  • SPY27 Spyderco Manix 2 edgeretention testing. What isthis new steel capable of and us it any good? This has the factory edge , first, third, fourth and fifth edges tested to give a view of what this steel does for edge retention. I will carry this for some time to get a better feel for it in daily use and ill update when I have an idea how it performs in day to day use.

    I've been using and sharpening it on and off for a few months now and I really just like the way it sharpens better. in regular use I don't think I can tell much difference between it and S30V. I preferred XHP over S30V because I like how it sharpens better. I feel the same about SPY27 for the most part. I didn't expect it to beat out S30V in an edge retention test but if priced accordingly I'll take it over VG-10 or BD1N in any model.

    Great testing. I definitely agree with you on how it breaks down. The edge becomes bald ( no bite ) fairly quickly. Which is why I would take s30v over spy27 everytime

    For all the hate I see about s30v it still out performs a lot of so called premium steels. I'll take well done s30v over most of the premium stainless steels at this point. Thanks for the info as always 👍

    I really like this steel the same way I like LC200N. It's not a supersteel but never claimed to be. I would think Spyderco developed this steel to perform like an S30V or S35VN, but be easier to heat treat or machine at their factory level. I want to regrind my Native to see if a thinner grind changes performance. But I like sharpening these steels that take very fine edges. Great work and video as always. Thank you.

    Very nice G. I was hoping for some more fine edge retention but overall i think thats pretty good. But at the end of the day the price theyre charging makes it not worth it.

    What I’ve noticed is my native in spy27 takes to the strop very nicely. With my day to day knife use it holds its edge much like S30v or S35vn. But getting back to a razors edge it strops just as easily as my vg10 knives.

      This is my experience as well, and for EDC it's amazing. Just a 3-4 passes per side on 6 and then 1 micron compounds and it's good for the day!

      Same observations. I relate it to VG-10 for stopping.. maybe even 154CM on an old BM mini Griptilian. I just feel that Spyderco was "late to the party" with this steel. It's like, Why? , Why now ? This should've been released 3 or 4 years ago. Before they standardized s45vn for Para2 & LC200N in their Salt line. I have a SPY27 Native 5LW and rotate it. It's a nice knife with good edc steel. No complaints. It's just late in the game. It doesn't really bring anything to the table that immediately sticks out *except* for sharpening & stopping. And maybe that's the whole point behind it. Bringing people a steel that will sharpen easily for beginners & experts alike - with s30v or better traits/qualities. This steel has always just landed me a big question mark. I still appreciate the exclusive factor of it & hope Spyderco works with Crucible *or* Carpenter in the future & releases a truly different, unique steel. With something that makes it stick out. Aside from high corrosion resistance. They have plenty of H1 & LC200N models that fill that void.

    I've had this one in my pocket now for three weeks, the factory edge only lasted about a week but that's because I bounced it off something and put a chip in it so that's on me. I found it to sharpen and apex easily with a nice clean deburr. While mine didn't have a lot of belt chatter it's certainly had a really asymmetrical grind. Because I don't have a more precise sharpening system I can only guess but I would say it was probably 17/23. I would have returned it but I bought it as a beater and while at that price it's a little expensive for it I'm happy with the performance and the lightweight. I will say that with the fresh edge on it that it's held up nicely. If you'd like to test it I'll be happy to send it to you.

    Got a native 5 in spy27 the other day. I can already tell it's a lot easier to strop and sharpen than S35VN.
    This to me is a really big plus, I can strop this to hair whittling sharp with just a few strokes on my strop with 6 and 1 micron compounds on it.
    With s35vn that's more of a challenge and for EDC, just a few strokes, it's perfect.

      S30V is still more wear resistant than the new crucible powder stainless because it has more carbides. Subsequently it doesn't have toughness as good as s35VN, SPY27 etc.
      Which doesn't matter much because factory angles won't allow any of those to chip under normal use. What actually matters is that S30V is underrated af so it is now " cheap" . Which is a win for us tbh

    The S30V has 2x the Vanadium in it might be why the older steel wears better. The CPM SPY27 adds Niobium 1.00 and Cobalt 1.50 and Nitrogen .1. I like CPM S35VN slightly easier to sharpen then S30V... It is a great time to be a steel nerd.. Thank you for the video. : )

    Thank you. The numbers you got here sound basically the same as what you got with BD1N on Para 3. I can’t help but find it a bit disappointing. There is a considerable price difference between Para 3 is BD1N and Spy27 (which just looks nicer because of the blue handle)

    My lightweight para 3 has been with BJ and Kurt for over 5 months so my experience is minimal with spy27. The edge flat lining reminds me of vtoku2 which I don't care for. My viewpoint is jaded for several reasons with spy27. First off 140 feet from the factory edge is a step in the right direction. The factory edge wasn't overheated as much as we've been accustomed to, so this could be steps towards wet grinding. Realize this spy27 was a starting point with vg10 being the expectation in performance levels. Fine grained steel with good feedback on the Stones, reminds me of Aeb-l in that regard. The price to performance ratio isn't that great for spy27. Being in the same conversation with s30v I think is a compliment. Who knows if the chemistry gets tweaked in the near future. Afterall it's a starting point which is where my appreciation stems from.

    Sound like exactly what Spyderco said it was trying to accomplish, an S30V class steel that exchanges some edge retention for toughness and easier sharping experience. No it not better than M390 but not everyone can afford a G Wagon just to through the woods either. As always your mileage may vary.

    I think they actually intended it to be that way. About or close to s30v but the selling point being easy to sharpen or strop back. Let me know how the sharpening went. Was it any easier? I wonder how long you could use it with edc tasks only and still strop it back. I use crude type tools. I dont have a fixed system but may eventually get one. I shapen on a wet stone or just spydie rods and strop on cardboard from cereal boxes and a old leather belt. I dont even use past. For ten years this has been my system, and i can keep most stuff , even premium steel very sharp. Stoping back is important to me. Would love to hear your insight on strop back steels

    That is a bit disappointing. SPY27 has about 2% less Vanadium than S30V, while it adds 1% of Niobium. So there is no clear reason to expect performance considerably better than S30V. Of course we would have to know also the hardness to make a better guess.

    Yay spyderco did another “groundbreaking” thing. Made a mediocre blade steel worse then s30v. Thanks spyderco you are really running out of steels to make sprints with. They literally have to make up new ones that suck lol

    • @StuckSeatpost
      @StuckSeatpost 3 роки тому +5

      Not all new steels are geared toward maximum edge retention. The SPY27 formula was clearly marketed by Spyderco as offering a similar but tougher and more sharpenable alternative to S30V with slightly better corrosion resistance. They are testing the waters with a cobalt-rich steel. I appreciate that they're spending valuable resources letting the public play with new steel formulas, rather than just pumping out a line of mostly identical titanium-scaled flipper knives all with S35VN for twice the price of the average Spyderco.

    • @jon6969
      @jon6969 3 роки тому

      @@StuckSeatpost but they make knives with lc200n which is cheaper and better then spy69 and s30v arguably. Do you know anything about cobalt? It’s generally not responsibly mined. It’s like saying “hey we are going to throw this material that little kids in Africa will die for because we can!” With the amount of shit spyderco is capable of, THIS is not impressive. They need to be criticized not patted on the back for incremental bs like this.
      Edit- there are companies making knife blades out of tungsten and terravantium. Let that sink in.

    • @StuckSeatpost
      @StuckSeatpost 3 роки тому +1

      @@jon6969 SPY27 has better edge retention than LC200N. VG-10 also has better edge retention than LC200N, depending on heat treat. LC200N is cool but like any steel there is a trade-off of properties. It's hyped up even though it has poor edge retention compared to most blade steels. It's claim to fame is corrosion-resistance.
      I think your point about cobalt is good, although the amount of cobalt used in these steels is an extremely tiny quantity compared to the amount of cobalt used for consumer electronics and batteries.
      "They need to be criticized not patted on the back for incremental bs like this." I'm sorry but this is a totally ridiculous response. Just don't buy it if you don't want it. It's not like they're cancelling all other steels used to replace with SPY27. It literally affects you in no way.
      Tungsten is cool but it lacks toughness and is expensive to process. There's a reason only specialty manufacturers like Sandrino are working with it. That company has a long history of working with it for other industrial uses. Personally I'd much rather have a knife made from a high alloy steel that lasts a month before sharpening, is easy to sharpen, and has some toughness to it, than a tungsten blade that lasts 2 months but is an absolute bear to sharpen and I have to worry about cracking under lateral forces.

    • @jon6969
      @jon6969 3 роки тому

      I highly disagree with vg10 having more edge retention then lc200n. I can’t even find a silly chart that shows that to be the case. The fact is, spy27 does not out perform s35vn in toughness or Rockwell hardness unless you want it to(heat treat). So spy went to crucible to make a steel that directly competes with another steel they sell. I know I’m nitpicking but I really was looking forward to what’s next and wasn’t expecting this.
      Edit - didn’t see your whole paragraph! - to my ridiculous comment. Is my comment as ridiculous as you typing out that paragraph to tell me why I should be happy with spy69? You do realize spyderco mass produces knives right, they are not buying pinches of cobalt at a time? The battery industry has already came up with a way to make li and li pol batteries without cobalt. Knives
