      @@TimBatSea I hear most of the NY cops live in a particular long island suburb though I forgot the name, but I do figure a marine biologist would be motivated to prevent oil spills, my Israel comment was partly to break up partisan coalitions, Hamas vs abortion rights but also EVs vs nuclear power. Pride vs Palestine has clashed mildly now in both Philadelphia and Toronto. Full colonial Roe applied to Puerto Rico, but not the Dominican Republic or Haiti. Caribbean abortion rights vs anti-colonialism is fascinating, as in the Falklands, and not reflected in partisanship.

    Your thoughts are the same as mine. Hi Tim!
    Had to resubscribe. No problem.
    Watching your videos is therapeutic.
    Your boat-handling is a joy to observe. But so it should be - you’ve been doing it for long enough!
    When you stop and think about the inertia generated by that tonnage moving through the water, it’s easy to understand how a bridge management error can bring about such catastrophic results.
    Keep doing what you do, Skipper!

There's so much going on at once and you need to be across it all, 3 people talking at once on the radio, what's the barge doing? what's the water doing? what's the weather doing? where's my camera pointing? where is every other vessel going? is everyone safe? what's for lunch? I worked for an employee of theirs a number of times over the years. He operated ocean going tugs. He recently passed. I have 3 books that he had written over his lifetime career operating a tug.

    Thank you for describing your thinking pattern (did I say that right?) when you are maneuvering. I've never been able to put it in words. Operating LCU's in the Army many years ago we faced similar situations daily. We received very little training and due to the Army using all it's Warrant ranks for helicopter pilots, we had very few on our heavy boats. As a result, the best crew-members operated the boats regardless of rank. We had at least one PFC and several Spec4's doing the job. We went through rolls of Tums like they were candy. My stomach is screwed up to this day over 50 years later. At least you had a beautiful day. Thanks again.

    While I don't own a boat, I observed something fairly cool with some charter cats. E.g. the Lagoon 450 we chartered had its rudders forward of the propellers. I don't know the exact philosophy behind that but it comes in handy - when you're moving forward, you usually have a good water flow over the rudders, so you can steer just fine when sailing. When you're slow, you can just steer with differential power on the engines.
    But when you're docking, that configuration comes in handy: to walk the boat to the left, you steer to the left, then do a left twist. The prop wash of the engine going backwards pushes the stern to the left, the engine going forward pushes the bow to the left. Voila - walking to the left.

    • @TimBatSea
      @TimBatSea  7 місяців тому +1

      Thank you very much for watching. Yes. In a typical configuration, you have no directional control of reverse thrust other than the way you make. But flanking rudders, or rudders in front of the wheels do the exact opposite. CUOTO

    • @VeganSurf
      @VeganSurf 7 місяців тому

      IMO this is a terrible design that really shows the design decisions that go into charter cats - it is done to increase sailing speed / allow a smaller rudder (in combination with saildrives which are also ridiculously overcomplex and basically impossible to repair underway / in the water) but you end up with boats that can ONLY be controlled in close quarters/docking/low speeds if both engines are working... What's the point of 2 engines for redundancy if you can only steer the boat with both of them?

    • @realulli
      @realulli 7 місяців тому

      @@VeganSurf I wouldn't be so sure about the small rudder. I think it's even somewhat larger than one aft of the screws, since it needs to control the boat under way without the engines running.
      I agree with you about the issue with the sail drives but I'd need to try out the feasibility of traveling on one engine for extended distances (partly also to save fuel after having a problem (e.g. losing your mast) in the middle of an ocean and trying to reach land before you run out of fuel).
      I think I'll post that question to a few cat cruisers with that configuration... 🙂

    I stumbled onto your channel & really enjoyed your boating skil & your political thoughts. I have been boating for many years. It is interesting, you can always learn. My experialce is mostly on Sail boats. so your way to have a boat go sideways may not work. I do find that most sail biats go to port when going astern. This has to do with the rotation of the prop. WE have to take this into consideration whe backing. Thanks for your point of view regarding friends!!

    Tim, most twin engine pleasure boats that are internal engines have a bow thruster, they can walk to port easily using it. set rudder for a turn to right and use the thruster to push to the left, you go left.

      I kinda have to disagree with the ..most twin inboard engine pleasure boats having bow thrusters, I would say most over 50ft, I have owned or been on several twin inboard boats from 28’ to 42’ that did not have bow thrusters, of course I’m speaking of the older wooden boats. You may be correct about the newer glass hull yachts which are way above my budget…lol

    Friendship has to be based on trust. I might be able to trust someone on the little things, when they're within my eyesight, but if I can't trust someone's loyalty to our community, I'll stick close to them for another reason.

They would not allow me to skydive, unless I brought my own gear...so I brought my own gear the next month. Had a blast skydiving in Australia and Hawaii that month. Blue Sky's.

    Tim laying down truth bombs on political opinions!! If we all followed this advice, the world would be e better place. A politician (who I typically disagreed with) once said “it is OK to question someone’s methods, but not their motives”. I have found that to be very helpful. We all want to solve the problems, we just disagree on how. Thanks for the great advice Tim.

    Another great video Tim, It's nice to hear you talking about some other things, the little side track that was most interesting. We folks over in England will certainly be following events in the US later this year. I was thinking, let's say your boss phones you up. ''Hi Tim, how are you doing, your brand new tug boat arrives in a few days and we sold the one you are on now to a buyer in Amsterdam. We said we would get it to him so we'd like you to top up with diesel and sail across the Atlantic.'' Would that be feasible in a tug boat that size or would it be too risky?

    I always enjoy your channel Tim. I am familiar about the subscription issue lately. I think UA-cam is unsubscribing people after one year and if the subscribers think they are subscribed continuously then they wont notice that. It has happened to me a few times. Kinda frustrating that UA-cam is policing an annual subscription. At least that is what happened to me. I guess they are not notifying subscribers that their subscription is not continouss.

    Dealing with different politics just comes down to wisdom and experience. It was never an issue with my friends who are now in their 50s and up but, it seems some younger folks think you can't be friends with somebody who's politics you disagree with.
    Personally, I respect the opinions of others and they are entitled to live their lives however they want. We don't have to agree but, I ask the same respect in return.
    It's really interesting when some of your friends are bikers (1%er type) and other friends are cops. But, somehow all of that wasn't an issue over the years. Wisdom and experience.

    In a civilized society political differences don't matter. But in a decaying disordered one where rule of law becomes political it does greatly. Neighbors will turn in neighbors, friends and family. Therein lies the danger for wanting to stay in touch. Look around, that is where we are right now.

    The UA-cam subscriber shenanaagins is their way of pruning dormant subscriptions..
    As I understand it, channels rating is improved by subscriber numbers. If those numbers are out of date with people that use to be interested in a channel, UA-cam are "losing out".
    By pruning subscribers, those that are still interested (therefore bona fide subscribers) can resubscribe, those that are no longer interested just let it pass.
    Thats the benevolent version.
    The malevolent version is them trying to reduce their payments to you.

    @17:45 - Back in the day, i was a huge Deadhead. I hung around liberal hippies and partied with them all over G*ds green earth. I came from a Military, very conservative family. Never once did that interfere with the party. Not ever. The only hippie I ever got lippy with hadn't showered in about 3 weeks and in celebration, he was waving his shirt in a huge circle. This brought his shirt and his stench within an inch of my nose. The 4 people I was with and I convinced him to move along. I think we gave him a joint as a consolation prize.
