Tim, the new format is just as great as the previous format. While we may not be seeing you as you talk, it does appear to give you more freedom to give us better video of exactly what's going on, with the additional time you've had to reflect upon what you want to say. Excellent choice for a new format
@@TimBatSeaI’ll counter this and say I really appreciated the “live” play-by-play. I enjoyed hearing the radio calls, the back and forth with the deck hands, and hearing you think through a problem rather than narrating it afterwards.
I really like this format. It is very educational to listen to you explain what you’re doing and why you’re doing it the way you are. Not being a mariner I’m learning how different tides affect the boat. It’s fascinating to learn how you you use the engines and rudders to make the boat do what you need it to do. Thank you so much
I dont know about bikes on a dock but in the day at the bath iron works most of the leading men had had bikes to get to the drydock. If you found one left un attended it could end up anywhere. In the ship, on the mast or in the bathroom. Great fun and we were bad kids. Great video.
You explain the difficulty yet make it look so easy. Your empathy towards your crew is awesome. When I moved from a maintenance technician to a field service technician, I installed industrial equipment with methods to help make it easier on the maintenance people who would have to work on the equipment. Those are things that are not taught in school but learned thru experience which is the best teacher.
It's almost always easier to understand what we're seeing if the video begins with a map to orient us with a sense of where we are, where we're going and where significant landmarks might be. It wasn't until a third of the way through today's video that I had any idea of where you were going to land the barge. But it's always good to be aboard with you.
Thank you for watching Jim. Funny you say that, I just added a piece showing on the plotter where we would be going in a future video. I'll try to put them in more often. CUOTO
First, the new format is pretty much the Growler Jams of the sea which is great. I do miss "being" in the pilot house a bit, but the content is still fantastic. Also, your explanation of walking the boat is great. I was running through my head, and figured if you couldn't walk the barge/tug combo, you could at least move the pivot point forward, which seems to be exactly what you did in this video.
Funny, you mentioned the bicycles coming down to the dock. Back in the nineties I used to ride the Worksman bike down to the dock. That’s is how I would be early waiting on you guys. Best I can do for you Captain is not skip the ads, I do have time for that. CUOTO
I like this new format, Captain! It rolls out smoothly, and your explanations aren't interrupted with radio calls, etc. Ok! I admit the live radio com’s were kind of cool! Lol! 😏Thanks for another great video. -Doc Lykins, VA PS- Now you've got me watching “Growler Jams” too! 😄🫡🇺🇸
This is totally irrelevant to your video, but I just visited a place called Ocean State Job Lots (I think.) and it turns out that they have a HUGE canned fish section and I came home tonight with 6 cans of King Oscar sardines and a couple of cans of smoked oysters. The gentleman at the counter seems to indicate that while inventory in the store fluctuates, King Oscar is not only a regular item but a very popular item. They also stock many varieties of kipper, clams and several configurations of anchovies from canned to the paste - I use them all.
Thank you, it is so good to have you back, hope you are feeling better! Like so many others, I'm enjoying the new format, it really is better in helping us understand how/why you maneuver the barges. But like others, I also miss the radio chatter - it would be great if you had the original audio playing in the background of your new videos - that way you could explain the communications aspect of the operation too. As much as I loved your "live action" videos, sometimes it was hard for us to understand what was being said, and why. I also vote for just leaving a couple of cameras running while you are working, but with you ignoring them and just going about your work - then you could explain things when you are doing your voice overs. That would be terrific! (if it would be allowed by the new regs) Thanks again, we love both of your channels!
Thank you very much for watching both channels! I really appreciate that. This is only the second video in the new format, and I hope to add things as we go. A radio track is on the wish list. CUOTO
Hi Tim, I am not sure if you have ever heard of the Lake Geneva steam ferries? Not the mailboats of Lake Geneva Wisconsin, but the one in Switzerland. A company there has 7 steam side paddle wheel steamers built between 1902 and 1927. They're very popular for crossing the lake as it is very long to drive around. I am in Southern France for work and staying over the weekend. I took the chance yesterday to go visit and do a 8 hour ride halfway down the lake and back. There were about a dozen stops on the trip. What made me think if you was the fact that their vessel handling approach was the exact opposite kf yours. You have a calm, gentle and patient approach to docking. Not them, I'd call it impact docking. They'd cut power maybe 30 seconds before, then back hard at the last second. Many tines we had significant headway at the point if contact. No soft protection either, it was steel vessel against steel pilings and the pilings were all beat up as was the rub rail of the ship. I'm still getting my land legs back. I didn't think about it when booking, but luckily I'm not sensitive. By the late afternoon the lake had about 8 foot swells. It wasn't bad in the following seas, but we had several zig-zags across for some stops so they had to turn into the waves and it rocked around good. Overall a cool experience.
Pretty Impressive conning. Tide going one way, wind going another and you have to maneuver. Why go starboard side to?, Cause that's where the customer wants it... Noticed on your approach that the buoy wasn't giving any signals as to tide, but that the water was certainly giving signals as to wind. Was there good water all around in this area? As to mistakes, if you never made any, what or how would you learn? Are the wakes of those tugs having any affects on you?
Thank you very much for watching. Sometimes when the wind is against the tide it is less obvious to see on the buoy. When at a stand still at the dock, an opposing wake has little effect on us. CUOTO
Thank you very much for watching and welcome to the channel Randy. Yes. The tankermen live on the barge. I have an older video showing the crew quarters on a barge. Let me know if you can't find it. CUOTO
Great video. I agree with others this is a good format. Probably makes it easier for you to work radios and do other things. Any idea how old the piles are ahead of you? Just guessing it could go back to 1940's or older.
Thanks, another great video with a successful landing. Airlines abort landings when conditions warrant it. Have you ever had to "come around again" despite your best efforts? A vessel gets in your way, a problem on the dock, etc. Is that Plan C?
Absolutely! Thank you for watching. Yes. Sometimes you try to get into a dock, but for one reason or another you miss the tide. Sometimes you know you might be able to do a job with an assist but one isn't available. Sometimes you just come in at a bad angle and opt to go around again. CUOTO
