The Identity of The Last Black Man in San Francisco

- The Last Black Man in San Francisco, released in 2019, is the passion project of childhood friends Joe Talbot and Jimmie Fails, who grew up together in San Francisco. This film is about a fictionalised version of Jimmie Fails reclaiming his childhood home that his grandfather built in the 1940s. This is done amidst a changing San Francisco, where gentrification has pushed those less fortunate to the fringes of society. This video is an exploration of what I believe to be the films main theme - identity.

For anyone who doesn't know, that opening scene with the people in hazmat suits refers to the fact that the neighborhood of Hunters point/Bayview was a navy base that African Americans were moved to after WWII and is still suffering from toxic materials.
Correct, this guy definitely missed that key point. Look up "Hunter's Point toxic site"
@@crackdaddy9867where is the proof? Any sources ?
Bro who gives an eff 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just move if you can't afford it!!!
The self entitlement of you people 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Who are you people?
This film wrecked me. It was so beautiful. The last scene of Jimmie rowing - reminding me of the Middle Passage, but finding his own freedom - was beyond. I loved Mont's sensitive, odd, artistic character. Overall this whole film had such an original and amazing feeling.
I also appreciate your views of the duality people find themselves in. We are all more than one thing. We as a society want to identify people by stereotypical tropes refusing to see the complexities that make a person, group or community. Great insight.
It can’t be overstated… this movie is GORGEOUS.
This was one of my favorite films of 2019. You had some fantastic analysis of the themes displayed! Keep it up!
3:10 typically slumming
Reminds me of the book everything but the burden
this film was a 10/10 in every aspect for me. loved your analysis of it!
This was one of the best film analysis I’ve ever seen. Please don’t stop making these.
Amazing video essay. You captured precisely what I felt while watching the movie and much more. Great work
That was exceptional, well done! It felt like an honest conversation with someone who lives in San Francisco. Thank you and keep it up!
Thanks for your brilliant commentary on this thought-provoking, gorgeously shot film. The only thing I'll add is that it is also a bittersweet ode to how personal journeys can ultimately send good friends in different directions. I've found myself coming back to it again and again over the years and appreciate it more each time, especially because of insightful analyses like these.
you completely nailed the key themes here, a well considered, informed analysis that was a pleasure to watch!
Thank you.! Well done!. I needed a good explanation of the themes and emotions of this film. You are my new Cliff Notes mate.
How does this not have more views and more comments?! Great analysis and overall enjoyable video to watch. Keep it up
You summed up why I loved this movie back when I watched it in the theater. It's such a beautiful, nuanced, and multilayered drama about this side of life in San Francisco.
Your analyzation is brilliant. I love it and thank you 🙏🏾 so much
what a great analysis! thank you for such a great video!
Por favor, haz estos videos más a menudo. I LOVE IT
The analysis of the blind spot is spot on and a great catch. I didn't catch it myself.
Great analysis Archer. Keep up the great work
Great analysis! Have done a lot of analysis of it in my own time, so it's always nice to gain new perspectives. I definitely did not pick up on Mont getting way into his play, and never thought of the conformity aspect of the film to a grand extent.
You did a wonderful job with your breakdown.
i rarely comment but this is a great video, real insightful analysis you got a new subscriber keep it up man
Beautiful work, friend
You have a new fan. Love this movie!!

You did great for your first video.
this was an amazing video essay, i haven't heard many people touch on a lot of the topics you did for this movie!
5:45 the people are the system
Charles Mills emphasised this
This video is fantastic why do you only have 100 subscribers?????
I would like to say to my friend today I have been to home wich home the location film The Last Black Men San Francisco,I know now and very nice inside and antique home reall ❤❤❤ thank you so much Fendi
Very cool man!
This is a good take
great essay
Still love this film. Saw it when it came out and have watched it multiple times digitally. Still Jonathan Majors best role
Perfect movie, great video, i just personally wouldnt even speak of blindspotting in the same category as Last Black Man
I watched this movie several times and knew it had purpose; meaning but I didn’t get it. I just watched it again (thanks to Tubi) and I kissed a lot but was more in tune this time. Came here to check out different perspectives and man when I tell you, watching the movie and then coming here, makes it even more amazing
I was gonna comment something about Blindspotting till you beat me too it!
9:00 anyone else think back to The Truman Show (1999)
A castaway
15:16 blind spot
The movie is DOPE. I mostly agree with this analysis. I however think another theme is in the movie of letting go of strongholds is in the film. The stronghold of "we built this town [this home]" is a form of victim ideology-stronghold.
This is my favorite performance by Jonathan Majors to date! Such a beautiful film filled with heart and depth. It’s clearly a love letter to the city.
Loved this break down. However, the black guys that hung out on the corner were not in a ‘gang’. There were a simply a group of friends with troubled pasts.
15:14 - what movie is he talking about here? i think he says blind spot, but there is only a tv series like that and a movie from 2008, and i guess a french movie from 2019 that is from the fantasy and drama genre, so im guessin he aint talking about any of them
Hi, it's Blindspotting from 2018, with Daveed Digs
@@ArcherGreen big thx
I guess I can see what some of the movie symbolizes, but I don’t wanna work this hard to understand a movie. Not saying it’s a bad movie, but this one might not be for me…
It was deliberate
However… Just so you know there were a lot of affluent black families and communities in San Francisco, I come from one and the Victorian is still in the family in Fillmore!!!!
I didn’t see any toxic masculinity. Other than that, the author really made an amazing video essay! I just don’t understand where the toxic masculinity lays in the video.
I believe the toxic masculinity comes from the gang of guys being confrontational every day.
@@JayKennedy101just bland empty rhetoric. Blind to Tommy Curry and Hasani Johnson
If you live in district 10, it sure doesn't look like a decline in black people going on
Africans were not even in this state till the WWII years. Why is there a movie about them claiming ownership and dismay over “ their” city? As a Native American just imagine how we feel about the changes in this city and who displaced us. We don’t get any films or corny apologists and virtue signalers making videos on UA-cam like this about us though.
They Came Before Columbus
Go read Journey of a Songhai People
