I personally don't think they ever will get the "cure" until they look at this condition as being rooted in heavy metal toxicity and maybe excess minerals like manganese. In my investigation, I think Mr Fox has a lead issue, and perhaps some other things like iron, and other toxic metals that need to be detoxed. Also needs to remineralize with a solid diet with special developmental foods.

Fun fact: we are not close to identifying bio markers for symptoms ahead of time if it takes numerous years for young people to get diagnosed. MJF was fortunate to be diagnosed early in onset. It took me 8 years - most of my 30s, to be diagnosed at 37. I’m shocked that even then; in 2017 countless medical professionals never took my symptoms seriously. Never did “touch your nose” test. So many young people under 40 get no diagnosis or misdiagnosis. Basic education for neurologists is needed. Sad. However, MJF is a huge game changer and inspiration. I was a fan as a kid in the 80s, now a fan as a fellow Parkinson’s patient
I know I am commenting three years later but I am not sure you are understanding the "touch your nose" test quite right. It is not literally a test for Parkinson's. This skill is a standard neurological test and difficulty doing so or failing to do so is a clue that something is wrong but does not mean Parkinson's is the reason. There can be many. If nobody ever did any neurological testing that might have alerted based on the nose test that's a fair criticism but what would have generated a reason for someone to look if you didn't have symptoms or a history? Generally speaking you are right that doctors have far less knowledge than we think they do. Being an expert on all these issues, just the ones within neurology, is an impossible ask. Most neurologists I deal for my issue have no grasp of it at all. And keeping up with all the changes is daunting. As far as I know some biomarkers have been found, or at least one, over the past three years but finding ways to predict, test for and ultimately prevent the disease in asymptomatic people does appear to be a long ways off unfortunately. Diseases that do silent damage that is all but unstoppable or irreversible by the time symptoms occur are brutal and very difficult to prevent.
Thanks for all the excuses. But let me give you some examples from the many different doctors I saw for my issue. “You’re not using your left arm, you’re being lazy” - responding to my left arm not swinging when I walk “Your left hand is not your dominant hand, if course it’s not as strong as your dominant hand” - when my left hand fingers could not be lifted up from the keyboard and I would type like thissssssssss even though I used to type 90 words a minute previously “He’s young and fit, I’m sure he’s fine” - a neurologist, reading my intake document explaining my symptoms and didn’t know i could hear him outside my door. He proceeded to not take anything seriously and he was done with me in 35 seconds. I can go on. Most common prescribed? Physical therapy and more exercise. For years I would exercise my weak, tremoring left hand arm and leg. Because I was told I didn’t use them enough. Because I was told I was being lazy. I fought a losing battle to a disease that was hiding in plain sight. I sacrificed so much, all because ego of 16 doctors across 3 states. They all blamed me and took nothing seriously. I would beg them with tears to look more and do more tests. Finally, #17 orders a DAT scan. Which isn’t definitive but was positive Parkinson’s activity and finally I was taken seriously There is most certainly a stigma, in both doctors and people, that if you are young and look healthy on the outside, you have nothing wrong on the inside
Micheal j fox deserved better. I’m glad he’s helping people but it’s just so sad to see such a legend like this. I hope one day he will have the chance to get better

I remember back then everyone was saying he was faking it . I didn't believe that for a second - what would he gain ? Just ridiculous and I hope everyone feels really bad for prescribing to that bold lie . He is a class act all the way and is just like his Family Ties character in real life !! They share an incredibly deep sensitivity and some anxieties and they're both empaths but that's only because Michael was intelligent enough to find the magic in a cursed teenager on paper. Let me put it this way - if Matthew Broderick had gotten the part of Alex he would've been shot on the street on a daily basis for saying some of the things that come out of Alex's mouth each episode. I love Alex to my core but some of his statements are too much even for me. Yet I forgive him for everything. And only Michael can get away with telling his on screen mother when she's overloaded with work at a women's community campaign "you experimented with social interaction, had fun, now you can finally go back to where all women actually belong - in the kitchen." And kissing the top of her head like she was his puppy. Can you imagine Matthew's ass face saying that line? There would be nothing left of it by the time this episode aired.

Read his first book, called lucky man. He describes the moment of the diagnosis and everything that followed so clearly, and so deeply, and he's so lucid you actually feel like you're in his heart and in his blood and in his shoes in that moment except you're crying your eyes out. He's not. He's completely shocked, very naturally so. He won't start crying until he sees his wife later that day. It's the most beautiful, chilling 5 pages I've ever read and the most insane part is that the next chapter is hysterical. He was robbed of his physical balance but his mental and emotional balance are stronger than ever. It's truly stunning to experience. David is an asshole but Michael chooses to be the light. Lucky for all of us.
As far as I know Fox's efforts with the foundation and others has indeed found some verified biomarkers. And more than a billion dollars more has been raised and spent since this aired so the progress he predicted is happening but sadly remains far slower than he and all impacted would like. Science is indeed hard but Letterman is of course spot on to emphasize how much more we all know and how much more those impacted are being helped much more so and much faster primarily because of Fox willing to be the public face of and the behind the scenes leader for the push for a cure.

If the doctors explained to him why they asked him to do it when he was 29 years old it would've interfered with his diagnosis. Now that he's aware of it he's touching his nose to explain the test. Medication can work wonders when you're taking the right one for you and he could've struggled with it back then and his symptoms shifted as his illness progressed. Listen to him instead of looking for conspiracy.
