Hi Ash. Would you need any special permit to ride the quadricycle on the roads? It is 5.1m long after all. One good thing about being heavy is that the wind won't tip it over.
No special permit needed as far as I know! The electric assist is 250 watts and does not need to be registered. Anything over 250 watts does though. However things will change soon enough as there is going to be some tweaking on the regulations in Europe and then that will filter to us as we follow them!
I had my reservations about the size of your rig . Its great that you saved weight by using tubing but I think there is just too much there . Have you given any thaught into making your bike a hybrid liquid fueled engine / elwctrical motor set up ?
Thank you, it is a lot of fun. The weight of the trailer was an issue in regards to a diff, at least that’s what I am lead to believe. I contacted Samagaga and told them what the weight would be and they said they didn’t have anything that could handle it, I also never really asked Ben at Trisled as to why he didn’t put one on, I figure he knows best. That being said I do believe I need something as that wheel spins in gravel going up a hill and almost all bike paths here are made of gravel.
@@offgridmojo Alternative to diff could be a freewheel on both wheels but that requires some custom parts. You could try asking "velomo" from germany. Really awesome build, thanks for sharing! EDIT: Never mind, it seems the quad has only one driven wheel so doesn't need a diff!
I agree, 2 1000watt hub motors, controllers, and 2 20ah 48v batteries would set you back around $1200 but would be worth it as you could climb nearly any hill with them.
The issue with anything over 250 watts is illegal here in Oz! I have heard on the grape vine though that they are looking at changing that limit higher due to cargo weight etc. Basically Australia has the same legislation that the EU has, so once it changes there my guess will be we will follow suit! I would like an extra wheel on either side at the back of both the prime mover and semi trailer, but that may just be romantic ideas as I don’t have enough knowledge of these things to realise if that’s even possible!
@@offgridmojo Thank you for replying. If that were the case here I think I would just install an AGNI/Lynch High power axial gap DC motor (a fantastic motor invented by Cedric Lynch of the UK) and register it how he did. He rides a 2 wheeled fully enclosed motorcycle powered by his motor on UK roads almost every day possible. That motor can make from .1-15hp depending on current input therefore it's amazing. Maybe you'll have to register and accommodate your vehicle as a motorcycle?
@@offgridmojo Also-here in the USA I ride a mountain bike with 1500 watt hub motors both front and rear with a pair of 1.5k controllers mated to one 20ah 48v battery. I'm sure it's not completely legal or even nearly, yet I have travelled over 10k miles while breaking many traffic laws without being pulled over by the police, and 50k miles on gas powered bike conversions in my past with no problems whatsoever. My plan was always to just pay the ticket if I got one, but so far so good.
@@ProlificInvention Yeah I have often thought about just taking my chances and going more power etc, funnily enough though it’s not the power that concerns me the most or the speed! Main concern is will the rig hold together, will it crumble under so much weight etc!
Dunno know that yet either, as I said in the last upload I will tweak the bafang controller first and build a more powerful battery, failing that I will start to deduct weight, ie : fridge, go with smaller battery inside semi trailer etc.
@@offgridmojo - if can offer some thoughts, (just thinking here). Smaller fridge will weigh considerably less. And most suburban/country butchers will happily vacuum seal meat/veg whatever for you for $3 a bag. That will keep for many weeks in a smaller fridge if packed carefully. Also the Joolca is an unnecessary luxury and extra weight. Especially when you take into account the gas cylinder required. When I was cycle touring I used a JetBoil to heat a mug of water. Pore that into a regular $16 solar shower that weighs close to nothing. Top up with tap water to fill the bag and to bring the water temp back to "warm". Bingo. A shower that is ready in minutes and weighs sweet bugger all. Plus the JetBoil makes your coffee. (and can be a suitable single burner cooker if required) (my wife and I, and two dogs, now travel in a 4wd and small camper and we decided that the Joolca was just too much extra weight. Easier and (almost) just as fast to use the method above...) I understand that you plan to live in the camper. So it's nice to have it more like "home" and less like "camping". But there is no reason to *not* embrace some of the light-weight aspects of traditional cycle touring for some of the heavier equipment that you need.
@@morepawstravels Hi Wayne, thank you for your input bud, it is appreciated. I feel a bit better about the weight now that I have ridden it a few times fully loaded! I have been living very rusticly for some years now and if I can I will keep the Joolca, once I have the correct connections I can use a smaller gas bottle and see how that goes! The fridge is definitely something worth swapping out for a smaller one though.
I can hear the disappointment in your voice. It's an expense but have you given any thought to hub motors? Effectively you can pop a 1000w in each wheel (even the trailer wheels) and still keep the mid drive Bafang motor.
Yeah it was a bit heart braking! Yeah I need to do something for sure, when I get some more money I will talk to Ben about what can be done, other than that I had another ride on it today and I feel better now with how it performs. I had forgotten how difficult it is going up hills even on the green speed magnum with kids trailer on the back it’s very slow, dunno what I was expecting the quad to do differently, hehehe, especially with all the weight it tows.
@@offgridmojo - the 1000w hub motors sound like a good idea. Maybe the two rear wheels of the quad. Use them as a "last resort" to make it over some especially brutal hills. The other thing that might work is to swap the trailer hubs for Dynamo hubs. Every little bit of juice will help. Could also do the same to the front wheels of the Quad.
Superb you are genius your idea is great. Just keep working on it
Thanx Arif, I shall indeed.
Super Gespann gruß aus Deutschland 🇩🇪👍👍👍
Danke Braun.
Great video, you have come a long way mate, well done!
Thanx mate, it’s a heap of fun, soon I purchase the drone and a vloggers music subscription which will make the touring bits look and sound better!
You've got some thinking to do.
Where there's a will, there's a way.
My mate painted all the sculptures down the foreshore at Tooradin. I was there today
I was there yesterday on my way to Nyora. I love Tooradin.
@@offgridmojo yeah it's beautiful can't understand it not being rural
What suburb along there represents the zone line between metro and rural?

👏🥰👏👍
Move the trailer wheels to the centre of gravity.the trailer has a lot of load on the trike.less weight on the towbar makes it easier to pedal .
Hi Gavin, thanx for chiming in mate, that is exactly what I did and it has made a huge difference!
