I can understand the relaxing after being tilted, but when you have a full house 7s full of jacks and you go all in and then the guy next to you gets a straight flush on the last cards cos he has 9 10 of diamonds and the last card is an 8 of diamonds. It's difficult to not be tilted off the earth

What about that time I had couple aces I was thinking of raising pre flop, suddenly the guy before me goes all in and I smile and call....he had pair of 6, I smile harder.....only to see the 6 showing in the flop..

Great advice. Bankroll management should pretty high up on the list as well. Good bankroll management analysis will help you definitively point to why you're losing. Keep track of opponents, session times, rakes, blinds, locations, and obviously how much you win/lose per each parameter.
Daniel, I can't thank you enough for the tips. I learned 7-card stud at the ripe young age of 6 and since January, my skill has improved tremendously. I went from playing for fun fishy style, to a poker monster. I recently lost my job, struggling to take care of 2 kids and this game along with your tips has helped me keep my head above water. Pros like you are great assets and ambassadors for the game of Poker and always thankful for your genuine remarks and personalities.
I remember a tilt from years ago. A new guy joined the table (online) and kept over betting every hand, mostly bluffing. When he was called on his bluffs, he was getting lucky and hitting his bad hands (like 2, 6 off suet). I decided I had had enough and started calling all his hands, because I had a deep enough stack to do it for a while. Eventually I knocked him out of the game and made a nice profit to boot.
It is the only time I ever played with the goal of punishing an opponent, no matter what. I was lucky that no one else knocked me out while I was trying to knock him out. I think, for the most part, they sat back and let us duke it out.

Well, in those situations, mark that person as a target fish, but wait until you have the cards, then go aggressive to isolate him. If he's potentially giving money away, make sure that you can get that money, and attack it when you know you have him beat for sure. A few of the other players probably saw it, too, and were waiting to get good cards to take his money. If you try it with bad cards, he'll win.
@@jonnyzuma6884 That's what I was doing at first, but that seemed to be when he'd get a hand slightly better than mine. I haven't done anything like that since.
I remember one night I was getting great hands, but someone always had a better one. Straight, no good, flush, no good, full house, no good, etc. It was an interesting lesson, because the next day I was hyper sensitive and folded a full house. I correctly determined he had a better full house.
I'm from Brazil. I'm 19 years old and I started to play poker, I liked the game and I started to read about it and every time I go into a game I see it was different, I intend to continue this way, each time looking at it differently and perseing I have to evolve more and more, your videos are amazing, you opened my eyes, amen

Getting into it as a beginner now and only have 100 or so hours and I’ve more or less broken even but 5. Being bad luck was what I thought at first and I’ve quickly (through help of your videos) realized I wasn’t playing well at all at first and I’m quickly getting better.
The only thing I consider “bad luck” is the times your in a showdown with someone all in and you are ahead and up to 80+% on the turn and then they get the 1 card they need to beat you on the river.
For me it’s been the river every time that gets me.
I'm slightly profitable. For me, it's the straights that seem to get me almost every time I lose what I am sure is a good hand- probably 3/4 of my lost hands are from that alone. it's like I'm blind to them. I think it's a lot to do with being dyslexic so it's a personal learning curve in a specific situation, though I am noticeably improving at seeing them and I think it'll soon be Muscle Memory, just takes practice to get past something like that- my stats are a lot better than I feel like they should be considering this weakness, once I overcome it I might just be able to fund Beer Money or a Meal or Two most Days unless I can move up in stakes- that'd be nice! Folding more often has also drastically improved my Game. I've probably got around 100 Hours myself right now. I hope you've improved your game since the comment :D

Story of my life. River screws me a lot.
That's the one part of poker that's just absolutely brutal, and there isn't a single god damn thing you can do about it, even if you're one of the best in the world. You can do absolutely everything right and play a perfect game, and still end up going broke in the blink of an eye if whoever you're playing against hits a miracle card on the river to save them. That's why Phil Hellmuth loses his shit so often in those bad beat/suckout situations, and while it's entertaining to watch, I also completely understand where he's coming from. He'll be playing perfectly and following every single best practice strategy, and then someone who he's never heard of before will play horribly and take absolutely insane and nonsensical risks, but still end up knocking him out of the tournament just because they got lucky on the river. I know we all love to laugh at Phil's temper tantrums, but I cannot imagine being in his place during some of those unlucky hands that would leave me tearing my hair out and never wanting to play poker again...
That “presence” advice is brilliant and can serve one in a lot of ways outside of poker.
No joke this video is what got me to start paying closer attention to my thought processes in general. I started realizing that my mind definitely wasn't working correctly and after some therapy sessions, a few appointments with a psych, and diagnosis, I'm now finally living my best life at the age of 33.

WOW, Daniel you are a true hero. I never thought i would see self awareness, presence, affirmation talks in Poker. I live daily to learn about these things, and i'm thinking of making money playing poker part time, i'm glad i watched this so I can be like there are people that care about there state of consciousness at the same time as making money. Another accurate video, Dan! I know what my mistakes are but my mindset isn't there to fix them. All of these problems you mentioned are pretty clear to me. Any goods reads or videos on mindset for learning how to deal with your mistakes? Cuz I embrace and remember them, but in other two days I sense those mistakes coming back to me.

Hey Daniel, what about if the game I'm playing has very big rake? Could that be a reason I am loosing in those games or it has nothing to do with it?
Namaste, Daniel. Your advice on how to deal with tilt is referred to as mindfulness, and is strongly associated with the practice of meditation. The general principle is to take a step backwards from your feelings and observe them, understand that YOU are generating them, and take control.
..but the way you expressed that was probably better than how I did. Good job. And you're my favourite poker player to watch in broadcast games and video for exactly that reason. Even after you've just experienced a bad beat, you look relaxed and cheerful. You may have lost the last hand, you may have even risk being taken out of this particular game in the next couple of hands, but you seem able to remember that overall - lifetime or just the last 6 months - you're WAY ahead. It's very impressive, especially to someone who doesn't have very good control of their emotions.

Hey Daniel, can you do a video on the difference between playing tournaments and cash games? It would be great to get your take.

And how about smaller casino tournaments, the $40 - $100 vs the $1,000 - $10,000 tournies.
One of the main things I've noticed is that players seem to be afraid to take a break; out of fear of missing out on a big hand. While you can't really do it in a tournament, you should take regular breaks in cash games; especially if you're upset and/or steaming and tilted. You're much more likely to be missing out on losers than winners. When you do, don't be afraid to miss blinds! The best time to be away is when you're out of position. Then you can re-post behind the button. It's the best place to be putting in dead money!

Even more, I love it when you beat Hellmuth and laugh while he is walking around in anger mode ... all the time he is pacing around in the mode, you chuckle to the table and wait for the impending mushroom cloud.

Thanks for this video RealKidPoker. No blabla, but very valuable information presented in a straight forward and entertaining way. That's what makes sites like this so worthful. Only missed bankroll management. It's so important in the long run, as you can destroy a winning streak that lasted for months within a few hands.

Most of the time I win because others players tilt, when you play with low money, people want to end fast, when longer is the game, more they try to rush you and make mistakes, its low money, but its easy money, every coin is welcome

I was into playing local cash tournaments at the local bars 10 years ago and I won a couple of times Daniel you were my favorite player back then and I believe you still are now. You have some great advice. Still on the strongest advice you can give is you have to change your style based upon the table and who you’re playing against. Yessir
You are the most interesting and least obnoxious person in poker ... you will always be kid poker no matter how old you are ... in addition I respect the way you loved your father and ofcourse your mother and entire family .. I lost both my elderly parents to cancer within the last 8 years and it is something you will never forget although I know they are literally in a better place .. @@RafaelMunizYTit's not. He's joking. But if you can play in higher stakes, you're better off, because the rake percentage is less. Most states limit the rake to 5 dollars a hand. That's a lot for 1/2, but it's a lot less for 2/5, or higher.

Thank you Daniel. Your wisdom and advice is what is getting me through this rough patch of me beginning my poker career. This video in particular is especially relevant to me as just 2 days ago I played my first live cash game (usually play live tournaments, or online cash/tournament) and I was doing extremely well. I grinded from 2am to 4am and managed to turn $100 to $370. I originally brought $220 to play with but kept the rest in my pocket so I can just add it in to defy the variance but around 5am I suffered a very bad beat that wiped out my profits KK vs AA. Then after that I tried to keep a level head as I was only breaking even. Then, in my efforts to make at least some profit, I ran into flush over flush , top pair against top pair with smaller kicker, and an idiot who called my all in where I had a a pair of kings on the flop and he had a gut shot and somehow hit it on the river. I was insanely mad but tried to keep cool, ended up punching the wall and almost breaking my wrist. I know to a lot 220 loss isnt that big but as a broke college student the 270 profit wouldve increase my bankroll by a substantial percentage
Gotta keep your cool no matter what, in life and i poker. But Poker is a great tool for getting better at that. Laughter is my medecine. My inside comedian usually saves me lol and at the end of the day i love poker, so im happy just to play. win or lose, its part of the game, im blessed to be at the table. As long as i keep my cool im winning regardless.
I hope you're doing well and haven't killed yourself over a poker game. In the off chance you see this, poker isn't a career, the only people who say it is, are people who sell advice. Poker isn't a trade like plumbing or carpentry, it's gambling with malleable odds.

I still remember the day I got satelite TV (very late to the party) and found a poker channel. I had just started playing online and had a ton of fun with it. Daniel Negreanu taught me so much, I won a ticked to WCOOP a couple weeks after. Didn't win much then, but was so proud of myself for even being in the top 300 at the end.
Just got back from the casino... and it's insane and incredible how much variance plays a role in poker.
Running bad for session after session is ridiculous and just isn't fun after a while. Poker just isn't for me,

Poker is freaking hard, you can just make money on it if you are willing to put hours and hours practicing and learning. My personal advice: dont listen to this guy.

5) Missing natural talent (not smart, analytical enough)
4) Not capable of playing your best game enough (lack of focus)
3) Tilt (being influenced by outcome of hands)

1) Rake. The reason why 40% of players don't win probably and many are break-even
If you think a rake of 5% is the main reason you end up a losing player, all I can say is just quit playing, cause you don't really get poker. Being a rake grinder 20 tabling the micros, low and medium limits like a madman and being pissed cause PS decided to put an end to that bs doesn't necessarily mean you get poker.
I don't play poker that much anymore cause I have to admit, it was pretty hard. Highest I got was NL200 zoom. It's just more than 5bb/100 and sometimes even 10bb/100 you're paying to the site which is huge for your winrate. I increases variance too which makes tilt more likely to occur.
It's true that it can go as high as 5bb/100 at the low limits, but what you have to understand is that this is by no means the main reason a certain player is a losing one at the end of the year. From this point of view, with all the mocking Negreanu gets from the "PS grinder pros", he is 100% right, in that the players found a way to "cheat" the system and make a living in an unnatural way. What do I mean by unnatural? Well, in a way that, while definitely not easy, was so much against the spirit of the game that the players ended up canibalizing each other for pennies and waiting the end of the month for the rakeback. Why? Simply because the system was flawed and it allowed thousands of players to be rakeback pros playing 20 tables+, effectively killing the games on a long term basis. A higher rake would indeed make it harder for such players to abuse the system, which in turn would drive a percentage of them away from this style of "playing".
I'm not saying an increased rake is better for the players. In a vacuum, this is certainly false. However, in a closed system that was so easy to almost "cheat" profitably (at least at the lows and micros), it does make a difference, simply by changing the proportion of mass multitablers vs so called casuals. I am sure there would've been other ways to, but the decision of which measures to implement belongs to PS, not the players, and and the end of the day they are here for their financial benefit, not mine, nor yours and especially not for the rakeback grinders. And for their end-of-year total, what it matter is not how many pro wannabes are 20 tabling on their site, but how many new players they are bringing into the ecosystem. And a difference between 4.5% and 5% rake makes absolutely no difference for those players, because they really don't lose because of the rake. Especially since the rake at the micros was actually decreased, not increased, as it was the case from the lows upwards.
So no, rake is absolutely never the main reason you (not you specifically) are a losing player. If the recent increase in rake turns a mass multitabler from a so-called winning player into a losing one, that's a sign he/she cannot rape the system anymore and needs to start playing poker, not clicking buttons.
I ain't even mocking Daniel, I don't really care about that whole discussion. It's not like someone found a cheat in the system man. The system (rake) made it harder to win at poker. Players have to try to make money in some way and by making volume and getting rakeback it was possible to make rake more bearable. Maybe with lower rake or no rake but just cash out fees, this wouldn't happen. Sure I have nothing against PS decision to increase rake, it's their bussiness. I'm just stating that because of the rake like 40% of the players are losing and then another x% breakeven and trying to grind rakeback. 2bb/100 in rake makes a massive difference. Rake increase does make more losing players man. It isn't that complex :p
+Marian If it wasn't for rake, close to 50% of players would be winners. With rake, it's probably around 10%. I don't care if you understand poker, you clearly don't understand rake.

How is a casino suppose to earn money from poker if it doesn't rake?
Mark Smeagel - it provides for a safe place to play. A fee is necessary. But the number don’t lie, the house takes $5/hand, 40 hands/hr, that’s $200 an hour. At low stake, one got to beat the players and the rake, which is $25-30/hr. That’s an income many ppl can’t afford.
No problem, we increase rake at MTTs too. People has too big ROI, and that's wrong.

That's a problem with Hold'em in general - you need to pay tight to be profitable. PLO might be more your speed if you lack the patience for that. Another option is just playing many tables at the same time.
Interesting what you say m8, I found that out for myself too... Indeed we shouldn't play for fun or against boredom! Cuz then you don't play as good, so I set for myself don't play more than 2 hours a day and seperated with hours in between... This way you can fully focus, and also I won't play later at night cuz then I'm feeling too "high"... This can be so important cuz for me it makes the difference (along with some other things) between being a winning or losing player...

Personally I don't mind him in small doses. I just wish he'd take responsibility for when he makes mistakes. I don't know him in real life so I can't comment. It's hard to know what's true and what isn't.

I know ppl who were makin 4 k per mounth 2 years ago who can't even make a living now . And if u wanna do it reach out to players better then u. Let them coach u and give them ÷ of ur earnings for start.
sportsfan6554 yes it's possible but with the amount of work you need to put in, the uncertain future of online poker, the stress etc. it's not worth it for most people. You'd be much better off (in terms of money and happiness) by going to university, starting a business, getting into daytrading or something else if you're not already a reg at midstakes or higher.

Go and buy in at a table,, just watch the hands for 6 to 7 cycles, and youll see a "player" playing every hand, calling blind, calling raises, raising the blinds etc, its probably 95% of hands their making moves,, and watch as the win out about 85% of the time, no matter what hand theyve got either,, theyll move in with dogshit hands like A5 os,, hit two pair against your AK type hands.. negraunu only plays on pokerstars because hes contractually obliged to,, but notice how he only plays against other "big players" 99% of the time. Live tv poker is no better... they have cameras in the table... the big tv players always make these ridiculous calls... its hard to eork out they are getting fed info lol.

Poor bankroll management will not lose you money by itself. It is very likely to cause you to tilt and therefore lose more, but your EV stays the same regardless if you have 100 BI or 10 BI.
Trias00 Yes, poor bankroll management alone can break you! If you are playing well and move up in stakes when the variance is working in your favour it will kill your bank roll. Because when variance is working against you, your bad luck hits you harder then your good luck at the lower stakes.

Poor bankroll management makes me play scared. If I'm in over my head I cannot play like a samurai and laugh in the face of death. If I was playing for my rent money I'd be terrified to play anything but AA on the button.
