.

I wonder if it's a combination of emergency and bad pilots. They have a history of not being able to fly the aircraft when they have to do something other than standard autopilot flying.
Bird strikes. More than one bird hit both of the engines' blades that make emergency landing couldn't be deployed. However, I do agree with people's concern about the location of the airport. The concrete wall is there because it's near a populated area.
SINGLE BIRD STRIKE IN A SINGLE ENGINE WOULD NOT CAUSE HYDRAULIC PROBLEMS. ALSO, THE MYSTERY AS TO WHY IN THE BELLY LANDING WITH NO FLAPS AS WELL AS REVERSER OPEN?!?!?!! We spent 2 weeks in Seoul and flying back to Canada tomorrow. This tragedy hit us very hard. We are grieving right now and the whole country is mourning. 😔🙏
South Korean airports have concrete antenna arrays right at the end of the runway. They are for airplane navigating systems to see the runway. In the US they are break away and the planes can run right over them. They need to adopt this also and not have a freaking wall at the end. SMH
This is the first time I’ve seen an Asian country airport that have a wall like that I’ve never seen any of those in other Asian countries or maybe I’m blind
About today's accident in South Korea: How does someone build a wall at the same level as the runway at the end of it? It should have EMAS. Engineered Material Arresting System (EMAS) technology consists of installing concrete blocks that deform and slow down the plane if, in an emergency situation, the aircraft leaves the runway limits. Congonhas is the first airport in Latin America to have this technology, which is common in the United States, Europe and Asia. "EMAS is composed of a porous material mixed with a type of concrete, which deforms when the aircraft moves over it, slowing down the aircraft that may not be able to land within the normal limits of the runway."
Why do you guys keep talking about the damn wall, it's more than what you see at face value, for all we know that wall saved lives, pilots may have pulled a pakistani airlines.
@@shinji1264 Considering every single passenger was killed with the exception of 2, I highly doubt the wall did anything but harm. This situation was not going to unfold like the PIA disaster flight as they were committed to that belly landing from the start but were unable to use wing spoilers or other means to slow down in time to avoid impact
The design of that antenna wall borders on negligence, the impact with the wall killed those passengers. The soft concrete blocks would work if the gear was extended, not so much with the gear up. Were the pilots working together? Most Korean pilots are ex- military, did Korean culture influence decision making? The investigation will be embarrassing for Korean government officials. A breakaway lattice antenna frame would have allowed the plane to decelerate over distance.
Why couldn't the engines be in reversed motion to reduce the forward motion toward the concrete wall? And the wing's flaps were not raised to reduce speed! There are commercial airplanes that actually reverse the engine just a bit when they land
Some news were reporting that both engines were down due to birds strike, this would explain why the plane didn't decelerate enough and why the landing gears were not deployed in the attempt to offer major surface in the contact with the runaway ground and tentatively reducing the speed by friction. This would also explain why the plane didn't devert the landing to another airport since it couldn't fly without engines. Unfortunately that wall destroyed any attempt and hope. I believe there could better solutions to contain the speed and getting rid of all the concrete walls at the end of the landing runaway.
This makes no sense. You have no idea what you're talking about. It would be better to lower the landing gear as the brakes provide 80% of stopping force. Don't spew nonsense.
Some sort of sand trap long before the wall is what i thought they would have been in place, not straight into a wall ?! And if there wasn't enough space for it then there shouldn't have been a run way .

Many factors here, like if there was enough fuel and water surface to consider other options. But that was smooth landing shows the pilot was trying his best. But beside some hydrolic failure, the wall is unnecessary structure within 2 km at the end of the runway.
Hypothetical: if a plane's gear failed and slide landing on water nearby coastal area instead of frictioning on concrete runway, then what happened? Muan city, SK is the coastal town. My deep sadness, heartache, and condolences to all families of victims
Depends on the ocean weather at the time of landing. There is an extra of landing on watter: injured people can't swim to safety and a plane has a very narrow time-frame between crash landing and sinking. But the issue here is the reinforce concrete wall. We'll though modern airport have none of these exactly for emergencies.
That ILS structure shouldn’t have been made out of reinforced concrete. They are supposed to be designed to crumble on impact. This is a perfectly survivable crash. That structure was built like a bunker. Ridiculous. That’s why the front of the plane disintegrated on impact. Truly sad.

Pilot was landing smoothly and then like he forgot about the pointless and senseless wall they had in that runaway..Pilot anounced emergency..Do they told him about the killer wall??
DW, you need a 737 pilot to explain whether lack of engine power affects hydraulic pressure for both landing gear and speed breaks, aviation experts just won't do...
737 landing gear hydraulics are powered by engines, but can also be extended manually by a control unit within the cockpit which doesn’t require hydraulics.
It don't. These planes have 3 independent hydraulic systems operating slightly different parts of the airplane. From the video it seems like no flaps and no slats were deployed. That would require a near total failure of all 3 systems. Very unlikely. Something else is going on.
It depends. The best to ask would be either a pilot or a mechanic that works on those. I am a mechanic, I work on different aircraft but i know the 737 a little bit but it does have 3 separate hydraulic systems: A, B, and Standby. The fact that the gear was not down seems to me like crew overload in a stressful situation because you should be able to extend it manually even if all the hydraulic systems fail
Last time I was on an airplane, I had to seat with my daughter in the tail section with 2 crew members behind us, by that time we were a little angry because of the seats...now I will continue flying there for sure!

It was either a maintenance issue or gross human incompetence that caused this crash. There is no way a single bird strike can cripple an aircraft like this.
The pilots panicked and forgot to deploy the landing gear on the second landing attempt. They may or may not have had hydraulic power for the flaps and the thrust reverses. But they could’ve at least had landing gear and the ability to steer away from that berm and hit the brakes. It’s possible no one would’ve been killed. Have they just deployed the landing gear

So many questions how a bird strike could lead to tragedy? Why no flaps Why no gear Why a wall and no EMAS or overrun Why the hurry to land Hopefully the flight recorders shed some some light. I don't want to judge the pilots before I see the facts!
In case a plane doesn't stop in time and goes off the end of the runway. When that happens there's a real risk of the people in the plane surviving. The wall is there to prevent that.
A possibility is that a very tired crew failed to complete the final checklist and was trying to go around when they heard the scraping . The elevator appears to be up and the nose of the aircraft is up when it should not be. It looks like they either landed long or were adding power to try to go around. The nose needs to be raised 12 to 15 degrees for initial climb and with no main gear they would not be able to achieve that angle because the tail would be dragging on the runway, which it appears to be doing.

There should be a buffered run-off area at the end of the runway, not a concrete barrier.
There was. The concrete wall was far off the front of a runway. The plane aborted initial landing did a quick emerency turn and tried to land on a different runway going to opposite way. The plane should have just abandoned the runway and landed on the longest landing path.
It was a dirt berm with concrete on top where the airport localizer antenna was mounted. Question need to be ask about why that was done. They could have survived if that berm was not there. Usually, if you need to have the localizer antenna up higher. You have it up on extension but can break away and not a hard structure like that berm.
@@trex1448 they abandoned the longest main 2800m runway but landed on the spare 2500m runway,

It shows grieving that what happened was a huge event, but also very final. No thinking maybe somehow they live still. This barrage of headlines helps to process the reality and finality.
He can't slow it down as no control with no wheels down. Wonder why the flaps weren't opened to slow it down. There are MANY questions.
I also thought it was a take off not a landing because of the high speed past half the runaway.
I wonder if the engines were already on full reverse trust 😮
No reverse thrust is understandable if they indeed lost 1 engine, but gear up, no flaps and overshooting the beginning of the runway are hard to understand
I wouldn’t be surprised if the pilots panicked after the bird strike having in mind what happened in Kazakhstan
They should check the approving authority for corruption. The airport design would not have been approved anywhere in the developed world. A runway should always end with an open field or the sea.
I agree with open field but not with the sea. But, i don't think Korea can afford it.

The speed of the landing was very high. Looked liked the plane was going to take off.
Well, I guess you've looked into why? There was an apparent bird strike, or a mechanical failure, the landing gear failed to open, hence, the brakes were unavailable to stop at that time, due to the wheels being still inside the belly.

Another thing I learned is to check the runway for a concrete wall.

agree to you, this is so fishy
Bird strikes. More than one bird hit both of the engines' blades that make emergency landing couldn't be deployed. However, I do agree with people's concern about the location of the airport. The concrete wall is there because it's near a populated area.
one commentator is saying reverse thrust was operating, just not the landing gear or flaps.

South Korean airports have concrete antenna arrays right at the end of the runway. They are for airplane navigating systems to see the runway. In the US they are break away and the planes can run right over them. They need to adopt this also and not have a freaking wall at the end. SMH
This is the first time I’ve seen an Asian country airport that have a wall like that
I’ve never seen any of those in other Asian countries or maybe I’m blind
thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families during this national week of mourning
Absolutely 💯
Because if they didn’t the plane would have gone into populated areas and exploded there
Why couldn't the engines be in reversed motion to reduce the forward motion toward the concrete wall? And the wing's flaps were not raised to reduce speed! There are commercial airplanes that actually reverse the engine just a bit when they land
Everything was malfunction not working.
@@Passions Incorrect. Excessive heat generated by heavy braking at high speed will result in brake failure on large aircraft.

Many factors here, like if there was enough fuel and water surface to consider other options. But that was smooth landing shows the pilot was trying his best. But beside some hydrolic failure, the wall is unnecessary structure within 2 km at the end of the runway.
God bless the families of this tragic, horrible accident! 🙏
Hypothetical: if a plane's gear failed and slide landing on water nearby coastal area instead of frictioning on concrete runway, then what happened? Muan city, SK is the coastal town.

Truly sad.
They should used simply a fence with designated brake points, that the plane can travel thru the fence instead to explode.
That's madness.
@ exactly. Thats why you usually see these structures and they appear fragile. Thats by design. They should not be made out of solid concrete.
It was a dirt berm with concrete on top where the airport localizer antenna was mounted. Question need to be ask about why that was done. They could have survived if that berm was not there. Usually, if you need to have the localizer antenna up higher. You have it up on extensions but can break away and not a hard structure like that berm.
@@PatrickLipsinic I’m not 100% certain on all the materials used in the construction. But I saw chunks of concrete that looked to be at least 16-20” (by surrounding scale) thick in the videos. Whatever the case. It shouldn’t be a structure built out of solid materials or earth. It just seems like a fairly survivable crash otherwise.
@@Wargasm54 Yes, there was a flat layer of concrete was on top the berm. That is what the localizer antenna was mounted to. You can see the berm on Google street view.
They will have to remove that concrete wall and configure that airport in a differentt way

Things I didn't know:

DW needs experts to tell them how to eat cereals.
WHY WAS THERE A CONCRETE WALL???

Does this mean the last rows of the airplane are the safest seats of all?
Why the heck is the wall standing in the middle of the runway? Of course, it’s impossible to avoid it in an emergency, which is why it was hit immediately.
I heard they put walls near airports as sound barriers or to prevent people from getting to close to runways. but I could be wrong.

It was either a maintenance issue or gross human incompetence that caused this crash. There is no way a single bird strike can cripple an aircraft like this.

@@Cameronnp ILS Localizer should be level or below runway elevation.
