Recently there has been a ton of drama in bmx. Lot's of fights, sponsor changes, and silly things happening. BMX is not the same culture that we were seeing a few years ago and in this video I discuss why. Sean Ricany is cutting his bike in half after losing his sponsor, Hobbie Doan is moving on from kink, and chase hawk is being really two faced.
The changes in the BMX world started as soon as it started to boom in 2020 and we are all guilty for how it turned out.
to anyone watching this video.... quit listening to negative goobers just go inspire someone to get a bike and ride with you, period. bmx isnt DYING (quit saying that mess because it scares away potential new riders) its just in a generational change, older riders are getting out of the game and some of them are acting out because something they love feels like it doesn't love them back anymore. its a raw human emotion and valid, look past that and the weird gatekeepers that say "thats not REAL bmx" and appreciate the new wave it is what it is, happened with skateboarding too. GO RIDE YOUR BIKE!
Facts I love how this dude grafts himself to anything to get views classic pathetic leach. 😂
Its definitely in a generational divide. All the serious bmx riders I come into contact with are over 30. A few years ago I at least saw a few teenagers on bikes but that was a couple years ago.
@@sole__doubt yeah man i started riding during covid lockdown (but have been a fan since the 90's) because i was just so burnt out from skateboarding i wanted something new to push my limits and we have some teens and stuff that are into bmx here and of course they like their panzas, and billy perrys and other youtuber guys and the old heads HATE on them so hard for being into that like "THATS NOT BMX" and im like dude... guess what? that is THEIR bmx it doesnt mean they dont respect the history of bmx but they got to get their foot in the door before you go bashing what they like, then they end up not wanting to come around to events and stuff and they turn to the wheelie bikes. its annoying. BMX has a serious gatekeeping problem but social media has definitely tainted what bmx is to alot of people, it makes anyone with a camera "somebody" and it can be great and also not at the same time. it used to be you had to work hard to earn a video part which in MY opinion pushed progression in a diff way and made people respect riders who "made it" now you cant go an hour without seeing some random with a video part. kids dont know who to look up to so now its more about whos marketable and thats just business. it is what it is.
@@RAXtheGREAT I have to admit I cant think of anything more boring than watching bmx videos from mediocre riders like Perry and Panza.
@@sole__doubt and you are well within your right to feel that way it is definitely not for everyone, its only an issue if you go out of your way to make someone ELSE feel bad for what THEY like you know what i mean? like if some 13 year old kid shows up to the park with a panza complete im not gonna be like "that bike is so lame get a real bike" especially if im better than the kid and hes potentially watching my riding and admiring the skill set it can be super damaging to a kids confidence. when people really get into bmx they usually start out in one lane and sometimes find themselves in a different one (i know some people know what i mean). example kid sees panza video goes dang bmx is awesome starts riding, after a while when the panza vids are all watched and they get introduced to say anthem 2 with mike aitken or maybe some old props stuff, little devil, old mirra footage etc they start to understand more about bmx. I just want to see more POSITIVITY in BMX i dont care what someones riding preference is as long as they are getting outside and learning the art of falling and picking yourself back up and trying again because its an important life lesson to learn.
56 years old. I have seen pretty much all of it from the late 70s and your message is spot on!
In 1989 I wondered if BMX was going to make it. I had a used Haro Sport and I was starting to do more street and the bike wasn't holding up. I didn't even know if there were going to be BMX bikes available anymore. The magazines I read were getting thin. BMX Action merged with Freestylin' to make Go. And it was super thin and Go didn't last long.
But in 91, it started to pick up again. Then a video called Ride On came out and the beginning of that video basically told us BMX wasn't dead.
What we are seeing today isn't even close to what was going on back then. Go look up Ride On, I think it's on UA-cam, and watch that intro.
Pick up your bike and ride. BMX isn't about being sponsored or doing the latest greatest trick. Honestly, at 56 years old, whenever I launch off a jump and do a 1/2 ass table I am stoked! If you can't find the fun in just riding your bike you are in it for all the wrong reasons.
I will continue to ride BMX until my body physically isn't capable of doing it anymore.
I recently bought my first BMX in over two decades. With all these deals, it seems like I came in at the right time.
I bought my first bike ever because of the deals. I’ve skated the last 20 years and figured I’d give BMX a try with it being affordable
The deals are insane right now. Welcome to the sport 🔥🙏
Same!
@@Dougsterbobwhere? Source?
2k for a haro…. Deals are poppin!
I checked 10 different bike shops around me and none of them had BMX bikes. A few bike shop owners said they stopped carrying them years ago because something like "it's for kids and people go to target or Walmart to buy kid bikes". So I bought a bmx online for myself because I'm not a kid. 🤷♂️
I started my BMX journey two years ago, at the age of 39. Soon turning 41, a mother of two daughters and can't do s**t yet with my Verde Luxe that I bought used from a kid who didn't want to ride anymore. I also live in a country where ground is covered in snow for almost half a year and not a lot of indoor parks for newbies like me. 😅 Still, BMX is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I don't have high goals. If I ever learn a half decent bunnyhop and a couple of other things, I'll be happy. Just love riding my bike anyway, and hope to give a good example for my daughters and show them that the most important thing is just to do the things you enjoy and not give a damn what other people might think. Maybe some day they might be the next generation riding their bikes. ❤
Right now waiting for the snow to melt, though. Only a couple of more months to go. 😂
I just got back into riding at 36 years old. I bought a new but used 2021 Kink Cloud fall of 2023 but I did buy pedal, bars, stem and 48 spline cranks Im a big guy im 6'6" Im just trying to have fun BMX won't die, always someone who going to try to push the sport no worries.
Comes and goes been that since at least the 80s
Bingo!
Yep Ive been riding since the late 80s and thats how it is, what it is really is that most people who get into it dont stick with it. I will admit that of all the hobbies Ive had over my life BMX easily has the worst class of people.
BMX is in the Dawn of its Sphere of Expanding Power in my Backyard.
Man I was literally just thinking that the sport was dying too! We need more awareness!
It will never die, I still have my original 1977 STROKER II, my original 1988 GT Interceptor and my 1988 Haro Master. No mid school for me, but new school yes. I feel hard in love with the 28/9t gearing and today's 36s,which made me hate big sprockets and 48's wheels. Now today, I'm buying all these completes for dirt cheap and watching your videos has taught me about the top of the line signature completes. I'm buying just to build them and look at them, and at the price that they are at now, I'm like Pac Man 😁 Like you said, it'll never die 😎👊
This clickbait title sucked me in. The video content pissed me off. I'm in the BMX industry. You are talking about my vocation and avocation. You ride but you don't know the behind the scenes info on the industry so your commentary is conjecture. As far as the drama in BMX goes, you have a guy with substance abuse issues blowing up and it's seen as entertainment. It's terrible. Riders losing their sponsors? Yeah, because they are paid to promote product and get sales. Sales are down so there is a lack of available cash from the brands. What really counts is only the time riding your bike and plenty of people are riding. As long as that exists, BMX will be fine.
The big corporations don't need the bmx. They are busy whoring out skateboarding. They've paired skating with the trans shit via algorthms so be glad your not us.
Just got back into BMX at 25 after not riding for 13 years, and I'm loving it so much. I got a Haro Leucadia at a super cheap price because, you're right, the shops aren't selling them. But I joined the sport because of the freedom. Coming from skateboarding the ability to land in grass and ride the messed up terrain is what attracted me honestly. I still skate but now when there's a spot that's too crusty for skate wheels the bmx is always a super fun option! Also as a skater I think something that's missing at least from my area is the local shop vibe, I'll never buy skate stuff online but it's hard to always find a place selling sick local bmx gear
I think bmx will be around forever. The highs and lows on a popularity aspect is nothing new. The worst thing with bmx is the fact that most people only have a short window before age and life etc gets in the way and people stop riding
I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen someone on a Bmx bike lol they were huge when I was growing up 06-2011 time frame everyone was riding
The gossip and tea economy (shit talking) is all about getting views and/or monetizing content. The gossip and tea economy is the polar opposite of the true nature of why we love bmx.
The gossip and tea economy is NOT PMA Positive Mental Attitude.
Seems like Adam 22 and the Come-Up Blog started the the gossip and tea economy (make money on BMX gossip).
I feel like BMX died back in 2011-2012 era. It wasn't underground anymore and it was gaining a lot of mainstream attraction which I guess is a good thing but then came all the korean off shore bike companys flooding the market. It used to just be Primo, Animal, Profile, Kink, Oddyssey, Fit, S&M, FBM, Demolition as the norm and then some come up companies like 2hip, Dirt Bros, Terrible 1, Mutiny, MacNeil, Poverty, Eastern, Metal that were around at the time but just didn't blow up like the first few I named. The BMX movement became instead of embracing new riders coming around in town to like if your not part of our crew we ain't fukkn with you. A lot of investers came in that had no interest in the movement and just wanted a quick buck. Dudes like Nigel that are complete sell outs, dude looks like he legit sold his soul, flashing all his cars, money and what not but that's not what BMX is about.
Easy...bmx bikes are too expensive. I asked a bunch of my skateboarder friends I'm the 90s and they all said if decent bikes were cheaper they'd be riding too but a skateboards just alot cheaper.
Hope you are well, Doug! I rarely ride anymore. Moved and work consumes me.
Why does this feel like a shitty Johnny Harris video?
I don't think it's dying at all. But I certainly could be wrong.
I got back into it then all my friends quit again 😐
The only rule on bmx should be always wear you helmet brain damage is real and not worth a life time of regrets of saying I would of have been or done this if only I didn’t bang my head on the concrete so many times 😂
Skill issue
Its winter, it will bounce back in a few months, it isn't dying I'm still building bikes and riding them.
Lots to be said on the subject, but well done overall. [insert handshake emoji]
Ain't gonna pretend I wasn't a bit disheartened when I saw the title of this video, thinking it was clickbait but it was presented very well and was full of accurate information. BMX will never die. It just gets a little quiet from corporate greed sometimes but that will pass and the riders will remain, as always.
Hey can you do a video about the animal red eye frame?
Been waiting for an analysis like this to drop for a minute now
49 and haven't rode a BMX since the Hutch days. What I will say is even in SoCal the tracks are not exactly abundant, closest to me I believe is Apple Valley almost 2 hrs away. What we are seeing pop up all over are pump tracks and I bought a DJ bike last year for myself and recently 2 for my kids (10&7). IMHO the DJ/Pump Track thing is the new BMX so not that its dead its just evolved. As for the equipment (bikes) I see both BMX and DJ's at pump tracks and the jump parks but primarily DJ's for riders HS age on up and the smaller kids on BMX. Not hating on either just stating my observation.
Any chance for a 2024 bike review / bikes under 400-500$?? Been out of biking for about 10 years and looking at buying the stolen casino can’t find any 2024 reviews or videos on almost any bike at all.
This is hilarious getting views for a small BMX argument. Prices gone up because people are spending. I'm happy with that. GET A BMX.
"To anyone watching this video.... quit listening to negative goobers just go inspire someone to get a bike and ride with you, period. bmx isnt DYING (quit saying that mess because it scares away potential new riders". I think this is the best comment which describes it all.
I agree. BMX STILL WORKING for people who realy wants to ride. For industry, trade shops and professional riders things changed for sure. Personally I'm closer with my feelings to owners of the local shops with bikes and parts and proriders who wants to simply ride, get a sponsor, earn and say: this is my passion and regular job. I did not recognize the situation with Brant Moore but fights and slugfests was and still are the part of BMX world. Just like they are for the most of other worlds. Not trying to say it is the best solution for everything but relations between people not always are a fairytale about unicorns and rainbows. And picture of a two BMX guys getting slaps from each other, looks like kind of clicbite stories. Long story short. Things changed. Life is a sinusoide also for BMX. However BMX still going on and community should be created by riders for riders. Not because of industry or events. Even here on UA-cam, riders who are not a contest guys and they are not connected to some big events, putting videos just becasue of their passion. And even if they are not putting it, people still riding.
Bmx is dying directly from you as a person..... I'm kidding. Cool videos. I feel like bmx is more alive than ever. When I was a kid, you could go to any skatepark and if you could barspin you were the best there. Now go to the park and get showed up by kids a third your age then tey and tell me bmx is dead😂😂😂😂😂
I used to ride 2019 to 2022 and 21-22 was the best time of my life hurts to see the sport dying and my favourite companies struggling i did build up a new bike 3 weeks ago with all these deals though
After being out of BMX for years I cam to the conclusion it is dead myself, all the sites have gone, the shoes have gone, the brands have gone & it's impossible to find a decent-priced bike to get back into it.
BMX is boring and the parts are too expensive. If you get good enough to start learning tricks but not good enough yet to make money off BMX then you're just stuck unless you have a rich family that just buys anything you need. It's a sport for pampered rich kids who can afford to be sent to Woodward all the time, I don't care to watch them all do the same boring tricks they all learned from the same 5 guys working at the same camps. It also sucks trying to ride street and everyone is yelling at you and calling the cops. Kicked out of skateparks and threatened with felony trespassing. It's all a joke.
As a kid, BMX was always fun until my friends started getting digital cameras and smartphones and trying to film everything. Then they made downhill mountain bikes way better and more affordable, more trails popped up during covid, now I just go into the woods on my own property usually, and ride where nobody is going to fk with me. Way better, but ya I guess BMX can't grow when you take away the things that made it raw and easily accessible.
I dont think it's dying. I see a lot of active BMX groups on Facebook. I have a BMX bike i got new as a 12 year old in 2005. This year i have started to fix that bike and i want to learn how to ride this bike like a BMX bike and learn how to do different types of tricks with it this summer as i"m 31 years old.
Been riding since 1988 when I bought my first good bike... a 1988 GT performer. I've been riding ever since so I guess it's just dead for everyone else
I would say that BMX has petered out cuz it is REALLLLLLLLL HARD to get good and watching the guys that are more like gymnasts not curb nerds and its not exactly cheap
I dont think the sports dying, i just think its transtioned into some redbull stunt show. When i rode 20 years ago, 360 whips and flairs where the thing. Now its became some button mash move from dave mirra pro bmxer 2
Love to see you posting! Sorry the subject blows
I dont follow trends like alot of bmx tubers are doing, bmx is not dying because I do it for the love
@dougsterbob if im 5,10 190 can i ride a 20.5 gt mercado with 9.5 or 10 bars
Love the channel but it’s really not dying man there is so much hype around it
Bmx still alive and well in the woods. Internet bmx drama….
Sports will NEVER die, the era within those sports where it is filled with shitty people will end but the sport will never die.
It's those stupid 29" wheelie bikes. I'm waiting for the colony sweet tooth to go back on sale again
I'm 42 and I'm planning to buy my first BMX Fly Omega
Clickbait for doomers.
Mater baiter. Click baiter
@@DougsterbobI'm un subbing lol why you making click bait I was going to buy merchandise and sign up for bike school but you have to make these dumbass videos
I just started getting into it in 2023 surprisingly enough lol bought a kink whip on fb marketplace and now I’m considering a 26” 🎉
I just scored a brand new 2022 kink gap xl for $180! Live to ride
Only the greedy companies get hurt by used bike sells lol
Why is bmx escaping reality? Lol its actually a reality check 😂
I just finished the build on my 2021 Pro Performer Heritage, because all bikes are a single color with all black parts and I don't like that.
Anyways, I threw an extra $1,750 at the bike to make it MINE. NO regrets, other than the prices taking a dive.
That’s sick! I built a custom bmx for like 1500 and don’t regret it 😂 feels great and I always get compliments at the skatepark
This video is the bike almost done. I swapped the pegs to oil-slick and the brake calipers to white, in order to match the levers.
nice, doug used my bike as a thumbnail on a few streams, its a pink panza frame@@TheDwightMamba
Also the market rose during pandemic with the bike craze
I think the worst thing is kids on scooters. They dont ride bikes anymore.
I've been riding BMX since 1987, and have been through every type of up and down related to the sport. The freedom and joy I feel every time I roll out on my bike is unmatched. I'm almost 49 now, and I'll keep riding until I physically can't anymore. The bandwagon hoppers always jump off, and it sucks, but their hearts weren't in it anyway. BMX is in my blood, it's not something I can just quit. The hardcore will always ride.
I loved bmx…. Just couldn’t keep a bike from getting stolen.
Go pedal and have fun with people you like riding with
No way bro bmx is strong as ever stop looking at the negativity
what about OSS getting popular through no jumper?
Industry wise you’re very close to how things went. A lot of variables. I’ll give you one this is a freebie..
Palaton exercise bikes made a really huge deals with some of the manufacturing over seas and how much they bought it really hurt us and made us have to scramble and think out the box to fix this situation so we can have our stuff made.
Bmx is really effected by MtB corporations and buisness. They are way bigger and when they buy stuff we use. It affects us. Think bearings, material etc… everything doesn’t come from one place it’s scattered.
Biggest problem it was the pandemic and no company could travel to their agents so they could check on said product.
Being forced to pay up to 30k for a container when it was only 3k and then customs was charging another 2k, tariffs skyrocketed and here’s something that will blow your mind in the cycling world we are considered toys so we have to pay extra duties.
So yes bikes raised and they still didn’t cover what was paid.
Also 20 years ago a standard was 300 and they frames are basically same price.
We need to raise prices higher and look more to kids as the future…
Keep up the good work
Skyway Street beat build
this video quality is great doug
one of the better videos ive seen in the last week
Custom Riders came back 🥳
I've always said that as long as skateboarding exists, there always be people who wanna do that kinda stuff.. but on a bike.
bmx is banned in a ton of skateparks
Mountain biking is taking over.
Lmaoo mainstream bmx sucks
Grandma salt is all you need.
BMX was HUGE mid 2000s
All sports must evolve to live in newer generations, adopt features from OTHER sports, make new rules, new tricks, new social games, etc
It's not dying, they're moving out of the parks to give us more room!
It’s not dying. At all.
Affordability + Quality. Take me, 19, out of HS, been Into bmx my whole life except never could get a proper bike (except my Forecaster I regret selling). I want something old school myself, since they could handle everything and dabble In flatland, but that'll run you like $2K . It's not dying per se, just stagnant
Fur-nay-gall
I mean, bmx can die but I’ll still ride my bikes. My town just built a brand new bmx/skate park (Sioux falls South Dakota), a new pump track and we’re trying to get a USAbmx track here too, hopefully. I have plenty of extra parts to ride forever
Im 46 yes when I was younger BMX is about learning tricks, riding and just having fun. Now it is about brands and upgrading and posing. When I meet boys who ride BMX they be like check out my new upgrades. Not like look, a new trick I learnt.....
BMX needs to do what the skate community is doing and lose the egos and just have fun / make the sport look and be fun to encourage more riders and attract big sponsors. Right now the sport is looking desperate and has no real direction. Say what you will about Adam 22 but he did a lot for the sport with the come up and OSS. Riders need to independently build their own media channels through UA-cam and other social media platforms. There are so many pro skaters with 100k-1m followers on UA-cam that are encouraging the sport and attracting new people. Think outside the BMX community.
It's probably also because of sk8boarding getting more popular (because it's easier than BMX).
i feel like every action sport is dying right now. i've been riding scooters for 8 years now and i was getting kinda bored because i felt like the sport was dying after an exponential growth. so i turned to bmx and recently just bought one hoping i'll find that sense of freedom that i did with my friends when i first started riding. makes me sad to see that its also happening to other sports.
with all that being said i'm hyped to receive my bmx soon and start riding.
Bmx is never die !!!!
After watching 2023 x games I think bmx is gona have a boom In The next few years this alway happens
Just because people ain't spending money doesn't mean it's dying the whole world Is struggling not just bmx
BMX will never die. I am 53 years old and I am back into BMX after nearly 40 years. I bought about 70 BMX in the last 6 months but they are more Mid School than Old School. It is not only the business of BMX which is hurt but the whole world economy at the moment. Like you said, get on your bike and have fun.
I havnt bought my self a bike in 15 years, still holding onto my FBM stairmaster. Although I just bought my son a DK for his birthday
Fucking nice message, i was not sure if it was gonna be a controversial video, but man you said the right things, bmx is just being free on two wheels, bmx is discovering and travelling. I ride my bike by my self here in Portugal most of the time, and its sad to see that over there on the USA its getting a complete mess, just go ride and have fun, film some videos to show your friends and family and make memories. Much love from Lisbon, Portugal
Bmx isn't dying the world is.
Just got back into it purchased a Sunday forecaster Amazing bike definitely beats the 90s bikes but thats just my opinion not everyone
I always buy used i have 5 custom street bikes only the top frames and parts, kids always sell after a while and cheap
I'm a "beginner" in bmx at 39. i rode around back when i was younger. i have an old Huffy mountain bike. My 9 year son and 6 year old daughter go on rides all the time. we also go to the dirt trails where mainly MTB is. im searching for the best bang for around 4-500$ i wouldn't want a beginner bike just cause my goal is to do a ton of freestyle. cruising on the streets to grinding rails, benches, etc and then hop on some dirt trails or grass trails etc. i've watched your videos but they are old and I'm not sure how the recommendations equal to nowadays. When is the bet time to buy a bike ?? deals deals thanks
I mean kink bmx did not release 2024 models. I knew something is not right in the bmx world.
People love to take money from where it belongs that’s the issue.
kink poorly managed their entire product line, could have just offered $400 whips and lead in sales but they goofed.
This has been happening with the MTB community as well. I've seen lots of riders's sponsors leaving them, and brands such as nukeproof pretty much dying.
however, unlike the mountain bikes, bmx bikes over here don't seem too discounted, but there ain't much development in the sport around my area unlike mountain bikes, so... I guess no new bike day for me.
BMX is alive for us in my area but it's definitely becoming bad in other areas , I feel like all the renegades and douche bags are in southern Califonia, but hey for BMX enthusiast the sales are awesome !!!
Great perspective ! How can I get a personalized bike recommendation? There’s so many sales going on but I’m a bigger guy and have been out of the bike world for almost 10 years 😅
I see two things going on: kids barely go outside anymore. Videos games, the internet, traffic, and lack of open space have made the indoors more attractive. Second, BMX has an image problem. Most of the time it looks super dangerous and not very fun. All of the unwritten rules and beefs are a joke too. I just got my first bike in a million years, coming back to BMX from MTB. I don't care about the drama, though I wish the sport/culture were a little healthier. A BMX bike is still the ultimate machine created by humankind.
Hi. Is the Score Sheet Link broken? Always get a 404 Error Message. Anyone can help? ty!
I like that small Rusty cameo. Going on a small tangent, I saw an article called mops and psychopaths. Here's the thing, people are wandering if BMX is dying and how we can bring more people in but this is a good example of how there's going to be an explosion for everything, it will die down and crystalize. That's when you're going to have a core audience. I think the end message is perfect. Just do what you can do and make you there's still people out there riding consistently rather than trying to have a huge bubble that's going to collapse.
Your right about that cause when i bought my 24” s&m wtf frame in 2019 it was 389.95 now it up to 520 for the frame
Nah this happened with everything, as you already said "stock and demand"
Just buy my first brand new bmx and damn, it's so fun
Why would a 15 year old ride Bmx when he can make 1 million dollars being an entrepreneur 😅
