The Red Arrows are the Royal Air Force's aerobatic display team - the best in the world. They fly Hawk T1 jets, powering through the sky at hundreds of miles per hour, pulling high-G maneuvers with just a few metres between their wingtips. Here's how they do it: and part of it's a skill that you probably already know.

It is surprising how transparent a cloud can be when you're up close to another aircraft inside it. During my initial formation training I was flying along concentrating on the other aircraft when I became aware out of my peripheral vision I couldn't see the ground or sky any more. I quickly diverted my gaze and found we were inside a cloud!
They used to shepherd aircraft through clouds by flying them in formation as well.

More like "feat. РКА" :) Since at the moment, the only way you can get to ISS is in Soyuz capsule.
It would be interesting, rendezvous and docking are surprising complex and nonintuitive (The best way to catch up with something is to slower down, which puts you in a lower orbit so you're moving faster then what your trying to catch up with). The fact that USSR/Russia has been doing it as an automated system since the 60s is really impressive.

If they did the wrong thing after you told them to go right then telling them to go right again isn't going to solve that however saying your other right immediately tells the person that something is wrong with what they just did.

This was going to be Monday's video, but it's going up early because... well, I wasn't waiting any longer to show this off to the world! You know what's great about your videos? It's that while most of UA-camrs would have used such an opportunity - flying with the Red Arrows - to show off and come up with awesome images but no content, you actually find a way to teach us something in less than 4 minutes while remaining humble as usual and delivering genuine excitement on top of that. Your channel is a gem in the darkness of the world wide web. Thank you very much for your work.

When you just can't decide which system to use
Nuppusaurus in the UK we use metres for most distance measures but miles per hour are used for speed. It is a by product of the partial conversion to the metric system we have.

Hobgoblin UK it's like when people use feet for height and stone for weight, instead of metres of KG and acres instead of hectares for area. Even in an industrial environment you'll still find inch pattern pipes as opposed to mm, except where it's super techy
fdsdh1 yeah. It's actually really messed up. I was born in 72. Just after we supposedly went metric. I was tought metric at school all the influential adults in my life used imperial. I use feet and inches to quantify my height or the hight of a bridge. I will tell that shop you want is 100 yards away. But I measure smaller things in mm or a room in metres.
I buy fuel in litres but calculate my cars economy in miles per gallon.
This is all normal to me but it's messed up when I think about it.
He's British - a lot of British people can, and do, use both systems.
If I'm measuring timber etc, I use millimetres, but if asked my height, I say 6'.
Buy milk in litres, and buy beer in pints.

I grew up in Lincolnshire not far from RAF Scampton and was lucky enough to see them practising on a regular basis. Incredible to watch.
I'm lucky enough to see these guys ALL the time above Lincolnshire. I get many free shows through the year. Fantastic stuff.
I had the pleasure of seeing them at the last Luchtmachtdagen in the Netherlands in 2016. Seeing it live is truly amazing. While I really enjoyed the other displays such as the Italian Frecce Tricolori, the Red Arrows were definitely the best I saw that day.

Hey I saw this display over Lincoln, it was only last week I'm sure, sure is great to live next to so many RAF bases, the rumble of the hawks is always a welcome sound!

The aircraft they fly is very astheticly pleasing. Elegant lines and it is easy to see its influence on the Harrier.

If you want to talk about visual lineage, then the Hawker-Siddeley Hawk T1 is the spiritual descendant of the Hawker Hunter, though they have no parts in common. The Hunter display team was The Black Arrows, and the Red Pelicans flew Jet Provosts. When RAF display flying was rationalised into a single team the name they chose was The Red Arrows, flying the Folland Gnat until about 1980. The Gnat was a tiny but very capable jet aircraft and I saw the Red Arrows fly them a number of times in my youth. The Red Arrows (or indeed any good display team) are an example to us all that practice makes perfect. We can all learn from that at times I'm sure.

Saw the Red Arrows at the F1 British Grand Prix last year. Really is a joy to behold!
Haven't seen them in years, was suppose to see them at RIAT this year but was postponed due to Covid and will (hopefully) be next year now. Last time I saw them, they flew with the Vulcan on her last flight. Definetly agree, best air display team in the world.

The strange sing-song cadence their leader users to pass instructions for staying in formation sound weirdly like the original voices for the Cybermen in The Tenth Planet.
I'm thinking of old fashioned railroad conductor cadence. I think noisy environments encourage the development of interesting tone and rhythm overlays on English because the fine sound details all get drowned out. You have to replace/augment in order to get meaning across. The thing I noticed that was really interesting to me was that his voice got notably higher for flight communication. I guess to be in a different frequency range from background noise?

They’re almost certainly not going supersonic. If they were, windows would be shattering.
The only time fighter jets will go supersonic over mainland is when they are reacting to a threat. Most of those will be from lossimouth Scotland, reacting to Russian planes. So I don't think you are being bothered from too many sonic booms like you suggest. Maybe once in a blue moon they may be scrambled to an unresponsive aircraft, but that's rare.

I did recently see the Blue Angels, and they said that they have a cubit between canopy and wing.
I love the 7 months of training before they fly anywhere near the public part because I live in Lincoln and you see them over the city centre every day
I love seeing the same people spouting the same points to each other in different comment threads trying to prove that their countries Aerobatic Team is better. Obviously, YOUR countries team is better because they are from YOUR country, JUST LIKE TOM SAID IN THE VIDEO!

I'm 🇨🇦 and even ex military but the Blue Angels and Thunderbirds win me over with their speed and sound even though the Arrows and Snowbirds fly more planes

Watched this whole thing with a massive grin on my face. This is so freaking cool
There are several aerobatic teams that fly tighter or riskier formations - but they also usually have a lot more technical support like the boardcomputer keeping the right position in formation, also the planes are often heavily customised for that job with barely any of their original functionality (aside form flight) being left.
But i kinda like the russia and italian airshows more.
Specially russian fighterjets: just take of the weapons, give them some vodka and let hell break loose - Sukhois look awesome and seem to also fly awesome.
I wouldn't have thought any formation display team would have any sort of automatic computer controlled autopilot keeping formation. It'll all be manually flown, all down to the pilot.

Tom, I was wondering if the following pilots use less fuel then the leader. Same reason birds fly in similar formations to conserve energy.
They tend to use more since they have to play with the throttle a lot to maintain position
Typically slightly more.
Broadly speaking the amount of fuel used is the same by all the aircraft in the display. Reds 6,7,8&9 May use more due to their more dynamic second half of the full display.

That pilot's voice or whatever would be really cool for a voice actor gimmick in a game with a pilot unit or character. Imagine the Wraith from Starcraft saying "coming right... now" or "Hold-ing the bank... now" in his smooth voice whenever you clicked on him.

Flying close aerobatic formation is HARD and HAZARDOUS. I was a USAF pilot and flying fingertip formation through 90 degrees of bank while a few feet away from your equally incompetent classmate was pure terror. Glad I survived. Formation flying's difficulty has an inverse square function with distance. 20' is immensely easier than 3'.

i've seen him comment mostly if it's a question about the topic or someone has extra information or if someone knows something is wrong in the video and can give a proper source/info to fix the error.

What are the "lines" on the cockpit glass for?
They're explosive charges, designed to go off in the event of an ejection so it gets the canopy out of the way.
They help crack the glass when ejection seat punches through. Evidently it is quicker to eject this way.
It’s the MDC: miniature detonating cord. Destroys the canopy glass to allow the seat to pass through it on initiation of the ejection sequence.

The Hawk is such a neat little plane
Numerous countries/militaries use two-seaters as trainers (including the USN/USMC, for carrier-qualification to replace TA-4 Skyhawks and T-2 Buckeyes).
Other countries use the single-seat Hawk 200 as a light attack aircraft.
Bet that was scary!

36hunters I’m used to hearing the crisp “reh-dee hit it” style the blue angels use. The British team sounds like it should- “okay mates let’s make an easy turn there it is after this let’s have a pint at the pub chip chip god save the Queen cherio”

I'm Canadian so my instinct is to agree with you but the truth is probably that there are a bunch of top-tier aerobatics teams around the world. Still, GO SNOWBIRDS!
You're absolutely correct, there are many fantastic teams. My comment was (partly) tongue in cheek, and admittedly biased. That said, I still pit the Snowbirds among the best in the world. I love the style and creativity that gets put into the Snowbird shows.
The Canadian Snowbirds are probably amazing to watch, can't be sure of course because I and most of the world have never heard of them, The red arrows on the other hand...
Toms Tech - I'm not an enthusiast of the sport so I hope I can be forgiven but I hadn't heard of the Red Arrows until this very video. I had heard of the Snowbirds and the US Blue Angels, though.
I'm British and was brought up on the Red Arrows, originally in Folland Gnats. But after them I really like the Frecce Tricolori.
Nothing is better then watching them come over the tyne bridge while the great north run is on!
