9 2 is a terrible hand, hes right.
92 versus the whole open range of opponent is pretty ahead, so you want to get in there...
I would fold 92 everyday preflop, but if you call, you have to get it in if you hit 9-7-2 or it doesnt make any sense to call.
you don't need to bluff with this part of this calling range, it's either get it in or fold ( which will be very often , that's why I would fold pre ).

Hello Daniel. First of all, credits for the awesome videos lately.
Was thinking if maybe you could explain more about all the terms of poker, such as pot odds, implied odds, or whatever they're called, and how to use them properly, maybe in a later video. All of this is obviously obtainable information on google, but I'd love to hear your explaination on it :)
What I think I am beginning to understand is that calculating pot odds vs equity of any given hand is especially useful when you are trying to decide to move forward or not . I tried starting to write an example, but not sure my understanding of things warrants it.
I've been trying this advice and it seems to be working. Thank you!

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm really just trying to expand my processing of advanced betting mechanics. But regarding that hypothetical 92 off & 982 rainbow flop, I believe it's solid to raise. Most will assume you're still strong at this point but not two-paired, sending out a C-bet. This would not only work in your favor on a perception level but it adds value to your hand. If you bet quarter pot or half pot you're applying pressure to opponents floating high cards and forcing mid pairs to commit or fold. Based on opponent response to this bet, you get decent info regarding who's likely holding what combos. Assuming most folded pre flop and you're playing 3-handed or less, you could assume you're up against premium pairs or high cards floating to the river if they call. If they come over the top they might be too strong to continue or bluffing, depends on how tight of a player they are. From this point forward, assuming nobody reraises, I'd say to play for pot control and not be afraid to take your hand to showdown so long as you don't over-commit financially and nobody has given you reason to believe they're sitting on a monster hand come the turn or river.
More often than not, your two pair will be the best made hand at the table. So long as you stay vigilant and account for all variables important at the time, I'd say you shouldn't fold the two pair immediately post flop. And honestly I don't think Daniel would either, but I also don't think he's trying to advise people to play exactly like he does because of his excellent reading ability.

I think it kind of depends on a lot of things, how many people are in the hand, what position you are in. But in general, yes, I don't believe there's a problem with betting your two pair on the flop. I do this all the time. Sometimes it forces everyone out and I win the pot, or I'll get someone to smooth call with their high pocket pair. If a player re-raises on top of my bet, and does so fairly aggressively, it's time to assess if it's possible that they either raised or just called with pocket 2s, 8s, or 9s, or if they have 98. If he checks to me, on the turn, the slow play is over and I'm betting enough to substantially hurt him if he calls and is wrong about me. If I'm already hurting on chips, I'd probably just push at this point and live with the results. If he stays really aggressive on the turn, and is first to act, I'm somewhat inclined to fold, depending on what I know of the player already. Also kind of depends if I'm playing online or in real life. Lol.
I have been analyzing ONLY roulette for 8 years now ... I don't know ANYTHING about poker ... so it's very nice to see that everybody has his or her own speciality ... yours is poker , ty for sharing your knowledge and experience

Hi Daniel, big fan here. Can you do a video on button abuse please? A lot of new players (including me) struggle with understanding the advantage of having the button.
Just wanted to let you know...applied your lesson. Got on a hot streak after HOURS...literally after 18 hours of being almost completely card dead in an aggressive 1/3 game.... Back to back Big Blind and Small Blind hands flopped Full Houses. BB was 9/2 Suited spades against AA....flopped 9/2/2 and SB 4/5 Suited Spades against KK...flopped 5/5/4. Nice raises...four callers each...and called ALL-IN...about $500 in profit. DEFINITELY would have folded before! Thank you Sir!

Most of what Daniel said is true. I’ll also take into consideration if I’m playing in a short stack, middle stack or deep stack tournament.

I think I always misunderstood this (ok really I've only been studying poker seriously like the last couple months) but I was always under the impression you play a very small range in the blinds and took that to mean you rarely bet and usually fold, and only play with a small range of hands. Looks like the opposite is true and you are just really careful moving forward. So your first move is to usually check or bet because of the odds?
you usually check to the pre-flop raiser since they started the aggression by raising in the first place. Then you react to what they do based on your hand.

@Daniel Negreanu : Great vid as usual 👍. But (yes, there is a "but"), you only talk about the big blind and the title of the video is Defending your Blinds, plural. What about the small blind ? You get half of the odds you get in the big blind, so it is not as much as correct to call, especially when you do not know what the big blind is going to do. What are your thoughts on this, please ? 🤔
Huge admirer of your skills and cool! But I read some old pro saying that you should never educate your opponents and point out their faulty play.. Because of, well, obvious reasons. How would you respond to such a statement?
I was reading a book that had such a different view on defending blinds. It said that people become too attached to blinds that they didn't even put in the pot voluntarily and that they should let the go more easily than people tend to to. I think that, although math IS on your side (5:1 e.g.), it's not 5:1 anymore if you look at the situation that you already did put 1 bb, so it becomes 3:1 again. My English is so bad in trying to explain this haha.
I think Dan was talking about the context of a tournament pot with antes as well as smaller, almost min raises which have become popular in tournaments.
If you're playing micro stakes most people still go 3x or 3.5x and you need to fold a lot more.
Hey Daniel great video man! I was just wondering who you think are the "best" poker players. Cash game players? Tournament Players? And to get a little more specific do you think HU players are better than the average Cash game or Tournament player? I know they are all better at each game depending what they play, but which group would you categorize as the all around best? I doubt you'll see this, but if you do thanks in advance.

So im wondering, ive seen many players defending their big blinds. I personally don’t understand why you would risk losing chips to safe a blind? You can steal that blind almost any time. I understand that a minimum raise is not much. But it still is more than 1 blind. Doing this 100 times and you can do the math. Its alot of money lost on a defence.
I personally see blinds as a sacrifice as i don’t voluntarily put them in the pot.
Is my way of handling blinds a bad thing? I mean i would call with KQ or 89.
I would also raise with 82 for that matter or do a 3-bet with 67. As i think betting is the best defence against someone. I ask myself would he or she call this bet or that bet? If that person got nothing, or multiple players they would not call. They might start fishing until the river. And betting more against a player that is pot commited is also a stack dump if that person caught his fish on the Mississippi. If not, its great.
I never want to see a showdown not even if i have a royal flush.
Daniel can you make a video on your thoughts on limit Texas Holdem maybe some tips because my casino only hosts open limit Holdem tables when they aren't doing tournaments and I haven't found the time to join a tournament yet.
I probably could get it in with 9 2 (nines up), but it depends on a lot of factors.
What Ive learned is that I take far more bad beats, suk outs, etc... when I shove on the flop. The more information I have when I shove allows me to minimize the bad effects that poor luck can have... or whether to shove at all. I really think that shoving on the turn or river is a far better plan than shoving 2 pair on the flop...if you have a choice.

But in comparison with some of the tips I've heard, calling isn't an option when you're big blind, I thought blinds/late position must be aggressive, means they must either raise or fold, "calling isn't an option" specially with unconnected off-suited hands. Don't know... kinda confused. I'm a beginner tho :) please guide. Thanks.

Daniel, you say people should call with everything basically because of the pot odds but its better to fold against really good opponents, isnt it just better to call PF if you getting really good odds against pro opponents and play more conservative after the flopp?

Mr Daniel i would like to know if i can call my self a semi professional i play in Sydney N.S.W. Australia in hotel's and RSL Clubs (pubs and working men club) i play about 8 game's a week at a buy-in of between $25 to $55 per-game with prize pools of between $1000 to $3000 i have been playing pub poker (which is at most pubs ) for 5 year's in Australia but 5 card stud is my favorite game and been playing that for 40 from the age of 9 ( with 5 card drew and 7 card stud as my dad tutored me ( he was a 3 card brag and 9 card brag and cribbage champ in Kent in UK ) i can say studying ur play not watching or read ur tutorials and i have have in the last 11 month won twice a month placed 2nd and 3rd once a week either one or the other and placed in the money places between 4th to 7th positions three time's a week and no money positions 15th place or less, so not playing large tournament at the Sydney or Melbourne casinos or cash game's there either can i call my self sem-professional i have fixed income of $550 a week and now in the last 11 month i am now making $669 a week profit after i take out buy-in and losses so to cut a long story short THANK YOU AND I APPRECIATE UR PLAY AS A PROFESSIONAL WORLD CHAMPION ( if u find ur-self in Sydney Australia and not in a big casino game it would be an honour to play against you and show you how hard Australian pub poker is )

I love him, but essentially his tip is: defend your bb only if you have something... because if you play 92 and then you fold everything lower than a tris, it doesn’t make sense to pay the raise at all... or am I missing something?
It's "see more flops" basically. His example of a 9-2 offsuit is something you would rarely take to a flop and never fight a preflop raise with, but the math is different when you've already got 1/3 or 2/3 of the raise in the pot. Shooting for trips or a straight draw on the flop is ok when you're paying less than a min raise to take the risk.
I love your videos and think you are a master at playing poker, but I dont get this one. If I am in the BB with a 9-2 on a 800-400 and some guy bets into me for 1600, yes the pot is huge but I'm getting TF out every single time and saving my two big blinds for a better hand later down the road. Just my two cents but they are called "rags" for a reason and the percentages are just not there.
Hey Daniel, I was just wondering how to beat players online. I'm not playing on a really professional app (don't worry, its all legal), and the players aren't really that great. They will call with almost any hand, including 2 and 7 off suit. So I call with a decent hand like King Jack or Ace King, and they get lucky and flop 2 pair. Any tips? Thanks

I'm not the one to overrule him and I willingly admit cluelessness, but what he says makes no sense to me. If you have 4-5 to 1 pot odds and 14% chance to win, you're still down right? Pro's don't defend their blinds with 10 6 off, and especially not if they know the opponent has a monster, not that I've seen anyway. You're not gonna flop a better hand than pocket aces more often than once every 6 tries with 10 6 off, right? You'll be giving your money away for sure with an uncertain chance to win them back at a slower pace is what it seems like to me. Like I said, I could be wrong. Someone kindly explain. EDIT: I guess the point is that the opponent doesn't have AA most of the time, so then the math gets a lot trickier.

The odds haven't changed right? The reward:risk ratio is 5:1, not actually the odds. Just want to make sure I understand. Risking one to gain 5 makes sense, but not 5 in 1 odds.
