In the last weeks if someone asks me about a good cheap action camera there’s one model I recommend a lot - Akaso V50x - and it is totally worth every single penny.
It is cheaper than the other v50 models, and in my opinion - way better. And its qualities are beyond what’s visible from the specs - very good color science, very good build quality, a lot of useful resolutions supported and the best in class stabilization.
Let’s start with the awesome Akaso packaging, with a lot of useful accessories and two available batteries - so that you can easily swap in case needed.
The “heart” of the camera is a Hisilicon chipset, and a Sony 13MP IMX Sensor.
The display is touch, and very well responding, and - the great part is that the camera is also equipped with buttons - meaning that when it comes to diving it is quite good.
For the button navigation - Akaso stick to the traditions - on off button on the front and a lot of controls on the sides. Top is the shutter button, and the side buttons go up and down in the menus. Which without the waterproof case are easier to handle from the touch screen.
I can say that 30FPS in 4K is a delight to watch, and while the stabilization is not “rock-steady” or “hypersmooth” as labeled for other action cameras - it is very close to them, and - just carefully watch how smooth this video is.
Supported also is 2K at 60FPS - this is slightly more than FULL HD but still a little better than FULL hd and lets you crop around 5 percent without anyone noticing if your targeted format is Full HD. There also is a feature to reduce the wide-angle distortion - and you will eventually find out that it can’t simultaneously run with stabilization. Kind of expected at this price point - there still are very few cameras capable of doing it. Angle corrections - allowing narrower FOV done with a software crop, car mode, WDR - I simply am amazed how many the available features are.
And - the big surprise - at the time publishing this video there should already be an available external microphone support. Perhaps the first action cam on the market with microUSB port that can handle external mic - which limits you to the Akaso option only, but immediately turns this into the most affordable 4K actioncam with stabilization in 4K and external audio.
And now I will finally say something negative! The smartphone app - this time, instead of building it themselves, akaso use the Roadcam App, which is primarily for car DVRs - and well deserves its rating of 2.4 out of 5 stars in play store and app store. And this is a sin we will easily forgive.
Doing reviews about awesome products also feels awesome, and hope part of that good mood is now with you. What do you think of the V50X?

THANK YOU. Finally, someone who mentions the chipset, image sensor, bit rates. Us techie folks like the nitty gritty details.
Yeah, that's very important to me as otherwise it is hard to set the right expectations for image quality and performance, right 🙂👍
@@TechMishka my v50x arrived today. Put it on my bike and went for a ride. It's good, but I'm so surprised by the high bit rate at 720p30. Wasted file space.
Excellent job on this review. I bought the cam (prior to your vid) after about a weeks research of all action cams under $150.00 for all the reasons you mentioned in your review. I even purchased the now available external mic. Thank you for reaffirming my decision on the purchase of the V50X. I paid $105.00 shipped via Amazon, including the external mic and recommended sd card.
You got an amazing deal! Have a lot of fun using it.
This is how review should be done, most videos I saw actually confused more than providing in depth information.

Michael, you mindfulness guru !!! Those shots in the forests and you smiling from all of your heart made my day full bright and happy. Yes, this is the best action camera at 100$. I'm gonna buy it for Christmas from Aliexpress. 👌😌😊🤗
Such a positive man you are! Now you made me smile short before falling asleep today 🙃Thank you! 🤗
Took it to Kangaroo Island last weekend. Fantastic.
Much better than we though it would be. Captured underwater dolphins, seals, fish, later eagles, echidna etc... the whole bit. Incredible stabilization. h.265. Time lapse from car... awesome.
Thanks Michael. I'm a long distance truck driver looking for some new recording hardware. This review just sold 3 Akaso camera's. Thanks again Michael.
Glad I could help!
Great review! Loved the part where you switched from internal to external microphone. That showed how different they are and we otherwise wouldn’t have known. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Microphone quality is quite important for videos, and I often test them here.
@@TechMishka Is the Akaso external mic bluetooth or does it use a cord? My main use of the Akaso v50 is filming action sports so how compatible is this mic with action stuff?
I just started to be interested in action cameras recently in late 2023. This is one of the most honest channels I have watched so far. Thanks for the reviews. I watched some other action camera of yours. You did mention everything I was worrying about a budget action camera. Thank you. I just bought V50x and will follow up after I receive it.
Wow, thanks! I hope you will enjoy yours a lot!

Thanks man! This video really helped me choose wether or not I should get it, especially since it was 40% off when I bought it. I saw that the new version was a bit worse in quality but some aspects were improved like the audio. I also watched many of your videos about Redmi products and loved them too! :)
Glad I could help!
Many thanks, amazing production quality. I was very uncertain about Akaso versions, almost purchased a Brave 4 4K before I realized it has no touch screen or EK7000. Bought the V50x to use as action and webcam. I had to research more info on the latter. Cheers
Yup , the V50X got a few nice updates and great to see that actioncam makers now think about using them as webcam.

Yeah, I also believe the V50X offers better quality.
Have you had problems with audio out of sync on long recordings up to 6mins.?
You are honest, I m your new subscriber
Thanks and welcome
Got this today, mostly to document my canoeing adventures, unboxed it, it's simple to use. The documentation is lacking, so I'm struggling with how to use the accessories, what to use to mount to what, and the app is meh. But the camera itself seems pretty good and this review assures me that it was in fact a sound purchase.
The user guide is showcasing most of the accessories. Majority of them use the 1/4-inch mount thread on the camera itself. The rest is down to creativity - but better try the different combinations before going outdoors.
Now I know what I want this Christmas

Thanks for your review. My research for an action camera has brought me to Akaso V50X a few times. I've been debating between this one and Apeman A80. Giving the Akaso one a shot after watching this!👍👍
I'd also go for the V50X if the choice is between these both.
How about durability ? If it gets accidental drop ( waist , chest and head height ) will it survive the impact ? Thanks in advance and keep reviewing and showing us how it should be done . More power to channel . BRAVO! Top ! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻👍👌😉
This one is quite lightweight so the chances of surviving are good. While testing the Campark V30 I crashed it while it was on the 4WD buggy and it survived. I even managed to scratch the lens - which is visible in some parts of the video. Both are very similar in terms of specs and build quality - so that one should be good.
I don't know why it gets so much hate. Its a damn good option for those who don't want to spend the bucks for GoPro and others.
Totally!
this cam is really crap...gopro is one and the best...video quality of this akaso cam is catastrophic
I beg to differ that this is a good action camera. I had this setup on my motorcycle and the video was terrible. I traded up to a GoPro Hero8 black. I would not recommend this as an action camera when it comes to being mounted on a motorcycle or a fast moving vehicle when using video stabilization. Does not compare to my GoPro Hero7 black. Electronic stabilization is very weak when filming at high speed and degrades video quality to the point you cannot use it.
He already said that stabilization is not good here, it is 100$ camera.
We'll see, I plan to make vids via my hot rod. Not as fast as either of my bikes, but fast none the less. If it doesn't work out, I'll upgrade to the the GoPro. If not, I'll have a decent cam for walking around events, shows etc. On a side note, I've read many bad reviews about the Hero 7 black. More about that model than any other GoPro actually.
Let's also talk about the price difference those go pros are upwards of $300-$400
6:43 Lad 💪. no nonsense. good channel. buying this camera.

Hi! I'm From the PH and unfortunately I can't use the link for discount in my country. However I just want to say thank you for this review, because of this review I decided to just buy this action cam for personal use when Riding my motorcycle. I had a hard time deciding between go pro hero 8 and this v40x akaso. but again as you always say in this vlog it is indeed the best 100$ range action cam ever produced. And I think it has the best value for my money
You're so welcome! Right now the GoPro Hero 7 Black is around $250 - which is also something to consider.
The V50X by Akaso is also a great choice for motovlogging. Have a lot of fun! 👍
Thank you for the very helpful review. Some reviewers have complained that the quality of 1080p recorded by the V50X is terrible. What did you think of it?
Everyone is free to have opinion. I've heard some saying that about the V50 Pro. I like a lot the quality on the X.
You had just made me bought one! Hopefully good for my newbie vlogging. Thanks brah
Glad I could help!

BTW, I said it before, but I will say it again. This is one of the best UA-cam channels for tech!

And I still think is the best $100 device.

Hi Chris, so great to emeet you! And hope to see you around more often 😊
Hi guys,
I have a V50X that produces strange footage.
The footages that I imported to Premier Pro always have a Alvin the Chipmunk sound, but they play fine in VLC player.
Does anyone encounter this issue? If yes, can you let me know how you solve it?
This is a very nasty bug and Adobe have always been poor about improving their codec.
I usually re-encode in h.264 using Tencoder and using the maximum possible quality, so that there is minimal loss.
@@TechMishka Thank you for your reply, yes, I had to convert all my footages from V50X with VLC to have them play normally in premier pro :(
I wish there is a more straight forward fix
You doin great on the review Sir, love it

Hope you enjoy it!
High Michael! Excellent review...camera does take amazing looking video and photos..however, I wish manufacturers would give us that one port we need! 3.55mm mic input!! If it had one...would be an excellent vlogging/review camera.
Yeah, I also miss that, mate. In these little cameras it is hard to find space about everything, so I well understand why everyone tries to get away from 3.5mm jacks, even smartphone makers :(
Is it still worth buying today or are there better alternatives for the same price?
Just went ahead and bought one, I don't need high quality audio since I use my action cams on my surfboards most of the time (and use my Osmo Pocket for non water video!). Stoked to start shooting with mine! Sorry, SJCam, Akaso's making a better product at a better price point!
Yeah, hard to beat that one when it comes to good price.
In fact SJCAM have reached out to me through a PR-agency, and asked me to do another review of the renewed version of SJ9. Furthermore - now I seem to have reached an agreement with their support about getting a replacement, so once my vacation is over, I will send the faulty unit back. Let's see how things will develop further.
@@TechMishka I'm glad they are paying attention and want to address these problems, that's a good sign! I'm still jazzed for my Akaso to arrive tho!

I think I got the first one in Australia, from AliExpress... wife's birthday. Yes, she did want one :D
Looking forward to the mic. Post a follow up please.

Whoah it somewat drop to $90 now..seems pretty good value and more stable than my 4k seabird
I can't say it is much of an upgrade to the Seabird, honestly. And parsing any video through google photo's stabilization will make the video smooth enough.
in fact this camera has a lot of similarities with the Rexso Explorer K by Elecam.
That footage looks great. The cheap action cam rabbit hole is very confusing. I want something that is not 300 dollars, that is good for motorcycling. Akaso is on my radar but they have so many it is confusing.

@@TechMishka I got the action 3. to good of a deal and the camera looks great.
Now!
In October 2021, the Akaso V50X comes in a factory batch of 4nd generation versions. The video quality is very different from the first production a lot.
Is it better or worse than the first gen?
It's gonna sound like I'm coming on really strong; but I'm not. I luv your reviews; because of you I'm placing an order for this camera as soon as this video finishes. …And thank you; for not playing loud incoherent music in you review(s)/video👍

Most welcome. Have fun! 😇
AKASO V50-X Update: After much experimentation, I have found that this Camera performs very well with the latest firmware of Nov 2019 except that when using the APP "ACASO Go" or "RoadCAM," the issue is that the soundtracks with either internal or external mics have Pops and Crack sounds. I have not been able to find a workaround for this issue. If you make movies without using the App(s), no problems using this Camera. In this mode, I would give it a 10 out of 10, including video quality (4k) and sound (internal or external mics.) Let us hope they fix this sound issue with their App in the next update
Thanks Ricky - an awesome summary! If you have a link to that one somewhere - would be great.
Thank you Great review

Most welcome!
I've brought my old actioncam, an SJcam M10 with me on my last vacation. Wished I'd bought this one before.
The M10 is not much worse than that.
@@TechMishka The M10 was a decent camera for it's time and price. Used it for over 6 years on motortrips and hollidays. Always filmed at 1080p 60fps which I think gave decent videos for the time.
But the menu and the use of it on this camera is really terrible. And a lot of (older) SJcams seemed to have the same menu structure.
On my last holliday the camera suddenly got back to it's default settings (you scroll through all the modes when changing, including the setting and playback screen). Which activated loop recording and timestamp. I didn't noticed on the small screen that timestamp was activated on playback and it took me a lot of effort to remove it. Minnor thing of the M10+ is also that it only accepted SD-cards up to 32GB. Which is a bit low. So I thought it was a good time for an upgrade.
Just got this V50x as a replacement for my SJcam M10+ today.
The camera itself seems to be a big improvement. Especially the touchscreen and the menu structure. The menu really s*cks at the M10+. Although I seem to miss some WIFI settings on the V50x.
But the included mounts are of really cheap and bad quality!
The much cheaper M10+ had really nice and decent mounts included, which I fortunately can use on the V50x case too.
Talking about the case... It actually also feels verry cheap. And more like somekind of universal case. I miss the buffer ring which the M10+ case had to it's lens. On the V50x is 0 protection. But maybe I can print a nice protective ring which I can glue to it.
Going to test the camera further this week :)
Got one not from this suggestion and I'm hoping to get it out on the road. Too bad the support for other brand mic is not happening still in 2023. We'll see with their little mic but I'm just happy to be able to afford to mount this up on my helmet. Stay tuned for my first moto vlog coming soon.
Let's hope it will be fine. There are different hardware revisions of this action camera though and as far as I know it no longer uses the same SoC (it was huawei-made...)
holy christ it sucks, check my first upload the sound is beyond horrible.
So if to compare with pro Se and elite what would you recommend for a camera mainly to be used to film the kids in activity as phones are distracting them.
Thank you for all the good reviews btw
Hi Tom! I would still prefer the V50X :D
But from what you say - will definitely use the Pro SE.
Just got this cam today and checked it against SJCAM M20 I still have. Tried only indoors (pretty bright) and compared... On my SJCam only 2.7 K is the highest setting. The footage from Akaso (4K??????) literally SUCK. Maybe it behaves better outdoors but this I will know tomorrow.
Yeah, that's the thing with non-4K cameras. Indoors at low light - older sensors are better. Pretty basic math - same size of the sensor, less pixels. Meaning that each pixel receives more light.
This is why an old device like the SJ4000 and the M20 are way better in low light than other models.
Hi @Teach4All, Thank you for this video. I am searching the third action camera for my moto bike vloging tours. I am already using Go pro black 9, and Sony a6500. Third camera I will use it only for one position, from the steering wheel to look at my direction and to make this kind of shots. Do you think this camera is good enough for that purpose. Thank You!!!
Nah, they already use different hardware. Try to find a cheap second hand GoPro Hero 7 or newer.
i like the akaso v50x
Same here! 😉
This was very helpful, Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Very well.... hehe, I liked your review. And I didn't skip the ads to show my support. God bless and more power to your channel.
Is that a real thing to not skip ads? I'm not sure, a part of my wants thinks they would want you to show you are still watching by skipping them, then it is purely on the marketeers as to whether they got your interest in the 5 or so seconds. They want to know they are not wasting their money on people that aren't even watching maybe but I really have not idea.
Thank you so much 🤗
I have a question about my akaso v50x. I am trying to take a night time-lapse, but I have a problem. I changed the exposure time to 5 seconds (under the photo settings) so that there would be enough light getting to the sensor in the dark environment. I tried taking a few photos and they turned out really good, but when I tried to take a time-lapse, it just used the auto exposure settings so the entire time-lapse turned out way to dark because the sensor was not getting enough light. I am able to change the settings for photos, but when I take a time-lapse it doesn't use my photo settings. (just to confirm, I am doing the photo time-lapse, not the video time-lapse) and ideas? Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Same here... Looks like what you are trying to get is not supported by the firmware.
@@TechMishka ya, its too bad, because the night photos actually turned out not bad. Maybe I'll have to go out one night, and just click the photo button on the controller every 30 seconds lol
Hii..very informative, thank you Michael!! One doubt is still bugging me, what type of memory card you slipped inside
Most class.10 cards will be fine. Please note that in 2023 Akaso sell this model with different hardware inside and it is no longer that good.
Thank you Michael for the info. It helps a lot. Im thinking which of the action cam in your vlogs will be best for indoor use? Budget wise please
None of the action cams will give you great footage indoors... Best chance is to disable image stabilization - this will slightly enhance the image quality.
@@TechMishka thanks much!

Hi AJC, yeah - this is a great camera for motovlogging.
Thank you for this review
My pleasure!
I always get great advices from you! My old old SJCam M20 is getting older and I am in the market for a replacement. Should I go for the Akaso V50X, or save for the DJI Osmo Action or perhaps the Xiaomi Fimi Palm? Which one will you take? Thanks!
Hey Rony, thanks for the kind comment!
I believe the DJI Osmo Action is a fantastic action camera and well worth the price. After the release of GoPro Hero 9 I saw it discounted at a few places. Its stabilization is pretty much gimbal-like.
@@TechMishka Thanks buddy, just my thought)
I really want to understand how you tested external microphone? I am willing to buy same self powered microphone setup as you tested in the video, could you please provide details? I have Maono AU-100 which is self powered and works with dslr and with cellphones in different modes. will this work on V50x? what kind of converter you used like aux to micro usb? Waiting eagerly for your update, Thanks in advance!
Prashant - I have used an entirely separate system, which is independent to the camera. Main reason is that a dedicated recorded has better audio quality.
Here's what I use"
- Zoom H1 (very old - you can find second hand ones at around 60-70USD). There is now a new version - Zoom H1
- Aputure a.lav - which is no longer being manufactured and replaced by V.Luv - which I do NOT recommend; Get a budget Lav Mic and you will be fine.
@@TechMishka thanks, I will wait for Akaso's official V50X external microphone. Just to let you know, DUPLICATE video is posted on this URL, please take necessary action: ua-cam.com/video/cSnc4CCiM7g/v-deo.html
The video is great. The audio on the other hand is dismal. I have one and it will do duty as a dash camera where no sound is needed. For anything where one wants audio its useless
Yeah, quite a disadvantage.
I was considering getting the v50 pro after watching countless comparison videos, it seemed to have the best clarity and internal mic. Can you tell me why you prefer the V50X over the V50 Pro any opinions you could share would be greatly appreciated and will hopefully help me make a more informed purchase thank you
Generally I am not a fan of the iCatch V50 chipset used in the Pro, but it is a great camera overall. From both options I've always preferred the V50X.
@@TechMishka great thanks so much! great videos some of the best i have seen

thanks for the review
Always welcome, Majed! 🙃
I am about to purchase an action camera to record my tennis matches - dont need a whole lot of stabilization although will be good to have just in case. I just need good 1080 or 1440 definition at 60fps so that the videos look good. Would the v50X or the brave 7le be best in this case? Saw your 7le review and your comment about the 1080p quality disheartened me, but never saw anything regarding 2k.
The current V50X series have pretty bad 60fps modes
is there any other cheap camera with good stabilization? maybe now 2021 there is better options
Nothing with better stabilization at this price.
What about auto-focusing? Is it OK? I'm about to buy this camera for indoor unboxing videos. Is it going to worth ?
This action camera has infinity focus - so you don't care about auto focusing :-)
This is excellent for it's price. Have you experienced audio sync issue? I've seen a lot of that even in latest firmware.
It might happen after a few minutes of recording.
Hi. I enjoy your reviews very much, and I would like to ask if you think the Akaso V50x is better than the Eken H6s. Keep up the good work.
Hi Ricardo, thanks a lot for your kind words.
Yes, in my opinion is that the H6S is the better camera.
@@TechMishka can you please advise if eken h9r is better than akaso 50x and whu
Hii do you know if the go pro accesories work with this cam? Awesome channel by the way I just got this one based on your reviews!
Hey Blue - most GoPro accessories work with this camera, yeah
Great detailed video. Menu system and looks seem identical to Dragon Touch Vista 5 model which is slightly cheaper. Do they have the same spec?
They are about the same, yeah.
Hi, great review! Would you recommend this camera over the Apeman A100 trawo? Which one does better in low light filming?
Both will have comparable results in low-light; maybe the Apeman model will be slightly better.
Hi! great video, do you think the stabilizer is doing the job for trails mountain biking?
In some cases it will be fine. But is not even close to what GoPro Hero 7 & 8 can do.
Hello, thanks for the reviews. Would you recommend the V50X over the V50 Elite?
I would be using for UA-cam videos while on cruises and the temps tend to get very hot.
The V50X seems to use different hardware now in 2023. So I am no longer sure which is the better one...
@@TechMishka Thanks.
Good review
Thank you!
Awesome action cam review as always!
What I would like to see included is the loss in Field of View when stabilization is on.
Larger FoV is a key aspect when buying an action cam so we can point at the scenery and extract the most of it.
So sad I see little to no comparisons of FoV between action cams in youtube.
The FOV gets cropped usually by 5-10%. All the samples that are slow-motion use the full width of the sensor, so you can see how much more it captures.
@@TechMishka Thanks for the tip! But is there any reason for not comparing the FoV between action cams? I would love a quick side-by-side with the competing offerings on the reviews.
@@linofoliveira Because the FOV is mostly a cropped image, and only worsens the quality; Better such things to be done in post production.
Hello Michael, did you experience v50x getting warm when you were testing it? I saw a feedback from one of the customers who bought v50x and said the camera he got was getting warm. I was half steppin buying the camera but i really this v50 x because of your good review
This processor is generally warm; But I haven't had any heating issues with the V50X.
@@TechMishka thanks for the input
Can we use EIS in 1080p/60fps 170° settings??
Yeah, but it's not too effective.
Michael, between this and the Seabird? Which would you choose?
They have very similar specs, and I like the menus of this one a little better. And more accessories; Both are great though.
Tech4All Thxs for replying, I bought the Akaso V50x, it’s good for 83 USD, good stabilization and not so good over sharpening and dynamic range. Thanks Michael
How is this at capturing the true colors of the sunset? I’m getting it because I have very shaky hands and need the stabilization!
It will be okay-ish. It has very small image sensor, so it may not be great. And you may want to use custom white balance in order to reproduce the colors correctly.
Hey man. Thanks for the video, how is this camera for POV driving videos?
Thanks
It's good!
I believe in low light it is not as good as some 1080p dash cameras because of the pixel density.
