When Jamie is quietly saying "you can't speak to me like that" I always thought that he was putting into use what her learned in sessions with the team Sports Dr.
Yup! I think that was him trying to be the “responsible adult” which is so sad and unfortunate since that should have been his father. I wanted him to get punched but a son shouldn’t have to do it for him to get the message 💯
This was a deeply healing moment for a lot of guys out there. It's easy to cheer the moment (and we all did) he punches his dad, but the real powerful moment that hug represents hits way harder. Too many boys were raised with the only example of acceptable physical touch between men being violence. The fact that something as simple as a hug almost universally evokes tears is evidence of just how broken we are. I hope we can all do better. The world needs a lot less tough guy shit talking and a lot more support and kindness.
How Phil (Jamie) did not get an Emmy, for this scene in particular, is crazy. The look of childhood fear after he hits his dad, the flinch when Roy approaches him
The way Jamie stands there after, scared that all of his friends are going to turn against him for hitting his dad, then flinches when Roy comes bounding over to him only to completely break down when he realizes he has a support system that love and care for him 😭😭😭
The part that always gets me about this scene is that the camera flashes to the key players with notable fathers. Sam and his exceedingly supportive father. Nate, who's father is overly critical and withholding of love, Ted, who's father killed himself. They all get a different perspective on their relationships with their fathers by experiencing how toxic jamie's father is The hug, comes from roy, Jamies's hero and surrogate father.
Means so much that Roy is the one going for the hug. There is the man you are suppose to look up to (your father) and then there is childhood hero’s as well (Jamie had Roy’s poster as a child). Had to mean so much that one of his idols didn’t fail him
Other don't realize how good that Actor who played Jamie's Dad, Because he certainly want all of us to punch him or some sort on this scene. But the Hug gives you all the emotion in life and need to literally tear up. The best
@@otter011the point of language is to clearly communicate. When we say soccer you all know what we’re talking about (even if it annoys some). When we say football, 90% of people assume it’s our football and don’t get the point. Why wouldn’t we use the word that eliminates miscommunication
To everyone out there who had a shitty dad that never believed in them or supported them (myself included), this scene hits like a ton of bricks. Beautiful.
Jamie's dad is a bit of a cartoon character, but the work the show does to paint Jaime and Roy as three-dimensional people pays off in this exact moment

I loved Lasso from the start (even before seeing clips) this episode just permanently cemented how great it was for me. I cried so much when Roy hugged him. I’m also not a fan of violence but that punch I would turn a blind eye honestly. I see it as self-defence.
I love that he gets retribution against his dad. It’s a pivotal moment when your abusive parent finally realises that they can’t hang there bullsh*t on you anymore. I know that feeling. Does anyone else notice that his dad only gets more aggressive once the other guy is holding him back? ✌🏼❤️
If there's a man who didn't watch this with at least a tear or, more likely, a fuckton of tears...then I envy the relationship you had with your father. I didn't have a father but I competed for the affections of a series of drunken dicks that my mother wanted me to call dad, and this was the epitome, the alpha and omega of every relationship I had with a father figure. But I didn't get the hug...I would have taken all the shit they could serve up to me for a hug...but it wasn't done. Not how we did things back then. Ted fuckin Lasso, who'da thunk it?
@@pamelahofman1785 I have two wonderful daughters, unfortunately their mother died earlier this year, but we carry on, what else can you do? Thank you for your kind words.
I think this emotionally hits a lot of people because most of us have had those moments where we wish someone, anyone, had shown their support to us, as quickly and quietly as Roy did to Jamie here.
The fact his dad revels in the fact his son & his team lost badly is just an a-hole thing to do along with how he got mad Jamie mad a pass instead of taking the score himself in the season 1 finale. What a loser his dad was. He abandoned Jamie & his mom and only showed up when Jamie started playing professionally
I don't get it...I am on my 4th time binge watching this show and this scene has to be one of the most emotional. I am a 36yo male and crying my eyes out every single time

You got to say that man played his part but I couldn't stand Jamie's Dad, he was a disgusting ARSE!!!!!!! I liked how Beard just tossed him out and cried when Roy hugged him!
Yes, probably the most impactful hug I've seen since that one, and with a very similar background. This series handled trauma and people coping with it so well.
@@busylawbee because Jamie had bullied Sam quite a bit and Sam at one point said nobody makes him feel worse about himself than Jamie. Sam getting to see the kind of father Jamie had and then forgiving him and hugging him would have been powerful.
@@WizardofgoszThat’s a terrible idea. A lot of people have shitty dads, myself included, and we don’t walk around treating people like shit because of it. An underlying theme in the show that isn’t as obvious to most viewers, is each character taking accountability and understanding how to process their feelings in healthier ways. It would defeat the purpose of the series to not have Jamie earn Sam’s friendship. He shouldn’t get a pass simply because everyone finally got to see the source of his trauma.
@@MickeyDs14 no one's giving him a pass. He's got a lot of redemption and making up to do. But it still would have been better if Sam gave him the hug. The terrible idea is making all sorts of assumptions about what I think about Jamie.
I think it's more powerful *for Jamie* because it's Roy, who's been sniping at him the whole time, who Jamie *said* he's been looking up to and respecting since his childhood. Roy, who's bad at showing that he cares, but clearly (to us) does. So Roy's hug is going to mean a lot, as a coach, mentor, older man, role model, that Sam, as a team-mate who Jamie only recently has begun to respect (more like a younger brother), just can't match.

Coach Kent teaching those young men by example. One of my favorite moments of the show

Using George Harrison's "Beware of Darkness" in this scene was a master stroke.
Whoever put this shit together really knew what they were doing.
Oh yeah! Couldn't agree more.
The music through out the series was so well done, my favourite was the use of Leader of the Landslide at the end of episode 9.
